1Byl pak hlad veliký v krajině té.2I stalo se, když vytrávili obilí, kteréž přinesli z Egypta, že řekl k nim otec jejich: Jděte zase, a nakupte nám něco potravy.3I mluvil k němu Juda těmito slovy: Velice se zařekl muž ten, řka: Neuzříte tváři mé, nebude-li bratr váš s vámi.4Jestliže pošleš bratra našeho s námi, půjdeme a nakoupíme tobě potravy;5Pakli nepošleš, nepůjdeme. Nebo pověděl nám muž ten: Neuzříte tváři mé, nebude-li bratr váš s vámi.6I řekl Izrael: Proč jste mi tak zle učinili, oznámivše muži tomu, že máte ještě bratra?7Odpověděli: Pilně vyptával se muž ten na nás, i na rod náš, mluvě: Jest-li živ ještě otec váš? Máte-li bratra? A dali jsme mu zprávu na ta slova. Zdaž jsme to jak věděti mohli, že dí: Přiveďte bratra svého?8I řekl Juda Izraelovi, otci svému: Pošli to pachole se mnou, a vstanouce, půjdeme, abychom živi byli, a nezemřeli, i my, i ty, i maličcí naši.9Já slibuji za něj; z ruky mé vyhledávej ho. Jestliže nepřivedu ho k tobě, a nepostavím ho před tebou, vinen budu hříchem tobě po všecky dny.10A kdybychom byli neprodlévali, jistě již bychom se byli dvakrát vrátili.11I řekl jim Izrael otec jejich: Jestližeť tak býti musí, učiňtež toto: Nabeřte nejvzácnějších užitků země do nádob svých, a doneste muži tomu dar, něco kadidla, a trochu strdi, a vonných věcí a mirry, daktylů a mandlů.12Peníze také dvoje vezměte v ruce své, a peníze vložené na vrch do pytlů vašich zase doneste v rukou svých; snad z omýlení to přišlo.13Bratra svého také vezměte, a vstanouce, jděte zase k muži tomu.14A Bůh silný všemohoucí dejž vám najíti milost před mužem tím, ať propustí vám onoho bratra vašeho i tohoto Beniamina. Jáť pak zbaven jsa synů, jako osiřelý budu.15Tedy vzali muži ti dar ten, a dvoje peníze vzali v ruce své, a Beniamina; a vstavše, sstoupili do Egypta, a postavili se před Jozefem.16Vida pak Jozef Beniamina s nimi, řekl tomu, kterýž spravoval dům jeho: Uveď tyto muže do domu, a zabí hovado a připrav; nebo se mnou jísti budou muži ti o poledni.17I učinil muž ten, jakž rozkázal Jozef, a uvedl ty lidi do domu Jozefova.18Báli se pak muži ti, když uvedeni byli do domu Jozefova, a řekli: Pro ty peníze, kteréž prvé vloženy byly do pytlů našich, sem uvedeni jsme, aby obvině, obořil se na nás, a vzal nás za služebníky i osly naše.19A přistoupivše k muži tomu, kterýž spravoval v domě Jozefově, mluvili k němu ve dveřích domu,20A řekli: Slyš mne, pane můj. Přišli jsme byli ponejprvé kupovati potrav.21I přihodilo se, když jsme do hospody přišli, a rozvazovali pytle své, a aj, peníze jednoho každého byly svrchu v pytli jeho, peníze naše podlé váhy své; a přinesli jsme je zase v rukou svých.22Jiné také peníze přinesli jsme v rukou svých, abychom nakoupili potravy; nevíme, kdo jest zase vložil peníze naše do pytlů našich.23A on odpověděl: Mějte o to pokoj, nebojte se. Bůh váš, a Bůh otce vašeho dal vám poklad do pytlů vašich; penízeť jsem vaše já přijal. I vyvedl k nim Simeona.24Uved tedy muž ten lidi ty do domu Jozefova, dal jim vody, aby umyli nohy své, dal také obrok oslům jejich.25Mezi tím připravili dar ten, dokudž nepřišel Jozef v poledne; nebo