Hannah’s prayer

1 Then Hannah prayed and said: ‘My heart rejoices in the Lord; in the Lord my horn* is lifted high. My mouth boasts over my enemies, for I delight in your deliverance. 2 ‘There is no-one holy like the Lord; there is no-one besides you; there is no Rock like our God. 3 ‘Do not keep talking so proudly or let your mouth speak such arrogance, for the Lord is a God who knows, and by him deeds are weighed. 4 ‘The bows of the warriors are broken, but those who stumbled are armed with strength. 5 Those who were full hire themselves out for food, but those who were hungry are hungry no more. She who was barren has borne seven children, but she who has had many sons pines away. 6 ‘The Lord brings death and makes alive; he brings down to the grave and raises up. 7 The Lord sends poverty and wealth; he humbles and he exalts. 8 He raises the poor from the dust and lifts the needy from the ash heap; he seats them with princes and makes them inherit a throne of honour. ‘For the foundations of the earth are the Lord’s; on them he has set the world. 9 He will guard the feet of his faithful servants, but the wicked will be silenced in the place of darkness. ‘It is not by strength that one prevails; 10 those who oppose the Lord will be broken. The Most High will thunder from heaven; the Lord will judge the ends of the earth. ‘He will give strength to his king and exalt the horn of his anointed.’ 11 Then Elkanah went home to Ramah, but the boy ministered before the Lord under Eli the priest.

Eli’s wicked sons

12 Eli’s sons were scoundrels; they had no regard for the Lord. 13 Now it was the practice of the priests that, whenever any of the people offered a sacrifice, the priest’s servant would come with a three-pronged fork in his hand while the meat was being boiled 14 and would plunge the fork into the pan or kettle or cauldron or pot. Whatever the fork brought up the priest would take for himself. This is how they treated all the Israelites who came to Shiloh. 15 But even before the fat was burned, the priest’s servant would come and say to the person who was sacrificing, ‘Give the priest some meat to roast; he won’t accept boiled meat from you, but only raw.’ 16 If the person said to him, ‘Let the fat be burned first, and then take whatever you want,’ the servant would answer, ‘No, hand it over now; if you don’t, I’ll take it by force.’ 17 This sin of the young men was very great in the Lord’s sight, for they* were treating the Lord’s offering with contempt. 18 But Samuel was ministering before the Lord – a boy wearing a linen ephod. 19 Each year his mother made him a little robe and took it to him when she went up with her husband to offer the annual sacrifice. 20 Eli would bless Elkanah and his wife, saying, ‘May the Lord give you children by this woman to take the place of the one she prayed for and gave to* the Lord.’ Then they would go home. 21 And the Lord was gracious to Hannah; she gave birth to three sons and two daughters. Meanwhile, the boy Samuel grew up in the presence of the Lord. 22 Now Eli, who was very old, heard about everything his sons were doing to all Israel and how they slept with the women who served at the entrance to the tent of meeting. 23 So he said to them, ‘Why do you do such things? I hear from all the people about these wicked deeds of yours. 24 No, my sons; the report I hear spreading among the Lord’s people is not good. 25 If one person sins against another, God* may mediate for the offender; but if anyone sins against the Lord, who will intercede for them?’ His sons, however, did not listen to their father’s rebuke, for it was the Lord’s will to put them to death. 26 And the boy Samuel continued to grow in stature and in favour with the Lord and with people.

