«Non resterò con voi ancora per molto…»

1 Sei giorni prima di Pasqua, Gesù arrivò a Betania, dove abitava Lazzaro, lʼuomo che aveva resuscitato. 2 In onore di Gesù era stato preparato un banchetto. Marta serviva e Lazzaro sedeva a tavola vicino a Gesù. 3 Allora Maria prese un vaso di costoso profumo allʼessenza di nardo e lo versò sui piedi di Gesù, asciugandoli poi coi suoi capelli. Il profumo si sparse per tutta la casa. 4 Ma Giuda Iscariota, uno dei discepoli, quello che poi lo avrebbe tradito, disse: 5 «Quel profumo valeva un patrimonio. Si sarebbe dovuto vendere per dare il denaro ai poveri!» 6 Non che glʼimportasse dei poveri, ma, siccome era lui che teneva la cassa dei discepoli, spesso ne approfittava per uso personale! 7 Gesù rispose: «Lasciala stare. Maria lʼha fatto come preparativo per la mia sepoltura. 8 I poveri li potete sempre aiutare, mentre io non resterò con voi ancora per molto». 9 Quando la gente seppe che Gesù era a Betania, accorse a frotte, non solo per lui, ma anche per vedere Lazzaro che Gesù aveva resuscitato. 10 Allora i capi sacerdoti decisero di uccidere anche Lazzaro, 11 perché, vedendolo, molti li abbandonavano e credevano a Gesù.