slyšeli, že by tu měli jísti chléb.26Tedy přišel Jozef domů. I přinesli mu dar, kterýž měli v rukou svých, a klaněli se jemu až k zemi.27I ptal se jich, jak se mají, a řekl: Zdráv-liž jest otec váš starý, o němž jste pravili? Živ-li jest ještě?28Kteřížto odpověděli: Zdráv jest služebník tvůj otec náš, a ještě živ jest. A sklánějíce hlavy, poklonu mu činili.29Pozdvih pak očí svých, viděl Beniamina bratra svého, syna matky své, a řekl: Tento-li jest bratr váš mladší, o němž jste mi pravili? I řekl: Učiniž Bůh milost s tebou, synu můj!30Tedy pospíšil Jozef, (nebo pohnula se střeva jeho nad bratrem jeho,) a hledal, kde by mohl plakati; a všed do pokoje, plakal tam.31Potom umyv tvář svou, vyšel zase, a zdržoval se, a řekl: Klaďte chléb.32I kladli jemu zvláště, a jim obzvláště, Egyptským také, kteříž s ním jídali, obzvláštně; nebo nemohou Egyptští jísti s Židy chleba, proto že to ohavnost jest Egyptským.33Tedy seděli proti němu, prvorozený podlé prvorozenství svého, a mladší podlé mladšího věku svého. I divili se muži ti vespolek.34A bera jídlo před sebou, podával jim; Beniaminovi pak dostalo se pětkrát více než jiným. I hodovali a hojně se s ním napili.
— Přípravy na novou cestu do Egypta - Jákob propouští Benjamína, za něhož se zaručuje Juda.
1 Hlad těžce doléhal na zemi dále.2 Když spotřebovali obilí, které dovezli z Egypta, řekl jim otec: „Nakupte nám znovu trochu potravy.“3 Juda odvětil: „Ten muž nás důrazně varoval a prohlásil: ‚Mou tvář nespatříte, nebude-li s vámi váš bratr.‘4 Jsi-li ochoten pustit s námi našeho bratra, sestoupíme do Egypta a nakoupíme ti potravu.5 Nejsi-li však ochoten ho pustit, nesestoupíme. Ten muž nám přece řekl: ‚Mou tvář nespatříte, nebude-li s vámi váš bratr.‘“6 Izrael se otázal: „Proč jste jednali vůči mně tak bezohledně a pověděli tomu muži, že máte ještě bratra?“7 Odvětili: „Ten muž se nás neodbytně vyptával na nás a na náš rod. Ptal se: ‚Je ještě naživu váš otec? Máte ještě bratra?‘ Pověděli jsme mu jen to, nač se přímo zeptal. Což jsme vůbec mohli tušit, že řekne: ‚Přiveďte svého bratra dolů‘?“8 Potom se na otce Izraele obrátil Juda: „Pusť toho chlapce se mnou, ať můžeme jít. Tak zůstaneme naživu a nezemřeme – ani my ani ty ani naši maličcí.9 Já sám se za něho zaručuji, můžeš mě volat k odpovědnosti. Jestli ti ho nepřivedu a nepostavím před tebe, prohřešil jsem se proti tobě na celý život.10 Vždyť kdybychom nebyli otáleli, mohli jsme už být dvakrát zpátky.“ 11 Otec Izrael jim řekl: „Když to tak musí být, učiňte toto: Vezměte si do nádob něco opěvovaných vzácností země a doneste je dolů tomu muži jako dar: trochu mastixu a trochu medu, ladanum a masti, pistácie a mandle.12 Vezměte s sebou dvojnásobnou částku stříbra a stříbro, které vám bylo vráceno do žoků, osobně vraťte; snad to byl omyl.13 Vezměte i svého bratra a hned se navraťte k tomu muži.14 Sám Bůh všemohoucí ať vás obdaří před tváří toho muže slitováním, aby propustil vašeho druhého bratra i Benjamína. Teď zůstanu úplně bez dětí!“
— Nové setkání s Josefem - Bratři jsou uvedeni do Josefova domu. Plni obav a údivu zasedají s Josefem ke společnému stolování.
