1Protož poslal Hospodin Nátana k Davidovi. Kterýž přišed k němu, řekl jemu: Dva muži byli v městě jednom, jeden bohatý a druhý chudý.2Bohatý měl ovec i volů velmi mnoho,3Chudý pak neměl nic, kromě jednu ovečku malou, kterouž byl koupil a choval, až i odrostla při něm a při dětech jeho tolikéž. Chléb jeho jedla a z číše jeho pila, a v lůnu jeho spávala, a tak byla mu jako za dceru.4Když pak přišel pocestný k tomu bohatému člověku, líto mu bylo vzíti z ovcí aneb z volů svých, což by připravil pocestnému, kterýž k němu přišel, ale vzav ovečku toho chudého člověka, připravil ji muži, kterýž byl přišel k němu.5Tedy rozhněval se David na muže toho náramně a řekl Nátanovi: Živť jest Hospodin, že hoden jest smrti muž, kterýž to učinil.6Ovečku také tu zaplatí čtvernásobně, proto že učinil věc tu, a nelitoval ho.7I řekl Nátan Davidovi: Ty jsi ten muž! Takto praví Hospodin Bůh Izraelský: Já jsem tě pomazal, abys králem byl nad Izraelem, a vytrhl jsem tebe z ruky Saulovy.8A dal jsem tobě dům pána tvého, i ženy pána tvého v lůno tvé, dalť jsem také dům Izraelský a Judský, a bylo-liť by to málo, byl bych přidal mnohem více.9Pročež jsi sobě zlehčil slovo Hospodinovo, čině to, což se nelíbí jemu? Uriáše Hetejského zabil jsi mečem, a manželku jeho pojals sobě za ženu, samého pak zamordoval jsi mečem Ammonitských.10Protož nyní neodejdeť meč z domu tvého až na věky, proto že jsi pohrdl mnou, a vzal jsi manželku Uriáše Hetejského, aby byla žena tvá.11Takto praví Hospodin: Aj, já vzbudím proti tobě zlé z domu tvého, a vezma ženy tvé před očima tvýma, dám je bližnímu tvému, kterýž spáti bude s ženami tvými, an na to každý hledí.12A ačkoli ty učinil jsi to tajně, já však učiním to zjevně přede vším Izraelem a všechněm známě.13Tedy řekl David Nátanovi: Zhřešilť jsem Hospodinu. Zase řekl Nátan Davidovi: Tentýž Hospodin přenesl hřích tvůj, neumřeš.14Ale však, poněvadž jsi tou věcí dal příčinu nepřátelům Hospodinovým, aby se rouhali, protož ten syn, kterýž se narodil tobě, jistotně umře.15Potom odšel Nátan do domu svého. V tom Hospodin ranil dítě, kteréž byla porodila manželka Uriášova Davidovi, tak že pochybili o něm.16I modlil se David Bohu za to dítě a postil se, a všed, ležel přes noc na zemi.17A ačkoli starší domu jeho přišli k němu, aby ho zdvihli z země, on však nechtěl, aniž s nimi co jedl.18Stalo se pak dne sedmého, že umřelo dítě. I nesměli služebníci Davidovi toho oznámiti jemu, že by umřelo dítě; nebo pravili: Aj, když ještě bylo dítě živo, mluvili jsme jemu, a nechtěl slyšeti hlasu našeho, což pak když jemu díme: Umřelo dítě. Ovšem to tíže ponese.19Ale vida David, an služebníci jeho k sobě šepcí, srozuměl, že by umřelo dítě. I řekl David služebníkům svým: Co již umřelo dítě? Kteříž řekli: Umřelo.20Tedy vstav David s země, umyl se a pomazal se, a změnil roucho své, a všed do domu Hospodinova, pomodlil se. Potom vrátiv se do domu svého, rozkázal sobě dáti jísti a jedl.21Služebníci pak jeho řekli jemu: Co jsi to učinil? Pro dítě, když živo bylo, postils se a plakal, ale jakž dítě umřelo, vstal jsi a přijal jsi pokrm.22Kterýžto řekl: Pokudž ještě dítě živo bylo, postil jsem se a plakal, nebo jsem řekl: Kdo ví? Můžeť se smilovati nade mnou Hospodin, aby živo bylo dítě.23Nyní pak, poněvadž umřelo, proč se mám postiti? Zdaliž budu moci zase je vzkřísiti? Jáť půjdu k němu, ale ono se nenavrátí ke mně.24Potom David potěšiv Betsabé manželky své, všel k ní a spal s ní. I porodila syna, a nazval jméno jeho Šalamoun, a Hospodin miloval jej.25Protož poslal byl Nátana proroka, a nazval jméno jeho Jedidiah pro Hospodina.26Bojoval pak Joáb proti Rabba Ammonitských, a vzal město královské.27A poslav posly k Davidovi, řekl: Dobýval jsem Rabba a vzal jsem město vod.28Protož nyní sebera ostatek lidu, polož se proti městu a vezmi je, abych já nevzal města toho, a bylo by mně připisováno vítězství nad ním.29Tedy sebrav David všecken lid, vytáhl proti Rabba, kteréhož dobýval a vzal je.30A sňal korunu krále jejich s hlavy jeho, kteráž vážila centnéř zlata, a bylo v ní kamení drahé, a vstavena byla na hlavu Davidovu. Vyvezl též kořisti města velmi veliké.31Lid pak, kterýž v něm byl, vyvedl a dal jej pod pily a pod brány železné a pod sekery železné, a vehnal je do peci cihelné. A tak činil všechněm městům Ammonitským. Potom navrátil se David se vším lidem do Jeruzaléma.
