La conquista de Jericó

1 Ahora bien, a causa de los hijos de Israel, Jericó estaba cerrada y bien atrancada. Nadie salía y nadie entraba. 2 Entonces YHVH dijo a Josué: He aquí he entregado en tu mano a Jericó con su rey y sus hombres valerosos. 3 Rodearéis pues la ciudad todos los varones de guerra, yendo alrededor de la ciudad una vez, y esto harás durante seis días. 4 Y siete sacerdotes cargarán los siete cuernos del jubileo delante del Arca. Al séptimo día daréis siete vueltas a la ciudad, y los sacerdotes soplarán el shofar. 5 Y sucederá que cuando hagan resonar con fuerza el cuerno del carnero, cuando escuchéis el sonido del shofar, todo el pueblo gritará con gran alarido, entonces la muralla de la ciudad caerá a plomo y el pueblo subirá, cada uno hacia el frente. 6 Y Josué ben Nun convocó a los sacerdotes, y les dijo: Cargad el Arca del Pacto, y que siete sacerdotes lleven los cuernos del jubileo delante del Arca de YHVH. 7 Y dijo al pueblo: Pasad y rodead la ciudad, y el que esté armado pase delante del Arca de YHVH. 8 Y sucedió que cuando Josué habló al pueblo, los siete sacerdotes que llevaban los siete cuernos del jubileo pasaron delante del Arca de YHVH y tocaron el shofar; y el Arca del Pacto de YHVH los seguía. 9 Y el que estaba armado iba delante de los sacerdotes que tocaban el shofar, y la retaguardia iba detrás del Arca, andando y haciendo resonar el shofar. 10 Y Josué había dado orden al pueblo, diciendo: No gritaréis, ni haréis oír vuestra voz, ni saldrá palabra alguna de vuestra boca, hasta el día cuando yo os diga: ¡Gritad! Entonces gritaréis. 11 E hizo que el Arca de YHVH rodeara la ciudad, yendo en torno de ella una vez, y regresaron al campamento y pasaron la noche en el campamento. 12 Y Josué se levantó muy de mañana, y los sacerdotes cargaron el Arca de YHVH. 13 Y los siete sacerdotes que llevaban los siete cuernos del jubileo delante del Arca de YHVH, emprendieron la marcha haciendo resonar el shofar continuamente. El que estaba armado iba a la vanguardia, y la retaguardia marchaba en pos del Arca de YHVH, mientras los cuernos resonaban continuamente. 14 Y el segundo día rodearon la ciudad una vez, y regresaron al campamento. Así hicieron durante seis días. 15 El séptimo día se levantaron al rayar el alba, y rodearon la ciudad de la misma manera, siete veces. Sólo en aquel día rodearon la ciudad siete veces. 16 Y aconteció a la séptima vez, cuando los sacerdotes hicieron resonar el shofar, que Josué dijo al pueblo: ¡Gritad, porque YHVH os ha dado la ciudad! 17 La ciudad y todo lo que hay en ella será consagrada al exterminio como ofrenda a YHVH. Sólo Rahab la ramera vivirá, junto con todos los que estén en la casa con ella, porque escondió a los emisarios que enviamos. 18 Absteneos escrupulosamente de no tocar nada dedicado al exterminio, no sea que hagáis maldito y perturbéis al campamento de Israel. 19 Pero toda la plata, el oro y los objetos de bronce y de hierro serán consagrados para YHVH, e irán al tesoro de YHVH. 20 Entonces el pueblo gritó y se hizo resonar el shofar. Y aconteció que cuando el pueblo oyó el sonido del shofar, el pueblo gritó con gran alarido, y la muralla cayó sobre sí misma. Entonces el pueblo subió hacia la ciudad, cada uno de frente, y conquistaron la ciudad. 21 Luego exterminaron a filo de espada todo lo que había en la ciudad: hombre y mujer, joven y anciano, y hasta los bueyes, las ovejas y los asnos. 22 Entonces Josué dijo a los dos hombres que habían explorado la tierra: Entrad en casa de la mujer ramera, y haced salir de allí a la mujer y a todo lo que sea suyo, según le jurasteis. 23 Y los jóvenes emisarios entraron y sacaron a Rahab, a su padre, a su madre y a sus hermanos, a todos los suyos. Sacaron también a todos sus parientes, y los ubicaron fuera del campamento de Israel. 24 Y prendieron fuego a la ciudad y todo lo que había en ella. Sólo pusieron en el tesoro de la Casa de YHVH la plata, el oro y los objetos de bronce y de hierro. 25 Pero Josué preservó la vida a Rahab la ramera, y a la casa de su padre y a todos los suyos. Y ella habita en medio de Israel hasta este día, por cuanto escondió a los emisarios que Josué envió a espiar Jericó. 26 En aquel tiempo Josué les impuso un juramento, diciendo: ¡Maldito delante de YHVH el hombre que se levante para reedificar esta ciudad de Jericó! ¡Al precio de su primogénito eche sus cimientos y al de su hijo menor ponga sus portones! 27 Y YHVH estaba con Josué, y su fama se divulgó por toda la tierra.

