Assíria, o instrumento do Senhor

1 O SENHOR deu-me mais esta mensagem: “Faz uma grande tabuleta e escreve nela o anúncio do nascimento do filho que te vou dar. Escreve em caracteres legíveis! O seu nome será Maer-Salal-Has-Baz*, que quer dizer: Os teus inimigos serão em breve destruídos.” 2 Pedi ao sacerdote Urias e a Zacarias, filho de Jeberequias, ambos conhecidos como pessoas fiéis, que viessem, de forma a poderem testemunhar que o tinha realmente escrito. 3 Depois juntei-me com a profetisa, ela engravidou e teve um filho. O SENHOR disse-me: “Chama-lhe Maer-Salal-Has-Baz. 4 Este nome profetiza que dentro de algum tempo, antes que o menino seja capaz de dizer papá e mamã, o rei da Assíria invadirá tanto Damasco como a Samaria, levando consigo os despojos que saqueou.” 5 O SENHOR falou-me outra vez: 6 “O povo de Jerusalém rejeitou as águas de Siloé, que correm brandamente, e derrete-se de medo dos dois reis, o rei Rezim e o rei Peca, filho de Remalias. 7 Por isso, hei de fazer submergir o meu povo com as torrentes impetuosas do Eufrates; o rei da Assíria e todos os seus poderosos exércitos se enfurecerão contra eles. 8 Esse rio transbordará das suas margens e inundará a terra de Judá, ó Emanuel, submergindo-a duma extremidade à outra.” 9 Façam tudo o que fizerem de mal, ó Aram e Israel, nossos inimigos, não terão sucesso, serão despedaçados. Ouçam bem, todos os que são nossos inimigos: 10 Preparem-se para nos fazerem guerra, contudo, hão de morrer! Sim, hão de morrer! Convoquem os vossos conselhos de guerra, estudem estratégias, preparem os vossos planos de ataque, no final serão destruídos, porque Deus é connosco!*

Temer só ao Senhor

11 O SENHOR avisou-me de forma categórica, com mão forte sobre mim: “Em circunstância nenhuma te deixes levar pelos planos de Judá! 12 Não acreditem em conspiração, quando este povo fala de conspiração! Não participem dos seus receios e temores nem percam a esperança. 13 Santifiquem unicamente ao SENHOR dos exércitos! É dele que devem ter medo, é ele que vos deve inspirar temor. 14 Ele será, tanto para o reino de Israel como para o de Judá, um santuário. Mas também será uma pedra de tropeço, uma rocha que os fará cair; será como uma armadilha ou uma cilada para o povo em Jerusalém. 15 Muitos deles tropeçarão; serão despedaçados; serão apanhados em ciladas e ficarão cativos.” 16 Isaías disse: “Escreve todas estas coisas e sela-as. Confia-as aos meus discípulos. 17 Espero no SENHOR, ainda que de momento esconda o seu rosto aos descendentes de Jacob. Nele esperarei. 18 Aqui estou eu, com os filhos que o SENHOR me deu; juntos tornámo-nos símbolos e prodígios em Israel, da parte do SENHOR dos exércitos que habita no monte Sião.” 19 Então porque andam a tentar descobrir o futuro, consultando adivinhos e os espíritos dos mortos? Não deem ouvidos aos seus sussurros, ao que vos murmuram ao ouvido. Alguma vez seria possível que os mortos revelassem o futuro aos vivos? Então porque não recorrem ao vosso Deus? 20 Consultem a palavra de Deus e o testemunho que vos dei selado! Se o que dizem esses bruxos é diferente da mensagem de Deus, é porque Deus nunca os enviou; pois neles não há a luz da revelação e da verdade. 21 O meu povo será levado cativo, aos tropeções, oprimido e faminto. E justamente porque estão com fome e enraivecidos, levantarão os seus punhos contra o céu e amaldiçoarão o seu Rei e seu Deus. 22 Para onde quer que olhem só veem agitação, angústia e negro desespero. E assim serão impelidos para as trevas.

The Coming Assyrian Invasion

1 Then the Lord said to me, “Take a large tablet and write on it in common characters,* ‘Belonging to Maher-shalal-hash-baz.’* 2 And I will get reliable witnesses, Uriah the priest and Zechariah the son of Jeberechiah, to attest for me.” 3 And I went to the prophetess, and she conceived and bore a son. Then the Lord said to me, “Call his name Maher-shalal-hash-baz; 4 for before the boy knows how to cry ‘My father’ or ‘My mother,’ the wealth of Damascus and the spoil of Samaria will be carried away before the king of Assyria.” 5 The Lord spoke to me again: 6 “Because this people has refused the waters of Shiloah that flow gently, and rejoice over Rezin and the son of Remaliah, 7 therefore, behold, the Lord is bringing up against them the waters of the River,* mighty and many, the king of Assyria and all his glory. And it will rise over all its channels and go over all its banks, 8 and it will sweep on into Judah, it will overflow and pass on, reaching even to the neck, and its outspread wings will fill the breadth of your land, O Immanuel.” 9 Be broken,* you peoples, and be shattered;* give ear, all you far countries; strap on your armor and be shattered; strap on your armor and be shattered. 10 Take counsel together, but it will come to nothing; speak a word, but it will not stand, for God is with us.*

Fear God, Wait for the Lord

11 For the Lord spoke thus to me with his strong hand upon me, and warned me not to walk in the way of this people, saying: 12 “Do not call conspiracy all that this people calls conspiracy, and do not fear what they fear, nor be in dread. 13 But the Lord of hosts, him you shall honor as holy. Let him be your fear, and let him be your dread. 14 And he will become a sanctuary and a stone of offense and a rock of stumbling to both houses of Israel, a trap and a snare to the inhabitants of Jerusalem. 15 And many shall stumble on it. They shall fall and be broken; they shall be snared and taken.” 16 Bind up the testimony; seal the teaching* among my disciples. 17 I will wait for the Lord, who is hiding his face from the house of Jacob, and I will hope in him. 18 Behold, I and the children whom the Lord has given me are signs and portents in Israel from the Lord of hosts, who dwells on Mount Zion. 19 And when they say to you, “Inquire of the mediums and the necromancers who chirp and mutter,” should not a people inquire of their God? Should they inquire of the dead on behalf of the living? 20 To the teaching and to the testimony! If they will not speak according to this word, it is because they have no dawn. 21 They will pass through the land,* greatly distressed and hungry. And when they are hungry, they will be enraged and will speak contemptuously against* their king and their God, and turn their faces upward. 22 And they will look to the earth, but behold, distress and darkness, the gloom of anguish. And they will be thrust into thick darkness.