Prophecy against the house of Eli

27 Now a man of God came to Eli and said to him, ‘This is what the Lord says: “Did I not clearly reveal myself to your ancestor’s family when they were in Egypt under Pharaoh? 28 I chose your ancestor out of all the tribes of Israel to be my priest, to go up to my altar, to burn incense, and to wear an ephod in my presence. I also gave your ancestor’s family all the food offerings presented by the Israelites. 29 Why do you* scorn my sacrifice and offering that I prescribed for my dwelling? Why do you honour your sons more than me by fattening yourselves on the choice parts of every offering made by my people Israel?” 30 ‘Therefore the Lord, the God of Israel, declares: “I promised that members of your family would minister before me for ever.” But now the Lord declares: “Far be it from me! Those who honour me I will honour, but those who despise me will be disdained. 31 The time is coming when I will cut short your strength and the strength of your priestly house, so that no-one in it will reach old age, 32 and you will see distress in my dwelling. Although good will be done to Israel, no-one in your family line will ever reach old age. 33 Every one of you that I do not cut off from serving at my altar I will spare only to destroy your sight and sap your strength, and all your descendants will die in the prime of life. 34 ‘ “And what happens to your two sons, Hophni and Phinehas, will be a sign to you – they will both die on the same day. 35 I will raise up for myself a faithful priest, who will do according to what is in my heart and mind. I will firmly establish his priestly house, and they will minister before my anointed one always. 36 Then everyone left in your family line will come and bow down before him for a piece of silver and a loaf of bread and plead, ‘Appoint me to some priestly office so that I can have food to eat.’ ” ’

1 Ana s‑a rugat, zicând: „Mi se bucură inima în DOMNUL, cornul* îmi este înălțat în DOMNUL, iar gura mea este larg deschisă împotriva dușmanilor mei, căci mă bucur de izbăvirea Ta. 2 Nimeni nu este sfânt ca DOMNUL, căci nu este niciun Dumnezeu în afară de Tine, nu este stâncă precum Dumnezeul nostru. 3 Nu mai vorbiți cu atâta mândrie și să nu mai iasă aroganță din gura voastră, căci DOMNUL este un Dumnezeu al cunoașterii și Unul Care cântărește faptele. 4 Arcul celor viteji se înspăimântă, iar cei care se împiedică sunt încinși cu putere. 5 Cei care erau sătui se închiriază pentru pâine, iar cei care erau flămânzi încetează a mai flămânzi. Cea stearpă naște șapte fii, pe când cea care are mulți copii se ofilește. 6 DOMNUL dă la moarte și tot El aduce la viață; El coboară în Locuința Morților* și tot El ridică. 7 DOMNUL duce la sărăcie și tot El îmbogățește; El coboară și tot El înalță. 8 El îl ridică din praf pe cel sărac, și îl înalță din grămada de cenușă pe cel nevoiaș, ca să‑i așeze la un loc cu nobilii și să le dea drept moștenire un tron al slavei. Căci ai DOMNULUI sunt stâlpii pământului și pe ei a așezat El lumea. 9 El păzește pașii credincioșilor Săi, însă ticăloșii vor fi reduși la tăcere în întuneric, pentru că nu prin putere va învinge omul. 10 Dușmanii DOMNULUI vor fi zdrobiți; El va tuna din ceruri împotriva lor. DOMNUL va judeca marginile pământului, va da tărie împăratului Său și va înălța cornul unsului Său.“ 11 După aceea, Elkana a plecat acasă, la Rama, iar băiatul slujea DOMNULUI în prezența preotului Eli.

