Johannes 11 | La Parola è Vita

1 Un uomo di nome Lazzaro era ammalato. Viveva a Betania con le sue sorelle Marta e Maria. 2 Maria era la donna che poi cosparse di profumo i piedi del Signore e li asciugò con i suoi capelli. 3 Le due sorelle, mandarono a chiamare Gesù con questo messaggio: «Signore, il tuo caro amico è grave!» 4 Quando Gesù seppe della cosa, rispose: «Lazzaro non morirà di questa malattia, che servirà, invece, a dare gloria a Dio, perché sia lodato suo Figlio!» 5 Nonostante volesse molto bene a Marta, Maria e Lazzaro, Gesù si trattenne dovʼera per altri due giorni, anziché andare subito da loro. 7 Finalmente disse ai discepoli: «Torniamo in Giudea». 8 «Maestro», osservarono i discepoli, «soltanto pochi giorni fa i capi religiosi giudei volevano ucciderti. E tu ci vuoi tornare?» 9 Gesù rispose: «Ci sono dodici ore di luce al giorno, durante le quali si può camminare con sicurezza, senza inciampare. 10 Di notte, invece, cʼè pericolo di fare un passo falso, perché è buio». 11 Poi aggiunse: «Il nostro amico Lazzaro dorme, ma ora vado a svegliarlo!» 12 Allora i discepoli, pensando che Gesù dicesse che Lazzaro stava riposando, commentarono: «Meglio così, vuol dire che sta migliorando!» Il Signore, invece, intendeva dire che Lazzaro era morto. 14 Allora disse chiaramente: «Lazzaro è morto! 15 Ma sono contento per voi che non ero là, perché ora avrete unʼaltra occasione per credere in me. Venite, andiamo da lui!» 16 Tommaso, detto«il gemello», disse ai compagni: «Andiamo anche noi a morire con lui!» 17 Quando arrivarono a Betania, seppero che Lazzaro era già stato sepolto da quattro giorni. 18 Betania dista circa tre chilometri da Gerusalemme e 19 molti Giudei erano venuti a fare le condoglianze e a consolare Marta e Maria. 20 Quando Marta sentì che stava arrivando Gesù, gli corse incontro; Maria, invece, rimase a casa. 21 Marta disse a Gesù: «Signore, se tu fossi stato qui, mio fratello non sarebbe morto! Ma anche adesso non è troppo tardi, so che basta che tu glielo chieda, e Dio lo resusciterà!» 23 Gesù le disse: «Tuo fratello vivrà!» 24 «Certo», replicò Marta, «il giorno della resurrezione, come tutti!» 25 Gesù le disse: «Io sono quello che resuscita i morti e li riporta alla vita. Chi crede in me, anche se muore, come qualsiasi altro, vivrà; avrà vita eterna per aver creduto in me e non perirà mai. Lo credi tu, Marta?» 27 «Sì, Maestro», rispose la donna. «Io credo che tu sei il Messia, il Figlio di Dio, quello che abbiamo aspettato per tanto tempo». 28 Detto ciò, Marta tornò da Maria e, prendendola in disparte, le disse: «Il Maestro è qui e vuole vederti». 29 Maria sʼaffrettò a correre da Gesù. 30 Gesù non era ancora entrato nel villaggio, ma era rimasto là, dove Marta lo aveva incontrato. 31 Quando i Giudei, che erano venuti per consolare Maria, la videro allontanarsi di fretta, pensarono che stesse andando a piangere sulla tomba di Lazzaro, così la seguirono. 32 Maria raggiunse Gesù, gli si buttò ai piedi e disse: «Signore, se tu fossi stato qui, mio fratello sarebbe ancora vivo!» 33 Quando Gesù vide Maria e i Giudei che piangevano, si sentì profondamente turbato: 34 «Dovʼè sepolto?» domandò. «Vieni a vedere», risposero. 35 Allora Gesù pianse. 36 «Erano grandi amici», commentava la gente. «Guardate come gli voleva bene!» 37 Ma alcuni di loro aggiunsero: «Se ha guarito un cieco, perché non ha fatto in modo che Lazzaro non morisse?!» Gesù si sentì di nuovo turbato. Arrivarono alla tomba, una grotta chiusa da una grossa pietra rotonda. 39 «Spostate la pietra!» ordinò Gesù. A queste parole Marta, la sorella del morto, obiettò: «Signore, è morto già da quattro giorni, ormai puzza!» 40 Ma Gesù replicò: «Marta, non ti ho detto che se crederai, vedrai la gloria di Dio?» 41 Levarono, quindi, la pietra. Allora Gesù alzò gli occhi al cielo e disse: «Padre, grazie di avermi ascoltato! 42 Tu mi ascolti sempre, lo so, ma lʼho detto per tutte le persone qui presenti, perché credano che sei stato tu a mandarmi». 43 Poi gridò: «Lazzaro, vieni fuori!» 44 E Lazzaro uscì: tutto fasciato, con la faccia coperta da un sudario. Gesù disse loro: «Toglietegli le bende e lasciatelo andare!» 45 A questo miracolo, molti Giudei che avevano seguito Maria, credettero in lui. 46 Altri, invece, andarono dai Farisei a riferire lʼaccaduto.