La folla acclama Gesù

12 Il giorno dopo, corse voce per tutta la città che Gesù stava per arrivare a Gerusalemme. Unʼimmensa folla di pellegrini, venuti per la Pasqua, 13 prese dei rami di palma e gli andò incontro, gridando: «Evviva il Salvatore! Benedetto colui che viene nel nome del Signore, il re dʼIsraele!» 14 Gesù giunse cavalcando un asinello. Si avverava così la profezia che diceva: 15 «Non aver paura, popolo di Gerusalemme! Ecco il tuo re che viene, cavalcando un puledro dʼasina». 16 In quel momento i discepoli non capirono che così sʼavverava quella profezia, ma quando Gesù ritornò in cielo, sʼaccorsero che molte profezie delle Scritture si erano avverate proprio sotto i loro occhi! 17 Intanto, tra la folla, quelli che avevano assistito alla resurrezione di Lazzaro, lo raccontavano in giro. 18 Per questo tante persone andarono incontro a Gesù, perché avevano saputo di quel potente miracolo. 19 Allora i Farisei dissero fra loro: «Non cʼè niente da fare. Guardate: tutto il mondo gli corre dietro!» 20 Alcuni Greci, giunti a Gerusalemme per la Pasqua, 21 andarono da Filippo, che era di Betsaida, e gli dissero: «Signore, vorremmo conoscere Gesù…» 22 Filippo riferì la cosa ad Andrea, ed insieme andarono da Gesù. 23 Gesù rispose: «È giunta lʼora in cui devo essere glorificato». Poi aggiunse: «Debbo cadere e morire, come un seme di grano, gettato nei solchi di un campo. Se non muoio, resterò solo, un singolo seme. La mia morte, invece, produrrà tanti nuovi semi e darà un ricco raccolto di vite nuove. 25 Chi ama la propria vita, la perderà. Invece, chi è pronto a perdere la propria vita qui in terra, la salverà per lʼeternità. 26 Se qualcuno vuole servirmi, mi segua, perché dove sono io ci saranno anche quelli che mi servono. E se mi seguono, il Padre li ricompenserà. 27 Adesso la mia anima è turbata. Che dovrei dire: “Padre, salvami da ciò che mi aspetta!”? Ma se è proprio per questo che sono venuto! 28 Padre, glorifica ed onora il tuo nome!» Una voce dal cielo disse: «Lʼho glorificato e lo glorificherò ancora». 29 Molte persone fra la folla udirono la voce ed alcuni di loro pensarono che fosse un tuono. Altri, invece, dicevano: «No, è stato un angelo che gli ha parlato!» 30 Allora Gesù spiegò: «Quella voce non era per me, ma per voi. 31 Per il mondo è giunto il tempo del giudizio, il tempo in cui Satana, principe di questo mondo, sta per essere cacciato. 32 E quando sarò innalzato dalla terra, attirerò tutti a me». 33 Parlava così per indicare di che morte doveva morire. 34 «Morire?» replicò la folla. «Dalle Scritture avevamo capito che il Messia non sarebbe mai morto! Perché allora dici che morirà? Di quale Messia stai parlando?» 35 E Gesù rispose: «La mia luce resterà con voi ancora per poco. Finché potete, camminate in questa luce, prima che vi sorprenda il buio. Allora sì che sarà troppo tardi per trovare la strada! 36 Finché avete la luce (cioè me stesso), prestatele fede e diventerete così figli della verità!» Detto questo, Gesù si allontanò e si nascose alla loro vista. 37 Nonostante tutti i miracoli che aveva fatto, la maggior parte della gente non voleva credere che Gesù fosse il Messia. 38 Si avverava così la profezia del profeta Isaia: «Signore, chi crederà alle nostre parole? Chi accetterà come prova i potenti miracoli di Dio?» 39 Non potevano credere perché, come aveva detto lo stesso profeta: 40 «Dio ha accecato i loro occhi e indurito i loro cuori, perché non possano vedere, né capire, né rivolgersi a me, perché io li guarisca». 41 Quando fece questa profezia, Isaia si riferiva a Gesù, perché aveva avuto una visione della sua gloria. 42 Tuttavia, molti, anche fra i capi giudei, credettero che Gesù fosse il Messia, ma non lo dicevano a nessuno, per paura che i Farisei li cacciassero dalla Sinagoga. 43 Infatti, tenevano più allʼapprovazione degli uomini, che a quella di Dio. 44 Gesù gridò alla folla: «Chi vede me, vede Dio che mi ha mandato. 46 Io sono la luce. Sono venuto in questo mondo perché chi crede in me non resti nelle tenebre. 47 Chi mi ascolta e non mi ubbidisce, io non lo giudico, perché sono venuto per salvare il mondo, non per giudicarlo. 48 Ma chi mi respinge e non accetta le mie parole, ha un giudice che lo aspetta: nel giorno del giudizio sarà giudicato secondo la verità che ho predicato. 49 Non vi ho esposto le mie idee, ma vi ho riferito ciò che il Padre mi ha ordinato dʼinsegnare. 50 Io so che i suoi insegnamenti portano alla vita eterna; perciò le cose che Dio mi ha ordinato di dire, io le dico tali e quali».

Mary Anoints Jesus at Bethany

1 Six days before the Passover, Jesus therefore came to Bethany, where Lazarus was, whom Jesus had raised from the dead. 2 So they gave a dinner for him there. Martha served, and Lazarus was one of those reclining with him at table. 3 Mary therefore took a pound* of expensive ointment made from pure nard, and anointed the feet of Jesus and wiped his feet with her hair. The house was filled with the fragrance of the perfume. 4 But Judas Iscariot, one of his disciples (he who was about to betray him), said, 5 “Why was this ointment not sold for three hundred denarii* and given to the poor?” 6 He said this, not because he cared about the poor, but because he was a thief, and having charge of the moneybag he used to help himself to what was put into it. 7 Jesus said, “Leave her alone, so that she may keep it* for the day of my burial. 8 For the poor you always have with you, but you do not always have me.”

The Plot to Kill Lazarus

9 When the large crowd of the Jews learned that Jesus* was there, they came, not only on account of him but also to see Lazarus, whom he had raised from the dead. 10 So the chief priests made plans to put Lazarus to death as well, 11 because on account of him many of the Jews were going away and believing in Jesus.

