That which defiles

1 Then some Pharisees and teachers of the law came to Jesus from Jerusalem and asked, 2 ‘Why do your disciples break the tradition of the elders? They don’t wash their hands before they eat!’ 3 Jesus replied, ‘And why do you break the command of God for the sake of your tradition? 4 For God said, “Honour your father and mother”* and “Anyone who curses their father or mother is to be put to death.”* 5 But you say that if anyone declares that what might have been used to help their father or mother is “devoted to God,” 6 they are not to “honour their father or mother” with it. Thus you nullify the word of God for the sake of your tradition. 7 You hypocrites! Isaiah was right when he prophesied about you: 8 ‘ “These people honour me with their lips, but their hearts are far from me. 9 They worship me in vain; their teachings are merely human rules.” ’ 10 Jesus called the crowd to him and said, ‘Listen and understand. 11 What goes into someone’s mouth does not defile them, but what comes out of their mouth, that is what defiles them.’ 12 Then the disciples came to him and asked, ‘Do you know that the Pharisees were offended when they heard this?’ 13 He replied, ‘Every plant that my heavenly Father has not planted will be pulled up by the roots. 14 Leave them; they are blind guides.* If the blind lead the blind, both will fall into a pit.’ 15 Peter said, ‘Explain the parable to us.’ 16 ‘Are you still so dull?’ Jesus asked them. 17 ‘Don’t you see that whatever enters the mouth goes into the stomach and then out of the body? 18 But the things that come out of a person’s mouth come from the heart, and these defile them. 19 For out of the heart come evil thoughts – murder, adultery, sexual immorality, theft, false testimony, slander. 20 These are what defile a person; but eating with unwashed hands does not defile them.’

The faith of a Canaanite woman

21 Leaving that place, Jesus withdrew to the region of Tyre and Sidon. 22 A Canaanite woman from that vicinity came to him, crying out, ‘Lord, Son of David, have mercy on me! My daughter is demon-possessed and suffering terribly.’ 23 Jesus did not answer a word. So his disciples came to him and urged him, ‘Send her away, for she keeps crying out after us.’ 24 He answered, ‘I was sent only to the lost sheep of Israel.’ 25 The woman came and knelt before him. ‘Lord, help me!’ she said. 26 He replied, ‘It is not right to take the children’s bread and toss it to the dogs.’ 27 ‘Yes it is, Lord,’ she said. ‘Even the dogs eat the crumbs that fall from their master’s table.’ 28 Then Jesus said to her, ‘Woman, you have great faith! Your request is granted.’ And her daughter was healed at that moment.

Jesus feeds the four thousand

29 Jesus left there and went along the Sea of Galilee. Then he went up on a mountainside and sat down. 30 Great crowds came to him, bringing the lame, the blind, the crippled, the mute and many others, and laid them at his feet; and he healed them. 31 The people were amazed when they saw the mute speaking, the crippled made well, the lame walking and the blind seeing. And they praised the God of Israel. 32 Jesus called his disciples to him and said, ‘I have compassion for these people; they have already been with me three days and have nothing to eat. I do not want to send them away hungry, or they may collapse on the way.’ 33 His disciples answered, ‘Where could we get enough bread in this remote place to feed such a crowd?’ 34 ‘How many loaves do you have?’ Jesus asked. ‘Seven,’ they replied, ‘and a few small fish.’ 35 He told the crowd to sit down on the ground. 36 Then he took the seven loaves and the fish, and when he had given thanks, he broke them and gave them to the disciples, and they in turn to the people. 37 They all ate and were satisfied. Afterwards the disciples picked up seven basketfuls of broken pieces that were left over. 38 The number of those who ate was four thousand men, besides women and children. 39 After Jesus had sent the crowd away, he got into the boat and went to the vicinity of Magadan.

Falscher Gottesdienst

1 Damals kamen Pharisäer und Gesetzeslehrer aus Jerusalem zu Jesus und fragten ihn: 2 »Warum übertreten deine Jünger die Vorschriften, die von den früheren Gesetzeslehrern aufgestellt und dann weiterüberliefert worden sind? Warum waschen sie sich nicht die Hände vor dem Essen?«* 3 Jesus antwortete ihnen: »Und warum übertretet ihr das Gebot Gottes euren überlieferten Vorschriften zuliebe? 4 Gott hat gesagt: ›Ehre deinen Vater und deine Mutter!‹, und: ›Wer zu seinem Vater oder seiner Mutter etwas Schändliches sagt, wird mit dem Tod bestraft.‹ 5 Ihr dagegen behauptet: ›Wenn jemand zu seinem Vater oder seiner Mutter sagt: Was ihr von mir bekommen müsstet, ist für Gott bestimmt* 6 – dann darf er seine Eltern nicht mehr damit ehren.‹ So habt ihr das Wort Gottes außer Kraft gesetzt mit euren Überlieferungen. 7 Ihr Scheinheiligen, treffend hat der Prophet Jesaja euch im Voraus beschrieben: 8 ›Dieses Volk ehrt mich nur mit Worten, sagt Gott, aber mit dem Herzen ist es weit weg von mir. 9 Ihr ganzer Gottesdienst ist sinnlos, denn sie lehren nur Gebote, die sich Menschen ausgedacht haben.‹«