15 Ti muži tedy vzali onen dar, vzali s sebou dvojnásobnou částku stříbra a Benjamína, vydali se na cestu, sestoupili do Egypta a postavili se před Josefem.16 Když Josef spatřil, že Benjamín je s nimi, řekl správci svého domu: „Uveď ty muže do domu, poraz hned dobytče a připrav je, neboť ti muži budou jíst v poledne se mnou.“17 Muž udělal, co mu Josef řekl, a uvedl je do jeho domu.18 Ale ti muži se báli, že byli uvedeni do domu Josefova, a říkali si: „To jsme předvedeni kvůli tomu stříbru, které nám bylo posledně vráceno do žoků. Teď se na nás vyřítí, přepadnou nás a zajmou nás i s našimi osly jako otroky.“19 Proto přistoupili k muži, který byl správcem Josefova domu, a ve dveřích domu se s ním domlouvali.20 Říkali: „Dovol, pane; my jsme sem posledně sestoupili, abychom nakoupili potravu.21 Když jsme vstoupili do noclehárny, rozvázali jsme žoky. A hle, každý měl své stříbro ve svém žoku navrchu, v plné váze. Vracíme je tedy osobně zpět.22 Přinesli jsme s sebou ještě jiné stříbro, abychom nakoupili potravu. Nevíme, kdo nám vložil naše stříbro do žoků.“23 Ale on řekl: „Upokojte se, nic se nebojte. Bůh váš a Bůh vašeho otce vám dal do žoků ten skrytý poklad. Vaše stříbro jsem přece přijal.“ A vyvedl k nim Šimeóna. 24 Když správce uvedl ty muže do Josefova domu, dal jim vodu, aby si umyli nohy, a jejich oslům dal obrok.25 Oni zatím připravili dar pro Josefa, až v poledne přijde; slyšeli totiž, že tam mají stolovat.26 Jakmile Josef vkročil do domu, přinesli mu tam svůj dar a klaněli se mu až k zemi.27 Zeptal se jich, jak se jim vede, a otázal se: „Zdalipak se vede dobře vašemu starému otci, o němž jste mluvili? Je ještě naživu?“28 Odpověděli: „Tvému otroku, našemu otci, se vede dobře, je dosud živ.“ Padli na kolena a klaněli se mu.29 Tu se rozhlédl a spatřil svého bratra Benjamína, syna své matky, a tázal se: „Toto je váš nejmladší bratr, o kterém jste se mnou mluvili?“ A dodal: „Bůh ti buď milostiv, můj synu!“30 Nato se Josef rychle vzdálil. Byl hluboce pohnut a dojat nad bratrem až k pláči; vešel proto do pokojíku a rozplakal se tam.31 Potom si umyl obličej, vyšel a s přemáháním řekl: „Podávejte jídlo.“32 Podávali zvlášť jemu, zvlášť jim a zvlášť Egypťanům, kteří s ním jídali; Egypťané totiž nesmějí stolovat s Hebreji, poněvadž to je pro ně ohavnost.33 A seděli před ním od prvorozeného, jak náleželo prvorozenému, až po nejmladšího, každý podle svého věku. Jeden jako druhý trnuli úžasem.34 Potom je Josef uctil ze svého stolu; nejvíce ze všech, pětkrát víc než ostatní, však uctil Benjamína. Hodovali s ním a hojně se s ním napili.