The Triumphal Entry

12 The next day the large crowd that had come to the feast heard that Jesus was coming to Jerusalem. 13 So they took branches of palm trees and went out to meet him, crying out, “Hosanna! Blessed is he who comes in the name of the Lord, even the King of Israel!” 14 And Jesus found a young donkey and sat on it, just as it is written, 15 “Fear not, daughter of Zion; behold, your king is coming, sitting on a donkey’s colt!” 16 His disciples did not understand these things at first, but when Jesus was glorified, then they remembered that these things had been written about him and had been done to him. 17 The crowd that had been with him when he called Lazarus out of the tomb and raised him from the dead continued to bear witness. 18 The reason why the crowd went to meet him was that they heard he had done this sign. 19 So the Pharisees said to one another, “You see that you are gaining nothing. Look, the world has gone after him.”

Some Greeks Seek Jesus

20 Now among those who went up to worship at the feast were some Greeks. 21 So these came to Philip, who was from Bethsaida in Galilee, and asked him, “Sir, we wish to see Jesus.” 22 Philip went and told Andrew; Andrew and Philip went and told Jesus. 23 And Jesus answered them, “The hour has come for the Son of Man to be glorified. 24 Truly, truly, I say to you, unless a grain of wheat falls into the earth and dies, it remains alone; but if it dies, it bears much fruit. 25 Whoever loves his life loses it, and whoever hates his life in this world will keep it for eternal life. 26 If anyone serves me, he must follow me; and where I am, there will my servant be also. If anyone serves me, the Father will honor him.

The Son of Man Must Be Lifted Up

27 “Now is my soul troubled. And what shall I say? ‘Father, save me from this hour’? But for this purpose I have come to this hour. 28 Father, glorify your name.” Then a voice came from heaven: “I have glorified it, and I will glorify it again.” 29 The crowd that stood there and heard it said that it had thundered. Others said, “An angel has spoken to him.” 30 Jesus answered, “This voice has come for your sake, not mine. 31 Now is the judgment of this world; now will the ruler of this world be cast out. 32 And I, when I am lifted up from the earth, will draw all people to myself.” 33 He said this to show by what kind of death he was going to die. 34 So the crowd answered him, “We have heard from the Law that the Christ remains forever. How can you say that the Son of Man must be lifted up? Who is this Son of Man?” 35 So Jesus said to them, “The light is among you for a little while longer. Walk while you have the light, lest darkness overtake you. The one who walks in the darkness does not know where he is going.

The Unbelief of the People

36 While you have the light, believe in the light, that you may become sons of light.” When Jesus had said these things, he departed and hid himself from them. 37 Though he had done so many signs before them, they still did not believe in him, 38 so that the word spoken by the prophet Isaiah might be fulfilled: “Lord, who has believed what he heard from us, and to whom has the arm of the Lord been revealed?” 39 Therefore they could not believe. For again Isaiah said, 40 “He has blinded their eyes and hardened their heart, lest they see with their eyes, and understand with their heart, and turn, and I would heal them.” 41 Isaiah said these things because he saw his glory and spoke of him. 42 Nevertheless, many even of the authorities believed in him, but for fear of the Pharisees they did not confess it, so that they would not be put out of the synagogue; 43 for they loved the glory that comes from man more than the glory that comes from God.

Jesus Came to Save the World

44 And Jesus cried out and said, “Whoever believes in me, believes not in me but in him who sent me. 45 And whoever sees me sees him who sent me. 46 I have come into the world as light, so that whoever believes in me may not remain in darkness. 47 If anyone hears my words and does not keep them, I do not judge him; for I did not come to judge the world but to save the world. 48 The one who rejects me and does not receive my words has a judge; the word that I have spoken will judge him on the last day. 49 For I have not spoken on my own authority, but the Father who sent me has himself given me a commandment—what to say and what to speak. 50 And I know that his commandment is eternal life. What I say, therefore, I say as the Father has told me.”