Was unrein macht

10 Jesus rief die Menge hinzu und sagte: »Hört zu und versteht! 11 Nicht das macht den Menschen unrein, was er durch den Mund in sich aufnimmt, sondern das, was aus seinem Mund herauskommt!« 12 Hinterher traten seine Jünger zu ihm und sagten: »Weißt du, dass die Pharisäer empört waren, weil du das gesagt hast?« 13 Jesus antwortete: »Alles, was mein Vater im Himmel nicht selbst gepflanzt hat, wird ausgerissen werden. 14 Lasst sie reden! Sie wollen Blinde führen und sind selbst blind. Wenn ein Blinder den andern führt, fallen beide in die Grube.« 15 Da sagte Petrus: »Erkläre uns doch, was du mit dem Wort von der Unreinheit gemeint hast!« 16 »Habt auch ihr noch nichts verstanden?«, erwiderte Jesus. 17 »Begreift ihr nicht, dass alles, was durch den Mund aufgenommen wird, in den Magen gelangt und dann vom Körper wieder ausgeschieden wird? 18 Was aber aus dem Mund herauskommt, kommt aus dem Herzen, und das macht den Menschen unrein. 19 Denn aus dem Herzen kommen die bösen Gedanken und mit ihnen Mord, Ehebruch, Unzucht, Diebstahl, falsche Zeugenaussagen und Beleidigungen. 20 Das ist es, was den Menschen unrein macht, aber nicht, dass er es unterlässt, sich vor dem Essen die Hände zu waschen.«

Das Vertrauen einer nicht jüdischen Frau

21 Jesus verließ die Gegend und zog sich in das Gebiet von Tyrus und Sidon zurück. 22 Eine kanaanitische* Frau, die dort wohnte, kam zu ihm und rief: »Herr, du Sohn Davids, hab Erbarmen mit mir! Meine Tochter wird von einem bösen Geist sehr geplagt.« 23 Aber Jesus gab ihr keine Antwort. Schließlich drängten ihn die Jünger: »Sieh zu, dass du sie loswirst;* sie schreit ja hinter uns her!« 24 Aber Jesus sagte: »Ich bin nur zum Volk Israel, dieser Herde von verlorenen Schafen, gesandt worden.« 25 Da warf die Frau sich vor Jesus nieder und sagte: »Hilf mir doch, Herr!« 26 Er antwortete: »Es ist nicht recht, den Kindern das Brot wegzunehmen und es den Hunden vorzuwerfen.« 27 »Gewiss, Herr«, sagte sie; »aber die Hunde bekommen doch wenigstens die Brocken, die vom Tisch ihrer Herren herunterfallen.« 28 Da sagte Jesus zu ihr: »Du hast ein großes Vertrauen, Frau! Was du willst, soll geschehen.« Im selben Augenblick wurde ihre Tochter gesund.

Jesus heilt viele Menschen und macht über viertausend satt

29 Jesus ging von dort weg und kam an den See von Galiläa. Er stieg auf einen Berg* und setzte sich. 30 Eine große Menschenmenge kam zu ihm mit Gelähmten, Verkrüppelten, Blinden, Stummen und vielen anderen Kranken. Die Leute legten sie vor seinen Füßen nieder und er heilte sie. 31 Alle staunten, als sie sahen, dass die Stummen sprachen, die Verkrüppelten wiederhergestellt wurden, die Gelähmten umherliefen und die Blinden sehen konnten. Laut priesen sie den Gott Israels. 32 Danach rief Jesus seine Jünger zu sich und sagte: »Die Menschen tun mir leid. Seit drei Tagen sind sie hier bei mir und haben nichts zu essen. Ich will sie jetzt nicht hungrig nach Hause schicken, sie könnten sonst unterwegs zusammenbrechen.« 33 Aber die Jünger sagten: »Wo sollen wir hier in dieser unbewohnten Gegend genug Brot bekommen, um so viele satt zu machen?« 34 »Wie viele Brote habt ihr?«, fragte Jesus, und sie antworteten: »Sieben, und noch ein paar kleine Fische.« 35 Da forderte er die Leute auf, sich auf die Erde zu setzen. 36 Er nahm die sieben Brote und die Fische und sprach darüber das Dankgebet. Dann brach er die Brote in Stücke und gab sie seinen Jüngern; und die Jünger verteilten sie an die Menge. 37 Alle aßen und wurden satt, und sie füllten sogar noch sieben Körbe mit dem Brot, das übrig blieb. 38 Viertausend Männer hatten an der Mahlzeit teilgenommen, dazu noch Frauen und Kinder. 39 Dann schickte Jesus die Leute nach Hause, stieg in ein Boot und fuhr in das Gebiet von Magadan.
