The demand for a sign

1 The Pharisees and Sadducees came to Jesus and tested him by asking him to show them a sign from heaven. 2 He replied, ‘When evening comes, you say, “It will be fair weather, for the sky is red,” 3 and in the morning, “Today it will be stormy, for the sky is red and overcast.” You know how to interpret the appearance of the sky, but you cannot interpret the signs of the times.* 4 A wicked and adulterous generation looks for a sign, but none will be given it except the sign of Jonah.’ Jesus then left them and went away.

The yeast of the Pharisees and Sadducees

5 When they went across the lake, the disciples forgot to take bread. 6 ‘Be careful,’ Jesus said to them. ‘Be on your guard against the yeast of the Pharisees and Sadducees.’ 7 They discussed this among themselves and said, ‘It is because we didn’t bring any bread.’ 8 Aware of their discussion, Jesus asked, ‘You of little faith, why are you talking among yourselves about having no bread? 9 Do you still not understand? Don’t you remember the five loaves for the five thousand, and how many basketfuls you gathered? 10 Or the seven loaves for the four thousand, and how many basketfuls you gathered? 11 How is it you don’t understand that I was not talking to you about bread? But be on your guard against the yeast of the Pharisees and Sadducees.’ 12 Then they understood that he was not telling them to guard against the yeast used in bread, but against the teaching of the Pharisees and Sadducees.

Peter declares that Jesus is the Messiah

13 When Jesus came to the region of Caesarea Philippi, he asked his disciples, ‘Who do people say the Son of Man is?’ 14 They replied, ‘Some say John the Baptist; others say Elijah; and still others, Jeremiah or one of the prophets.’ 15 ‘But what about you?’ he asked. ‘Who do you say I am?’ 16 Simon Peter answered, ‘You are the Messiah, the Son of the living God.’ 17 Jesus replied, ‘Blessed are you, Simon son of Jonah, for this was not revealed to you by flesh and blood, but by my Father in heaven. 18 And I tell you that you are Peter,* and on this rock I will build my church, and the gates of Hades* will not overcome it. 19 I will give you the keys of the kingdom of heaven; whatever you bind on earth will be* bound in heaven, and whatever you loose on earth will be* loosed in heaven.’ 20 Then he ordered his disciples not to tell anyone that he was the Messiah.

Jesus predicts his death

21 From that time on Jesus began to explain to his disciples that he must go to Jerusalem and suffer many things at the hands of the elders, the chief priests and the teachers of the law, and that he must be killed and on the third day be raised to life. 22 Peter took him aside and began to rebuke him. ‘Never, Lord!’ he said. ‘This shall never happen to you!’ 23 Jesus turned and said to Peter, ‘Get behind me, Satan! You are a stumbling-block to me; you do not have in mind the concerns of God, but merely human concerns.’ 24 Then Jesus said to his disciples, ‘Whoever wants to be my disciple must deny themselves and take up their cross and follow me. 25 For whoever wants to save their life* will lose it, but whoever loses their life for me will find it. 26 What good will it be for someone to gain the whole world, yet forfeit their soul? Or what can anyone give in exchange for their soul? 27 For the Son of Man is going to come in his Father’s glory with his angels, and then he will reward each person according to what they have done. 28 ‘Truly I tell you, some who are standing here will not taste death before they see the Son of Man coming in his kingdom.’

Die Gegner fordern erneut einen Beweis

1 Die Pharisäer und Sadduzäer kamen zu Jesus, um ihn auf die Probe zu stellen. Sie verlangten von ihm ein Zeichen vom Himmel als Beweis dafür, dass er wirklich von Gott beauftragt sei.* 2 Aber Jesus antwortete ihnen:* »Wenn der Abendhimmel rot ist, dann sagt ihr: ›Morgen gibt es schönes Wetter.‹ 3 Und wenn der Morgenhimmel rot und trübe ist, sagt ihr: ›Heute gibt es Sturm.‹ Ihr könnt also das Aussehen des Himmels beurteilen und schließt daraus, wie das Wetter wird. Warum versteht ihr dann nicht auch, was die Ereignisse dieser Zeit ankündigen? 4 Diese böse Generation, die von Gott nichts wissen will,* verlangt einen Beweis; aber es wird ihr keiner gegeben werden – ausgenommen das Wunder, das am Propheten Jona geschah: Den Beweis werden sie bekommen!« Damit ließ er sie stehen und ging weg.