1V zemi panoval krutý hlad.2Když spotřebovali zrní, které přivezli z Egypta, řekl jim jejich otec: „Jděte nám tam znovu koupit něco k jídlu.“3Juda mu odpověděl: „Ten muž nás přísně varoval: ‚Nechoďte mi na oči bez svého bratra!‘4Pošleš-li s námi našeho bratra, půjdeme ti koupit jídlo.5Nepošleš-li ho, nepůjdeme. Ten muž nám přece řekl: ‚Nechoďte mi na oči bez svého bratra!‘“6Izrael zvolal: „Proč jste mi tolik ublížili? Proč jste tomu muži řekli, že máte dalšího bratra?“7Odpověděli: „Ten muž se podrobně vyptával na nás i na naši rodinu: ‚Žije ještě váš otec? Máte ještě dalšího bratra?‘ Podle toho jsme mu odpovídali. Jak jsme mohli vědět, že řekne: ‚Přiveďte svého bratra sem‘?“8Juda tehdy svému otci Izraelovi navrhl: „Pošli toho chlapce se mnou. Nech nás vstát a jít, ať zůstaneme naživu a nezemřeme my ani ty ani naše děti!9Já se za něj zaručím, ode mě ho vyžaduj! Nepřivedu-li ho k tobě a nepostavím ho před tebou, ať za to před tebou nesu věčnou vinu.10Kdybychom neotáleli, určitě bychom se už dvakrát vrátili!“11Jejich otec Izrael jim nakonec řekl: „Ať se stane, co se musí stát. Udělejte tohle: Naberte do svých měchů nejvybranější plody země a odneste je tomu muži jako dar: něco balzámu, něco medu, vonné pryskyřice a myrhy, také pistácie a mandle.12Vezměte s sebou dvojnásob stříbra, i to vrácené navrch vašich vaků, a odneste to s sebou zpět – snad šlo o omyl.13Vezměte si i svého bratra. Vstaňte a vraťte se k tomu muži.14Kéž vám u něj Všemohoucí Bůh dopřeje slitování, aby s vámi propustil vašeho dalšího bratra i Benjamína. A já, mám-li přijít o syny, ať o ně přijdu!“15Vzali tedy s sebou kromě daru také dvojnásob stříbra a Benjamína. Vstali, odešli do Egypta a stanuli před Josefem.16Když s nimi Josef uviděl Benjamína, řekl správci svého domu: „Odveď ty muže do paláce, poraz dobytče a připrav je. Ti muži dnes budou obědvat se mnou.“17Ten učinil, jak Josef řekl, a odvedl je do Josefova paláce.18Když ale uviděli, kam je vedou, polekali se a říkali si: „Určitě nás sem dal odvést kvůli tomu stříbru, vrácenému prve do našich vaků. Teď se na nás vrhne, napadne nás a vezme nás do otroctví i s našimi osly!“19Ještě na nádvoří tedy přistoupili ke správci Josefova domu a promluvili k němu:20„Odpusť, pane, opravdu jsme sem prve přišli nakoupit jídlo.21Když jsme cestou zpět měli nocovat, otevřeli jsme své vaky a hle, stříbro každého z nás leželo navrchu v jeho vaku – naše stříbro v plné váze! Proto jsme je teď přinesli s sebou.22Přinesli jsme ještě další stříbro na nákup jídla. Nevíme, kdo nám to stříbro dal do vaků!“23On však řekl: „Buďte klidní, nebojte se. Ten poklad vám dal do vaků váš Bůh, Bůh vašeho otce. Vaše stříbro jsem dostal v pořádku.“ Načež k nim přivedl Šimeona.24Poté je uvedl do Josefova paláce, dal jim vodu na umytí nohou a jejich oslům dal obrok.25Slyšeli, že tam mají obědvat, a tak připravili svůj dar, než Josef v poledne přijde.26A když Josef přišel domů, předložili mu ten dar, který měli s sebou, a klaněli se mu až k zemi.27Zeptal se jich, jak se jim daří, a řekl: „Jak se daří vašemu starému otci, o němž jste vyprávěli? Žije ještě?