Jesus washes his disciples’ feet

1 It was just before the Passover Festival. Jesus knew that the hour had come for him to leave this world and go to the Father. Having loved his own who were in the world, he loved them to the end. 2 The evening meal was in progress, and the devil had already prompted Judas, the son of Simon Iscariot, to betray Jesus. 3 Jesus knew that the Father had put all things under his power, and that he had come from God and was returning to God; 4 so he got up from the meal, took off his outer clothing, and wrapped a towel round his waist. 5 After that, he poured water into a basin and began to wash his disciples’ feet, drying them with the towel that was wrapped round him. 6 He came to Simon Peter, who said to him, ‘Lord, are you going to wash my feet?’ 7 Jesus replied, ‘You do not realise now what I am doing, but later you will understand.’ 8 ‘No,’ said Peter, ‘you shall never wash my feet.’ Jesus answered, ‘Unless I wash you, you have no part with me.’ 9 ‘Then, Lord,’ Simon Peter replied, ‘not just my feet but my hands and my head as well!’ 10 Jesus answered, ‘Those who have had a bath need only to wash their feet; their whole body is clean. And you are clean, though not every one of you.’ 11 For he knew who was going to betray him, and that was why he said not every one was clean. 12 When he had finished washing their feet, he put on his clothes and returned to his place. ‘Do you understand what I have done for you?’ he asked them. 13 ‘You call me “Teacher” and “Lord”, and rightly so, for that is what I am. 14 Now that I, your Lord and Teacher, have washed your feet, you also should wash one another’s feet. 15 I have set you an example that you should do as I have done for you. 16 Very truly I tell you, no servant is greater than his master, nor is a messenger greater than the one who sent him. 17 Now that you know these things, you will be blessed if you do them.

Jesus predicts his betrayal

18 ‘I am not referring to all of you; I know those I have chosen. But this is to fulfil this passage of Scripture: “He who shared my bread has turned* against me.” 19 ‘I am telling you now before it happens, so that when it does happen you will believe that I am who I am. 20 Very truly I tell you, whoever accepts anyone I send accepts me; and whoever accepts me accepts the one who sent me.’ 21 After he had said this, Jesus was troubled in spirit and testified, ‘Very truly I tell you, one of you is going to betray me.’ 22 His disciples stared at one another, at a loss to know which of them he meant. 23 One of them, the disciple whom Jesus loved, was reclining next to him. 24 Simon Peter motioned to this disciple and said, ‘Ask him which one he means.’ 25 Leaning back against Jesus, he asked him, ‘Lord, who is it?’ 26 Jesus answered, ‘It is the one to whom I will give this piece of bread when I have dipped it in the dish.’ Then, dipping the piece of bread, he gave it to Judas, the son of Simon Iscariot. 27 As soon as Judas took the bread, Satan entered into him. So Jesus told him, ‘What you are about to do, do quickly.’ 28 But no-one at the meal understood why Jesus said this to him. 29 Since Judas had charge of the money, some thought Jesus was telling him to buy what was needed for the festival, or to give something to the poor. 30 As soon as Judas had taken the bread, he went out. And it was night.

Jesus predicts Peter’s denial

31 When he was gone, Jesus said, ‘Now the Son of Man is glorified and God is glorified in him. 32 If God is glorified in him,* God will glorify the Son in himself, and will glorify him at once. 33 ‘My children, I will be with you only a little longer. You will look for me, and just as I told the Jews, so I tell you now: where I am going, you cannot come. 34 ‘A new command I give you: love one another. As I have loved you, so you must love one another. 35 By this everyone will know that you are my disciples, if you love one another.’ 36 Simon Peter asked him, ‘Lord, where are you going?’ Jesus replied, ‘Where I am going, you cannot follow now, but you will follow later.’ 37 Peter asked, ‘Lord, why can’t I follow you now? I will lay down my life for you.’ 38 Then Jesus answered, ‘Will you really lay down your life for me? Very truly I tell you, before the cock crows, you will disown me three times!

