1 I stalo se potom, že se David tázal Hospodina, řka: Mám-li jíti do některého města Judského? Jemuž odpověděl Hospodin: Jdi. I řekl David: Kam mám jíti? Odpověděl: Do Hebronu. 2 A protož bral se tam David, ano i obě manželky jeho, Achinoam Jezreelská, a Abigail žena někdy Nábale Karmelského. 3 Muže také své, kteříž s ním byli, pojal David, jednoho každého s čeledí jeho, a bydlili v městech Hebronských. 4 I přišli muži Judští, a pomazali tam Davida za krále nad domem Judským. Oznámili také Davidovi, řkouce: Muži Jábes Galád, oni pochovali Saule. 5 Tedy poslav David posly k mužům Jábes Galád, řekl jim: Požehnaní jste vy před Hospodinem, že jste učinili to milosrdenství pánu svému Saulovi, pochovavše ho. 6 Protož nyní učiniž s vámi Hospodin milosrdenství a pravdu; ano i jáť s vámi učiním milost, kteříž jste to učinili. 7 A tak tedy posilňtež rukou svých a buďtež stateční; nebo ač umřel pán váš Saul, však již mne pomazali dům Judův za krále nad sebou. 8 Abner pak syn Nerův, hejtman vojska Saulova, vzal Izbozeta syna Saulova a uvedl ho do Mahanaim. 9 A ustavil ho králem nad Galád a nad Assur, a nad Jezreel, a nad Efraimem, a nad Beniaminem, i nade vším Izraelem. 10 Ve čtyřidcíti letech byl Izbozet syn Saulův, když počal kralovati nad Izraelem, a kraloval dvě létě. (Toliko dům Judův přídržel se Davida. 11 A byl počet dnů, v nichž byl David králem v Hebronu nad domem Judovým, sedm let a šest měsíců.) 12 Potom vytáhl Abner syn Nerův, a služebníci Izbozeta syna Saulova z Mahanaim do Gabaon. 13 Joáb také syn Sarvie a služebníci Davidovi vytáhše, potkali se s nimi právě u rybníka Gabaon. I pozůstali tito u rybníka s strany jedné, oni pak u rybníka s druhé strany. 14 Tedy řekl Abner Joábovi: Nechť vystoupí nyní mládenci a pohrají před námi. I řekl Joáb: Nechť vystoupí. 15 A tak vystoupili a vyšli v rovném počtu, dvanácte z Beniamina, z strany Izbozeta syna Saulova, a dvanácte z služebníků Davidových. 16 Kteřížto ujavše jeden každý za hlavu bližního svého, vrazil meč svůj v bok tovaryše svého, i padli spolu. Protož nazváno jest místo to Helkat Hassurim, a jest v Gabaon. 17 I byla bitva velmi veliká v ten den, a poražen jest Abner i muži Izraelští od služebníků Davidových. 18 Byli tu také tři synové Sarvie: Joáb, Abizai a Azael. Azael pak byl čerstvý na nohy své jako srna v poli. 19 I honil Azael Abnera, a neuhnul se na pravo ani na levo, běže za Abnerem. 20 Ohlédl se pak Abner zpátkem a řekl: Ty-li jsi Azael? Odpověděl: Jsem. 21 Tedy řekl mu Abner: Uchyl se na pravo aneb na levo, a jmi sobě jednoho z mládenců těch, a vezmi sobě kořisti jeho. Ale nechtěl Azael uchýliti se od něho. 22 Ještě znovu Abner řekl Azaelovi: Uchyl se ode mne, sic jináč přirazím tě až k zemi, a jak bych směl pohleděti na Joába bratra tvého? 23 Když pak nechtěl ustoupiti, uhodil ho Abner kopím pod páté žebro, tak že vyniklo kopí hřbetem jeho; a padl tu na tom místě, na kterémž i umřel. A kdožkoli přicházeli k místu, na němž padl Azael a umřel, zastavovali se. 24 Ale Joáb a Abizai honili Abnera. Slunce pak již bylo zapadlo, když oni přišli ku pahrbku Amma, jenž jest naproti Giach, cestou k poušti Gabaon. 25 Tedy sešli se synové Beniamin za Abnerem, a jsouce spolu v houfu, postavili se na vrchu pahrbku jednoho. 26 Odkudž zavolal Abner na Joába, řka: Zdaliž bez přestání sžírati bude meč tvůj? Nevíš-liž, že hořkost bývá naposledy? Dokudž tedy nerozkážeš lidu navrátiti se od honění bratří svých? 27 I řekl Joáb: Živť jest Bůh, že kdybys byl nemluvil, hned ráno byl by odšel lid, jeden každý nechaje honění bratra svého. 28 Tedy zatroubil Joáb v troubu, a zastavil se všecken lid, a nehonili více Izraele, aniž více bojovali. 29 A tak Abner i lid jeho šli přes pole celou tu noc, a přepravili se přes Jordán, a prošedše všecku Betoron, přišli do Mahanaim. 30 Ale Joáb navrátiv se od honění Abnera, shromáždil všecken lid, a nedostávalo se z služebníků Davidových devatenácti mužů a Azaele. 31 Služebníci pak Davidovi zbili z Beniaminských a z mužů Abnerových tři sta a šedesáte mužů, kteříž tu zahynuli. 32 A vzavše Azaele, pohřbili jej v hrobě otce jeho, kterýž byl v Betlémě. Potom šli celou tu noc Joáb a muži jeho; i rozednilo se, když přicházeli do Hebronu.

