Du og Aron skal være ansvarlige for optællingen, som skal uddelegeres til en leder fra hver enkelt stamme.5Følgende ledere skal hjælpe jer: fra Rubens stamme: Elitzur, Shedeurs søn;6fra Simeons stamme: Shelumiel, Zurishaddajs søn;7fra Judas stamme: Nahshon, Amminadabs søn;8fra Issakars stamme: Netanel, Suars søn;9fra Zebulons stamme: Eliab, Helons søn;10fra Efraims, Josefs søns, stamme: Elishama, Ammihuds søn; fra Manasses, Josefs søns, stamme: Gamliel, Pedasurs søn;11fra Benjamins stamme: Abidan, Gidonis søn;12fra Dans stamme: Ahiezer, Ammishaddajs søn;13fra Ashers stamme: Pagiel, Okrans søn;14fra Gads stamme: Eljasaf, Deuels søn;15fra Naftalis stamme: Ahira, Enans søn.”16Disse mænd var ledere blandt folket, overhoveder for hver deres slægt.17-46Samme dag sammenkaldte Moses, Aron og de ovennævnte ledere samtlige våbenføre mænd i Israel over 20 år. Hver person fik besked på at oplyse sit stamme- og slægtsnavn, sådan som Herren havde befalet Moses. Her følger den samlede opgørelse: Jakobs førstefødte søns, Rubens, stamme: 46.500; Simeons stamme: 59.300; Gads stamme: 45.650; Judas stamme: 74.600; Issakars stamme: 54.400; Zebulons stamme: 57.400; Efraims, Josefs søns, stamme: 40.500; Manasses, Josefs søns, stamme: 32.200; Benjamins stamme: 35.400; Dans stamme: 62.700; Ashers stamme: 41.500; Naftalis stamme: 53.400. Det samlede antal våbenføre mænd udgjorde 603.550 personer.47-49Dette tal indbefatter dog ikke levitterne, for Herren havde sagt til Moses: „Du må ikke bruge levitterne som soldater, og du skal ikke tage dem med på listen.50Jeg har nemlig givet dem ansvar for at tage sig af min bolig, det hellige telt, som indeholder pagtens ark. Derfor skal de altid have deres lejr i nærheden af boligen.51Det er levitternes opgave at pakke teltet sammen og rejse det igen, og hvis nogen andre blander sig i den opgave eller blot rører ved teltet, skal de henrettes.52Resten af Israels stammer skal tildeles hver deres lejrplads med hver deres banner,53men levitterne skal slå lejr rundt om teltet med pagtens ark, så de udgør en mur mellem folket og Herren, for at ingen af de menige israelitter skal komme til at røre ved teltet og rammes af Herrens vrede.”54Israels folk fulgte omhyggeligt de befalinger, som Herren havde givet Moses.

(2.Mos 18,21; 2.Mos 18,25; 4.Mos 7,2; 4.Mos 26,9; 1.Krøn 27,16)17Moses and Aaron took these men who had been named, (1.Krøn 12,31; 1.Krøn 16,41; 2.Krøn 28,15; 2.Krøn 31,19; Ez 8,20)18and on the first day of the second month, they assembled the whole congregation together, who registered themselves by clans, by fathers’ houses, according to the number of names from twenty years old and upward, head by head,19as the Lord commanded Moses. So he listed them in the wilderness of Sinai.20The people of Reuben, Israel’s firstborn, their generations, by their clans, by their fathers’ houses, according to the number of names, head by head, every male from twenty years old and upward, all who were able to go to war: (4.Mos 2,3)21those listed of the tribe of Reuben were 46,500. (4.Mos 26,7)22Of the people of Simeon, their generations, by their clans, by their fathers’ houses, those of them who were listed, according to the number of names, head by head, every male from twenty years old and upward, all who were able to go to war:23those listed of the tribe of Simeon were 59,300. (4.Mos 26,14)24Of the people of Gad, their generations, by their clans, by their fathers’ houses, according to the number of the names, from twenty years old and upward, all who were able to go to war:25those listed of the tribe of Gad were 45,650. (4.Mos 26,18)26Of the people of Judah, their generations, by their clans, by their fathers’ houses, according to the number of names, from twenty years old and upward, every man able to go to war:27those listed of the tribe of Judah were 74,600. (4.Mos 26,22; 2.Sam 24,9)28Of the people of Issachar, their generations, by their clans, by their fathers’ houses, according to the number of names, from twenty years old and upward, every man able to go to war:29those listed of the tribe of Issachar were 54,400. (4.Mos 26,25)30Of the people of Zebulun, their generations, by their clans, by their fathers’ houses, according to the number of names, from twenty years old and upward, every man able to go to war:31those listed of the tribe of Zebulun were 57,400. (4.Mos 26,27)32Of the people of Joseph, namely, of the people of Ephraim, their generations, by their clans, by their fathers’ houses, according to the number of names, from twenty years old and upward, every man able to go to war:33those listed of the tribe of Ephraim were 40,500. (4.Mos 26,37)34Of the people of Manasseh, their generations, by their clans, by their fathers’ houses, according to the number of names, from twenty years old and upward, every man able to go to war:35those listed of the tribe of Manasseh were 32,200. (4.Mos 26,34)36Of the people of Benjamin, their generations, by their clans, by their fathers’ houses, according to the number of names, from twenty years old and upward, every man able to go to war:37those listed of the tribe of Benjamin were 35,400. (4.Mos 26,41)38Of the people of Dan, their generations, by their clans, by their fathers’ houses, according to the number of names, from twenty years old and upward, every man able to go to war:39those listed of the tribe of Dan were 62,700. (4.Mos 26,43)40Of the people of Asher, their generations, by their clans, by their fathers’ houses, according to the number of names, from twenty years old and upward, every man able to go to war:41those listed of the tribe of Asher were 41,500. (4.Mos 26,47)42Of the people of Naphtali, their generations, by their clans, by their fathers’ houses, according to the number of names, from twenty years old and upward, every man able to go to war:43those listed of the tribe of Naphtali were 53,400. (4.Mos 26,50)44These are those who were listed, whom Moses and Aaron listed with the help of the chiefs of Israel, twelve men, each representing his fathers’ house. (4.Mos 26,64)45So all those listed of the people of Israel, by their fathers’ houses, from twenty years old and upward, every man able to go to war in Israel—46all those listed were 603,550. Levites Exempted
47But the Levites were not listed along with them by their ancestral tribe. (4.Mos 2,33; 4.Mos 26,57; 4.Mos 26,62)48For the Lord spoke to Moses, saying,49“Only the tribe of Levi you shall not list, and you shall not take a census of them among the people of Israel.50But appoint the Levites over the tabernacle of the testimony, and over all its furnishings, and over all that belongs to it. They are to carry the tabernacle and all its furnishings, and they shall take care of it and shall camp around the tabernacle. (2.Mos 38,21; 4.Mos 3,7; 4.Mos 3,23; 4.Mos 4,15)51When the tabernacle is to set out, the Levites shall take it down, and when the tabernacle is to be pitched, the Levites shall set it up. And if any outsider comes near, he shall be put to death. (4.Mos 3,10; 4.Mos 3,38; 4.Mos 10,17; 4.Mos 10,21; 4.Mos 18,22; 1.Sam 6,19; 2.Sam 6,6; 1.Krøn 13,10)52The people of Israel shall pitch their tents by their companies, each man in his own camp and each man by his own standard. (4.Mos 2,2; 4.Mos 2,34)53But the Levites shall camp around the tabernacle of the testimony, so that there may be no wrath on the congregation of the people of Israel.
