1Så hørte jeg Herren råbe med tordenrøst: „Kom her, I mænd, som jeg har udvalgt til bødler, og tag jeres våben med.”2Da kom der seks mænd ind gennem den nordlige port i den ydre forgård, alle med våben i hånden. Desuden var der en, som var klædt i linned og bar nogle skriveredskaber. De gik alle hen og tog opstilling ved bronzealteret foran indgangen til templet,3-4og Israels Guds stråleglans løftede sig fra sin sædvanlige plads over keruberne og stod nu ved templets indgang. „Gå gennem Jerusalems gader,” råbte Herren til manden med skriveredskaberne, „og sæt et mærke på panden af alle dem, som græder og sukker over al den synd, de ser omkring sig.”5Derefter hørte jeg Herren sige til de andre mænd: „Følg efter ham og dræb alle, som ikke har et mærke på panden. Skån ingen, vis ingen barmhjertighed.6Dræb unge såvel som gamle, kvinder såvel som børn. Kun dem, som har et mærke på panden, må I ikke slå ihjel. Begynd her ved templet.” Så begyndte de med at slå de 70 ledere ihjel.7„Fyld forgården med ligene af de dræbte,” fortsatte han, „også selv om det gør templet urent. Derefter skal I gå ud i byen.” Da de 70 ledere var slået ihjel, fortsatte mændene ud i byen.8Da de var gået, kastede jeg mig ned med ansigtet mod jorden og udbrød: „Åh, Gud Herre, er du så vred, at du vil udslette hele Israels folk?”9„Både Nordriget og Sydriget har begået utrolige synder,” svarede han. „Landet er fuldt af uretfærdighed og mord. De påstår, at jeg ikke opdager noget, og at jeg har forladt mit land og mit folk.10Derfor vil jeg ikke skåne dem eller vise medlidenhed. The land is full of blood, and the city full of injustice.
