Rebelión de Seba

1 Pero estaba allí cierto hombre de Belial, llamado Seba ben Bicri, benjamita, quien dio soplido al shofar, y dijo: ¡No tenemos parte en David ni heredad en el hijo de Isaí! ¡Israel: cada uno a sus dioses! 2 Entonces todos los hombres de Israel dejaron de seguir a David y siguieron a Seba ben Bicri. Pero los hombres de Judá siguieron fielmente a su rey desde el Jordán hasta Jerusalem. 3 Cuando David llegó a su casa en Jerusalem, tomó el rey a las diez concubinas que había dejado para cuidar la casa y las puso en reclusión, y aunque las sustentó, nunca más se llegó a ellas; y ellas permanecieron recluidas hasta el día de su muerte, en viudez perpetua. 4 Luego dijo el rey a Amasa: Convócame a los hombres de Judá dentro de tres días, y preséntate aquí. 5 Y Amasa fue a convocar a Judá, pero tardó más del plazo que le había sido señalado. 6 Por lo cual David dijo a Abisai: Seba ben Bicri nos hará ahora más daño que Absalón. Toma tú a los siervos de tu señor y ve tras él, no sea que halle para sí ciudades fortificadas y se nos pierda de vista. 7 Así salieron tras él los hombres de Joab con los cereteos, y los peleteos y todos los hombres valientes. Y salieron de Jerusalem para ir tras Seba ben Bicri. 8 Y cuando estaban cerca de la gran roca que está en Gabaón, Amasa les salió al encuentro. Y Joab vestía su capa larga, y sobre ella se había ceñido una espada con su vaina unida a la cadera, la cual se le cayó mientras avanzaba. 9 Y preguntó Joab a Amasa: ¿Tienes paz, hermano mío? Y Joab tomó a Amasa por la barba con su mano derecha para besarlo. 10 Pero Amasa no reparó en la espada que estaba en la otra mano de Joab, de modo que lo hirió con ella en la quinta costilla, derramando sus entrañas por tierra. Y no tuvo que repetir la estocada para que muriera. Después Joab y su hermano Abisai fueron tras Seba ben Bicri. 11 Y allí cerca estaba uno de los mozos de Joab, que dijo: ¡Quien favorezca a Joab y el que esté por David, que siga a Joab! 12 Y Amasa yacía revolcándose en su sangre en medio del camino, y viendo aquel hombre que todo el pueblo se detenía, apartó a Amasa del camino y lo llevó al campo, y echó sobre él una túnica, porque veía que todo el que pasaba se detenía junto a él. 13 Cuando fue apartado de la senda, todos los hombres siguieron tras Joab para perseguir a Seba ben Bicri. 14 Y él pasó por todas las tribus de Israel hacia Abel-bet-maaca, y todos los beritas se reunieron y también fueron detrás de él. 15 Cuando ellos llegaron, lo sitiaron en Abel-bet-maaca, y levantaron contra la ciudad un terraplén que se sostenía en el muro, y toda la gente que estaba con Joab batía el muro para derribarlo. 16 Entonces una mujer sabia dio voces desde la ciudad, diciendo: ¡Oíd! ¡Oíd! Os ruego que digáis a Joab: ¡Acércate para que yo hable contigo! 17 Así que él se acercó a ella, y la mujer le preguntó: ¿Eres tú Joab? Y le respondió: Yo soy. Y ella le dijo: Oye las palabras de tu sierva. Y él respondió: Escucho. 18 Entonces ella habló diciendo: Antiguamente solían decir: Quien consulte, que consulte en Abel; y así concluían cualquier asunto. 19 Somos una de las más pacíficas y fieles de Israel, pero tú procuras destruir una ciudad que es madre en Israel. ¿Por qué quieres devorar la heredad de YHVH? 20 Y Joab respondió y dijo: ¡Lejos, lejos esté de mí que yo devore o destruya! 21 El asunto no es así, sino que un hombre de la región montañosa de Efraín, Seba ben Bicri es su nombre, ha levantado su mano contra el rey, contra David. Entregadlo solamente a él y me iré de la ciudad. Entonces la mujer respondió a Joab: ¡He aquí, su cabeza te será arrojada desde el muro! 22 Después la mujer fue a todo el pueblo con su sabiduría; y cortaron la cabeza a Seba ben Bicri, y la arrojaron a Joab. Y éste dio soplido al shofar y se retiraron de la ciudad, cada uno a su tienda, y Joab regresó junto al rey en Jerusalem. 23 Joab estaba sobre todo el ejército de Israel, y Benaía ben Joiada estaba al mando de los cereteos y los peleteos. 24 Adoram estaba a cargo de los tributos, y Josafat ben Ahilud era el cronista. 25 Seva era el escriba, y Sadoc y Abiatar, los sacerdotes. 26 E Ira, el jaireo, era el ministro principal de David.