“28Odpověděli: „Našemu otci, tvému služebníku, se daří dobře, ještě žije.“ Tehdy padli na kolena a klaněli se mu.29On pozvedl oči a spatřil svého bratra Benjamína, syna své matky. Zeptal se: „Je tohle váš nejmladší bratr, o němž jste mi vyprávěli?“ Potom řekl: „Kéž je ti Bůh milostiv, synu!“30Nato Josef odspěchal, neboť byl náklonností ke svému bratrovi pohnut až k slzám. Šel do svého pokoje a tam plakal.31Pak si umyl tvář, vyšel ven a s přemáháním řekl: „Podávejte jídlo!“32Podávali tedy zvlášť pro něj, zvlášť pro ně a zvlášť pro Egypťany, kteří jedli s ním. (Egypťané totiž nemohou jíst s Hebreji – je to pro ně ohavnost.)33Bratři před ním seděli v přesném pořadí, od prvorozeného až po nejmladšího, a s úžasem hleděli jeden na druhého.34Nechal jim podávat čestné porce ze svého stolu a Benjamínova porce byla pětkrát větší než porce všech ostatních. A tak hodovali a hojně se s ním napili.

Denn der Mann hat uns gesagt: Kommt mir ja nicht mehr unter die Augen, wenn ihr nicht euren Bruder mitbringt!6Da sagte Israel: Warum habt ihr mir so etwas Schlimmes angetan, jenem Mann zu sagen, dass ihr noch einen Bruder habt?7Der Mann, entgegneten sie, hat sich eingehend nach uns und unserer Verwandtschaft erkundigt und gefragt: Lebt euer Vater noch, habt ihr noch einen Bruder? Wir haben ihm Auskunft gegeben, wie es wirklich ist. Konnten wir denn wissen, dass er sagen würde: Bringt euren Bruder herab! (Gn 42,10)8Juda sagte seinem Vater Israel: Lass den Knaben mit mir ziehen! Dann können wir aufbrechen und gehen. So werden wir am Leben bleiben und nicht sterben, sowohl wir als auch du und unsere Kinder.9Ich verbürge mich für ihn; aus meiner Hand magst du ihn zurückfordern. Wenn ich ihn dir nicht zurückbringe und vor dich hinstelle, will ich alle Tage bei dir in Schuld stehen.10Ja, hätten wir nicht gezögert, könnten wir jetzt schon zum zweiten Mal zurück sein.11Da sagte ihr Vater Israel zu ihnen: Wenn es schon sein muss, dann macht es so: Nehmt von den besten Erzeugnissen des Landes in eurem Gepäck mit und überbringt es dem Mann als Geschenk: etwas Mastix, etwas Honig, Tragakant und Ladanum, Pistazien und Mandeln![1]12Nehmt den doppelten Geldbetrag mit! Das Geld, das sich wieder oben in euren Getreidesäcken fand, gebt mit eigenen Händen zurück! Vielleicht war es ein Versehen.13So nehmt denn euren Bruder mit, brecht auf und geht wieder zu dem Mann zurück!14El-Schaddai lasse euch Erbarmen bei dem Mann finden, sodass er euch den anderen Bruder und Benjamin freigibt. Ich aber, ich verliere noch alle Kinder.15Die Männer nahmen das Geschenk und den doppelten Geldbetrag mit und dazu auch Benjamin. Sie machten sich auf, zogen nach Ägypten hinab und traten vor Josef