Los hijos de Israel dijeron: Decid cómo fue hecha esa maldad.4Y el levita, el marido de la mujer asesinada, respondió y dijo: Yo llegué a Gabaa de Benjamín con mi concubina, para pasar allí la noche,5y los hombres de Gabaa se alzaron contra mí y cercaron la casa de noche, con intención de matarme, y humillaron a mi concubina de tal manera que murió.6Y yo tomé a mi concubina y la corté en trozos y la envié por todo el territorio de la heredad de Israel, por cuanto habían cometido aquella maldad e infamia en Israel.7He aquí que todos vosotros los hijos de Israel estáis presentes. Dad aquí vuestro parecer y consejo.8Entonces todo el pueblo se levantó como un solo hombre, y dijeron: Ninguno de nosotros irá a su tienda, ni volverá ninguno a su casa.9Esto es lo que ahora haremos en Gabaa: Subiremos contra la ciudad por sorteo.10Tomaremos diez hombres de cada centenar de todas las tribus de Israel, y cien de cada mil, y mil de cada diez mil, para repartir provisiones al pueblo, para que al subir contra Gabaa de Benjamín, le hagan conforme a toda la infamia que se cometió en Israel.11Así se juntaron contra la ciudad todos hombres de Israel unidos como un solo hombre.12Y las tribus de Israel enviaron hombres por toda la tribu de Benjamín, diciendo: ¿Qué maldad es esta que ha acontecido entre vosotros?13Ahora pues, entregad a los hombres, aquellos hijos de Belial que están en Gabaa, para que les demos muerte y extirpemos esta infamia de Israel. Pero los hijos de Benjamín no quisieron escuchar la voz de sus hermanos los hijos de Israel.14Mas bien, los hijos de Benjamín salieron de sus ciudades y se reunieron en Gabaa para enfrentar en batalla a los hijos de Israel.15Y los hijos de Benjamín que salieron de las ciudades sumaban ese día veintiséis mil hombres armados de espada, además de los habitantes de Gabaa, donde se enlistaron setecientos hombres escogidos.16Toda esa gente, incluyendo los setecientos hombres escogidos, eran zurdos. Cada uno podía tirar piedras con la honda a un cabello sin errar el tiro.17Y los hombres de Israel, aparte de Benjamín, ascendían a cuatrocientos mil hombres armados de espada, todos ellos hombres de guerra.18Y se levantaron los hijos de Israel, y subieron a Bet-’El y consultaron a ’Elohim, diciendo: ¿Quién de nosotros irá primero a combatir contra los hijos de Benjamín? Y YHVH respondió: Primero Judá.19Por la mañana se levantaron los hijos de Israel y acamparon contra Gabaa.20Y los hombres de Israel salieron a pelear contra Benjamín, y los hombres de Israel se colocaron en orden de batalla contra ellos junto a Gabaa.21Pero los hijos de Benjamín salieron de Gabaa y derribaron por tierra en aquel día veintidós mil hombres de Israel.22Sin embargo, se rehizo la gente de los hombres de Israel, y volvieron a ordenar batalla en el lugar donde lo habían hecho el primer día.23(Pues los hijos de Israel habían subido y llorado delante de YHVH hasta la tarde, y habían consultado a YHVH, diciendo: ¿Entablaré de nuevo combate contra los hijos de mi hermano Benjamín? Y YHVH les había dicho: Subid contra él.)24Así pues, al día siguiente, los hijos de Israel marcharon contra los hijos de Benjamín.25Y salió Benjamín de Gabaa contra ellos el segundo día y otra vez hizo caer por tierra dieciocho mil hombres de los hijos de Israel, todos ellos armados de espada.26Entonces todos los hijos de Israel y todo el pueblo subieron y fueron a Bet-’El y lloraron; y permanecieron allí delante de YHVH y ayunaron aquel día hasta la tarde; y sacrificaron holocaustos y ofrendas de paz delante de YHVH.27Y consultaron los hijos de Israel a YHVH (pues el Arca del Pacto de Dios estaba allí por aquellos días,28y Finees ben Eleazar, hijo de Aarón, ministraba ante ella en aquel tiempo), diciendo: ¿Entablaré de nuevo combate contra los hijos de mi hermano Benjamín, o desistiré? Y dijo YHVH: ¡Subid, porque mañana lo entregaré en tu mano!29Entonces Israel tendió emboscadas en torno a Gabaa.30Y al tercer día, cuando los hijos de Israel subieron contra los hijos de Benjamín, dispusieron batalla frente a Gabaa como las otras veces.31Y los hijos de Benjamín salieron para enfrentarse al pueblo, alejándose de la ciudad. Como las otras veces, comenzaron a herir a algunos de ellos por los caminos, uno de los cuales sube a Bet-’El y otro a Gabaa. Así mataron en el campo a unos treinta hombres de Israel.32Y los hijos de Benjamín decían: ¡Están vencidos ante nosotros como antes! Pero los hijos de Israel se habían dicho: Huiremos para alejarlos de la ciudad hasta los caminos.33Entonces todos los de Israel se levantaron de su posición y se dispusieron en orden de batalla en Baal-Tamar, mientras que los emboscados de Israel surgían de sus escondites al descampado de Gabaa.34Y llegaron frente a Gabaa diez mil hombres escogidos de todo Israel, lo cual hizo que la batalla comenzara a arreciar, sin saber que el desastre se les venía encima.35Y aquel día YHVH derrotó a Benjamín ante Israel, y los hijos de Israel mataron a veinticinco mil cien hombres de Benjamín, todos armados de espada.36Los hijos de Benjamín