1 Potom se David doptával Hospodina: „Mám vystoupit do některého judského města?“ Hospodin mu řekl: „Vystup.“ David se tázal: „Kam mám vystoupit?“ On řekl: „Do Chebrónu.“ 2 David tam tedy vystoupil i se svými dvěma ženami, s Achínoamou Jizreelskou a s Abígajilou, ženou po Nábalovi Karmelském. 3 Také své muže, kteří byli s ním, přivedl David i s jejich rodinami. Usadili se v městech chebrónských. 4 I přišli judští muži a pomazali tam Davida za krále nad domem judským. Potom bylo Davidovi oznámeno: „Muži z Jábeše v Gileádu, ti pochovali Saula.“ 5 David poslal k mužům v Jábeši v Gileádu posly se vzkazem: „Jste Hospodinovi požehnaní. Prokázali jste milosrdenství svému pánu Saulovi tím, že jste ho pochovali. 6 Nechť nyní Hospodin prokáže milosrdenství a věrnost vám. I já vám budu prokazovat dobro za to, co jste učinili. 7 Teď jednejte rozhodně a buďte stateční. Váš pán Saul zemřel; avšak rovněž mne pomazal dům judský za krále nad sebou.“ 8 Ale Abnér, syn Nérův, velitel Saulova vojska, vzal Íš-bóšeta, syna Saulova, a přivedl ho do Machanajimu. 9 Ustanovil ho králem Gileádu, Ašúrců a Jizreelu i nad Efrajimem, Benjamínem a celým Izraelem. 10 Íš-bóšetovi, synu Saulovu, bylo čtyřicet let, když začal nad Izraelem kralovat. Kraloval dva roky. Za Davidem stál pouze dům judský. 11 David byl v Chebrónu králem nad domem judským celkem sedm let a šest měsíců. 12 Když Abnér, syn Nérův, vytáhl se služebníky Íš-bóšeta, syna Saulova, z Machanajimu do Gibeónu, 13 vytáhl také Jóab, syn Serújin, a Davidovi služebníci. Narazili na sebe u Gibeónského rybníka. Usadili se u rybníka, jedni z jedné, druzí z druhé strany rybníka. 14 Abnér navrhl Jóabovi: „Ať nastoupí družiny a uspořádají před námi bojové hry.“ Jóab souhlasil: „Ať nastoupí.“ 15 Nastoupili tedy proti sobě ve stejném počtu, dvanáct za Benjamína, za Íš-bóšeta, syna Saulova, a dvanáct ze služebníků Davidových. 16 Jeden druhého uchopil za hlavu a vrazil mu do boku dýku. Tak padli zároveň. Ono místo bylo nazváno Chelkat-súrím a leží v Gibeónu. 17 Onoho dne se strhl velmi tuhý boj. Abnér s izraelskými muži byl Davidovými služebníky poražen. 18 Byli tam i tři Serújini synové Jóab, Abíšaj a Asáel. Asáel byl hbitých nohou jako gazela na poli. 19 Pronásledoval Abnéra a neodbočoval od něho vpravo ani vlevo. 20 Abnér se k němu obrátil a tázal se: „Ty jsi Asáel?“ On odvětil: „Jsem.“ 21 Abnér mu řekl: „Odboč vpravo nebo vlevo, zmocni se někoho z družiny a vezmi si jeho výzbroj.“ Ale Asáel od něho nechtěl uhnout. 22 Abnér domlouval Asáelovi ještě jednou: „Uhni ode mne; proč tě mám srazit k zemi? Jak bych se mohl podívat na tvého bratra Jóaba?“ 23 Protože odmítal uhnout, vrazil mu Abnér pod žebra kopí a kopí jím projelo. I padl tam a na místě zemřel. Každý, kdo přijde k místu, kde Asáel padl a zemřel, zůstane stát. 24 Jóab s Abíšajem pronásledovali Abnéra. Dál již nebojovali. 29 Abnér a jeho muži šli po celou tu noc pustinou, přešli Jordán, prošli celý Bitrón, až přišli do Machanajimu. 30 Když se Jóab vrátil a přestal Abnéra honit, shromáždil všechen lid. Z Davidových služebníků pohřešili devatenáct mužů a Asáela. 31 Z Benjamínců a z mužů Abnérových zemřelo tři sta šedesát mužů, které pobili Davidovi služebníci. 32 Asáela přenesli a pochovali v hrobě jeho otce v Betlémě. Jóab šel se svými muži po celou noc; svítání je zastihlo v Chebrónu.

