1 Když se pak Ezdráš, padna před domem Božím, tak modlil a vyznával s pláčem, sešel se k němu z lidu Izraelského zástup velmi veliký mužů i žen i dětí. A když plakal lid pláčem velikým, 2 Tedy mluvil Sechaniáš syn Jechielův z synů Elamových, a řekl Ezdrášovi: Myť jsme zhřešili proti Bohu svému, že jsme pojímali ženy cizozemky z národů zemí, a však vždy Izrael může míti naději při té věci. 3 Nyní tedy vejděme v smlouvu s Bohem svým, zapudíce všecky ženy i syny jejich podlé rady Páně a těch, jenž se třesou před přikázaním Boha našeho, a tak podlé zákona ať se stane. 4 Vstaň, nebo na tobě jest ta věc, a my budeme při tobě. Posilň se a učiň tak. 5 I vstal Ezdráš a zavázal přísahou přednější kněží a Levíty a všecken lid Izraelský, aby tak učinili. I přisáhli. 6 A vstav Ezdráš od domu Božího, odšel do pokojíka Jochananova, syna Eliasibova, i všel tam, a nejedl chleba, ani vody nepil; nebo zámutek měl pro přestoupení těch, jenž se přestěhovali. 7 Zatím dali provolati v Judstvu a v Jeruzalémě všechněm přestěhovaným, aby se shromáždili do Jeruzaléma, 8 Kdo by pak koli nepřišel ve třech dnech, podlé rady knížat a starších, aby všecken statek svůj propadl, a sám odloučen byl od shromáždění přestěhovaných. 9 A protož shromáždili se všickni muži Judští i Beniamin do Jeruzaléma ke dni třetímu, dvadcátého dne měsíce, (a ten měsíc byl devátý). I seděl všecken lid na ulici domu Božího, třesouce se pro tu věc i pro déšť. 10 Tedy vyvstal Ezdráš kněz a řekl k nim: Vy jste zhřešili, že jste pojímali ženy cizozemky, abyste přidali k provinění lidu Izraelského. 11 Protož již vyznejte se Hospodinu Bohu otců svých, a čiňte vůli jeho, a oddělte se od národů cizích, i od žen cizozemek. 12 I odpovědělo všecko to shromáždění, a řekli hlasem velikým: Podlé slova tvého povinni jsme tak učiniti. 13 Ale lidu mnoho jest, a prška, a nemůžeme vně státi. K tomu není ta práce jednoho dne ani dvou, nebo mnoho jest nás, kteříž jsme v tom přestoupili. 14 Nechť jsou postavena, prosíme, knížata naše ze všeho shromáždění, a kdož koli jest v městech našich, kterýž pojal ženy cizozemky, ať přijde v čas uložený, a s nimi starší z jednoho každého města i soudcové jejich, až bychom tak odvrátili hněv prchlivosti Boha našeho od sebe pro tu věc. 15 Takž Jonatan syn Azahelův, a Jachziáš syn Tekue, postaveni byli nad tím, Mesullam pak a Sabbetai, Levítové, pomáhali jim. 16 Tedy učinili tak při těch, jenž přestěhováni byli. I odděleni jsou Ezdráš kněz a muži přední čeledí otcovských po domích otců svých, všickni ti ze jména, a zasedli prvního dne měsíce desátého, aby to vyhledali. 17 Což i konali při všech mužích, kteříž byli pojali ženy cizozemky, až do prvního dne prvního měsíce. 18 Našli se pak z synů kněžských, jenž zpojímali ženy cizozemky tito: Z synů Jesua syna Jozadakova, a z bratří jeho: Maaseiáš, Eliezer, Jarib a Gedaliáš. 19 Ale povolili, aby zapudili ženy své. 1 Zatímco se Ezdráš modlil, vyznával hříchy a v pláči se před Božím domem vrhl k zemi, shromáždilo se k němu z Izraele převeliké shromáždění mužů, žen i dětí a lid se dal do usedavého pláče. 2 Tu promluvil Šekanjáš, syn Jechíelův, ze synů Élamových, a řekl Ezdrášovi: „Zpronevěřili jsme se svému Bohu, když jsme si přivedli ženy cizinky z národů země. Přesto je ještě pro Izraele naděje. 3 Uzavřeme nyní smlouvu se svým Bohem, že propustíme všechny ženy cizinky i jejich děti podle rozhodnutí Panovníka i těch, kdo se třesou před příkazem našeho Boha. Ať se stane podle Zákona! 4 Vstaň! To bude tvůj úkol. My jsme s tebou. Buď rozhodný a jednej!“ 5 Ezdráš vstal a vyzval předáky kněží, levitů i všeho Izraele k přísaze, že budou jednat podle toho slova. A oni přísahali. 6 Pak odešel Ezdráš od Božího domu a šel do komory Jóchanana, syna Eljašíbova. Vešel tam, nejedl chleba a nepil vody a truchlil nad zpronevěrou přesídlenců. 