1 Les hommes d'Ephraïm se rassemblèrent, partirent pour le nord et dirent à Jephthé: «Pourquoi es-tu allé combattre les Ammonites sans nous avoir appelés à marcher avec toi? Nous voulons incendier ta maison et te brûler avec elle.» 2 Jephthé leur répondit: «Nous avons eu de grands sujets de querelle, mon peuple et moi, avec les Ammonites et, quand je vous ai appelés à l'aide, vous ne m'avez pas délivré d'eux. 3 Voyant que vous ne veniez pas à mon secours, j'ai risqué ma vie et j'ai marché contre les Ammonites. L'Eternel les a livrés entre mes mains. Pourquoi donc aujourd'hui montez-vous contre moi pour me faire la guerre?» 4 Jephthé rassembla tous les hommes de Galaad et livra bataille à Ephraïm. Les Galaadites battirent Ephraïm parce que les Ephraïmites disaient: «Vous n'êtes que des fuyards d'Ephraïm! Galaad fait partie d'Ephraïm et est passé à Manassé!» 5 Galaad s'empara des gués du Jourdain du côté d'Ephraïm. Quand l'un des fuyards d'Ephraïm disait: «Laissez-moi passer!» les hommes de Galaad lui demandaient: «Es-tu éphraïmite?» Il répondait: «Non.» 6 Ils lui disaient alors: «Eh bien, dis ‘Shibboleth’» et il disait «Sibboleth», car il ne pouvait pas bien prononcer. Sur quoi les hommes de Galaad s'emparaient de lui et l'égorgeaient près des gués du Jourdain. Il y eut 42'000 hommes d'Ephraïm qui furent tués à cette occasion-là. 7 Jephthé fut juge en Israël pendant 6 ans. Puis Jephthé le Galaadite mourut, et il fut enterré dans l'une des villes de Galaad.

Ibtsan, Elon et Abdon juges en Israël

8 Après lui, Ibtsan de Bethléhem fut juge en Israël. 9 Il eut 30 fils, il maria 30 filles à l'extérieur de sa tribu et il fit venir pour ses fils 30 filles d'autres tribus. Il fut juge en Israël pendant 7 ans. 10 Puis Ibtsan mourut, et il fut enterré à Bethléhem. 11 Après lui, Elon de Zabulon fut juge en Israël. Il fut juge en Israël pendant 10 ans. 12 Puis Elon de Zabulon mourut, et il fut enterré à Ajalon, dans le pays de Zabulon. 13 Après lui, Abdon, fils d'Hillel, le Pirathonite, fut juge en Israël. 14 Il eut 40 fils et 30 petits-fils, qui montaient sur 70 ânons. Il fut juge en Israël pendant 8 ans. 15 Puis Abdon, fils d'Hillel, le Pirathonite, mourut, et il fut enterré à Pirathon, dans le pays d'Ephraïm, sur la montagne des Amalécites.

Jephthah and Ephraim

1 The Ephraimite forces were called out, and they crossed over to Zaphon. They said to Jephthah, ‘Why did you go to fight the Ammonites without calling us to go with you? We’re going to burn down your house over your head.’ 2 Jephthah answered, ‘I and my people were engaged in a great struggle with the Ammonites, and although I called, you didn’t save me out of their hands. 3 When I saw that you wouldn’t help, I took my life in my hands and crossed over to fight the Ammonites, and the Lord gave me the victory over them. Now why have you come up today to fight me?’ 4 Jephthah then called together the men of Gilead and fought against Ephraim. The Gileadites struck them down because the Ephraimites had said, ‘You Gileadites are renegades from Ephraim and Manasseh.’ 5 The Gileadites captured the fords of the Jordan leading to Ephraim, and whenever a survivor of Ephraim said, ‘Let me cross over,’ the men of Gilead asked him, ‘Are you an Ephraimite?’ If he replied, ‘No,’ 6 they said, ‘All right, say “Shibboleth”.’ If he said, ‘Sibboleth’, because he could not pronounce the word correctly, they seized him and killed him at the fords of the Jordan. Forty-two thousand Ephraimites were killed at that time. 7 Jephthah led* Israel for six years. Then Jephthah the Gileadite died and was buried in a town in Gilead.

Ibzan, Elon and Abdon

8 After him, Ibzan of Bethlehem led Israel. 9 He had thirty sons and thirty daughters. He gave his daughters away in marriage to those outside his clan, and for his sons he brought in thirty young women as wives from outside his clan. Ibzan led Israel for seven years. 10 Then Ibzan died and was buried in Bethlehem. 11 After him, Elon the Zebulunite led Israel for ten years. 12 Then Elon died and was buried in Aijalon in the land of Zebulun. 13 After him, Abdon son of Hillel, from Pirathon, led Israel. 14 He had forty sons and thirty grandsons, who rode on seventy donkeys. He led Israel for eight years. 15 Then Abdon son of Hillel died and was buried at Pirathon in Ephraim, in the hill country of the Amalekites.
