1A cette époque-là, le roi Hérode se mit à maltraiter des membres de l'Eglise,2et il fit mourir par l'épée Jacques, le frère de Jean.3Quand il vit que cela plaisait aux Juifs, il fit encore arrêter Pierre. – C'était pendant la fête des pains sans levain. –4Après l'avoir fait arrêter et jeter en prison, il le mit sous la garde de quatre escouades de quatre soldats chacune; il avait l'intention de le faire comparaître devant le peuple après la Pâque.5Pierre était donc gardé dans la prison et l'Eglise adressait d'ardentes prières à Dieu pour lui.6La nuit qui précédait le jour où Hérode allait le faire comparaître, Pierre, attaché avec deux chaînes, dormait entre deux soldats; des sentinelles postées devant la porte gardaient la prison.7Soudain, un ange du Seigneur survint et une lumière resplendit dans la cellule. L'ange réveilla Pierre en le frappant au côté et lui dit: «Lève-toi vite!» Les chaînes tombèrent de ses mains.8Puis l'ange lui dit: «Mets ta ceinture et tes sandales.» C'est ce qu'il fit. L'ange lui dit encore: «Mets ton manteau et suis-moi.»9Pierre sortit et le suivit, sans savoir que ce que l'ange faisait était réel: il croyait avoir une vision.10Ils passèrent la première garde, puis la seconde, et ils arrivèrent à la porte de fer qui mène à la ville. La porte s'ouvrit d'elle-même devant eux; ils sortirent et s'avancèrent dans une rue. Aussitôt l'ange quitta Pierre.11Revenu à lui-même, Pierre dit: «Maintenant, je sais vraiment que le Seigneur a envoyé son ange et qu'il m'a délivré du pouvoir d'Hérode et de tout ce que le peuple juif attendait.»12Après avoir réfléchi, il se dirigea vers la maison de Marie, la mère de Jean, surnommé Marc, où beaucoup de personnes étaient réunies et priaient.13Il frappa à la porte d'entrée et une servante appelée Rhode s'approcha pour écouter.14Elle reconnut la voix de Pierre et, dans sa joie, au lieu d'ouvrir, elle courut annoncer que Pierre se tenait devant la porte.15Ils lui dirent: «Tu es folle», mais elle soutenait que c'était bien vrai. Ils dirent alors: «C'est son ange.»16Cependant Pierre continuait à frapper. Ils ouvrirent et furent stupéfaits de le voir.17De la main, il leur fit signe de se taire et il [leur] raconta comment le Seigneur l'avait tiré de la prison. Il ajouta: «Annoncez-le à Jacques et aux frères et sœurs.» Puis il sortit et s'en alla dans un autre endroit.18Quand il fit jour, il y eut une grande agitation parmi les soldats: qu'était donc devenu Pierre?19Hérode le fit rechercher, mais on ne le trouva pas. Il interrogea les gardes et donna l'ordre de les faire exécuter. Ensuite il quitta la Judée et descendit à Césarée pour y séjourner.20Hérode était en conflit avec les Tyriens et les Sidoniens. Mais ils vinrent le trouver d'un commun accord et, après avoir gagné Blastus, le responsable de sa chambre, ils demandèrent la paix parce que leur région dépendait de celle du roi pour son ravitaillement.21Le jour fixé, Hérode, habillé de sa tenue royale, était assis sur son trône et leur adressait publiquement un discours.22Le peuple s'écria: «C'est la voix d'un dieu et non d'un être humain!»23Un ange du Seigneur le frappa immédiatement parce qu'il n'avait pas donné gloire à Dieu. Il mourut rongé par des vers.24Quant à la parole de Dieu, elle se propageait de plus en plus.25Une fois leur mission à Jérusalem accomplie, Barnabas et Saul repartirent, emmenant avec eux Jean, surnommé Marc.

Peter’s miraculous escape from prison
1It was about this time that King Herod arrested some who belonged to the church, intending to persecute them.2He had James, the brother of John, put to death with the sword.3When he saw that this met with approval among the Jews, he proceeded to seize Peter also. This happened during the Festival of Unleavened Bread.4After arresting him, he put him in prison, handing him over to be guarded by four squads of four soldiers each. Herod intended to bring him out for public trial after the Passover.5So Peter was kept in prison, but the church was earnestly praying to God for him.6The night before Herod was to bring him to trial, Peter was sleeping between two soldiers, bound with two chains, and sentries stood guard at the entrance.7Suddenly an angel of the Lord appeared and a light shone in the cell. He struck Peter on the side and woke him up. ‘Quick, get up!’ he said, and the chains fell off Peter’s wrists.8Then the angel said to him, ‘Put on your clothes and sandals.’ And Peter did so. ‘Wrap your cloak round you and follow me,’ the angel told him.9Peter followed him out of the prison, but he had no idea that what the angel was doing was really happening; he thought he was seeing a vision.10They passed the first and second guards and came to the iron gate leading to the city. It opened for them by itself, and they went through it. When they had walked the length of one street, suddenly the angel left him.11Then Peter came to himself and said, ‘Now I know without a doubt that the Lord has sent his angel and rescued me from Herod’s clutches and from everything the Jewish people were hoping would happen.’12When this had dawned on him, he went to the house of Mary the mother of John, also called Mark, where many people had gathered and were praying.13Peter knocked at the outer entrance, and a servant named Rhoda came to answer the door.14When she recognised Peter’s voice, she was so overjoyed she ran back without opening it and exclaimed, ‘Peter is at the door!’15‘You’re out of your mind,’ they told her. When she kept insisting that it was so, they said, ‘It must be his angel.’16But Peter kept on knocking, and when they opened the door and saw him, they were astonished.17Peter motioned with his hand for them to be quiet and described how the Lord had brought him out of prison. ‘Tell James and the other brothers and sisters about this,’ he said, and then he left for another place.18In the morning, there was no small commotion among the soldiers as to what had become of Peter.
Herod’s death
19After Herod had a thorough search made for him and did not find him, he cross-examined the guards and ordered that they be executed. Then Herod went from Judea to Caesarea and stayed there.20He had been quarrelling with the people of Tyre and Sidon; they now joined together and sought an audience with him. After securing the support of Blastus, a trusted personal servant of the king, they asked for peace, because they depended on the king’s country for their food supply.21On the appointed day Herod, wearing his royal robes, sat on his throne and delivered a public address to the people.22They shouted, ‘This is the voice of a god, not of a man.’23Immediately, because Herod did not give praise to God, an angel of the Lord struck him down, and he was eaten by worms and died.24But the word of God continued to spread and flourish.
Barnabas and Saul sent off
25When Barnabas and Saul had finished their mission, they returned from* Jerusalem, taking with them John, also called Mark.
