Elogio a la sabiduría

1 La plata tiene sus veneros, Y el oro un lugar donde refinarlo. 2 De la tierra se saca el hierro, Y de la piedra se funde el cobre. 3 Pone término a la oscuridad, Excavando hasta el último rincón, La piedra oscura y sombría, 4 Lejos de donde la gente transita, Socavan retorcidas galerías, Apartados de la humanidad. 5 La tierra de donde sale el pan, Por debajo es trastornada como por fuego, 6 Las piedras que allí se hallan son el lugar de los zafiros, Y también hay polvo de oro. 7 Tal senda es desconocida por el ave de presa, Jamás el ojo del halcón la ha divisado. 8 Nunca hollada por fieras arrogantes, Ni ha pasado por allí el león. 9 Alarga su mano sobre el pedernal, Trastoca las montañas de raíz, 10 Entre la roca abre galerías, Y su ojo logra ver todo lo precioso. 11 Detiene las corrientes, para que no lloren, Y hace que lo escondido salga a la luz. 12 Pero la sabiduría, ¿de dónde se saca? ¿Dónde está el yacimiento de la prudencia? 13 El hombre no conoce el valor de ella: No se halla en la tierra de los vivientes, 14 El abismo dice: No está en mí, El mar dice: No está conmigo. 15 No se puede obtener con oro fino, Ni la plata puede ser pesada por su precio. 16 No puede evaluarse con oro de Ofir, Ni con el ónice precioso o el zafiro. 17 Oro y diamantes no se le pueden igualar, Ni se puede pagar con vasos de oro fino. 18 El coral y el cristal, ni se mencionen, Porque la adquisición de la sabiduría Supera las piedras preciosas. 19 El topacio de Etiopía no la igualaría, Ni podrá ser evaluada con oro puro. 20 ¿De dónde pues, proviene la sabiduría? ¿Y cuál es el lugar de la prudencia? 21 Ha sido encubierta a los ojos de todos los vivientes, Y oculta a todas las aves de los cielos. 22 El Abadón y la Muerte dijeron: ¡Su fama hemos oído con nuestros oídos! 23 Dios conoce el camino de ella, Y sabe el lugar donde se halla, 24 Porque contempla hasta los confines del orbe, Y ve cuanto hay bajo los cielos, 25 Cuando da su peso al viento, Y determina las aguas por medida. 26 Cuando dicta una ley para la lluvia, Y un sendero a relámpagos y truenos. 27 Entonces Él la veía, y la manifestó, La estableció, e incluso la escudriñó. 28 Y dijo al hombre: He aquí, el temor de Adonay es la sabiduría, Y el apartarse del mal, la prudencia.

1 Surely there is a vein for the silver, and a place for gold where they fine it . 2 Iron is taken out of the earth, and brass is molten out of the stone. 3 He setteth an end to darkness, and searcheth out all perfection: the stones of darkness, and the shadow of death. 4 The flood breaketh out from the inhabitant; even the waters forgotten of the foot: they are dried up, they are gone away from men. 5 As for the earth, out of it cometh bread: and under it is turned up as it were fire. 6 The stones of it are the place of sapphires: and it hath dust of gold. 7 There is a path which no fowl knoweth, and which the vulture' eye hath not seen: 8 The lion' whelps have not trodden it, nor the fierce lion passed by it. 9 He putteth forth his hand upon the rock; he overturneth the mountains by the roots. 10 He cutteth out rivers among the rocks; and his eye seeth every precious thing. 11 He bindeth the floods from overflowing; and the thing that is hid bringeth he forth to light. 12 But where shall wisdom be found? and where is the place of understanding? 13 Man knoweth not the price thereof; neither is it found in the land of the living. 14 The depth saith, It is not in me: and the sea saith, It is not with me. 15 It cannot be gotten for gold, neither shall silver be weighed for the price thereof. 16 It cannot be valued with the gold of Ophir, with the precious onyx, or the sapphire. 17 The gold and the crystal cannot equal it: and the exchange of it shall not be for jewels of fine gold. 18 No mention shall be made of coral, or of pearls: for the price of wisdom is above rubies. 19 The topaz of Ethiopia shall not equal it, neither shall it be valued with pure gold. 20 Whence then cometh wisdom? and where is the place of understanding? 21 Seeing it is hid from the eyes of all living, and kept close from the fowls of the air. 22 Destruction and death say, We have heard the fame thereof with our ears. 23 God understandeth the way thereof, and he knoweth the place thereof. 24 For he looketh to the ends of the earth, and seeth under the whole heaven; 25 To make the weight for the winds; and he weigheth the waters by measure. 26 When he made a decree for the rain, and a way for the lightning of the thunder: 27 Then did he see it, and declare it; he prepared it, yea, and searched it out. 28 And unto man he said, Behold, the fear of the Lord, that is wisdom; and to depart from evil is understanding.
