1 Stalo se také potom, že umřel král Ammonitský, a kraloval Chanun syn jeho po něm. 2 I řekl David: Učiním milosrdenství s Chanunem synem Náhasovým, jakož otec jeho učinil milosrdenství nade mnou. Tedy poslal David, aby ho potěšil skrze služebníky své pro otce jeho. I přišli služebníci Davidovi do země Ammonitských. 3 I řekla knížata Ammonitská k Chanunovi, pánu svému: Cožť se zdá, že David činí poctivost otci tvému, že poslal k tobě, kteříž by tě potěšili? Zdaliž ne proto, aby shlédl město a vyšpehoval je, a potom je podvrátil, poslal David služebníky své k tobě? 4 A tak Chanun vzav služebníky Davidovy, oholil každému půl brady, a zustřihoval roucha jejich až do polovice, totiž až do zadků jejich, a propustil je. 5 To když oznámili Davidovi, poslal proti nim, (nebo muži ti zohaveni byli velice), a řekl jim král: Pobuďte v Jerichu, dokudž neobrostou brady vaše, potom se navrátíte. 6 Vidouce pak Ammonitští, že se zošklivili Davidovi, poslavše, najali ze mzdy z Syrie z domu Rohob, a z Syrie Soba dvadcet tisíců pěších, a od krále Maacha tisíc mužů, a od Istoba dvanácte tisíc mužů. 7 Což uslyšev David, poslal Joába se vším vojskem udatných. 8 A tak vytáhše Ammonitští, šikovali se k boji u brány, Syrští také, Soba a Rohob, a Istob i Maacha zvláště byli na poli. 9 A protož vida Joáb proti sobě sšikovaný boj s předu i s zadu, vybrav některé ze všech výborných Izraelských, sšikoval je také proti Syrským. 10 Ostatek pak lidu dal pod správu Abizai bratra svého, a sšikoval jej proti Ammonitským. 11 A řekl: Jestliže Syrští budou silnější mne, přispěješ mi na pomoc; jestliže pak Ammonitští silnější budou tebe, také přispěji, abych pomohl tobě. 12 Posiliž se, a buďme udatní, bojujíce za lid náš a za města Boha našeho, Hospodin pak učiní, což se jemu dobře líbiti bude. 13 I přistoupil Joáb s lidem svým k bitvě proti Syrským, a oni utekli před ním. 14 Tedy Ammonitští vidouce, že utíkají Syrští, utekli i oni před Abizai a vešli do města. I navrátil se Joáb od Ammonitských a přišel do Jeruzaléma. 15 Ale Syrští vidouce, že by poraženi byli od Izraele, sebrali se vespolek. 16 Poslal také Hadarezer a vyvedl Syrské, kteříž bydlejí za řekou, a přišli k Helam; Sobach pak, hejtman vojska Hadarezerova, vedl je. 17 I oznámeno to Davidovi. Kterýžto shromáždiv všecken lid Izraelský, přepravil se přes Jordán, a přitáhli k Helam. I sšikovali se Syrští proti Davidovi, a bojovali proti němu. 18 Tedy utekli Syrští před Izraelem, a porazil David z Syrských sedm set vozů a čtyřidceti tisíc jezdců. Sobacha také hejtmana vojska toho ranil, i umřel tu. 19 Když pak viděli všickni králové, kteříž byli při Hadarezerovi, že jsou poraženi od Izraele, vešli v pokoj s Izraelem a sloužili jemu. A nesměli již více Syrští táhnouti na pomoc Ammonitským.

