David épargne et confond Saül

1 David repartit de là pour s’installer dans les falaises escarpées d’Eyn-Guédi^[1]. (Ct 1:14) 2 Lorsque Saül revint de sa campagne contre les Philistins, on l’informa que David se trouvait maintenant dans le désert d’Eyn-Guédi. 3 Alors le roi rassembla trois « milliers » d’hommes d’élite, choisis dans tout Israël, et il se mit à la recherche de David et de ses compagnons jusqu’en face du Rocher des Bouquetins. 4 En passant près des parcs à moutons en bordure du chemin, il vit une grotte^[2] et y entra pour satisfaire un besoin naturel. Or David et ses hommes se tenaient précisément au fond de cette grotte. (Ps 57:1; Ps 142:1) 5 Les compagnons de David lui chuchotèrent: Voici le moment annoncé par l’Eternel lorsqu’il t’a promis de te livrer ton ennemi pour que tu le traites comme bon te semble. Alors David se leva et alla couper un pan du manteau de Saül sans que celui-ci s’en aperçoive. 6 Dès qu’il l’eut fait, son cœur se mit à battre très fort parce qu’il avait coupé un pan du manteau de Saül. 7 Il dit à ses hommes: Que l’Eternel me garde de jamais faire une chose pareille et de porter la main sur mon seigneur à qui Dieu a conféré l’onction, car c’est de la part de l’Eternel qu’il a été oint. 8 Par ces paroles, David arrêta ses hommes; il ne les laissa pas se jeter sur Saül. Le roi sortit de la grotte et continua son chemin. 9 Alors David sortit de la grotte derrière lui et appela Saül: Mon seigneur le roi! Saül se retourna et David s’inclina respectueusement, le visage contre terre, et se prosterna. 10 Puis il dit à Saül: Pourquoi écoutes-tu ceux qui te disent que je cherche à te nuire? 11 Aujourd’hui même, tu vois de tes yeux que l’Eternel t’avait livré en mon pouvoir dans la grotte. On me disait de te tuer, mais je t’ai épargné et j’ai dit: « Je ne porterai pas la main sur mon seigneur, car il a reçu l’onction de la part de l’Eternel. » 12 Regarde, ô mon père^[3], oui, regarde ce que je tiens dans ma main: un pan de ton manteau. Puisque j’ai coupé le pan de ton manteau et que je ne t’ai pas tué, reconnais donc qu’il n’y a de ma part ni malveillance ni révolte, et que je n’ai aucun tort envers toi. Alors que toi, tu me traques pour m’ôter la vie. (1S 18:27) 13 Que l’Eternel juge entre moi et toi et qu’il te fasse payer le mal que tu m’as fait, mais moi je ne porterai pas la main sur toi. 14 Comme le dit le vieux proverbe: « Du méchant vient la méchanceté »! Mais je ne porterai pas la main sur toi. 15 Contre qui le roi d’Israël est-il parti en guerre? Qui poursuis-tu? Un chien mort! Une misérable puce! 16 Oui, l’Eternel sera notre juge et prononcera son verdict entre moi et toi! Qu’il examine et qu’il défende ma cause! Qu’il me fasse justice et me délivre de toi! 17 Quand David eut fini de parler ainsi à Saül, celui-ci lui dit: Est-ce bien toi qui me parles, mon fils David? Et il se mit à pleurer à chaudes larmes. 18 Puis il lui dit: Tu es plus juste que moi, tu m’as traité avec bonté, alors que moi je t’ai fait du mal. 19 Tu viens de montrer aujourd’hui que tu agis avec bonté envers moi, puisque l’Eternel m’avait livré en ton pouvoir et que tu ne m’as pas tué. 20 Si quelqu’un surprend son ennemi, le laisse-t-il avec bienveillance poursuivre sa route? Que l’Eternel te récompense pour ce que tu as fait pour moi en ce jour! 21 Maintenant, tu vois, je sais que tu seras certainement roi un jour et que le royaume d’Israël sera stable sous ton autorité. 22 A présent, jure-moi seulement par l’Eternel que tu n’extermineras pas mes descendants après ma mort et que tu ne chercheras pas à faire disparaître mon nom de mon groupe familial. 23 Alors David le promit par serment à Saül, qui retourna chez lui, tandis que David et ses compagnons regagnèrent leur refuge dans la montagne.