The Rebellion of Sheba

1 Now there happened to be there a worthless man, whose name was Sheba, the son of Bichri, a Benjaminite. And he blew the trumpet and said, “We have no portion in David, and we have no inheritance in the son of Jesse; every man to his tents, O Israel!” (Dt 13:13; 2 S 19:43; 2 S 20:22; 1 R 12:16; 2 Cr 10:16)

2 So all the men of Israel withdrew from David and followed Sheba the son of Bichri. But the men of Judah followed their king steadfastly from the Jordan to Jerusalem. 3 And David came to his house at Jerusalem. And the king took the ten concubines whom he had left to care for the house and put them in a house under guard and provided for them, but did not go in to them. So they were shut up until the day of their death, living as if in widowhood. (2 S 15:16; 2 S 16:21) 4 Then the king said to Amasa, “Call the men of Judah together to me within three days, and be here yourself.” (2 S 17:25; 2 S 19:13) 5 So Amasa went to summon Judah, but he delayed beyond the set time that had been appointed him. 6 And David said to Abishai, “Now Sheba the son of Bichri will do us more harm than Absalom. Take your lord’s servants and pursue him, lest he get himself to fortified cities and escape from us.”^[1] (2 S 11:11; 1 R 1:33) 7 And there went out after him Joab’s men and the Cherethites and the Pelethites, and all the mighty men. They went out from Jerusalem to pursue Sheba the son of Bichri. (2 S 8:18; 2 S 20:23) 8 When they were at the great stone that is in Gibeon, Amasa came to meet them. Now Joab was wearing a soldier’s garment, and over it was a belt with a sword in its sheath fastened on his thigh, and as he went forward it fell out. 9 And Joab said to Amasa, “Is it well with you, my brother?” And Joab took Amasa by the beard with his right hand to kiss him. (Mt 26:49; Mr 14:45; Lc 22:47) 10 But Amasa did not observe the sword that was in Joab’s hand. So Joab struck him with it in the stomach and spilled his entrails to the ground without striking a second blow, and he died. Then Joab and Abishai his brother pursued Sheba the son of Bichri. (2 S 2:23; 1 R 2:5) 11 And one of Joab’s young men took his stand by Amasa and said, “Whoever favors Joab, and whoever is for David, let him follow Joab.” 12 And Amasa lay wallowing in his blood in the highway. And anyone who came by, seeing him, stopped. And when the man saw that all the people stopped, he carried Amasa out of the highway into the field and threw a garment over him. 13 When he was taken out of the highway, all the people went on after Joab to pursue Sheba the son of Bichri. 14 And Sheba passed through all the tribes of Israel to Abel of Beth-maacah,^[2] and all the Bichrites^[3] assembled and followed him in. (Nm 21:16; 2 R 15:29) 15 And all the men who were with Joab came and besieged him in Abel of Beth-maacah. 16 Then a wise woman called from the city, “Listen! Listen! Tell Joab, ‘Come here, that I may speak to you.’” 17 And he came near her, and the woman said, “Are you Joab?” He answered, “I am.” Then she said to him, “Listen to the words of your servant.” And he answered, “I am listening.” 18 Then she said, “They used to say in former times, ‘Let them but ask counsel at Abel,’ and so they settled a matter. (2 S 20:14) 19 I am one of those who are peaceable and faithful in Israel. You seek to destroy a city that is a mother in Israel. Why will you swallow up the heritage of the Lord?” (1 S 26:19; 2 S 17:16) 20 Joab answered, “Far be it from me, far be it, that I should swallow up or destroy! (2 S 20:19) 21 That is not true. But a man of the hill country of Ephraim, called Sheba the son of Bichri, has lifted up his hand against King David. Give up him alone, and I will withdraw from the city.” And the woman said to Joab, “Behold, his head shall be thrown to you over the wall.” (Jos 24:33) 22 Then the woman went to all the people in her wisdom. And they cut off the head of Sheba the son of Bichri and threw it out to Joab. So he blew the trumpet, and they dispersed from the city, every man to his home. And Joab returned to Jerusalem to the king. (1 S 4:10; 2 S 20:16; Ec 9:14) 23 Now Joab was in command of all the army of Israel; and Benaiah the son of Jehoiada was in command of the Cherethites and the Pelethites; (2 S 8:16; 1 R 4:3) 24 and Adoram was in charge of the forced labor; and Jehoshaphat the son of Ahilud was the recorder; (1 R 12:18) 25 and Sheva was secretary; and Zadok and Abiathar were priests; (2 S 15:24; 2 S 19:11) 26 and Ira the Jairite was also David’s priest.
