O sinal de Emanuel

1 Durante o reinado de Acaz, filho de Jotão e neto de Uzias, rei de Judá, Jerusalém foi atacada pelo rei Rezim de Aram e pelo rei Peca de Israel, que era filho de Remalias. Mas não chegou a ser tomada, pois a cidade resistiu. 2 Quando chegou à corte a notícia de que Aram se tinha aliado com Israel contra a cidade, os corações, tanto do rei como do povo, tremeram de medo, como árvores dum bosque abaladas por um vendaval. 3 Então o SENHOR disse a Isaías: “Vai encontrar-te com o rei Acaz. Vai tu e teu filho Sear-Jasube*. Hão de encontrá-lo no fim do aqueduto do reservatório superior, perto da estrada que desce até ao campo das lavadeiras. 4 Diz-lhe que deixe de se angustiar, que não precisa de estar com medo da fúria de Rezim, o arameu, e de Peca, filho de Remalias, pois são dois indivíduos falhados. 5 É verdade que esses dois, os reis de Aram e de Efraim, virão contra ti, dizendo: 6 ‘Vamos invadir Judá e pôr essa população em pânico, para podermos depois tomar facilmente Jerusalém e colocar ali o filho de Tabeel como rei.’ 7 Contudo, o SENHOR Deus responde-lhes que esse plano não resultará. 8 Porque Damasco continuará a ser a capital de Aram e o rei Rezim nunca chegará a alargar as suas fronteiras. É verdade que dentro de sessenta e cinco anos Efraim também será derrotada e aniquilada. 9 Até lá, Samaria manter-se-á a única grande cidade, a capital de Efraim, e o poder do rei Peca não virá a aumentar. Se não crerem em mim não poderão ficar firmes e não poderei ajudar-vos!” 10 O SENHOR mandou mais esta mensagem ao rei Acaz: 11 “Pede ao SENHOR, ao teu Deus, um sinal que prove que esmagarei os teus inimigos, como tinha dito. Pede-lhe um sinal, venha ele das profundezas ou do alto dos céus!” 12 Mas o rei recusou: “Não, não peço! Não poria o SENHOR à prova!” 13 Então Isaías disse: “Ó casa de David, não estás satisfeita em esgotar a minha paciência, como ainda cansas a paciência do meu Deus? 14 Está bem, então! O Senhor, ele próprio, escolherá o sinal: a virgem ficará grávida e dará à luz um filho, e pôr-lhe-ás o nome de Emanuel, ‘Deus connosco’. 15 Comerá manteiga e mel, até chegar à idade de saber escolher entre o bem e o mal. 16 Mas antes que o menino saiba rejeitar o mal e escolher o bem, a terra dos dois reis que tanto temes ficará deserta. 17 O SENHOR trará uma terrível maldição sobre vocês, sobre a vossa nação, sobre a casa de David. Será um terror como nunca houve desde a divisão do reino de Salomão em Israel e Judá, porque o poderoso rei da Assíria virá com o seu grande exército!” 18 Nesse tempo, o SENHOR assobiará aos exércitos do alto Egito e da Assíria, para que enxameiem a vossa terra e caiam sobre vocês como moscas; que vos destruam, como abelhas vos ferrem e vos matem. 19 Virão em vastos bandos, espalhando-se por toda a terra; até pelos vales desabitados, pelas cavernas, pelos sítios onde não há senão espinhos; também ocuparão as florestas e as terras férteis. 20 Nesse dia, o Senhor pegará nessa navalha que está para além do rio Eufrates, esses assírios que vocês contrataram para vos salvarem, para que rapem tudo o que têm; terra, searas, povo! 21 Quando, finalmente, acabarem a pilhagem, a terra toda se tornará num imenso terreno de pastagem. Todos os rebanhos e todo o gado serão destruídos; um lavrador que tenha ficado com uma bezerra e duas ovelhas considerar-se-á feliz. 22 No entanto, toda essa terra de pasto produzirá leite em abundância e aqueles que tiverem sido deixados na terra alimentar-se-ão de manteiga e mel. 23 Por esse tempo, as vinhas mais suculentas tornar-se-ão sarças e espinheiros. A terra inteira se tornará um vasto campo de espinhos, numa terra de caça, percorrida apenas por animais selvagens. Ninguém mais irá para as férteis colinas, que antigamente estavam cheias de jardins e pomares, porque lá só haverá ervas e sarças; apenas o gado ali irá para pastar.

Isaiah Sent to King Ahaz

1 In the days of Ahaz the son of Jotham, son of Uzziah, king of Judah, Rezin the king of Syria and Pekah the son of Remaliah the king of Israel came up to Jerusalem to wage war against it, but could not yet mount an attack against it. 2 When the house of David was told, “Syria is in league with* Ephraim,” the heart of Ahaz* and the heart of his people shook as the trees of the forest shake before the wind. 3 And the Lord said to Isaiah, “Go out to meet Ahaz, you and Shear-jashub* your son, at the end of the conduit of the upper pool on the highway to the Washer’s Field. 4 And say to him, ‘Be careful, be quiet, do not fear, and do not let your heart be faint because of these two smoldering stumps of firebrands, at the fierce anger of Rezin and Syria and the son of Remaliah. 5 Because Syria, with Ephraim and the son of Remaliah, has devised evil against you, saying, 6 “Let us go up against Judah and terrify it, and let us conquer it* for ourselves, and set up the son of Tabeel as king in the midst of it,” 7 thus says the Lord God: “It shall not stand, and it shall not come to pass. 8 For the head of Syria is Damascus, and the head of Damascus is Rezin. And within sixty-five years Ephraim will be shattered from being a people. 9 And the head of Ephraim is Samaria, and the head of Samaria is the son of Remaliah. If you* are not firm in faith, you will not be firm at all.’”

The Sign of Immanuel

10 Again the Lord spoke to Ahaz: 11 “Ask a sign of the Lord your* God; let it be deep as Sheol or high as heaven.” 12 But Ahaz said, “I will not ask, and I will not put the Lord to the test.” 13 And he* said, “Hear then, O house of David! Is it too little for you to weary men, that you weary my God also? 14 Therefore the Lord himself will give you a sign. Behold, the virgin shall conceive and bear a son, and shall call his name Immanuel.* 15 He shall eat curds and honey when he knows how to refuse the evil and choose the good. 16 For before the boy knows how to refuse the evil and choose the good, the land whose two kings you dread will be deserted. 17 The Lord will bring upon you and upon your people and upon your father’s house such days as have not come since the day that Ephraim departed from Judah—the king of Assyria!” 18 In that day the Lord will whistle for the fly that is at the end of the streams of Egypt, and for the bee that is in the land of Assyria. 19 And they will all come and settle in the steep ravines, and in the clefts of the rocks, and on all the thornbushes, and on all the pastures.* 20 In that day the Lord will shave with a razor that is hired beyond the River*—with the king of Assyria—the head and the hair of the feet, and it will sweep away the beard also. 21 In that day a man will keep alive a young cow and two sheep, 22 and because of the abundance of milk that they give, he will eat curds, for everyone who is left in the land will eat curds and honey. 23 In that day every place where there used to be a thousand vines, worth a thousand shekels* of silver, will become briers and thorns. 24 With bow and arrows a man will come there, for all the land will be briers and thorns. 25 And as for all the hills that used to be hoed with a hoe, you will not come there for fear of briers and thorns, but they will become a place where cattle are let loose and where sheep tread.