Condanna a morte

47 Allora i capi sacerdoti e i Farisei si riunirono a consiglio per discutere la situazione. «Che facciamo?» si chiedevano. «Questʼuomo fa molti miracoli! 48 Se lo lasciamo fare, tutta la popolazione lo seguirà, allora lʼesercito romano verrà a sterminarci e a occupare il nostro paese!» 49 Uno di loro, Caifa, quellʼanno in carica di sommo sacerdote, disse: «Stupidi idioti! 50 Che sia lui solo a morire per tutti! Perché mai dovrebbe finire in rovina tutta la nazione?» 51 La profezia che Gesù doveva morire per tutti venne pronunciata da Caifa in veste di sommo sacerdote. Ciò che disse fu per ispirazione, non frutto di una sua personale riflessione. 52 Così fu predetto che la morte di Gesù non sarebbe stata soltanto a favore dʼIsraele, ma di tutti i figli di Dio sparsi nel mondo. 53 Da quel momento in poi i capi giudei si dettero da fare per ucciderlo. 54 A questo punto Gesù non si fece più vedere in pubblico, e si allontanò da Gerusalemme. Raggiunti i confini del deserto, si recò nel villaggio di Efraim, dove rimase con i discepoli. 55 La Pasqua, giorno sacro ai Giudei, era vicina, e molta gente di campagna arrivava a Gerusalemme con qualche giorno di anticipo, per procedere alla cerimonia di purificazione, prima della festa. 56 Volevano vedere Gesù nel tempio e il quesito del momento era: «Verrà o non verrà per la Pasqua?» 57 Nel frattempo, i capi sacerdoti e i Farisei avevano dato ordine che, se qualcuno avesse visto Gesù, lo segnalasse immediatamente, perché volevano arrestarlo.

The Death of Lazarus

1 Now a certain man was ill, Lazarus of Bethany, the village of Mary and her sister Martha. 2 It was Mary who anointed the Lord with ointment and wiped his feet with her hair, whose brother Lazarus was ill. 3 So the sisters sent to him, saying, “Lord, he whom you love is ill.” 4 But when Jesus heard it he said, “This illness does not lead to death. It is for the glory of God, so that the Son of God may be glorified through it.” 5 Now Jesus loved Martha and her sister and Lazarus. 6 So, when he heard that Lazarus* was ill, he stayed two days longer in the place where he was. 7 Then after this he said to the disciples, “Let us go to Judea again.” 8 The disciples said to him, “Rabbi, the Jews were just now seeking to stone you, and are you going there again?” 9 Jesus answered, “Are there not twelve hours in the day? If anyone walks in the day, he does not stumble, because he sees the light of this world. 10 But if anyone walks in the night, he stumbles, because the light is not in him.” 11 After saying these things, he said to them, “Our friend Lazarus has fallen asleep, but I go to awaken him.” 12 The disciples said to him, “Lord, if he has fallen asleep, he will recover.” 13 Now Jesus had spoken of his death, but they thought that he meant taking rest in sleep. 14 Then Jesus told them plainly, “Lazarus has died, 15 and for your sake I am glad that I was not there, so that you may believe. But let us go to him.” 16 So Thomas, called the Twin,* said to his fellow disciples, “Let us also go, that we may die with him.”