Aramejci ze Sóby a Rechóbu a Íš-tób a Maaka stáli stranou v poli. 9 Když Jóab spatřil, že má proti sobě bitevní řady zpředu i zezadu, vybral si nejlepší ze všech izraelských mladíků a seřadil je proti Aramejcům. 10 Zbytek lidu podřídil svému bratru Abíšajovi a seřadil jej proti Amónovcům. 11 Řekl: „Budou-li mít Aramejci nade mnou převahu, přijdeš mi na pomoc. Budou-li Amónovci mít převahu nad tebou, přijdu ti na pomoc já. 12 Buď rozhodný! Vzchopme se! Za náš lid, za města našeho Boha! Hospodin nechť učiní, co uzná za dobré.“ 13 Jóab a lid, který byl s ním, se dali do boje proti Aramejcům; ti před ním utekli. 14 Když Amónovci viděli, že Aramejci utíkají, utekli také oni před Abíšajem a vešli do města. Jóab nechal Amónovce a přišel do Jeruzaléma. 15 Když Aramejci viděli, že jsou Izraelem poraženi, opět se shromáždili. 16 Hadad-ezer vydal rozkaz, aby vytáhli též Aramejci za Řekou. Ti přišli do Chélamu. V jejich čele byl Šóbak, velitel Hadad-ezerova vojska. 17 Oznámili to Davidovi a on shromáždil celý Izrael, překročil Jordán a přišel do Chélamu. Aramejci se proti Davidovi seřadili a bojovali s ním. 18 Aramejci se však dali před Izraelem na útěk. David pobil koně od sedmi set aramejských vozů a čtyřicet tisíc jezdců. Zabil také Šóbaka, velitele vojska; ten na místě zemřel. 19 Když všichni králové, Hadad-ezerovi služebníci, viděli, že jsou Izraelem poraženi, uzavřeli s Izraelem příměří a sloužili mu. Aramejci se pak už báli jít Amónovcům na pomoc.

Porážka Amonců a Aramejců

Ať Hospodin učiní, co se mu zalíbí.“ 13 Nato se Joáb se svým vojskem pustil do boje proti Aramejcům a ti se před nimi dali na útěk. 14 Jakmile Amonci uviděli, že Aramejci utekli, dali se i oni na útěk před Abišajem a stáhli se do města. Joáb tehdy ukončil boj proti Amoncům a vrátil se do Jeruzaléma. 15 Aramejci viděli, že je Izrael porazil, a tak se přeskupili. 16 Hadad-ezer poslal také pro Aramejce z druhého břehu Eufratu, a když je přivedl, přitáhli do Chelamu v čele s Hadad-ezerovým vojevůdcem Šobachem. 17 Když se to David dozvěděl, shromáždil celý Izrael, překročil Jordán a přitáhl k Chelamu. Aramejci se sešikovali proti Davidovi a pustili se s ním do boje. 18 Museli se ale před Izraelem dát na útěk. David mezi Aramejci pobil 700 vozatajů a 40 000 pěšáků.^[1] Jejich vojevůdce Šobacha zranil tak, že na místě zemřel. 19 Všichni králové, kteří byli Hadad-ezerovými vazaly, viděli, že ho Izrael porazil. Uzavřeli tedy s Izraelci mír a stali se jejich vazaly. Aramejci se pak báli přijít ještě někdy Amoncům na pomoc.

David Defeats Ammon and Syria

1 After this the king of the Ammonites died, and Hanun his son reigned in his place. And David’s servants came into the land of the Ammonites. So Joab returned from the children of Ammon, and came to Jerusalem. 15 And when the Syrians saw that they were smitten before Israel, they gathered themselves together. 16 And Hadarezer sent, and brought out the Syrians that were beyond the river: and they came to Helam; and Shobach the captain of the host of Hadarezer went before them. 17 And when it was told David, he gathered all Israel together, and passed over Jordan, and came to Helam. And the Syrians set themselves in array against David, and fought with him. 18 And the Syrians fled before Israel; and David slew the men of seven hundred chariots of the Syrians, and forty thousand horsemen, and smote Shobach the captain of their host, who died there. 19 And when all the kings that were servants to Hadarezer saw that they were smitten before Israel, they made peace with Israel, and served them. So the Syrians feared to help the children of Ammon any more.