vieron entonces que estaban siendo derrotados; sin embargo los hijos de Israel cedieron campo a Benjamín, pues confiaban en la emboscada que habían puesto detrás de Gabaa.37Entonces la gente de la emboscada se apresuró y acometió contra Gabaa, y la gente de la emboscada se desplegó y pasaron a filo de espada a toda la ciudad.38Y era señal convenida entre los hombres de Israel y los de la emboscada, que éstos harían subir una gran humareda desde la ciudad.39Así, cuando los hombres de Israel volvieron la espalda en el combate, y los de Benjamín comenzaron a causar bajas entre los hombres de los de Israel, matando a unos treinta hombres, pensaron: De seguro están derrotados ante nosotros como en el primer combate.40Pero cuando la humareda comenzó a subir de la ciudad, los de Benjamín miraron hacia atrás, y he aquí que de la ciudad subía el humo a los cielos.41Entonces los hombres de Israel se volvieron, en tanto que los de Benjamín se consternaron, pues veían que la catástrofe había caído sobre ellos.42Por ello volvieron sus espaldas ante los hombres de Israel, y tomaron el camino al desierto. Pero la batalla siguió ardorosa tras ellos, al tiempo que los que salían de la ciudad eran exterminados en medio de ellos.43Cercaron así a los benjamitas y los persiguieron sin tregua hasta frente a Gabaa, hacia donde nace el sol.44Y de Benjamín cayeron dieciocho mil hombres, todos ellos hombres valientes.45Los demás se volvieron y huyeron hacia el desierto, hasta la peña de Rimón, y de ellos fueron abatidos en los caminos otros cinco mil hombres, y siguieron persiguiéndolos hasta Gidom, donde mataron a dos mil hombres más.46De manera que los que cayeron de Benjamín aquel día fueron veinticinco mil hombres armados de espada, todos ellos hombres de valor.47Pero seiscientos hombres se volvieron y huyeron hacia el desierto, hasta la peña de Rimón, y se quedaron en la peña de Rimón cuatro meses.48Los de Israel se volvieron contra los hijos de Benjamín y los mataron a filo de espada, tanto hombres como animales, y todo lo que fue hallado, y prendieron fuego a cuantas ciudades hallaron.
1Then all the people of Israel came out, from Dan to Beersheba, including the land of Gilead, and the congregation assembled as one man to the Lord at Mizpah. (Jos 22:12; Jue 21:5; 1 S 3:20; 1 S 7:5; 1 S 10:17; 1 S 11:7; 2 S 3:10; 2 S 24:2)2And the chiefs of all the people, of all the tribes of Israel, presented themselves in the assembly of the people of God, 400,000 men on foot that drew the sword. (Jue 8:10; Jue 20:15; Jue 20:17; Jue 20:25; Jue 20:35; Jue 20:46; 1 S 14:38)3(Now the people of Benjamin heard that the people of Israel had gone up to Mizpah.) And the people of Israel said, “Tell us, how did this evil happen?”4And the Levite, the husband of the woman who was murdered, answered and said, “I came to Gibeah that belongs to Benjamin, I and my concubine, to spend the night. (Jue 19:15)5And the leaders of Gibeah rose against me and surrounded the house against me by night. They meant to kill me, and they violated my concubine, and she is dead. (Jue 19:22; Jue 19:25)6So I took hold of my concubine and cut her in pieces and sent her throughout all the country of the inheritance of Israel, for they have committed abomination and outrage in Israel. (Jue 19:23; Jue 19:29)7Behold, you people of Israel, all of you, give your advice and counsel here.” (Jue 19:30)8And all the people arose as one man, saying, “None of us will go to his tent, and none of us will return to his house.9But now this is what we will do to Gibeah: we will go up against it by lot,10and we will take ten men of a hundred throughout all the tribes of Israel, and a hundred of a thousand, and a thousand of ten thousand, to bring provisions for the people, that when they come they may repay Gibeah of Benjamin for all the outrage that they have committed in Israel.”11So all the men of Israel gathered against the city, united as one man.12And the tribes of Israel sent men through all the tribe of Benjamin, saying, “What evil is this that has taken place among you? (Dt 13:14; Jos 22:13; Jos 22:16)13Now therefore give up the men, the worthless fellows in Gibeah, that we may put them to death and purge evil from Israel.” But the Benjaminites would not listen to the voice of their brothers, the people of Israel. (Dt 13:5; Dt 13:13; Dt 17:2; Jue 19:22)14Then the people of Benjamin came together out of the cities to Gibeah to go out to battle against the people of Israel.15And the people of Benjamin mustered out of their cities on that day 26,000 men who drew the sword, besides the inhabitants of Gibeah, who mustered 700 chosen men. (Nm 1:37; Nm 26:41; Jue 20:2)16Among all these were 700 chosen men who were left-handed; every one could sling a stone at a hair and not miss. (Jue 3:15; 1 Cr 12:2)17And the men of Israel, apart from Benjamin, mustered 400,000 men who drew the sword; all these were men of war. (Jue 20:15)18The people of Israel arose and went up to Bethel and inquired of God, “Who shall go up first for us to fight against the people of