— Davidovo pokání - Prorok Nátan ohlašuje králi Boží soud a vede jej k sebepoznání. V narozeném Šalomounovi dostává David novou naději.
1 Hospodin poslal k Davidovi Nátana. Ten k němu přišel a řekl mu: „V jednom městě byli dva muži, jeden boháč a druhý chudák.2 Boháč měl velmi mnoho bravu a skotu.3 Chudák neměl nic než jednu malou ovečku, kterou si koupil. Živil ji, rostla u něho spolu s jeho syny, jedla z jeho skývy chleba a pila z jeho poháru, spávala v jeho klíně a on ji měl jako dceru.4 Tu přišel k bohatému muži návštěvník. Jemu bylo líto vzít nějaký kus ze svého bravu či skotu, aby jej připravil poutníkovi, který k němu přišel. Vzal tedy ovečku toho chudého muže a připravil ji muži, který k němu přišel.“5 David vzplanul proti tomu muži náramným hněvem. Řekl Nátanovi: „Jakože živ je Hospodin, muž, který tohle spáchal, je synem smrti!6A tu ovečku nahradí čtyřnásobně zato, že něco takového spáchal a neměl soucitu.“ 7 Nátan Davidovi odvětil: „Ten muž jsi ty! Toto praví Hospodin, Bůh Izraele: Já jsem tě pomazal za krále nad Izraelem a já jsem tě vytrhl ze Saulových rukou.8 Dal jsem ti dům tvého pána a do tvé náruče ženy tvého pána, dal jsem ti dům Izraelův i Judův, a kdyby ti to bylo málo, přidal bych ti mnohem víc.9 Proč jsi pohrdl Hospodinovým slovem a dopustil ses toho, co je v jeho očích zlé? Chetejce Urijáše jsi zabil mečem a jeho ženu sis vzal za manželku, zavraždils ho mečem Amónovců.10 Nyní se už nikdy nevyhne meč tvému domu, protože jsi mnou pohrdl a vzal jsi Chetejci Urijášovi ženu, aby ti byla manželkou. 11 Toto praví Hospodin: Hle, já způsobím, aby proti tobě povstalo zlo z tvého domu. Před tvýma očima vezmu tvé ženy a dám je tomu, kdo je ti blízký; ten bude s tvými ženami spát za bílého dne.12 A ačkoli tys to spáchal tajně, já tuto věc učiním před celým Izraelem, a to za dne.“13 David Nátanovi řekl: „Zhřešil jsem proti Hospodinu.“ Nátan Davidovi pravil: „Týž Hospodin tvůj hřích sňal. Nezemřeš.14 Poněvadž jsi však touto věcí zavinil, aby nepřátelé Hospodina znevažovali, syn, který se ti narodí, musí zemřít.“ 15 Nátan pak odešel do svého domu. I zasáhl Hospodin dítě, které Davidovi porodila Urijášova žena, takže těžce onemocnělo.16David kvůli chlapci hledal Boha a tvrdě se postil, pak šel domů a ležel přes noc na zemi.17 Starší jeho domu k němu přistoupili, aby ho zvedli ze země, on však nechtěl, ba ani s nimi chléb nepojedl.18Sedmého dne dítě zemřelo. Davidovi služebníci se mu báli oznámit, že dítě zemřelo. Říkali: „Když dítě bylo ještě naživu, domlouvali jsme mu, ale neuposlechl nás. Jak bychom mu teď mohli říci: ‚Dítě zemřelo?‘ Provedl by něco zlého.“19 Když David viděl, že si jeho služebníci šeptají, porozuměl, že dítě zemřelo. David se tedy svých služebníků zeptal: „Dítě zemřelo?“ Odvětili: „Zemřelo.