The Fall of Jericho

1 Now Jericho was shut up inside and outside because of the people of Israel. None went out, and none came in. 2 And the Lord said to Joshua, “See, I have given Jericho into your hand, with its king and mighty men of valor. (Dt 7:24; Jos 2:9; Jos 2:24; Jos 8:1; Neh 9:24)

3 You shall march around the city, all the men of war going around the city once. Thus shall you do for six days. 4 Seven priests shall bear seven trumpets of rams’ horns before the ark. On the seventh day you shall march around the city seven times, and the priests shall blow the trumpets. (Nm 10:8; Jos 6:5; Jos 6:8; Jos 6:13; Jue 7:16; Jue 7:22)

5 And when they make a long blast with the ram’s horn, when you hear the sound of the trumpet, then all the people shall shout with a great shout, and the wall of the city will fall down flat,^[1] and the people shall go up, everyone straight before him.” 6 So Joshua the son of Nun called the priests and said to them, “Take up the ark of the covenant and let seven priests bear seven trumpets of rams’ horns before the ark of the Lord.” 7 And he said to the people, “Go forward. March around the city and let the armed men pass on before the ark of the Lord.” (Jos 4:12) 8 And just as Joshua had commanded the people, the seven priests bearing the seven trumpets of rams’ horns before the Lord went forward, blowing the trumpets, with the ark of the covenant of the Lord following them. 9 The armed men were walking before the priests who were blowing the trumpets, and the rear guard was walking after the ark, while the trumpets blew continually. 10 But Joshua commanded the people, “You shall not shout or make your voice heard, neither shall any word go out of your mouth, until the day I tell you to shout. Then you shall shout.” 11 So he caused the ark of the Lord to circle the city, going about it once. And they came into the camp and spent the night in the camp. 12 Then Joshua rose early in the morning, and the priests took up the ark of the Lord. (Jos 3:6) 13 And the seven priests bearing the seven trumpets of rams’ horns before the ark of the Lord walked on, and they blew the trumpets continually. And the armed men were walking before them, and the rear guard was walking after the ark of the Lord, while the trumpets blew continually. 14 And the second day they marched around the city once, and returned into the camp. So they did for six days. 15 On the seventh day they rose early, at the dawn of day, and marched around the city in the same manner seven times. It was only on that day that they marched around the city seven times. 16 And at the seventh time, when the priests had blown the trumpets, Joshua said to the people, “Shout, for the Lord has given you the city. 17 And the city and all that is within it shall be devoted to the Lord for destruction.^[2] Only Rahab the prostitute and all who are with her in her house shall live, because she hid the messengers whom we sent. (Lv 27:28; Dt 20:17; Jos 2:4) 18 But you, keep yourselves from the things devoted to destruction, lest when you have devoted them you take any of the devoted things and make the camp of Israel a thing for destruction and bring trouble upon it. (Jos 7:12; Jos 7:25; 1 Cr 2:7) 19 But all silver and gold, and every vessel of bronze and iron, are holy to the Lord; they shall go into the treasury of the Lord.” 20 So the people shouted, and the trumpets were blown. As soon as the people heard the sound of the trumpet, the people shouted a great shout, and the wall fell down flat, so that the people went up into the city, every man straight before him, and they captured the city. (Jos 6:5; Heb 11:30) 21 Then they devoted all in the city to destruction, both men and women, young and old, oxen, sheep, and donkeys, with the edge of the sword. (Dt 7:2) 22 But to the two men who had spied out the land, Joshua said, “Go into the prostitute’s house and bring out from there the woman and all who belong to her, as you swore to her.” (Jos 2:14; Heb 11:31) 23 So the young men who had been spies went in and brought out Rahab and her father and mother and brothers and all who belonged to her. And they brought all her relatives and put them outside the camp of Israel. (Jos 2:13) 24 And they burned the city with fire, and everything in it. Only the silver and gold, and the vessels of bronze and of iron, they put into the treasury of the house of the Lord. (Jos 6:19) 25 But Rahab the prostitute and her father’s household and all who belonged to her, Joshua saved alive. And she has lived in Israel to this day, because she hid the messengers whom Joshua sent to spy out Jericho. (Mt 1:5) 26 Joshua laid an oath on them at that time, saying, “Cursed before the Lord be the man who rises up and rebuilds this city, Jericho. “At the cost of his firstborn shall he lay its foundation, and at the cost of his youngest son shall he set up its gates.” (1 R 16:34) 27 So the Lord was with Joshua, and his fame was in all the land.