Iš-bošet králem Izraele

8 Saulův vojevůdce Abner, syn Nerův, tehdy vzal Saulova syna Iš-bošeta, odvedl ho do Machanajim 9 a prohlásil ho králem Gileádu, Ašerovců,^[1] Jizreele, Efraima, Benjamína a celého Izraele. 10 Iš-bošet, syn Saulův, začal kralovat ve věku čtyřiceti let a kraloval dva roky. Dům Judy ale následoval Davida. 11 David kraloval nad domem Judy v Hebronu sedm let a šest měsíců. 12 Abner, syn Nerův, vytáhl s vojáky Saulova syna Iš-bošeta z Machanajim do Gibeonu. 13 S Davidovými vojáky pak vytáhl Joáb, syn Ceruji, a setkali se s nimi u Gibeonské nádrže. Jedni zůstali na jedné straně nádrže a druzí na druhé. 14 Abner tehdy promluvil k Joábovi: „Ať raději předstoupí mládenci a ukáží před námi, co dovedou.“ „Budiž, ať předstoupí,“ odpověděl Joáb. 15 Nastoupili tedy, z každé strany ve stejném počtu: dvanáct Benjamínců za Saulova syna Iš-bošeta proti dvanácti Davidovým vojákům. 16 Každý popadl svého protivníka za hlavu a vrazil mu do boku meč, takže padli všichni společně. Proto se tomu místu u Gibeonu říká Chelkat-curim, Pole břitů. 17 V urputné bitvě, která se toho dne strhla, pak Davidovi vojáci Abnera a zbytek Izraelců porazili. 18 Byli tam také tři synové Ceruji: Joáb, Abišaj a Asael. Kopí jím projelo naskrz, takže tam padl a na místě zemřel. Každý, kdo přišel na místo, kde Asael padl a zemřel, se tam zastavil. 24 Potom se za Abnerem pustili Joáb s Abišajem. Když už slunce zapadalo, dorazili k pahorku Ama naproti Giachu cestou ke gibeonské poušti. 25 Benjamínovci se v jednom šiku shromáždili k Abnerovi na vrchol pahorku. 26 Abner pak zavolal na Joába: „To musí meč stále hubit? Copak nevíš, že nakonec zbude jen hořkost? Kdy už konečně řekneš svým mužům, ať přestanou honit své bratry?“ 27 Joáb mu odpověděl: „Jako že je živ Hospodin, kdybys nepromluvil, mí muži by nepřestali stíhat své bratry až do rána!“ 28 Poté Joáb zatroubil na roh a všichni jeho muži přestali Izraelce pronásledovat. Boj skončil. 29 Abner pak se svými muži šel celou noc přes pláň Arava, přebrodili Jordán, šli celé dopoledne, až přišli do Machanajim. 30 Joáb přestal pronásledovat Abnera a shromáždil své vojsko; kromě Asaela scházelo z Davidových vojáků 19 mužů. 31 (Davidovi vojáci ale pobili 360 Benjamínců, kteří byli s Abnerem.) 32 Potom vzali Asaela a pohřbili ho v hrobě jeho otce v Betlémě. Joáb pak se svými muži šel celou noc, až za svítání dorazili do Hebronu.