“20 A David vstal ze země, umyl se, pomazal se, převlékl si oděv, vešel do Hospodinova domu a klaněl se. Pak vstoupil do svého domu a požádal, aby mu předložili chléb, a jedl.21 Jeho služebníci mu pravili: „Jak můžeš takto jednat? Dokud dítě bylo naživu, postil ses a plakal. Jakmile dítě zemřelo, vstaneš a jíš chléb.“22 Odvětil: „Dokud dítě ještě žilo, postil jsem se a plakal, neboť jsem si říkal: Kdoví, zda se Hospodin nade mnou neslituje a zda dítě nezůstane naživu.23 Teď zemřelo. Proč bych se měl postit? Což je mohu ještě přivést zpět? Já půjdu k němu, ale ono se ke mně nevrátí.“24 Pak David potěšil svou ženu Bat-šebu, vešel k ní a spal s ní. I porodila syna a on mu dal jméno Šalomoun. Toho si Hospodin zamiloval25 a ohlásil skrze proroka Nátana, že ho mají pojmenovat Jedidjáš (to je Hospodinův miláček) kvůli Hospodinu.
— Pokoření Amónovců - Jóab dobývá sídelní město Rabu, předává však velení Davidovi, aby triumf patřil králi.
26 Jóab bojoval proti Rabě Amónovců; dobýval královské město.27 I poslal Jóab posly k Davidovi s hlášením: „Bojoval jsem proti Rabě a dobyl jsem Město vod.28 Nyní tedy seber zbytek lidu a polož se proti tomu městu a dobuď je, abych nedobyl to město já, aby nad ním nebylo provoláváno mé jméno.“29 David sebral všechen lid, táhl do Raby, bojoval proti ní a dobyl ji.30 Sňal z hlavy jejich Krále korunu, jejíž zlato s drahokamem vážilo talent. Bývala pak na hlavě Davidově. Z města odvezl též velké množství kořisti.31 Lid, který byl v něm, odvedl a postavil k pilám, železným špičákům a železným sekyrám a převedl je do cihelny. Tak naložil se všemi městy Amónovců. Pak se David i všechen lid vrátili do Jeruzaléma.
1Hospodin za Davidem poslal Nátana. Ten k němu přišel a řekl mu: „V jednom městě žili dva muži, jeden bohatý a jeden chudý.2Bohatý měl velikou spoustu ovcí a dobytka.3Chudý neměl nic než jednu malou ovečku, kterou koupil a choval. Jemu ale bylo líto vzít a připravit pro hosta jednu ze svých ovcí nebo dobytka, a tak vzal ovečku onoho chudáka a tu tomu příchozímu připravil.“5David se na toho muže hrozně rozhněval. „Jakože je živ Hospodin,“ řekl Nátanovi, „muž, který to spáchal, musí zemřít!6A tu ovečku zaplatí čtyřnásobně – za to, že provedl takovou věc a neměl slitování.“7„Ten muž jsi ty!“ řekl Nátan Davidovi. „Tak praví Hospodin, Bůh Izraele: Já jsem tě pomazal za krále nad Izraelem a já jsem tě vysvobodil ze Saulových rukou.8Dal jsem ti dům tvého pána. I ženy svého pána jsi dostal do klína. Dal jsem ti dům Izraele a Judy. A kdyby ti to bylo málo, přidal bych ti ještě mnohem víc!9Proč jsi pohrdl Hospodinovým slovem? Provedl jsi, co je v jeho očích zlé. Uriáše Chetejského jsi zabil mečem a jeho ženu sis vzal za manželku. Zavraždil jsi ho mečem Amonců!10Proto, že jsi mnou pohrdl a vzal sis za ženu manželku Uriáše Chetejského, se od tvého domu od nynějška nikdy neodvrátí meč.11Tak praví Hospodin: Hle, vzbudím proti tobě zlo z tvého vlastního domu. Před tvýma očima vezmu tvé ženy a dám je tvému bližnímu, aby s nimi spal všem na očích.12Ty jsi to udělal tajně, ale já to udělám veřejně, před celým Izraelem!