The demand for a sign

1 The Pharisees and Sadducees came to Jesus and tested him by asking him to show them a sign from heaven. 2 He replied, ‘When evening comes, you say, “It will be fair weather, for the sky is red,” 3 and in the morning, “Today it will be stormy, for the sky is red and overcast.” You know how to interpret the appearance of the sky, but you cannot interpret the signs of the times.* 4 A wicked and adulterous generation looks for a sign, but none will be given it except the sign of Jonah.’ Jesus then left them and went away.

The yeast of the Pharisees and Sadducees

5 When they went across the lake, the disciples forgot to take bread. 6 ‘Be careful,’ Jesus said to them. ‘Be on your guard against the yeast of the Pharisees and Sadducees.’ 7 They discussed this among themselves and said, ‘It is because we didn’t bring any bread.’ 8 Aware of their discussion, Jesus asked, ‘You of little faith, why are you talking among yourselves about having no bread? 9 Do you still not understand? Don’t you remember the five loaves for the five thousand, and how many basketfuls you gathered? 10 Or the seven loaves for the four thousand, and how many basketfuls you gathered? 11 How is it you don’t understand that I was not talking to you about bread? But be on your guard against the yeast of the Pharisees and Sadducees.’ 12 Then they understood that he was not telling them to guard against the yeast used in bread, but against the teaching of the Pharisees and Sadducees.

Peter declares that Jesus is the Messiah

13 When Jesus came to the region of Caesarea Philippi, he asked his disciples, ‘Who do people say the Son of Man is?’ 14 They replied, ‘Some say John the Baptist; others say Elijah; and still others, Jeremiah or one of the prophets.’ 15 ‘But what about you?’ he asked. ‘Who do you say I am?’ 16 Simon Peter answered, ‘You are the Messiah, the Son of the living God.’ 17 Jesus replied, ‘Blessed are you, Simon son of Jonah, for this was not revealed to you by flesh and blood, but by my Father in heaven. 18 And I tell you that you are Peter,* and on this rock I will build my church, and the gates of Hades* will not overcome it. 19 I will give you the keys of the kingdom of heaven; whatever you bind on earth will be* bound in heaven, and whatever you loose on earth will be* loosed in heaven.’ 20 Then he ordered his disciples not to tell anyone that he was the Messiah.

Jesus predicts his death

21 From that time on Jesus began to explain to his disciples that he must go to Jerusalem and suffer many things at the hands of the elders, the chief priests and the teachers of the law, and that he must be killed and on the third day be raised to life. 22 Peter took him aside and began to rebuke him. ‘Never, Lord!’ he said. ‘This shall never happen to you!’ 23 Jesus turned and said to Peter, ‘Get behind me, Satan! You are a stumbling-block to me; you do not have in mind the concerns of God, but merely human concerns.’ 24 Then Jesus said to his disciples, ‘Whoever wants to be my disciple must deny themselves and take up their cross and follow me. 25 For whoever wants to save their life* will lose it, but whoever loses their life for me will find it. 26 What good will it be for someone to gain the whole world, yet forfeit their soul? Or what can anyone give in exchange for their soul? 27 For the Son of Man is going to come in his Father’s glory with his angels, and then he will reward each person according to what they have done. 28 ‘Truly I tell you, some who are standing here will not taste death before they see the Son of Man coming in his kingdom.’

Fariseii și saducheii cer un semn

1 Apropiindu‑se de El ca să‑L pună la încercare, fariseii și saducheii I‑au cerut să le arate un semn din cer*. 2 Dar Isus, răspunzând, le‑a zis: „Când se înserează, voi spuneți: «Va fi vreme frumoasă, pentru că cerul este roșu învăpăiat.» 3 Iar dimineața, spuneți: «Astăzi va fi furtună, pentru că cerul este roșu întunecat.» Fața cerului știți s‑o pricepeți, dar semnele vremurilor nu le puteți pricepe? 4 O generație rea și adulteră caută un semn, dar nu i se va da un alt semn decât semnul lui Iona“*. Apoi i‑a lăsat și a plecat.