Unverständige Jünger

5 Als die Jünger am anderen Seeufer ankamen, hatten sie vergessen, Brot mitzunehmen. 6 Jesus sagte zu ihnen: »Nehmt euch in Acht vor dem Sauerteig der Pharisäer und Sadduzäer!« 7 Da sagten die Jünger zueinander: »Wir haben kein Brot mitgenommen!« 8 Jesus hörte es und sagte: »Was macht ihr euch Gedanken darüber, dass ihr kein Brot habt? Habt ihr so wenig Vertrauen? 9 Habt ihr immer noch nichts begriffen? Habt ihr vergessen, wie ich die fünf Brote unter fünftausend Menschen ausgeteilt habe? Und wie viele Körbe mit Resten ihr da eingesammelt habt? 10 Und dann die sieben Brote unter die viertausend – wie viele Körbe mit Resten waren es da? 11 Ihr müsstet doch merken, dass ich nicht von Broten spreche. Ich spreche vom Sauerteig der Pharisäer und Sadduzäer; davor nehmt euch in Acht!« 12 Da endlich verstanden sie, dass er nicht den Sauerteig gemeint hatte, der zum Brotbacken verwendet wird, sondern die Lehre der Pharisäer und Sadduzäer.

Du bist Christus! – Du bist Petrus!

13 Als Jesus in die Gegend der Stadt Cäsarea Philippi kam, fragte er seine Jünger: »Für wen halten die Leute den Menschensohn?« 14 Die Jünger gaben zur Antwort: »Die einen halten dich für den wiederauferstandenen Täufer Johannes, andere halten dich für den wiedergekommenen Elija, und wieder andere meinen, du seist Jeremia oder sonst einer von den alten Propheten.« 15 »Und ihr«, wollte Jesus wissen, »für wen haltet ihr mich?« 16 Da sagte Simon Petrus: »Du bist Christus, der versprochene Retter,* der Sohn des lebendigen Gottes!« 17 Darauf sagte Jesus zu ihm: »Du darfst dich freuen, Simon, Sohn von Johannes,* denn diese Erkenntnis hast du nicht aus dir selbst; mein Vater im Himmel hat sie dir gegeben. 18 Darum sage ich dir: Du bist Petrus; und auf diesem Felsen werde ich meine Gemeinde bauen! Nicht einmal die Macht des Todes* wird sie vernichten können. 19 Ich werde dir die Schlüssel zu Gottes neuer Welt* geben. Was du hier auf der Erde für verbindlich erklären wirst, das wird auch vor Gott verbindlich sein; und was du hier für nicht verbindlich erklären wirst, das wird auch vor Gott nicht verbindlich sein.«* 20 Dann schärfte Jesus den Jüngern ein: »Sagt niemand, dass ich der versprochene Retter* bin!«

Jesus kündigt zum ersten Mal seinen Tod an

21 Von da an begann Jesus seinen Jüngern zu eröffnen, was Gott mit ihm vorhatte: dass er nach Jerusalem gehen musste, dass er dort von den Ratsältesten, den führenden Priestern und den Gesetzeslehrern vieles erleiden musste, dass er getötet werden und am dritten Tag auferweckt werden musste. 22 Da nahm Petrus ihn beiseite, fuhr ihn an und sagte: »Das möge Gott verhüten, Herr; nie darf dir so etwas zustoßen!« 23 Aber Jesus wandte sich von ihm ab und sagte: »Geh weg! Hinter mich, an deinen Platz,* du Satan! Du willst mich von meinem Weg abbringen! Deine Gedanken stammen nicht von Gott, sie sind typisch menschlich.«

Jesus folgen heißt: ihm das Kreuz nachtragen

24 Dann sagte Jesus zu seinen Jüngern: »Wer mir folgen will, muss sich und seine Wünsche aufgeben, sein Kreuz auf sich nehmen und auf meinem Weg hinter mir hergehen. 25 Denn wer sein Leben retten will, wird es verlieren. Aber wer sein Leben um meinetwillen verliert, wird es gewinnen. 26 Was hat ein Mensch davon, wenn er die ganze Welt gewinnt, aber zuletzt sein Leben verliert? Womit will er es dann zurückkaufen? 27 Denn der Menschensohn wird in der Herrlichkeit seines Vaters mit seinen Engeln kommen. Dann wird er allen vergelten nach ihrem Tun. 28 Ich versichere euch: Einige von euch, die jetzt hier stehen, werden noch zu ihren Lebzeiten sehen, wie der Menschensohn seine Herrschaft antritt.«