Benjamin?” And the Lord said, “Judah shall go up first.” (Jue 1:1; Jue 20:26; Jue 20:31)19Then the people of Israel rose in the morning and encamped against Gibeah.20And the men of Israel went out to fight against Benjamin, and the men of Israel drew up the battle line against them at Gibeah.21The people of Benjamin came out of Gibeah and destroyed on that day 22,000 men of the Israelites. (Jue 20:25)22But the people, the men of Israel, took courage, and again formed the battle line in the same place where they had formed it on the first day.23And the people of Israel went up and wept before the Lord until the evening. And they inquired of the Lord, “Shall we again draw near to fight against our brothers, the people of Benjamin?” And the Lord said, “Go up against them.” (Jue 20:26)24So the people of Israel came near against the people of Benjamin the second day.25And Benjamin went against them out of Gibeah the second day, and destroyed 18,000 men of the people of Israel. All these were men who drew the sword. (Jue 20:2; Jue 20:21)26Then all the people of Israel, the whole army, went up and came to Bethel and wept. They sat there before the Lord and fasted that day until evening, and offered burnt offerings and peace offerings before the Lord. (Jue 20:18; Jue 20:31)27And the people of Israel inquired of the Lord (for the ark of the covenant of God was there in those days, (Jos 18:1; 1 S 4:3)28and Phinehas the son of Eleazar, son of Aaron, ministered before it in those days), saying, “Shall we go out once more to battle against our brothers, the people of Benjamin, or shall we cease?” And the Lord said, “Go up, for tomorrow I will give them into your hand.” (Nm 25:7; Nm 31:6; Dt 10:8; Dt 18:5; Dt 18:7; Jos 24:33)29So Israel set men in ambush around Gibeah. (Jos 8:4)30And the people of Israel went up against the people of Benjamin on the third day and set themselves in array against Gibeah, as at other times.31And the people of Benjamin went out against the people and were drawn away from the city. And as at other times they began to strike and kill some of the people in the highways, one of which goes up to Bethel and the other to Gibeah, and in the open country, about thirty men of Israel. (Jue 20:18; Jue 20:26; Jue 21:19)32And the people of Benjamin said, “They are routed before us, as at the first.” But the people of Israel said, “Let us flee and draw them away from the city to the highways.” (Jos 8:5)33And all the men of Israel rose up out of their place and set themselves in array at Baal-tamar, and the men of Israel who were in ambush rushed out of their place from Maareh-geba.[1]34And there came against Gibeah 10,000 chosen men out of all Israel, and the battle was hard, but the Benjaminites did not know that disaster was close upon them. (Jue 20:41)35And the Lord defeated Benjamin before Israel, and the people of Israel destroyed 25,100 men of Benjamin that day. All these were men who drew the sword. (Jue 20:2)36So the people of Benjamin saw that they were defeated. The men of Israel gave ground to Benjamin, because they trusted the men in ambush whom they had set against Gibeah.37Then the men in ambush hurried and rushed against Gibeah; the men in ambush moved out and struck all the city with the edge of the sword. (Jos 8:19)38Now the appointed signal between the men of Israel and the men in the main ambush was that when they made a great cloud of smoke rise up out of the city39the men of Israel should turn in battle. Now Benjamin had begun to strike and kill about thirty men of Israel. They said, “Surely they are defeated before us, as in the first battle.” (Jue 20:31)40But when the signal began to rise out of the city in a column of smoke, the Benjaminites looked behind them, and behold, the whole of the city went up in smoke to heaven. (Jos 8:20)41Then the men of Israel turned, and the men of Benjamin were dismayed, for they saw that disaster was close upon them. (Jue 20:34)42Therefore they turned their backs before the men of Israel in the direction of the wilderness, but the battle overtook them. And those who came out of the cities were destroying them in their midst. (Jos 8:15; Jos 8:24)43Surrounding the Benjaminites, they pursued them and trod them down from Nohah[2] as far as opposite Gibeah on the east.44Eighteen thousand men of Benjamin fell, all of them men of valor.45And they turned and fled toward the wilderness to the rock of Rimmon. Five thousand men of them were cut down in the highways. And they were pursued hard to Gidom, and 2,000 men of them were struck down. (Jos 15:32; Jue 20:42; Jue 21:13)46So all who fell that day of Benjamin were 25,000 men who drew the sword, all of them men of valor.47But 600 men turned and fled toward the wilderness to the rock of Rimmon and remained at the rock of Rimmon four months. (Jue 20:42; Jue 20:45)48And the men of Israel turned back against the people of Benjamin and struck them with the edge of the sword, the city, men and beasts and all that they found. And all the towns that they found they set on fire.