David Anointed King of Judah

1 After this David inquired of the Lord, “Shall I go up into any of the cities of Judah?” And the Lord said to him, “Go up.” David said, “To which shall I go up?” And he said, “To Hebron.” (Jz 14,13; 1S 22,10) 2 So David went up there, and his two wives also, Ahinoam of Jezreel and Abigail the widow of Nabal of Carmel. (1S 25,42) 3 And David brought up his men who were with him, everyone with his household, and they lived in the towns of Hebron. Ish-bosheth Made King of Israel

8 But Abner the son of Ner, commander of Saul’s army, took Ish-bosheth the son of Saul and brought him over to Mahanaim, (Jz 13,26; 1S 14,50) 9 and he made him king over Gilead and the Ashurites and Jezreel and Ephraim and Benjamin and all Israel. 10 Ish-bosheth, Saul’s son, was forty years old when he began to reign over Israel, and he reigned two years. But the house of Judah followed David. 11 And the time that David was king in Hebron over the house of Judah was seven years and six months. (2S 2,4; 2S 5,5; 1Kr 2,11)

The Battle of Gibeon

12 Abner the son of Ner, and the servants of Ish-bosheth the son of Saul, went out from Mahanaim to Gibeon. 13 And Joab the son of Zeruiah and the servants of David went out and met them at the pool of Gibeon. And they sat down, the one on the one side of the pool, and the other on the other side of the pool. (Jr 41,12) 14 And Abner said to Joab, “Let the young men arise and compete before us.” And Joab said, “Let them arise.” 15 Then they arose and passed over by number, twelve for Benjamin and Ish-bosheth the son of Saul, and twelve of the servants of David. 16 And each caught his opponent by the head and thrust his sword in his opponent’s side, so they fell down together. Therefore that place was called Helkath-hazzurim,^[1] which is at Gibeon. 17 And the battle was very fierce that day. And Abner and the men of Israel were beaten before the servants of David. 18 And the three sons of Zeruiah were there, Joab, Abishai, and Asahel. Now Asahel was as swift of foot as a wild gazelle. 19 And Asahel pursued Abner, and as he went, he turned neither to the right hand nor to the left from following Abner. 20 Then Abner looked behind him and said, “Is it you, Asahel?” And he answered, “It is I.” 21 Abner said to him, “Turn aside to your right hand or to your left, and seize one of the young men and take his spoil.” But Asahel would not turn aside from following him. 22 And Abner said again to Asahel, “Turn aside from following me. Why should I strike you to the ground? How then could I lift up my face to your brother Joab?” 23 But he refused to turn aside. Therefore Abner struck him in the stomach with the butt of his spear, so that the spear came out at his back. And he fell there and died where he was. And all who came to the place where Asahel had fallen and died, stood still. (2S 3,27; 2S 4,6; 2S 20,10) 24 But Joab and Abishai pursued Abner. And as the sun was going down they came to the hill of Ammah, which lies before Giah on the way to the wilderness of Gibeon. 25 And the people of Benjamin gathered themselves together behind Abner and became one group and took their stand on the top of a hill. 26 Then Abner called to Joab, “Shall the sword devour forever? Do you not know that the end will be bitter? How long will it be before you tell your people to turn from the pursuit of their brothers?” 27 And Joab said, “As God lives, if you had not spoken, surely the men would not have given up the pursuit of their brothers until the morning.” (2S 2,14; Př 17,14) 28 So Joab blew the trumpet, and all the men stopped and pursued Israel no more, nor did they fight anymore. 29 And Abner and his men went all that night through the Arabah. They crossed the Jordan, and marching the whole morning, they came to Mahanaim. (Dt 1,1; Jz 13,26; 2S 2,8) 30 Joab returned from the pursuit of Abner. And when he had gathered all the people together, there were missing from David’s servants nineteen men besides Asahel. 31 But the servants of David had struck down of Benjamin 360 of Abner’s men. 32 And they took up Asahel and buried him in the tomb of his father, which was at Bethlehem. And Joab and his men marched all night, and the day broke upon them at Hebron.