Ticăloșia fiilor lui Eli

12 Fiii lui Eli erau niște oameni de nimic*. Ei nu‑L cunoșteau pe DOMNUL. 13 Obiceiul preoților față de popor era acesta: slujitorul preotului venea, în timp ce se fierbea carnea, la fiecare om care își aducea jertfa și, ținând în mână o furculiță cu trei dinți, 14 o băga în tigaie, în cratiță, în cazan sau în oală, și tot ceea ce era apucat cu furculița, preotul lua pentru sine. În felul acesta făceau cu toți cei din Israel care veneau acolo, la Șilo. 15 Pe lângă aceasta, înainte de a arde grăsimea,* slujitorul preotului venea și îi spunea omului care jertfea: „Dă pentru preot carne de fript, căci el nu va lua de la tine carne fiartă, ci doar crudă!“ 16 Dacă omul îi răspundea: „Să ardem mai întâi grăsimea, iar după aceea vei lua atât cât dorești“, slujitorul îi spunea: „Chiar acum trebuie să dai! Dacă nu, voi lua cu forța!“ 17 Păcatul acestor tineri era foarte mare înaintea DOMNULUI, pentru că disprețuiau darurile de mâncare ale DOMNULUI. 18 Samuel însă slujea înaintea DOMNULUI; și copilul acesta era încins cu un efod de in. 19 Mama sa îi făcea în fiecare an câte o mantie mică pe care i‑o aducea atunci când se suia împreună cu soțul ei pentru a aduce jertfa anuală. 20 Eli binecuvânta pe Elkana și pe soția acestuia, zicând: „Să‑ți dea DOMNUL urmași* din femeia aceasta, în schimbul celui pe care ea l‑a oferit DOMNULUI.“ Apoi ei plecau acasă. 21 DOMNUL a cercetat‑o pe Ana, iar aceasta a rămas însărcinată și a născut trei fii și două fiice. Cât despre tânărul Samuel, el creștea în prezența DOMNULUI. 22 Eli era foarte bătrân. El a auzit tot ce făceau fiii lui cu întregul Israel și cum se culcau cu femeile care slujeau la intrarea Cortului Întâlnirii. 23 Eli le‑a zis: „Pentru ce faceți aceste lucruri? Am auzit despre faptele voastre rele de la întregul popor. 24 Nu, fiii mei! Nu este bine ceea ce aud zicându‑se despre voi în poporul DOMNULUI. 25 Dacă un om păcătuiește împotriva altui om, poate Dumnezeu îi va lua apărarea. Dar dacă un om păcătuiește împotriva DOMNULUI, cine va interveni pentru el?“ Dar ei n‑au ascultat de glasul tatălui lor, căci DOMNUL dorea să‑i omoare. 26 Băiatul Samuel însă continua să crească și era plăcut atât DOMNULUI, cât și oamenilor.

Vestirea pedepsei împotriva familiei lui Eli

27 Un om al lui Dumnezeu a venit la Eli și i‑a zis: „Așa vorbește DOMNUL: «Nu M‑am descoperit Eu familiei tatălui tău atunci când erau în Egipt, în Casa lui Faraon? 28 Nu l‑am ales pe el dintre toate semințiile lui Israel ca să fie preotul Meu, să se suie la altarul Meu, să ardă tămâia și să poarte efodul înaintea Mea? Nu am dat eu familiei tatălui tău toate jertfele mistuite de foc ale fiilor lui Israel? 29 De ce călcați voi în picioare jertfa și darul Meu de mâncare, pe care am poruncit să fie aduse în Locuința Mea și cum de i‑ai onorat pe fiii tăi mai mult decât pe Mine, îngrășându‑vă voi înșivă din partea aleasă a fiecărui dar de mâncare adus de poporul Meu, Israel?» 30 De aceea așa vorbește DOMNUL, Dumnezeul lui Israel: «Am promis cu privire la familia ta și la familia tatălui tău că vor umbla înaintea Mea pentru totdeauna. Acum însă, zice DOMNUL, departe de Mine lucrul acesta! Voi cinsti doar pe cei care Mă cinstesc, însă cei care Mă disprețuiesc vor fi disprețuiți. 31 Iată că vin zilele când voi reteza puterea ta și puterea familiei tatălui tău, astfel încât nu va mai fi niciun bătrân în familia ta. 32 Vei vedea necazul Locuinței Mele. Israel va avea parte de tot binele, însă în familia ta nu va mai fi niciodată vreun bătrân. 33 Fiecăruia dintre ai tăi, pe care nu‑l voi nimici de la altarul Meu, i se vor topi ochii și i se va întrista sufletul. Toți ceilalți din casa ta vor muri în floarea vârstei*. 34 Și acesta va fi pentru tine semnul care va veni asupra celor doi fii ai tăi, asupra lui Hofni și Fineas: amândoi vor muri într‑o singură zi. 35 Eu Îmi voi ridica un preot credincios care va lucra după inima Mea și după sufletul Meu. Eu Însumi îi voi ridica acestuia o Casă trainică, iar el va umbla înaintea unsului Meu pentru totdeauna. 36 Oricine va mai rămâne din familia ta va veni să se plece înaintea lui pentru o bucățică de argint* și pentru o fărâmă de pâine și va zice: ‘Pune‑mă, te rog, într‑una din slujbele preoțești, ca să mănânc și eu o bucată de pâine.’»“