Drojdia fariseilor și a saducheilor

5 Când ucenicii au ajuns de cealaltă parte a mării, și‑au dat seama că au uitat să ia pâini. 6 Isus le‑a zis: „Aveți grijă și păziți‑vă de drojdia fariseilor și a saducheilor!“ 7 Ei vorbeau între ei*, zicând: „Ne spune așa pentru că n‑am luat pâini.“ 8 Cunoscând aceasta, Isus le‑a zis: „Puțin credincioșilor! De ce vorbiți între voi* că n‑aveți pâini? 9 Tot nu înțelegeți? Nici nu vă mai aduceți aminte de cele cinci pâini pentru cei cinci mii de oameni și câte coșnițe ați strâns? 10 Nici de cele șapte pâini pentru cei patru mii de bărbați și câte coșuri ați strâns? 11 Cum de nu înțelegeți că nu despre pâini v‑am vorbit?! Ci v‑am spus să vă păziți de drojdia fariseilor și a saducheilor!“ 12 Abia atunci au înțeles ucenicii că El nu le zisese să se păzească de drojdia pentru pâine, ci de învățătura fariseilor și a saducheilor.

Mărturisirea de credință a lui Petru

13 Isus a venit în părțile Cezareei lui Filip* și i‑a întrebat pe ucenicii Săi, zicând: – Cine zic oamenii că este Fiul Omului? 14 Ei au zis: – Unii zic că este Ioan Botezătorul, alții zic că este Ilie, iar alții spun despre El că este Ieremia sau unul dintre profeți. 15 El le‑a zis: – Dar voi, cine ziceți că sunt Eu? 16 Simon Petru, răspunzând, a zis: – Tu ești Cristosul, Fiul Dumnezeului cel Viu! 17 Isus, răspunzând, i‑a zis: – Fericit ești tu, Simone, fiul lui Iona*, pentru că nu carnea și sângele ți‑au descoperit lucrul acesta, ci Tatăl Meu Care este în ceruri. 18 Iar Eu îți spun că tu ești Petru* și pe această stâncă Îmi voi zidi Biserica*, iar porțile Locuinței Morților* n‑o vor birui. 19 Îți voi da cheile Împărăției Cerurilor și orice vei lega pe pământ va fi legat în ceruri, iar orice vei dezlega pe pământ va fi dezlegat în ceruri.* 20 Atunci le‑a poruncit ucenicilor să nu spună nimănui că El este Cristosul.

Isus vorbește despre moartea și învierea Sa

21 De atunci încolo, Isus a început să le arate ucenicilor că El trebuie să meargă la Ierusalim și să sufere multe din partea bătrânilor*, a conducătorilor preoților și a cărturarilor, să fie omorât, iar a treia zi să fie înviat. 22 Petru însă L‑a luat deoparte și a început să‑L mustre, zicând: – Dumnezeu să aibă milă de Tine, Doamne! Să nu cumva să Ți se întâmple așa ceva! 23 Dar Isus S‑a întors și i‑a zis lui Petru: – Pleacă! Înapoia Mea, Satan*! Tu ești un prilej de poticnire* pentru Mine, căci nu te gândești la lucrurile lui Dumnezeu, ci la lucrurile oamenilor.

Prețul uceniciei

24 Atunci Isus le‑a zis ucenicilor Săi: – Dacă vrea cineva să vină după Mine, să se lepede de sine, să‑și ia crucea și să Mă urmeze. 25 Căci oricine vrea să‑și salveze viața o va pierde, dar cel ce‑și pierde viața de dragul Meu, o va găsi. 26 Într-adevăr, la ce i‑ar folosi unui om să câștige întreaga lume, dacă și‑ar pierde sufletul? Sau ce va da un om în schimbul sufletului său? 27 Căci Fiul Omului urmează să vină în slava Tatălui Său împreună cu îngerii Lui și atunci El va răsplăti fiecăruia după lucrarea lui. 28 Adevărat vă spun că sunt unii dintre cei ce stau aici care nu vor gusta nicidecum moartea înainte de a‑L vedea pe Fiul Omului venind în Împărăția Sa.*