1 And it came to pass after this, that David enquired of the LORD, saying, Shall I go up into any of the cities of Judah? And the LORD said unto him, Go up. And David said, Whither shall I go up? And he said, Unto Hebron. 2 So David went up thither, and his two wives also, Ahinoam the Jezreelitess, and Abigail Nabal' wife the Carmelite. 3 And his men that were with him did David bring up, every man with his household: and they dwelt in the cities of Hebron. 4 And the men of Judah came, and there they anointed David king over the house of Judah. And they told David, saying, That the men of Jabeshgilead were they that buried Saul. 5 And David sent messengers unto the men of Jabeshgilead, and said unto them, Blessed be ye of the LORD, that ye have shewed this kindness unto your lord, even unto Saul, and have buried him. 6 And now the LORD shew kindness and truth unto you: and I also will requite you this kindness, because ye have done this thing. 7 Therefore now let your hands be strengthened, and be ye valiant: for your master Saul is dead, and also the house of Judah have anointed me king over them. 8 But Abner the son of Ner, captain of Saul' host, took Ishbosheth the son of Saul, and brought him over to Mahanaim; 9 And made him king over Gilead, and over the Ashurites, and over Jezreel, and over Ephraim, and over Benjamin, and over all Israel. 10 Ishbosheth Saul' son was forty years old when he began to reign over Israel, and reigned two years. But the house of Judah followed David. 11 And the time that David was king in Hebron over the house of Judah was seven years and six months. 12 And Abner the son of Ner, and the servants of Ishbosheth the son of Saul, went out from Mahanaim to Gibeon. 13 And Joab the son of Zeruiah, and the servants of David, went out, and met together by the pool of Gibeon: and they sat down, the one on the one side of the pool, and the other on the other side of the pool. 14 And Abner said to Joab, Let the young men now arise, and play before us. And Joab said, Let them arise. 15 Then there arose and went over by number twelve of Benjamin, which pertained to Ishbosheth the son of Saul, and twelve of the servants of David. 16 And they caught every one his fellow by the head, and thrust his sword in his fellow' side; so they fell down together: wherefore that place was called Helkathhazzurim, which is in Gibeon. 17 And there was a very sore battle that day; and Abner was beaten, and the men of Israel, before the servants of David. 18 And there were three sons of Zeruiah there, Joab, and Abishai, and Asahel: and Asahel was as light of foot as a wild roe. 19 And Asahel pursued after Abner; and in going he turned not to the right hand nor to the left from following Abner. 20 Then Abner looked behind him, and said, Art thou Asahel? And he answered, I am . 21 And Abner said to him, Turn thee aside to thy right hand or to thy left, and lay thee hold on one of the young men, and take thee his armour. But Asahel would not turn aside from following of him. 22 And Abner said again to Asahel, Turn thee aside from following me: wherefore should I smite thee to the ground? how then should I hold up my face to Joab thy brother? 23 Howbeit he refused to turn aside: wherefore Abner with the hinder end of the spear smote him under the fifth rib , that the spear came out behind him; and he fell down there, and died in the same place: and it came to pass, that as many as came to the place where Asahel fell down and died stood still. 24 Joab also and Abishai pursued after Abner: and the sun went down when they were come to the hill of Ammah, that lieth before Giah by the way of the wilderness of Gibeon. 25 And the children of Benjamin gathered themselves together after Abner, and became one troop, and stood on the top of an hill. 26 Then Abner called to Joab, and said, Shall the sword devour for ever? knowest thou not that it will be bitterness in the latter end? how long shall it be then, ere thou bid the people return from following their brethren? 27 And Joab said, As God liveth, unless thou hadst spoken, surely then in the morning the people had gone up every one from following his brother. 28 So Joab blew a trumpet, and all the people stood still, and pursued after Israel no more, neither fought they any more. 29 And Abner and his men walked all that night through the plain, and passed over Jordan, and went through all Bithron, and they came to Mahanaim. 30 And Joab returned from following Abner: and when he had gathered all the people together, there lacked of David' servants nineteen men and Asahel. 31 But the servants of David had smitten of Benjamin, and of Abner' men, so that three hundred and threescore men died. 32 And they took up Asahel, and buried him in the sepulchre of his father, which was in Bethlehem. And Joab and his men went all night, and they came to Hebron at break of day.