7 Dali rozhlásit všem synům přesídlenců v Judsku a Jeruzalémě, aby se shromáždili do Jeruzaléma. 8 Nedostaví-li se někdo do tří dnů podle rozhodnutí předáků a starších, všechen jeho majetek propadne klatbě a on bude vyloučen ze shromáždění přesídlenců. 9 K třetímu dni se shromáždili do Jeruzaléma všichni muži judští a benjamínští. Bylo to dvacátého dne devátého měsíce. Všechen lid se usadil na prostranství u Božího domu. Chvěli se kvůli té věci i kvůli dešťům. 10 Tu povstal kněz Ezdráš a řekl jim: „Zpronevěřili jste se, že jste si přivedli ženy cizinky. Rozmnožili jste provinění Izraele. 11 Nyní vzdejte chválu Hospodinu, Bohu svých otců, a jednejte podle jeho vůle. Oddělte se od národů země a od žen cizinek!“ 12 Celé shromáždění hlasitě odpovědělo: „Ano, budeme jednat podle tvého slova. 13 Avšak lidu je mnoho a je doba dešťů. Nemůžeme stát venku. To není záležitost, která se vyřídí za den nebo dva, vždyť tohoto přestupku se dopustilo mnoho z nás. 14 Ať naši předáci zastupují celé shromáždění. Každý, kdo si v našich městech přivedl ženu cizinku, přijde v určený čas a s ním starší příslušného města a jeho soudcové. Je třeba, abychom od sebe odvrátili planoucí hněv svého Boha a odstranili tuto věc.“ 15 Jen Jónatan, syn Asáelův, a Jachzejáš, syn Tikvův, se postavili proti tomu, a Mešulám a levita Šabetaj je podporovali. 16 Ale synové přesídlenců to učinili tak, že kněz Ezdráš si oddělil muže, představitele rodů, všechny jmenovitě podle jejich otcovských rodů. Zasedli prvního dne desátého měsíce, aby věc vyšetřili. 17 Do prvního dne prvního měsíce dokončili šetření u všech mužů, kteří si přivedli ženy cizinky. 18 Ukázalo se, že z kněžských synů si přivedli ženy cizinky tito: ze synů Jéšuy, syna Jósadakova, a z jeho bratří: Maasejáš, Elíezer, Jaríb a Gedaljáš. 19 Podáním ruky slíbili, že své ženy propustí. 1 Když Ezdráš ležel před Božím chrámem, modlil se a s pláčem vyznával hříchy, sešlo se k němu veliké množství Izraelců, mužů, žen i dětí a všichni usedavě plakali. 2 Tu k Ezdrášovi promluvil Šechaniáš, syn Jechielův ze synů Elamových: „Zradili jsme svého Boha, když jsme se ženili s cizinkami z okolních národů. Přesto však má Izrael ještě naději. 3 Zavážeme se teď před naším Bohem, že všechny ty ženy i s jejich dětmi propustíme. Zachováme se, jak nám radíš, pane, ty i ti, kdo se třesou před přikázáním našeho Boha. Ať se stane podle Zákona. 4 Vstaň a splň svůj úkol, jsme s tebou. Buď silný a jednej!“ 5 Ezdráš tedy vstal a přísahou zavázal přední kněze, levity i všechen Izrael, že se tak zachovají. Teprve když to odpřisáhli, 6 Ezdráš odešel od Božího chrámu do komory Jochanana, syna Eliašibova. Jak tam odešel, nic nejedl ani nepil, neboť truchlil nad nevěrností navrátilců. 7 Mezitím rozhlásili po Judsku a v Jeruzalémě, ať se všichni navrátilci shromáždí v Jeruzalémě. 8 Kdo nepřijde do tří dnů, tomu podle rozhodnutí představených a stařešinů propadne všechen majetek a bude vyloučen se shromáždění navrátilců. 9 Během tří dnů se všichni muži z Judy a Benjamína sešli do Jeruzaléma. Dvacátého dne devátého měsíce^[1] všichni seděli na prostranství před Božím chrámem a chvěli se – kvůli té věci i kvůli dešti. 10 Tu povstal kněz Ezdráš a promluvil k nim: „Sňatkem s cizinkami jste se zpronevěřili a rozmnožili jste vinu Izraele. 11 Proto teď Hospodinu, Bohu svých otců, přiznejte pravdu. Splňte jeho vůli a oddělte se od okolních národů i od těch cizinek.“ 12 Celé shromáždění odpovědělo hlasitým voláním: „Ano! Musíme udělat, co říkáš. 13 Je nás tu ale mnoho a je období dešťů. Nemůžeme stát venku. Nedá se to zvládnout za den nebo dva. Té věci se dopustilo příliš mnoho z nás. 14 Ať tedy celé shromáždění zastoupí naši vůdcové. Kdokoli se v našich městech oženil s cizinkami, ať se sem v určený čas dostaví se stařešiny a správci příslušného města, aby se od nás odvrátil hněv našeho Boha, který kvůli této věci vzplál.