hin.16Als Josef bei ihnen Benjamin sah, sagte er zu seinem Hausverwalter: Führe die Männer ins Haus, schlachte ein Tier und richte es her! Denn mit mir werden die Männer zu Mittag essen.17Der Mann tat, wie Josef gesagt hatte: Er führte die Männer in das Haus Josefs.18Die Männer fürchteten sich, weil sie in Josefs Haus geführt wurden, und dachten: Wegen des Geldes, das sich beim ersten Mal wieder in unseren Getreidesäcken fand, werden wir hineingeführt. Man wird sich auf uns stürzen, über uns herfallen und uns und unsere Esel zu Sklaven machen.19Sie traten näher an den Hausverwalter Josefs heran und redeten mit ihm an der Haustür.20Sie sagten: Bitte, Herr, schon früher sind wir einmal hierhergekommen, um Brotgetreide zu kaufen.21Als wir aber in die Herberge kamen und unsere Getreidesäcke öffneten, siehe, da lag das Geld eines jeden von uns oben im Sack, unser Geld in seinem vollen Gewicht. Wir bringen es mit eigenen Händen wieder zurück.22Wir haben noch anderes Geld in unseren Händen mitgebracht, um Brotgetreide einzukaufen. Wir wissen nicht, wer das Geld in unsere Säcke gelegt hat.23Er sagte: Friede sei mit euch! Fürchtet euch nicht! Euer Gott, der Gott eures Vaters, hat euch einen Schatz in eure Säcke gelegt. Bei mir ist euer Geld eingegangen. Dann brachte er Simeon zu ihnen heraus.24Der Mann führte die Männer ins Haus Josefs und gab ihnen Wasser. Sie wuschen ihre Füße und er gab ihnen Futter für ihre Esel.25Sie legten, bis Josef zu Mittag kam, das Geschenk zurecht; denn sie hatten gehört, dass sie dort essen sollten.26Als Josef ins Haus kam, überreichten sie ihm das Geschenk, das sie in ihren Händen hielten, und warfen sich vor ihm auf die Erde nieder.27Er erkundigte sich, wie es ihnen gehe, und fragte: Geht es eurem alten Vater gut, von dem ihr erzählt habt? Ist er noch am Leben?28Sie erwiderten: Deinem Knecht, unserem Vater, geht es gut; er lebt noch. Dann verneigten sie sich und warfen sich nieder.29Als er seine Augen erhob und seinen Bruder Benjamin, den Sohn seiner Mutter, erblickte, fragte er: Ist das euer jüngster Bruder, von dem ihr mir erzählt habt? Und weiter sagte er: Gott sei dir gnädig, mein Sohn.30Dann ging Josef schnell weg, denn sein Gemüt war bewegt wegen seines Bruders. Er wollte weinen. Und so ging er in die Kammer und weinte dort.31Dann wusch er sein Gesicht, kam heraus, nahm sich zusammen und sagte: Tragt das Essen auf!32Man trug das Essen auf, getrennt für ihn, für sie und für die mit ihm speisenden Ägypter. Die Ägypter können nämlich nicht gemeinsam mit den Hebräern essen, weil das für die Ägypter ein Gräuel ist.33Sie saßen vor ihm entsprechend ihrem Alter, vom Erstgeborenen bis zum Jüngsten. Da blickten die Männer einander verwundert an.34Er ließ ihnen Gerichte vorsetzen, die vor ihm standen, was man aber Benjamin vorsetzte, übertraf das aller anderen um das Fünffache. Sie tranken mit ihm und sie wurden trunken.

