That which defiles

1 Then some Pharisees and teachers of the law came to Jesus from Jerusalem and asked, 2 ‘Why do your disciples break the tradition of the elders? They don’t wash their hands before they eat!’ 3 Jesus replied, ‘And why do you break the command of God for the sake of your tradition? 4 For God said, “Honour your father and mother”* and “Anyone who curses their father or mother is to be put to death.”* 5 But you say that if anyone declares that what might have been used to help their father or mother is “devoted to God,” 6 they are not to “honour their father or mother” with it. Thus you nullify the word of God for the sake of your tradition. 7 You hypocrites! Isaiah was right when he prophesied about you: 8 ‘ “These people honour me with their lips, but their hearts are far from me. 9 They worship me in vain; their teachings are merely human rules.” ’ 10 Jesus called the crowd to him and said, ‘Listen and understand. 11 What goes into someone’s mouth does not defile them, but what comes out of their mouth, that is what defiles them.’ 12 Then the disciples came to him and asked, ‘Do you know that the Pharisees were offended when they heard this?’ 13 He replied, ‘Every plant that my heavenly Father has not planted will be pulled up by the roots. 14 Leave them; they are blind guides.* If the blind lead the blind, both will fall into a pit.’ 15 Peter said, ‘Explain the parable to us.’ 16 ‘Are you still so dull?’ Jesus asked them. 17 ‘Don’t you see that whatever enters the mouth goes into the stomach and then out of the body? 18 But the things that come out of a person’s mouth come from the heart, and these defile them. 19 For out of the heart come evil thoughts – murder, adultery, sexual immorality, theft, false testimony, slander. 20 These are what defile a person; but eating with unwashed hands does not defile them.’

The faith of a Canaanite woman

21 Leaving that place, Jesus withdrew to the region of Tyre and Sidon. 22 A Canaanite woman from that vicinity came to him, crying out, ‘Lord, Son of David, have mercy on me! My daughter is demon-possessed and suffering terribly.’ 23 Jesus did not answer a word. So his disciples came to him and urged him, ‘Send her away, for she keeps crying out after us.’ 24 He answered, ‘I was sent only to the lost sheep of Israel.’ 25 The woman came and knelt before him. ‘Lord, help me!’ she said. 26 He replied, ‘It is not right to take the children’s bread and toss it to the dogs.’ 27 ‘Yes it is, Lord,’ she said. ‘Even the dogs eat the crumbs that fall from their master’s table.’ 28 Then Jesus said to her, ‘Woman, you have great faith! Your request is granted.’ And her daughter was healed at that moment.

Jesus feeds the four thousand

29 Jesus left there and went along the Sea of Galilee. Then he went up on a mountainside and sat down. 30 Great crowds came to him, bringing the lame, the blind, the crippled, the mute and many others, and laid them at his feet; and he healed them. 31 The people were amazed when they saw the mute speaking, the crippled made well, the lame walking and the blind seeing. And they praised the God of Israel. 32 Jesus called his disciples to him and said, ‘I have compassion for these people; they have already been with me three days and have nothing to eat. I do not want to send them away hungry, or they may collapse on the way.’ 33 His disciples answered, ‘Where could we get enough bread in this remote place to feed such a crowd?’ 34 ‘How many loaves do you have?’ Jesus asked. ‘Seven,’ they replied, ‘and a few small fish.’ 35 He told the crowd to sit down on the ground. 36 Then he took the seven loaves and the fish, and when he had given thanks, he broke them and gave them to the disciples, and they in turn to the people. 37 They all ate and were satisfied. Afterwards the disciples picked up seven basketfuls of broken pieces that were left over. 38 The number of those who ate was four thousand men, besides women and children. 39 After Jesus had sent the crowd away, he got into the boat and went to the vicinity of Magadan.

1 Atunci niște farisei și niște cărturari din Ierusalim s‑au apropiat de Isus*, zicând: 2 – De ce ucenicii Tăi încalcă tradiția bătrânilor*? Căci ei nu‑și spală mâinile înainte să mănânce pâine. 3 Isus, răspunzând, le‑a zis: – Dar voi de ce încălcați porunca lui Dumnezeu din cauza tradiției voastre? 4 Căci Dumnezeu a zis: „Cinstește‑i pe tatăl tău și pe mama ta“* și „Cel ce își vorbește de rău tatăl sau mama să fie pedepsit cu moartea“*. 5 Însă voi ziceți: „Dacă cineva îi spune tatălui său sau mamei sale: «Orice ajutor ai putea primi de la mine este deja închinat ca dar lui Dumnezeu», 6 acela nu mai este dator să‑și cinstească tatăl sau mama.“* Și ați desființat astfel Cuvântul lui Dumnezeu prin tradiția voastră. 7 Ipocriților! Bine a profețit Isaia despre voi, când a zis: 8 „Poporul acesta Mă cinstește cu buzele, dar inima lui este departe de Mine! 9 Degeaba însă Mi se închină ei, dând* ca învățături niște porunci de‑ale oamenilor!“*