“13„Zhřešil jsem proti Hospodinu!“ řekl mu na to David. „Ano,“ odpověděl mu Nátan, „ale Hospodin z tebe tvůj hřích sňal. Nezemřeš.14Protože jsi ale tímto činem znevážil Hospodina,[1] musí zemřít tvůj novorozený syn.“15A po těch slovech se Nátan vrátil domů. Hospodin pak postihl dítě, které Davidovi porodila Uriášova manželka, a to onemocnělo.16David kvůli tomu chlapci hledal Boha. Držel půst a v noci ležel na holé zemi.17Stařešinové jeho domu se postavili okolo, aby ho přiměli vstát ze země, ale on nechtěl. Ani pokrm od nich nepřijal.18Po sedmi dnech pak dítě zemřelo. Davidovi služebníci se mu chlapcovu smrt báli oznámit. „Když ještě chlapec žil,“ říkali si, „domlouvali jsme mu, ale nechtěl nás poslechnout. Co až mu řekneme: ‚Dítě umřelo?‘ Mohl by provést něco hrozného!“19David si ale všiml, že si jeho služebníci šeptají, a pochopil, že chlapec zemřel. „Dítě umřelo?“ zeptal se svých služebníků. „Ano, umřelo,“ odpověděli.20Nato David vstal ze země, a když se umyl, pomazal mastí a převlékl, šel se poklonit do Hospodinovy svatyně. Pak se vrátil domů, požádal o pokrm a pojedl.21„Co to děláš?“ řekli mu jeho služebníci. „Dokud chlapec žil, postil ses a plakal, ale jakmile zemřel, vstal jsi a dal ses do jídla!“22„Dokud chlapec žil,“ odpověděl jim, „postil jsem se a plakal, protože jsem si říkal: ‚Kdo ví? Třeba se nade mnou Hospodin slituje a nechá ho naživu.‘23Teď je mrtvý. Proč bych se měl postit? Copak ho mohu přivést zpět? Já půjdu za ním, ale on se ke mně nevrátí.“24Potom David utěšoval svou manželku Batšebu; přišel k ní a miloval se s ní. Když pak porodila syna, dala mu jméno Šalomoun, Pokojný. Hospodin si ho zamiloval25a skrze proroka Nátana sdělil, že pro Hospodina se bude jmenovat Jedidiáš, Miláček Hospodinův.26Joáb mezitím bojoval proti Rabě Amonců. Když to královské město téměř dobyl,27vyslal k Davidovi posly se vzkazem: „Zaútočil jsem na Rabu a dobyl jsem městský zdroj vody.28Vezmi tedy zbytek vojska, oblehni město a dobuď je, abych je nedobyl já a vítězství nebylo připisováno mně.“29David tedy vzal všechno zbývající vojsko a vytáhl proti Rabě. Zaútočil na ni a dobyl ji.30Potom sňal z Molochovy hlavy[2] korunu vážící talent[3] zlata. Měla na sobě drahokam, který pak David nosíval na hlavě. Vyvezl z města také veliké množství kořisti.31Jeho obyvatele odvedl a dal k pile, k železným dlátům a sekyrám; některé poslal do cihelny. Tak naložil se všemi městy Amonců. Potom se David se vším vojskem vrátil do Jeruzaléma.