“ 15 Proti byl pouze Jonatan, syn Asaelův, a Jachziáš, syn Tikvy, za podpory levitů Mešulama a Šabataje. 16 Ostatní navrátilci však byli pro. 1 Während Esra vor dem Haus Gottes auf den Knien lag und weinend sein Gebet und sein Bekenntnis sprach, sammelte sich um ihn eine sehr große Menge von Männern, Frauen und Kindern aus Israel. Denn großes Weinen hatte das Volk ergriffen. 2 Schechanja, der Sohn Jehiëls, einer der Nachkommen Elams, nahm das Wort und sagte zu Esra: Ja, wir haben unserem Gott die Treue gebrochen; wir haben fremde Frauen aus der Bevölkerung des Landes geheiratet. Doch auch jetzt gibt es noch Hoffnung für Israel: 3 Wir wollen jetzt mit unserem Gott einen Bund schließen, dass wir alle fremden Frauen samt den von ihnen geborenen Kindern wegschicken nach dem Beschluss des Herrn und aller, die vor dem Gebot unseres Gottes zittern. Man handle nach der Weisung. 4 Steh auf! Denn dir obliegt die Sache. Wir aber stehen dir bei. Fass Mut und handle! 5 Da stand Esra auf; er ließ die Obersten der Priester, der Leviten und ganz Israels schwören, nach diesem Vorschlag zu handeln, und sie leisteten den Eid. 6 Dann verließ Esra den Platz vor dem Haus Gottes und ging in die Kammer Johanans, des Sohnes Eljaschibs. Dort verbrachte er die Nacht, aß aber kein Brot und trank kein Wasser; denn er trauerte über den Treubruch der Heimkehrer. Alle zitterten wegen der Sache, aber auch wegen der Regengüsse. 10 Der Priester Esra stand auf und sagte zu ihnen: Ihr habt einen Treubruch begangen; ihr habt fremde Frauen genommen und so die Schuld Israels noch größer gemacht. 11 So legt nun vor dem HERRN, dem Gott eurer Väter, ein Bekenntnis ab und tut, was er wünscht: Trennt euch von der Bevölkerung des Landes, insbesondere von den fremden Frauen! 12 Darauf antwortete die ganze Versammlung laut: Alles, was du uns gesagt hast, müssen wir tun. 13 Aber es sind viele Menschen und es ist Regenzeit; da kann man nicht im Freien bleiben und die Angelegenheit ist nicht an einem oder zwei Tagen abzumachen. Denn viele von uns haben sich in dieser Sache verfehlt. 14 Unsere Vorsteher sollen darum die ganze Versammlung vertreten. Alle, die in unseren Städten fremde Frauen geheiratet haben, sollen dann zu festgesetzten Zeiten herkommen, dazu die Ältesten und Richter jeder einzelnen Stadt, bis wir den Zorn unseres Gottes, der wegen dieser Sache entbrannt ist, von uns abgewendet haben. 15 Nur Jonatan, der Sohn Asaëls, und Jachseja, der Sohn Tikwas, standen dagegen auf; Meschullam und der Levit Schabbetai unterstützten sie. 16 Die Heimkehrer machten es aber so. Der Priester Esra wählte Männer aus, Häupter ihrer Familien, und alle mit Namen. Am ersten Tag des zehnten Monats traten sie zusammen, um die Sache zu untersuchen, 17 und am ersten Tag des ersten Monats waren sie fertig mit den Fällen aller Männer, die fremde Frauen geheiratet hatten.

15 Only Jonathan the son of Asahel and Jahzeiah the son of Tikvah opposed this, and Meshullam and Shabbethai the Levite supported them. (Ezd 8,16; Neh 11,16) 16 Then the returned exiles did so. Ezra the priest selected men,^[3] heads of fathers’ houses, according to their fathers’ houses, each of them designated by name. On the first day of the tenth month they sat down to examine the matter; 17 and by the first day of the first month they had come to the end of all the men who had married foreign women.

18 Now there were found some of the sons of the priests who had married foreign women: Maaseiah, Eliezer, Jarib, and Gedaliah, some of the sons of Jeshua the son of Jozadak and his brothers.
