1L’Eternel apparut à Abraham près des chênes de Mamré. Abraham était assis à l’entrée de sa tente. C’était l’heure de la forte chaleur.2Il regarda et aperçut soudain trois hommes[1] qui se tenaient à quelque distance de lui. Dès qu’il les vit, il courut à leur rencontre depuis l’entrée de sa tente et se prosterna jusqu’à terre. (Gn 19:1; He 13:2)3– Mes seigneurs, leur dit-il, faites-moi la faveur de ne pas passer près de chez votre serviteur sans vous arrêter!4Permettez-moi d’aller chercher un peu d’eau pour que vous vous laviez les pieds, puis vous vous reposerez là sous cet arbre.5Je vous apporterai un morceau de pain et vous reprendrez des forces avant de poursuivre votre chemin puisque vous êtes passés si près de chez votre serviteur. Ils répondirent: Très bien, fais comme tu as dit!6Abraham se dépêcha d’entrer dans sa tente et de dire à Sara: Pétris vite trois mesures[2] de fleur de farine, et fais-en des galettes.7Puis il courut au troupeau et choisit un veau gras à la chair bien tendre, il l’amena à un serviteur qui se hâta de l’apprêter.8Il prit du fromage et du lait avec la viande qu’il avait fait apprêter, et les apporta aux trois hommes. Abraham se tint auprès d’eux sous l’arbre pendant qu’ils mangeaient.9Ils lui demandèrent alors: Où est Sara, ta femme? – Elle est là dans la tente, leur répondit-il.10Puis l’un d’eux lui dit: L’an prochain, à la même époque, je ne manquerai pas de revenir chez toi, et ta femme Sara aura un fils[3]. Derrière lui, à l’entrée de la tente, Sara entendit ces paroles. (Rm 9:9)11Or, Abraham et Sara étaient tous deux très âgés et Sara avait dépassé l’âge d’avoir des enfants.12Alors Sara rit en elle-même en se disant: Maintenant, vieille comme je suis, aurais-je encore du plaisir? Mon mari aussi est un vieillard[4]. (1P 3:6)13Alors l’Eternel dit à Abraham: Pourquoi donc Sara a-t-elle ri en se disant: « Peut-il être vrai que j’aurai un enfant, âgée comme je suis? »14Y a-t-il quoi que ce soit de trop extraordinaire pour l’Eternel[5]? L’an prochain, à l’époque où je repasserai chez toi, Sara aura un fils. (Lc 1:37)15Saisie de crainte, Sara mentit: Je n’ai pas ri, dit-elle. – Si! tu as bel et bien ri, répliqua l’Eternel.16Puis ces hommes se remirent en route en prenant la direction de Sodome[6]. Abraham les accompagna pour prendre congé d’eux.17L’Eternel se dit alors: Cacherai-je à Abraham ce que je vais faire?18Il deviendra l’ancêtre d’un peuple grand et puissant et une source de bénédictions pour tous les peuples de la terre.19Car je l’ai choisi pour qu’il prescrive à ses descendants et à tous les siens après lui de faire la volonté de l’Eternel, en faisant ce qui est juste et droit; ainsi j’accomplirai les promesses que je lui ai faites.
Abraham prie pour Sodome
20Alors l’Eternel dit à Abraham: De graves accusations contre Sodome et Gomorrhe sont montées jusqu’à moi: leur perversité est énorme.21Je veux y descendre pour voir si leur conduite est vraiment conforme à ce que j’entends dire. Et si ce n’est pas le cas, je le saurai.22Là-dessus, ces hommes partirent en direction de Sodome, tandis qu’Abraham continuait à se tenir en présence de l’Eternel[7].23Il s’approcha et dit: Vas-tu vraiment faire périr le juste avec le coupable?24Peut-être y a-t-il cinquante justes dans la ville; vas-tu aussi les faire périr? Ne pardonneras-tu pas à la ville à cause de ces cinquante justes qui sont au milieu d’elle?25Tu ne peux pas faire cela! Tu ne peux pas traiter de la même manière le juste et le coupable et faire mourir le juste avec le méchant! Toi qui juges la terre entière, n’agirais-tu pas selon le droit?26L’Eternel lui répondit: Si je trouve à Sodome cinquante justes, je pardonnerai à toute la ville à cause d’eux.27Abraham reprit: Je ne suis que poussière et cendre, et pourtant j’ai osé parler à mon Seigneur.28Peut-être que des cinquante justes, il en manquera cinq. A cause de ces cinq hommes en moins, vas-tu détruire toute la ville? Dieu répondit: Non, je ne la détruirai pas si j’y trouve quarante-cinq justes.29Abraham reprit à nouveau la parole et dit: Peut-être ne s’y trouvera-t-il que quarante justes? Et Dieu dit: A cause de ces quarante, je ne la détruirai pas.30Abraham poursuivit: Que mon Seigneur ne se fâche pas si j’insiste. Peut-être n’y aura-t-il que trente justes? Et Dieu dit: Si j’en trouve trente, je ne détruirai pas la ville.31Abraham reprit: Voilà que j’ai osé parler à mon Seigneur. Mais peut-être s’en trouvera-t-il seulement vingt. Et Dieu répondit: A cause de ces vingt, je ne détruirai pas la ville.32Abraham dit: Que mon Seigneur ne se mette pas en colère, et je parlerai une dernière fois. Peut-être ne s’y trouvera-t-il que dix justes. Et Dieu dit: A cause de ces dix, je ne détruirai pas Sodome.33Quand il eut fini de s’entretenir avec Abraham, l’Eternel s’en alla et Abraham retourna chez lui.