1Darum schickte der HERR den Natan zu David; dieser ging zu David und sagte zu ihm: In einer Stadt lebten einst zwei Männer; der eine war reich, der andere arm. (2S 7,2; 2S 14,5)2Der Reiche besaß sehr viele Schafe und Rinder,3der Arme aber besaß nichts außer einem einzigen kleinen Lamm, das er gekauft hatte. Er zog es auf und es wurde bei ihm zusammen mit seinen Kindern groß. Es aß von seinem Stück Brot und es trank aus seinem Becher, in seinem Schoß lag es und war für ihn wie eine Tochter.4Da kam ein Besucher zu dem reichen Mann und er brachte es nicht über sich, eines von seinen Schafen oder Rindern zu nehmen, um es für den zuzubereiten, der zu ihm gekommen war. Darum nahm er dem Armen das Lamm weg und bereitete es für den Mann zu, der zu ihm gekommen war.5Da geriet David in heftigen Zorn über den Mann und sagte zu Natan: So wahr der HERR lebt: Der Mann, der das getan hat, verdient den Tod.6Das Lamm soll er vierfach ersetzen, weil er das getan und kein Mitleid gehabt hat. (Ex 21,37; 1Kr 20,40)7Da sagte Natan zu David: Du selbst bist der Mann. So spricht der HERR, der Gott Israels: Ich habe dich zum König von Israel gesalbt und ich habe dich aus der Hand Sauls gerettet. (1S 16,13)8Ich habe dir das Haus deines Herrn und die Frauen deines Herrn in den Schoß gegeben und ich habe dir das Haus Israel und Juda gegeben, und wenn das zu wenig ist, gebe ich dir noch manches andere dazu. (1S 25,42; 2S 2,4; 2S 5,3)9Aber warum hast du das Wort des HERRN verachtet und etwas getan, was ihm missfällt? Du hast den Hetiter Urija mit dem Schwert erschlagen und hast dir seine Frau zur Frau genommen; durch das Schwert der Ammoniter hast du ihn umgebracht. (2S 11,17)10Darum soll jetzt das Schwert auf ewig nicht mehr von deinem Haus weichen; denn du hast mich verachtet und dir die Frau des Hetiters genommen, damit sie deine Frau werde. (2S 13,28; 2S 18,14)11So spricht der HERR: Ich werde dafür sorgen, dass sich aus deinem eigenen Haus das Unheil gegen dich erhebt, und ich werde dir vor deinen Augen deine Frauen wegnehmen und sie einem andern geben; er wird am hellen Tag bei deinen Frauen liegen. (2S 16,22)12Ja, du hast es heimlich getan, ich aber werde es vor ganz Israel und am hellen Tag tun.13Darauf sagte David zu Natan: Ich habe gegen den HERRN gesündigt. Natan antwortete David: Der HERR hat dir deine Sünde vergeben; du wirst nicht sterben. (2S 24,10; Ž 51,2)14Weil du aber durch diese Tat den HERRN verworfen hast, muss der Sohn, der dir geboren wird, sterben.[1] (Ž 10,3; Ž 32,5)
Tod des Kindes
15Dann ging Natan nach Hause. Der HERR aber schlug das Kind, das die Frau des Urija dem David geboren hatte, und es wurde schwer krank. (1S 25,38)16David suchte Gott wegen des Knaben auf und fastete streng; und wenn er heimkam, legte er sich bei Nacht auf die bloße Erde. (1Kr 21,27)17Die Ältesten seines Hauses kamen zu ihm, um ihn dazu zu bewegen, von der Erde aufzustehen. Er aber wollte nicht und aß auch nicht mit ihnen. (1S 28,23)18Am siebten Tag aber starb das Kind. Davids Diener fürchteten sich, ihm mitzuteilen, dass das Kind tot war; denn sie sagten: Wir haben ihm zugeredet, als das Kind noch am Leben war; er aber hat nicht auf uns gehört. Wie können wir ihm jetzt sagen: Das Kind ist tot? Er würde ein Unheil anrichten.19David jedoch sah, dass seine Diener miteinander flüsterten, und merkte daran, dass das Kind tot war. Er fragte seine Diener: Ist das Kind tot? Sie antworteten: Ja, es ist tot. (Ž 41,8)20Da erhob sich David von der Erde, wusch sich, salbte sich, wechselte seine Kleider, ging zum Haus des HERRN und warf sich nieder. Als er dann nach Hause zurückkehrte, verlangte er zu essen. Man setzte ihm etwas vor und er aß.21Da fragten ihn seine Diener: Was soll das bedeuten, was du getan hast? Als das Kind noch am Leben war, hast du seinetwegen gefastet und geweint. Nachdem aber das Kind tot ist, stehst du auf und isst.22Er antwortete: Als das Kind noch am Leben war, habe ich gefastet und geweint; denn ich dachte: Wer weiß, vielleicht ist der HERR mir gnädig und das Kind bleibt am Leben. (Jl 2,12)23Jetzt aber, da es tot ist, warum soll ich da noch fasten? Kann ich es zurückholen? Ich werde einmal zu ihm gehen, aber es kommt nicht zu mir zurück. (Gn 37,35; Jb 7,9)24Und David tröstete seine Frau Batseba; er ging zu ihr hinein und schlief mit ihr. Und sie gebar einen Sohn und er gab ihm den Namen Salomo. Der HERR liebte Salomo (2S 11,27)25und sandte den Propheten Natan, damit er ihm um des HERRN willen den Namen Jedidja, der vom HERRN Geliebte, gebe.
