De började att tillverka stora mängder av bränt tegel och att samla jordbeck till murbruk.5Men när Gud kom ned för att se staden och tornet, som de höll på att bygga,6sa han: "Om de kan klara av detta när de just har börjat utnyttja sin språkliga och politiska enhet, tänk bara på vad de ska kunna göra längre fram! Inget kommer att bli omöjligt för dem!7Kom, låt oss gå dit ner och ge dem olika språk, så att de inte kan förstå varandra!8Genom sitt handlande spred Gud ut dem över hela jorden, och då upphörde byggandet av staden.9Det är därför som den kallas Babel, som betyder förvirring, för det var där som Herren förvirrade dem genom att ge dem många språk och på detta sätt skingra dem över hela jorden.
Sems ättlingar
10-11Två år efter floden, när Sem var 100 år gammal, föddes hans son Arpaksad. Efter det levde Sem ytterligare 500 år och fick många söner och döttrar.12-13När Arpaksad var trettiofem år gammal föddes hans son Sela, och därefter levde han ytterligare 403 år och fick många söner och döttrar.14-15Sela var trettio år gammal när hans son Eber föddes, och han levde ytterligare 403 år och fick många söner och döttrar.16-17Eber var trettiofyra år gammal när hans son Peleg föddes. Han levde ytterligare 430 år och fick många söner och döttrar.18-19Peleg var trettio år gammal när hans son Regu föddes. Han levde ytterligare 209 år och fick många söner och döttrar.20-21Regu var trettiotvå år gammal när Serug föddes. Han levde ytterligare 207 år och fick många söner och döttrar.22-23Serug var trettio år gammal när hans son Nahor föddes. Han levde ytterligare 200 år och fick många söner och döttrar.24-25Nahor var tjugonio år gammal när hans son Tera föddes. Han levde ytterligare 119 år och fick söner och döttrar.26När Tera var sjuttio år gammal hade han tre söner - Abram, Nahor och Haran.27Och Haran fick en son, som hette Lot.28Men Haran dog som ung i det land där han föddes (i kaldeernas Ur) och efterlämnade sin far.29Under tiden gifte sig Abram med sin halvsyster Sarai, och hans bror Nahor gifte sig med den föräldralösa sondottern Milka, som var dotter till brodern Haran. Milka hade en bror som hette Jiska.30Men Sarai var ofruktsam och kunde inte få några barn.31Då tog Tera sin son Abram, sin sonson Lot, Harans son, och sin svärdotter Sarai och lämnade kaldeernas Ur för att flytta till Kanaans land. Men de stannade och bosatte sig i staden Haran.32Där dog Tera, 205 år gammal.

1Now the whole earth had one language and the same words.2And as people migrated from the east, they found a plain in the land of Shinar and settled there. Terah’s Descendants

The name of Abram’s wife was Sarai, and the name of Nahor’s wife, Milcah, the daughter of Haran the father of Milcah and Iscah.
