1Les apôtres et les frères qui étaient en Judée apprirent que les non-Juifs avaient eux aussi fait bon accueil à la parole de Dieu.2Et lorsque Pierre monta à Jérusalem, ceux qui étaient circoncis lui adressèrent des reproches3en disant: «Tu es entré chez des incirconcis et tu as mangé avec eux!»4Pierre se mit à leur exposer dans l'ordre tout ce qui s'était passé. Il dit:5«J'étais dans la ville de Jaffa et, pendant que je priais, j'ai eu en extase une vision: un objet qui ressemblait à une grande nappe attachée aux quatre coins descendait du ciel et venait jusqu'à moi.6Je l'ai examiné attentivement et j'ai vu les quadrupèdes de la terre, les bêtes sauvages et les reptiles ainsi que les oiseaux du ciel.7Puis j'ai entendu une voix qui me disait: ‘Lève-toi, Pierre, tue et mange!’8Mais j'ai dit: ‘Certainement pas, Seigneur, car jamais rien de souillé ni d'impur n'est entré dans ma bouche.’9Pour la deuxième fois la voix s'est fait entendre du ciel: ‘Ce que Dieu a déclaré pur, toi, ne le considère pas comme impur.’10Cela est arrivé trois fois, puis tout a été retiré dans le ciel.11Et voilà qu'à l'instant même, trois hommes envoyés de Césarée vers moi sont arrivés à la maison où j'étais.12L'Esprit m'a dit de partir avec eux sans hésiter. Les six frères que voici m'ont accompagné et nous sommes entrés dans la maison de Corneille.13Cet homme nous a raconté comment il avait vu l'ange se présenter à lui dans sa maison et [lui] dire: ‘Envoie quelqu'un à Jaffa et fais venir Simon, surnommé Pierre;14il te dira un message par lequel tu seras sauvé, toi et toute ta famille.’15Lorsque j'ai commencé à parler, le Saint-Esprit est descendu sur eux, comme sur nous au début.16Et je me suis souvenu de cette parole du Seigneur: ‘Jean a baptisé d'eau, mais vous, vous serez baptisés du Saint-Esprit.’17Puisque Dieu leur a accordé le même don qu'à nous qui avons cru au Seigneur Jésus-Christ, qui étais-je, moi, pour m'opposer à Dieu?»18Après avoir entendu cela, ils se calmèrent et se mirent à célébrer la gloire de Dieu en disant: «Dieu a donc aussi accordé aux non-Juifs la possibilité de changer d'attitude afin d'avoir la vie.»

19Ceux qui avaient été dispersés lors de la persécution survenue après la mort d'Etienne allèrent jusqu'en Phénicie, dans l'île de Chypre et à Antioche; mais ils n'annonçaient la parole qu'aux Juifs.20Cependant, certains d'entre eux, qui étaient originaires de Chypre et de Cyrène, vinrent à Antioche et s'adressèrent [aussi] aux non-Juifs pour leur annoncer la bonne nouvelle du Seigneur Jésus.21La main du Seigneur était avec eux et un grand nombre de personnes crurent et se tournèrent vers le Seigneur.22La nouvelle en parvint aux oreilles des membres de l'Eglise de Jérusalem et ils envoyèrent Barnabas jusqu'à Antioche.23A son arrivée, lorsqu'il vit la grâce de Dieu, il en éprouva de la joie. Il les encourageait tous à rester attachés au Seigneur d'un cœur ferme,24car c'était un homme de bien, plein d'Esprit saint et de foi. Une foule assez nombreuse s'attacha au Seigneur.25Barnabas se rendit ensuite à Tarse pour aller chercher Saul.26Quand il l'eut trouvé, il l'amena à Antioche. Pendant toute une année, ils participèrent aux réunions de l'Eglise et ils enseignèrent beaucoup de personnes. C'est à Antioche que, pour la première fois, les disciples furent appelés chrétiens.27A cette époque-là, des prophètes descendirent de Jérusalem à Antioche.28L'un d'eux, du nom d'Agabus, se leva et annonça par l'Esprit qu'il y aurait une grande famine sur toute la terre. Elle arriva, en effet, sous l'empereur Claude.29Les disciples décidèrent d'envoyer, chacun selon ses moyens, un secours aux frères et sœurs qui habitaient la Judée.30C'est ce qu'ils firent en l'envoyant aux anciens par l'intermédiaire de Barnabas et de Saul.

Peter explains his actions
1The apostles and the believers throughout Judea heard that the Gentiles also had received the word of God.2So when Peter went up to Jerusalem, the circumcised believers criticised him3and said, ‘You went into the house of uncircumcised men and ate with them.’4Starting from the beginning, Peter told them the whole story:5‘I was in the city of Joppa praying, and in a trance I saw a vision. I saw something like a large sheet being let down from heaven by its four corners, and it came down to where I was.6I looked into it and saw four-footed animals of the earth, wild beasts, reptiles and birds.7Then I heard a voice telling me, “Get up, Peter. Kill and eat.”8‘I replied, “Surely not, Lord! Nothing impure or unclean has ever entered my mouth.”9‘The voice spoke from heaven a second time, “Do not call anything impure that God has made clean.”10This happened three times, and then it was all pulled up to heaven again.11‘Right then three men who had been sent to me from Caesarea stopped at the house where I was staying.12The Spirit told me to have no hesitation about going with them. These six brothers also went with me, and we entered the man’s house.13He told us how he had seen an angel appear in his house and say, “Send to Joppa for Simon who is called Peter.14He will bring you a message through which you and all your household will be saved.”15‘As I began to speak, the Holy Spirit came on them as he had come on us at the beginning.16Then I remembered what the Lord had said: “John baptised with* water, but you will be baptised with* the Holy Spirit.”17So if God gave them the same gift he gave us who believed in the Lord Jesus Christ, who was I to think that I could stand in God’s way?’18When they heard this, they had no further objections and praised God, saying, ‘So then, even to Gentiles God has granted repentance that leads to life.’
The church in Antioch
19Now those who had been scattered by the persecution that broke out when Stephen was killed travelled as far as Phoenicia, Cyprus and Antioch, spreading the word only among Jews.20Some of them, however, men from Cyprus and Cyrene, went to Antioch and began to speak to Greeks also, telling them the good news about the Lord Jesus.21The Lord’s hand was with them, and a great number of people believed and turned to the Lord.22News of this reached the church in Jerusalem, and they sent Barnabas to Antioch.23When he arrived and saw what the grace of God had done, he was glad and encouraged them all to remain true to the Lord with all their hearts.24He was a good man, full of the Holy Spirit and faith, and a great number of people were brought to the Lord.25Then Barnabas went to Tarsus to look for Saul,26and when he found him, he brought him to Antioch. So for a whole year Barnabas and Saul met with the church and taught great numbers of people. The disciples were called Christians first at Antioch.27During this time some prophets came down from Jerusalem to Antioch.28One of them, named Agabus, stood up and through the Spirit predicted that a severe famine would spread over the entire Roman world. (This happened during the reign of Claudius.)29The disciples, as each one was able, decided to provide help for the brothers and sisters living in Judea.30This they did, sending their gift to the elders by Barnabas and Saul.