Eroberung der Hauptstadt der Ammoniter
26Joab überzog das Rabba der Ammoniter mit Krieg und er eroberte diese Königsstadt. (2S 11,1)27Darauf schickte Joab Boten zu David und ließ ihm sagen: Ich habe gegen Rabba gekämpft und dabei auch die Wasserstadt eingenommen.28Darum versammle jetzt den Rest des Heeres, belagere die Stadt und nimm sie selbst ein, damit nicht ich sie einnehme und mein Name über ihr ausgerufen wird. (Dt 28,10)29David sammelte also das ganze Heer, zog nach Rabba, kämpfte gegen die Stadt und nahm sie ein.30Dann nahm er ihrem König die Krone vom Haupt, deren Gewicht ein Talent Gold betrug und an der ein kostbarer Stein war; sie wurde nun Davids Krone. Und er schaffte eine sehr große Beute aus der Stadt fort. (1Pa 20,2)31Auch ihre Einwohner führte er fort und stellte sie an die Steinsägen, an die eisernen Spitzhacken und an die eisernen Äxte und ließ sie in den Ziegeleien arbeiten. So machte er es mit allen Städten der Ammoniter. Dann kehrte David mit dem ganzen Heer nach Jerusalem zurück.[2]

And he brought it up, and it grew up with him and with his children. It used to eat of his morsel and drink from his cup and lie in his arms,[1] and it was like a daughter to him.4Now there came a traveler to the rich man, and he was unwilling to take one of his own flock or herd to prepare for the guest who had come to him, but he took the poor man’s lamb and prepared it for the man who had come to him.”5Then David’s anger was greatly kindled against the man, and he said to Nathan, “As the Lord lives, the man who has done this deserves to die, (Rt 3,13)6and he shall restore the lamb fourfold, because he did this thing, and because he had no pity.” (Ex 22,1; L 19,8)7Nathan said to David, “You are the man! Thus says the Lord, the God of Israel, ‘I anointed you king over Israel, and I delivered you out of the hand of Saul. (1S 16,13)8And I gave you your master’s house and your master’s wives into your arms and gave you the house of Israel and of Judah. And if this were too little, I would add to you as much more.9Why have you despised the word of the Lord, to do what is evil in his sight? You have struck down Uriah the Hittite with the sword and have taken his wife to be your wife and have killed him with the sword of the Ammonites. (Nu 15,31; 1S 15,19; 2S 11,15; 2S 11,17; 2S 11,27)10Now therefore the sword shall never depart from your house, because you have despised me and have taken the wife of Uriah the Hittite to be your wife.’11Thus says the Lord, ‘Behold, I will raise up evil against you out of your own house. David’s Child Dies
15Then Nathan went to his house. And the Lord afflicted the child that Uriah’s wife bore to David, and he became sick.16David therefore sought God on behalf of the child. And David fasted and went in and lay all night on the ground. (2S 13,31; 1Kr 21,27)17And the elders of his house stood beside him, to raise him from the ground, but he would not, nor did he eat food with them.18On the seventh day the child died. And the servants of David were afraid to tell him that the child was dead, for they said, “Behold, while the child was yet alive, we spoke to him, and he did not listen to us. How then can we say to him the child is dead? He may do himself some harm.”19But when David saw that his servants were whispering together, David understood that the child was dead. And David said to his servants, “Is the child dead?” They said, “He is dead.”20Then David arose from the earth and washed and anointed himself and changed his clothes. And he went into the house of the Lord and worshiped. He then went to his own house. And when he asked, they set food before him, and he ate. Solomon’s Birth
24Then David comforted his wife, Bathsheba, and went in to her and lay with her, and she bore a son, and he called his name Solomon. And the Lord loved him (1Pa 22,9; Mt 1,6)25and sent a message by Nathan the prophet. So he called his name Jedidiah,[3] because of the Lord.
Rabbah Is Captured
26Now Joab fought against Rabbah of the Ammonites and took the royal city. (Dt 3,11; 2S 11,1; 1Pa 20,1)27And Joab sent messengers to David and said, “I have fought against Rabbah; moreover, I have taken the city of waters.28Now then gather the rest of the people together and encamp against the city and take it, lest I take the city and it be called by my name.”29So David gathered all the people together and went to Rabbah and fought against it and took it.30And he took the crown of their king from his head. The weight of it was a talent[4] of gold, and in it was a precious stone, and it was placed on David’s head. And he brought out the spoil of the city, a very great amount.31And he brought out the people who were in it and set them to labor with saws and iron picks and iron axes and made them toil at[5] the brick kilns. And thus he did to all the cities of the Ammonites. Then David and all the people returned to Jerusalem.