Lucrurile care îl întinează pe om

10 Isus a chemat mulțimea și a zis: „Ascultați și înțelegeți! 11 Nu ceea ce intră în gură îl întinează pe om, ci ceea ce iese din gură, aceea îl întinează pe om!“ 12 Atunci ucenicii s‑au apropiat și I‑au zis: – Știi că fariseii s‑au poticnit când au auzit aceste cuvinte? 13 Isus, răspunzând, a zis: – Orice plantă pe care nu a sădit‑o Tatăl Meu ceresc va fi smulsă. 14 Lăsați‑i! Sunt niște călăuze oarbe pentru cei orbi. Și dacă un orb călăuzește un alt orb, amândoi vor cădea în groapă. 15 Petru, răspunzând, I‑a zis: – Explică‑ne pilda aceasta! 16 Isus a zis: – Și voi sunteți încă fără pricepere? 17 Nu înțelegeți că orice intră în gură ajunge în stomac, iar apoi este dat afară în latrină? 18 Dar ceea ce iese din gură vine din inimă și aceea îl întinează pe om. 19 Căci din inimă ies gândurile rele, crimele, adulterele, curviile*, furturile, mărturiile mincinoase și blasfemiile. 20 Acestea sunt lucrurile care îl întinează pe om. Dar a consuma mâncare cu mâinile nespălate nu‑l întinează pe om.

Credința canaanitei

21 Isus S‑a retras de acolo și S‑a dus în părțile Tyrului și ale Sidonului. 22 Și iată că o femeie canaanită, venind din hotarele acelea, striga, zicând: – Ai milă de mine, Doamne, Fiul lui David! Fiica mea este posedată cumplit de un demon! 23 Isus nu i‑a răspuns niciun cuvânt. Ucenicii s‑au apropiat și L‑au rugat, zicând: – Ajut‑o și las‑o să plece, căci strigă după noi. 24 El însă, răspunzând, a zis: – Nu am fost trimis decât la oile pierdute ale Casei lui Israel. 25 Dar ea a venit și I s‑a închinat, zicând: – Doamne, ajută‑mă! 26 Isus, răspunzând, a zis: – Nu este bine să iei pâinea copiilor și s‑o arunci la căței. 27 Însă ea a zis: – Da, Doamne, dar și cățeii mănâncă din firimiturile care cad de la masa stăpânilor lor. 28 Atunci Isus, răspunzând, i‑a zis: – O, femeie, mare este credința ta! Să ți se facă după cum dorești. Și fiica ei a fost vindecată chiar în ceasul acela.

Isus vindecă mulți oameni bolnavi

29 Isus a plecat de acolo și a venit lângă Marea Galileei. Apoi a urcat pe munte și S‑a așezat acolo. 30 Au venit la El mulțimi mari de oameni, având cu ei ologi, orbi, schilozi, muți și mulți alți bolnavi. Ei i‑au așezat la picioarele Lui, iar El i‑a vindecat, 31 astfel că mulțimea a rămas uimită văzând că muții vorbesc, cei schilozi se însănătoșesc, cei ologi umblă, iar cei orbi văd. Și L‑au slăvit pe Dumnezeul lui Israel.

Isus hrănește peste patru mii de oameni

32 Isus i‑a chemat pe ucenicii Săi și le‑a zis: – Mi‑e milă de cei din mulțime, pentru că sunt deja trei zile de când ei stau cu Mine și n‑au ce să mănânce. Nu vreau să‑i las să plece flămânzi, ca nu cumva să leșine pe drum. 33 Ucenicii I‑au zis: – De unde să luăm atâtea pâini în pustia aceasta, ca să săturăm atâta mulțime?! 34 Isus i‑a întrebat: – Câte pâini aveți? Ei au zis: – Șapte…și câțiva pești. 35 Și poruncind mulțimii să se așeze pe pământ, 36 Isus a luat cele șapte pâini și peștii și, după ce a mulțumit, le‑a frânt și le‑a dat ucenicilor, iar ucenicii le‑au împărțit mulțimilor. 37 Au mâncat toți și s‑au săturat. Și au adunat șapte coșuri pline cu firimiturile rămase. 38 Cei ce mâncaseră erau patru mii de bărbați, în afară de femei și de copii. 39 După ce a lăsat mulțimile să plece, Isus S‑a urcat în barcă și S‑a dus în hotarele Magadanului*.