(Gn 41,54; Gn 41,57)2And when they had eaten the grain that they had brought from Egypt, their father said to them, “Go again, buy us a little food.”3But Judah said to him, “The man solemnly warned us, saying, ‘You shall not see my face unless your brother is with you.’ (Gn 42,20; Gn 44,23)4If you will send our brother with us, we will go down and buy you food.5But if you will not send him, we will not go down, for the man said to us, ‘You shall not see my face, unless your brother is with you.’”6Israel said, “Why did you treat me so badly as to tell the man that you had another brother?”7They replied, “The man questioned us carefully about ourselves and our kindred, saying, ‘Is your father still alive? Do you have another brother?’ What we told him was in answer to these questions. Could we in any way know that he would say, ‘Bring your brother down’?”8And Judah said to Israel his father, “Send the boy with me, and we will arise and go, that we may live and not die, both we and you and also our little ones. (Gn 42,2)9I will be a pledge of his safety. From my hand you shall require him. If I do not bring him back to you and set him before you, then let me bear the blame forever. (Gn 42,37; Gn 44,32)10If we had not delayed, we would now have returned twice.”11Then their father Israel said to them, “If it must be so, then do this: take some of the choice fruits of the land in your bags, and carry a present down to the man, a little balm and a little honey, gum, myrrh, pistachio nuts, and almonds. (Gn 37,25)12Take double the money with you. Carry back with you the money that was returned in the mouth of your sacks. Perhaps it was an oversight. (Gn 42,25; Gn 42,27; Gn 42,35)13Take also your brother, and arise, go again to the man.14May God Almighty[1] grant you mercy before the man, and may he send back your other brother and Benjamin. And as for me, if I am bereaved of my children, I am bereaved.” (Gn 17,1; Gn 42,36; Neh 1,11)15So the men took this present, and they took double the money with them, and Benjamin. They arose and went down to Egypt and stood before Joseph.16When Joseph saw Benjamin with them, he said to the steward of his house, “Bring the men into the house, and slaughter an animal and make ready, for the men are to dine with me at noon.” (Gn 24,2; Gn 39,4; Gn 43,19; Gn 44,1; Gn 44,4)17The man did as Joseph told him and brought the men to Joseph’s house.18And the men were afraid because they were brought to Joseph’s house, and they said, “It is because of the money, which was replaced in our sacks the first time, that we are brought in, so that he may assault us and fall upon us to make us servants and seize our donkeys.”19So they went up to the steward of Joseph’s house and spoke with him at the door of the house,20and said, “Oh, my lord, we came down the first time to buy food. (Gn 42,3; Gn 42,10; Gn 44,18)21And when we came to the lodging place we opened our sacks, and there was each man’s money in the mouth of his sack, our money in full weight. So we have brought it again with us, (Gn 42,27)22and we have brought other money down with us to buy food. We do not know who put our money in our sacks.”23He replied, “Peace to you, do not be afraid. Your God and the God of your father has put treasure in your sacks for you. I received your money.” Then he brought Simeon out to them.24And when the man had brought the men into Joseph’s house and given them water, and they had washed their feet, and when he had given their donkeys fodder, (Gn 18,4)25they prepared the present for Joseph’s coming at noon, for they heard that they should eat bread there. 1And the famine was sore in the land.2And it came to pass, when they had eaten up the corn which they had brought out of Egypt, their father said unto them, Go again, buy us a little food.3And Judah spake unto him, saying, The man did solemnly protest unto us, saying, Ye shall not see my face, except your brother be with you.4If thou wilt send our brother with us, we will go down and buy thee food:5But if thou wilt not send him , we will not go down: for the man said unto us, Ye shall not see my face, except your brother be with you.6And Israel said, Wherefore dealt ye so ill with me, as to tell the man whether ye had yet a brother?7And they said, The man asked us straitly of our state, and of our kindred, saying, Is your father yet alive? have ye another brother? and we told him according to the tenor of these words: could we certainly know that he would say, Bring your brother down?8And Judah said unto Israel his father, Send the lad with me, and we will arise and go; that we may live, and not die, both we, and thou, and also our little ones.9I will be surety for him; of my hand shalt thou require him: if I bring him not unto thee, and set him before thee, then let me bear the blame for ever:10For except we had lingered, surely now we had returned this second time.11And their father Israel said unto them, If it must be so now, do this; take of the best fruits in the land in your vessels, and carry down the man a present, a little balm, and a little honey, spices, and myrrh, nuts, and almonds:12And take double money in your hand; and the money that was brought again in the mouth of your sacks, carry it again in your hand; peradventure it was an oversight:13Take also your brother, and arise, go again unto the man:14And God Almighty give you mercy before the man, that he may send away your other brother, and Benjamin.