I Am the Resurrection and the Life

17 Now when Jesus came, he found that Lazarus had already been in the tomb four days. 18 Bethany was near Jerusalem, about two miles* off, 19 and many of the Jews had come to Martha and Mary to console them concerning their brother. 20 So when Martha heard that Jesus was coming, she went and met him, but Mary remained seated in the house. 21 Martha said to Jesus, “Lord, if you had been here, my brother would not have died. 22 But even now I know that whatever you ask from God, God will give you.” 23 Jesus said to her, “Your brother will rise again.” 24 Martha said to him, “I know that he will rise again in the resurrection on the last day.” 25 Jesus said to her, “I am the resurrection and the life.* Whoever believes in me, though he die, yet shall he live, 26 and everyone who lives and believes in me shall never die. Do you believe this?” 27 She said to him, “Yes, Lord; I believe that you are the Christ, the Son of God, who is coming into the world.”

Jesus Weeps

28 When she had said this, she went and called her sister Mary, saying in private, “The Teacher is here and is calling for you.” 29 And when she heard it, she rose quickly and went to him. 30 Now Jesus had not yet come into the village, but was still in the place where Martha had met him. 31 When the Jews who were with her in the house, consoling her, saw Mary rise quickly and go out, they followed her, supposing that she was going to the tomb to weep there. 32 Now when Mary came to where Jesus was and saw him, she fell at his feet, saying to him, “Lord, if you had been here, my brother would not have died.” 33 When Jesus saw her weeping, and the Jews who had come with her also weeping, he was deeply moved* in his spirit and greatly troubled. 34 And he said, “Where have you laid him?” They said to him, “Lord, come and see.” 35 Jesus wept. 36 So the Jews said, “See how he loved him!” 37 But some of them said, “Could not he who opened the eyes of the blind man also have kept this man from dying?”

Jesus Raises Lazarus

38 Then Jesus, deeply moved again, came to the tomb. It was a cave, and a stone lay against it. 39 Jesus said, “Take away the stone.” Martha, the sister of the dead man, said to him, “Lord, by this time there will be an odor, for he has been dead four days.” 40 Jesus said to her, “Did I not tell you that if you believed you would see the glory of God?” 41 So they took away the stone. And Jesus lifted up his eyes and said, “Father, I thank you that you have heard me. 42 I knew that you always hear me, but I said this on account of the people standing around, that they may believe that you sent me.” 43 When he had said these things, he cried out with a loud voice, “Lazarus, come out.” 44 The man who had died came out, his hands and feet bound with linen strips, and his face wrapped with a cloth. Jesus said to them, “Unbind him, and let him go.”

The Plot to Kill Jesus

45 Many of the Jews therefore, who had come with Mary and had seen what he did, believed in him, 46 but some of them went to the Pharisees and told them what Jesus had done. 47 So the chief priests and the Pharisees gathered the council and said, “What are we to do? For this man performs many signs. 48 If we let him go on like this, everyone will believe in him, and the Romans will come and take away both our place and our nation.” 49 But one of them, Caiaphas, who was high priest that year, said to them, “You know nothing at all. 50 Nor do you understand that it is better for you that one man should die for the people, not that the whole nation should perish.” 51 He did not say this of his own accord, but being high priest that year he prophesied that Jesus would die for the nation, 52 and not for the nation only, but also to gather into one the children of God who are scattered abroad. 53 So from that day on they made plans to put him to death. 54 Jesus therefore no longer walked openly among the Jews, but went from there to the region near the wilderness, to a town called Ephraim, and there he stayed with the disciples. 55 Now the Passover of the Jews was at hand, and many went up from the country to Jerusalem before the Passover to purify themselves. 56 They were looking for* Jesus and saying to one another as they stood in the temple, “What do you think? That he will not come to the feast at all?” 57 Now the chief priests and the Pharisees had given orders that if anyone knew where he was, he should let them know, so that they might arrest him.