When he saw them, he ran from the tent door to meet them and bowed himself to the earth (Gn 19:1; He 13:2)3and said, “O Lord,[2] if I have found favor in your sight, do not pass by your servant.4Let a little water be brought, and wash your feet, and rest yourselves under the tree, (Gn 19:2; Gn 24:32; Gn 43:24; Lc 7:44; Jn 13:14)5while I bring a morsel of bread, that you may refresh yourselves, and after that you may pass on—since you have come to your servant.” So they said, “Do as you have said.” (Gn 19:8; Gn 33:10; Jg 19:5; Ps 104:15)6And Abraham went quickly into the tent to Sarah and said, “Quick! Three seahs[3] of fine flour! Knead it, and make cakes.”7And Abraham ran to the herd and took a calf, tender and good, and gave it to a young man, who prepared it quickly.8Then he took curds and milk and the calf that he had prepared, and set it before them. He said, “No, but you did laugh.”16Then the men set out from there, and they looked down toward Sodom. And Abraham went with them to set them on their way.17The Lord said, “Shall I hide from Abraham what I am about to do, (Ps 25:14; Am 3:7; Jn 15:15)18seeing that Abraham shall surely become a great and mighty nation, and all the nations of the earth shall be blessed in him? (Gn 12:3; Gn 22:18; Gn 26:4; Ac 3:25; Ga 3:8)19For I have chosen[6] him, that he may command his children and his household after him to keep the way of the Lord by doing righteousness and justice, so that the Lord may bring to Abraham what he has promised him.” (Am 3:2)20Then the Lord said, “Because the outcry against Sodom and Gomorrah is great and their sin is very grave, (Gn 4:10; Gn 19:13; Is 3:9; Ez 16:49; Jc 5:4)21I will go down to see whether they have done altogether[7] according to the outcry that has come to me. Abraham Intercedes for Sodom
22So the men turned from there and went toward Sodom, but Abraham still stood before the Lord. (Gn 18:1; Gn 18:16; Gn 19:1; Ps 106:23; Jr 18:20)23Then Abraham drew near and said, “Will you indeed sweep away the righteous with the wicked? (Gn 20:4; Nb 16:22; 2S 24:17)24Suppose there are fifty righteous within the city. Will you then sweep away the place and not spare it for the fifty righteous who are in it?25Far be it from you to do such a thing, to put the righteous to death with the wicked, so that the righteous fare as the wicked! Far be that from you! Shall not the Judge of all the earth do what is just?” (Dt 32:4; Jb 8:3; Jb 8:20; Jb 34:10; Rm 3:5)26And the Lord said, “If I find at Sodom fifty righteous in the city, I will spare the whole place for their sake.” (Is 65:8; Jr 5:1; Ez 22:30)27Abraham answered and said, “Behold, I have undertaken to speak to the Lord, I who am but dust and ashes. (Lc 18:1)28Suppose five of the fifty righteous are lacking. Will you destroy the whole city for lack of five?” And he said, “I will not destroy it if I find forty-five there.”29Again he spoke to him and said, “Suppose forty are found there.” He answered, “For the sake of forty I will not do it.”30Then he said, “Oh let not the Lord be angry, and I will speak. Suppose thirty are found there.” He answered, “I will not do it, if I find thirty there.”31He said, “Behold, I have undertaken to speak to the Lord. Suppose twenty are found there.” He answered, “For the sake of twenty I will not destroy it.”32Then he said, “Oh let not the Lord be angry, and I will speak again but this once. Suppose ten are found there.” He answered, “For the sake of ten I will not destroy it.” (Jg 6:39)33And the Lord went his way, when he had finished speaking to Abraham, and Abraham returned to his place.

