48 And he saw that they were making headway painfully, for the wind was against them. And about the fourth watch of the night[1] he came to them, walking on the sea. He meant to pass by them, (Mr 6:47; Lu 24:28)

48 He saw the disciples straining at the oars, because the wind was against them. Shortly before dawn he went out to them, walking on the lake. He was about to pass by them,

48 He saw the disciples pulling hard on the oars. The wind was blowing against them. Shortly before dawn, he went out to them. He walked on the lake. When he was about to pass by them,

48 And he saw them toiling in rowing; for the wind was contrary unto them: and about the fourth watch of the night he cometh unto them, walking upon the sea, and would have passed by them.