David Spares Saul’s Life

1 ^[1] When Saul returned from following the Philistines, he was told, “Behold, David is in the wilderness of Engedi.” (1S 23:28) 2 Then Saul took three thousand chosen men out of all Israel and went to seek David and his men in front of the Wildgoats’ Rocks. (1S 26:2) 3 And he came to the sheepfolds by the way, where there was a cave, and Saul went in to relieve himself.^[2] Now David and his men were sitting in the innermost parts of the cave. (Jg 3:24; Ps 57:1; Ps 142:1) 4 And the men of David said to him, “Here is the day of which the LORD said to you, ‘Behold, I will give your enemy into your hand, and you shall do to him as it shall seem good to you.’” Then David arose and stealthily cut off a corner of Saul’s robe. (1S 24:7; 1S 26:8) 5 And afterward David’s heart struck him, because he had cut off a corner of Saul’s robe. (2S 24:10) 6 He said to his men, “The LORD forbid that I should do this thing to my lord, the LORD’s anointed, to put out my hand against him, seeing he is the LORD’s anointed.” (1S 12:3; 1S 26:11) 7 So David persuaded his men with these words and did not permit them to attack Saul. And Saul rose up and left the cave and went on his way. (Ps 7:4) 8 Afterward David also arose and went out of the cave, and called after Saul, “My lord the king!” And when Saul looked behind him, David bowed with his face to the earth and paid homage. 9 And David said to Saul, “Why do you listen to the words of men who say, ‘Behold, David seeks your harm’? 10 Behold, this day your eyes have seen how the LORD gave you today into my hand in the cave. And some told me to kill you, but I spared you.^[3] I said, ‘I will not put out my hand against my lord, for he is the LORD’s anointed.’ (1S 6:1; 1S 24:4) 11 See, my father, see the corner of your robe in my hand. For by the fact that I cut off the corner of your robe and did not kill you, you may know and see that there is no wrong or treason in my hands. I have not sinned against you, though you hunt my life to take it. After whom do you pursue? After a dead dog! After a flea! 16 As soon as David had finished speaking these words to Saul, Saul said, “Is this your voice, my son David?” And Saul lifted up his voice and wept. (1S 26:17) 17 He said to David, “You are more righteous than I, for you have repaid me good, whereas I have repaid you evil. (1S 26:21) 18 And you have declared this day how you have dealt well with me, in that you did not kill me when the LORD put me into your hands. 19 For if a man finds his enemy, will he let him go away safe? So may the LORD reward you with good for what you have done to me this day. 20 And now, behold, I know that you shall surely be king, and that the kingdom of Israel shall be established in your hand. 1 Von dort zog David hinauf und setzte sich in den schwer zugänglichen Bergen bei En-Gedi fest. 2 Als Saul von der Verfolgung der Philister zurückkehrte, berichtete man ihm: Gib Acht, David ist in der Steppe von En-Gedi. 3 Da nahm Saul dreitausend Mann, ausgesuchte Leute aus ganz Israel, und zog aus, um David und seine Männer bei den Steinbock-Felsen zu suchen. 4 Auf seinem Weg kam er zu einigen Schafhürden. Dort war eine Höhle. Saul ging hinein, um seine Notdurft zu verrichten. David aber und seine Männer saßen hinten in der Höhle. 5 Da sagten die Männer zu David: Das ist der Tag, von dem der HERR zu dir gesagt hat: Sieh her, ich gebe deinen Feind in deine Hand und du kannst mit ihm machen, was dir richtig erscheint. Da stand David auf und schnitt heimlich einen Zipfel von Sauls Mantel ab. (Jg 4:14; 1S 26:8) 6 Hinterher aber schlug David das Gewissen, weil er einen Zipfel vom Mantel Sauls abgeschnitten hatte. (2S 24:10) 7 Er sagte zu seinen Männern: Der HERR bewahre mich davor, meinem Gebieter, dem Gesalbten des HERRN, so etwas anzutun und Hand an ihn zu legen; denn er ist der Gesalbte des HERRN. (1S 26:9; 2S 1:14; Mt 5:44) 8 Und David fuhr seine Leute mit scharfen Worten an und ließ nicht zu, dass sie sich an Saul vergriffen. Als Saul die Höhle verlassen hatte und seinen Weg fortsetzte, 9 stand auch David auf, verließ die Höhle und rief Saul nach: Mein Herr und König! Als Saul sich umblickte, verneigte sich David bis zur Erde und warf sich nieder. 10 Dann sagte David zu Saul: Warum hörst du auf die Worte von Leuten, die sagen: Gib Acht, David will dein Verderben. 11 Doch heute kannst du mit eigenen Augen sehen, dass der HERR dich heute in der Höhle in meine Hand gegeben hat. Man hat mir gesagt, ich solle dich töten; aber ich habe dich geschont. Ich sagte: Ich will nicht die Hand an meinen Herrn legen; denn er ist der Gesalbte des HERRN. (Rm 12:14) 12 Sieh her, mein Vater! Hier, der Zipfel deines Mantels ist in meiner Hand. Wenn ich einen Zipfel deines Mantels abgeschnitten und dich nicht getötet habe, dann kannst du erkennen und einsehen, dass ich weder Bosheit noch Aufruhr im Sinn habe und dass ich mich nicht gegen dich versündigt habe; du aber stellst mir nach, um mir das Leben zu nehmen. 13 Der HERR soll zwischen mir und dir entscheiden. Der HERR soll mich an dir rächen; aber meine Hand wird dich nicht anrühren, (Jg 11:27) 14 wie das alte Sprichwort sagt: Von den Frevlern geht Frevel aus; aber meine Hand soll dich nicht anrühren. 15 Hinter wem zieht der König von Israel her? Wem jagst du nach? Einem toten Hund, einem einzigen Floh! (1S 26:20) 16 Der HERR soll unser Richter sein und zwischen mir und dir entscheiden. Er blicke her, er soll meinen Rechtsstreit führen und mir dir gegenüber Recht verschaffen. (Gn 31:53; Ps 43:1) 17 Als David das zu Saul gesagt hatte, antwortete Saul: Ist das nicht deine Stimme, mein Sohn David? Und Saul begann laut zu weinen 18 und sagte zu David: Du bist gerechter als ich; denn du hast mir Gutes erwiesen, während ich böse an dir gehandelt habe. (Gn 38:26; 1P 3:9) 19 Du hast heute bewiesen, dass du gut an mir gehandelt hast; obwohl der HERR mich in deine Hand gegeben hatte, hast du mich nicht getötet. (1S 26:23) 20 Wenn jemand auf seinen Feind trifft, lässt er ihn dann im Guten seinen Weg weiterziehen? Der HERR möge dir mit Gutem vergelten, was du mir heute getan hast! 21 Jetzt weiß ich, dass du König werden wirst und dass das Königtum in deiner Hand Bestand haben wird. (1S 23:17) 22 Darum schwöre mir nun beim HERRN, dass du meine Nachkommen nicht ausrotten und meinen Namen nicht aus dem Haus meines Vaters austilgen wirst!