Knete es und backe Brotfladen!7Er lief weiter zum Vieh, nahm ein zartes, prächtiges Kalb und übergab es dem Knecht, der es schnell zubereitete.8Dann nahm Abraham Butter, Milch und das Kalb, das er hatte zubereiten lassen, und setzte es ihnen vor. Er selbst wartete ihnen unter dem Baum auf, während sie aßen. (He 13:2)9Sie fragten ihn: Wo ist deine Frau Sara? Dort im Zelt, sagte er.10Da sprach er: In einem Jahr komme ich wieder zu dir. Siehe, dann wird deine Frau Sara einen Sohn haben. Sara hörte am Eingang des Zeltes hinter seinem Rücken zu. (Gn 17:15; Gn 21:1)11Abraham und Sara waren schon alt; sie waren hochbetagt. Sara erging es nicht mehr, wie es Frauen zu ergehen pflegt.12Sara lachte daher still in sich hinein und dachte: Ich bin doch schon alt und verbraucht und soll noch Liebeslust erfahren? Auch ist mein Herr doch schon ein alter Mann!13Da sprach der HERR zu Abraham: Warum lacht Sara und sagt: Sollte ich wirklich noch gebären, obwohl ich so alt bin?14Ist denn beim HERRN etwas unmöglich? Nächstes Jahr um diese Zeit werde ich wieder zu dir kommen; dann wird Sara einen Sohn haben.15Sara leugnete: Ich habe nicht gelacht. Denn sie hatte Angst. Er aber sagte: Doch, du hast gelacht.
Abrahams Fürsprache für Sodom
16Die Männer erhoben sich von dort und schauten auf Sodom hinab. Abraham ging mit ihnen, um sie zu geleiten.17Da sagte der HERR: Soll ich Abraham verheimlichen, was ich tun will?18Abraham soll doch zu einem großen, mächtigen Volk werden, durch ihn sollen alle Völker der Erde Segen erlangen. (Gn 12:2; Gn 22:17; Gn 26:4; Gn 28:14; Ga 3:8)19Denn ich habe ihn dazu ausersehen, dass er seinen Söhnen und seinem Haus nach ihm gebietet, den Weg des HERRN einzuhalten und Gerechtigkeit und Recht zu üben, damit der HERR seine Zusagen an Abraham erfüllen kann.20Der HERR sprach: Das Klagegeschrei über Sodom und Gomorra, ja, das ist angeschwollen und ihre Sünde, ja, die ist schwer. (Gn 13:13)21Ich will hinabsteigen und sehen, ob ihr verderbliches Tun wirklich dem Klagegeschrei entspricht, das zu mir gedrungen ist, oder nicht. Ich will es wissen.22Die Männer wandten sich ab von dort und gingen auf Sodom zu. Abraham aber stand noch immer vor dem HERRN.23Abraham trat näher und sagte: Willst du auch den Gerechten mit den Ruchlosen wegraffen?24Vielleicht gibt es fünfzig Gerechte in der Stadt: Willst du auch sie wegraffen und nicht doch dem Ort vergeben wegen der fünfzig Gerechten in ihrer Mitte?25Fern sei es von dir, so etwas zu tun: den Gerechten zusammen mit dem Frevler töten. Dann ginge es ja dem Gerechten wie dem Frevler. Das sei fern von dir. Sollte der Richter der ganzen Erde nicht Recht üben? (Jb 8:3)26Da sprach der HERR: Wenn ich in Sodom fünfzig Gerechte in der Stadt finde, werde ich ihretwegen dem ganzen Ort vergeben.27Abraham antwortete und sprach: Siehe, ich habe es unternommen, mit meinem Herrn zu reden, obwohl ich Staub und Asche bin.28Vielleicht fehlen an den fünfzig Gerechten fünf. Wirst du wegen der fünf die ganze Stadt vernichten? Nein, sagte er, ich werde sie nicht vernichten, wenn ich dort fünfundvierzig finde.29Er fuhr fort, zu ihm zu reden: Vielleicht finden sich dort nur vierzig. Da sprach er: Ich werde es der vierzig wegen nicht tun.30Da sagte er: Mein Herr zürne nicht, wenn ich weiterrede. Vielleicht finden sich dort nur dreißig. Er entgegnete: Ich werde es nicht tun, wenn ich dort dreißig finde.31Darauf sagte er: Siehe, ich habe es unternommen, mit meinem Herrn zu reden. Vielleicht finden sich dort nur zwanzig. Er antwortete: Ich werde sie nicht vernichten um der zwanzig willen.32Und nochmals sagte er: Mein Herr zürne nicht, wenn ich nur noch einmal das Wort ergreife. Vielleicht finden sich dort nur zehn. Er sprach: Ich werde sie nicht vernichten um der zehn willen.33Der HERR ging fort, als er aufgehört hatte, zu Abraham zu reden, und Abraham kehrte an seinen Ort zurück.