Jesus wäscht seinen Jüngern die Füße

1 Das Passafest stand bevor. Jesus wusste, dass für ihn die Stunde gekommen war, diese Welt zu verlassen und zum Vater zu gehen. Er hatte die Menschen, die in der Welt zu ihm gehörten, immer geliebt. Jetzt gab er ihnen einen letzten und äußersten Beweis seiner Liebe. 2 Jesus aß mit seinen Jüngern zu Abend. Der Teufel hatte Judas, dem Sohn von Simon Iskariot, schon den Gedanken eingegeben, Jesus zu verraten. 3 Jesus wusste, dass der Vater ihm alles in die Hand gegeben hatte. Er wusste, dass er von Gott gekommen war und bald wieder zu Gott zurückkehren würde. 4 Da stand er vom Tisch auf, legte sein Obergewand ab, band sich ein Tuch um 5 und goss Wasser in eine Schüssel. Dann fing er an, seinen Jüngern die Füße zu waschen und sie mit dem Tuch abzutrocknen. 6 Als er zu Simon Petrus kam, sagte der: »Du, Herr, willst mir die Füße waschen?« 7 Jesus antwortete ihm: »Was ich tue, kannst du jetzt noch nicht verstehen, aber später wirst du es begreifen.« 8 Petrus widersetzte sich: »Niemals sollst du mir die Füße waschen, in Ewigkeit nicht!« Jesus antwortete: »Wenn ich dir nicht die Füße wasche, hast du keinen Anteil an mir und an dem, was ich bringe.« 9 Da sagte Simon Petrus: »Herr, dann nicht nur die Füße, sondern auch die Hände und den Kopf!« 10 Jesus erwiderte: »Wer vorher gebadet hat, ist am ganzen Körper rein und braucht sich nur noch die Füße zu waschen. Ihr seid alle rein – bis auf einen.« 11 Jesus wusste, wer ihn verraten würde. Deshalb sagte er: »Ihr seid alle rein, bis auf einen.« 12 Nachdem Jesus ihnen die Füße gewaschen hatte, zog er sein Oberkleid wieder an und kehrte zu seinem Platz am Tisch zurück. »Begreift ihr, was ich eben getan habe?«, fragte er sie. 13 »Ihr nennt mich Lehrer und Herr. Ihr habt recht, das bin ich. 14 Ich bin euer Herr und Lehrer, und doch habe ich euch soeben die Füße gewaschen. So sollt auch ihr euch gegenseitig die Füße waschen. 15 Ich habe euch ein Beispiel gegeben, damit auch ihr so handelt, wie ich an euch gehandelt habe. 16 Amen, ich versichere euch: Ein Diener ist nicht größer als sein Herr und ein Bote nicht größer als sein Auftraggeber. 17 Das wisst ihr jetzt; freuen dürft ihr euch, wenn ihr auch danach handelt! 18 Ich meine nicht euch alle. Ich weiß, wen ich erwählt habe; aber was die Heiligen Schriften vorausgesagt haben, muss eintreffen: ›Einer, der mein Brot isst, tritt nach mir.‹ 19 Ich sage euch dies jetzt, bevor es eintrifft, damit ihr nicht an mir irrewerdet, wenn es dann so kommt, sondern im Glauben daran festhaltet: Ich bin der, an dem sich alles entscheidet.* 20 Amen, ich versichere euch: Wer einen Menschen aufnimmt, den ich gesandt habe, nimmt mich auf. Und wer mich aufnimmt, nimmt den auf, der mich gesandt hat.«

Jesus und sein Verräter

21 Als Jesus das gesagt hatte, wurde er sehr traurig und sagte ihnen ganz offen: »Amen, ich versichere euch: Einer von euch wird mich verraten.« 22 Seine Jünger sahen sich ratlos an und fragten sich, wen er meinte. 23 Der Jünger, den Jesus besonders lieb hatte, saß neben ihm.* 24 Simon Petrus gab ihm durch ein Zeichen zu verstehen: »Frag du ihn, von wem er spricht!« 25 Da rückte er näher an Jesus heran und fragte: »Herr, wer ist es?« 26 Jesus sagte zu ihm: »Ich werde ein Stück Brot in die Schüssel tauchen, und wem ich es gebe, der ist es.« Er nahm ein Stück Brot, tauchte es ein und gab es Judas, dem Sohn von Simon Iskariot. 27 Sobald Judas das Brot genommen hatte, nahm der Satan ihn in Besitz. Jesus sagte zu ihm: »Beeile dich und tu, was du tun musst!« 28 Keiner von den Übrigen am Tisch begriff, was Jesus ihm da gesagt hatte. 29 Weil Judas das Geld verwaltete, dachten manche, Jesus habe ihn beauftragt, die nötigen Einkäufe für das Fest zu machen, oder er habe ihn angewiesen, den Armen etwas zu geben. 30 Nachdem Judas das Stück Brot gegessen hatte, ging er sofort hinaus. Es war Nacht.

Das neue Gebot

31 Als Judas gegangen war, sagte Jesus: »Jetzt gelangt der Menschensohn zu seiner Herrlichkeit, und durch ihn wird die Herrlichkeit Gottes offenbar. 32 Wenn aber der Menschensohn die Herrlichkeit Gottes sichtbar gemacht hat, dann wird Gott ihm dafür auch seine eigene Herrlichkeit schenken. Und das wird bald geschehen. 33 Ich bin nicht mehr lange bei euch, meine Kinder. Ihr werdet mich suchen; aber ich muss euch jetzt dasselbe sagen, was ich früher schon den anderen* gesagt habe: Wo ich hingehe, dorthin könnt ihr nicht kommen. 34 Ich gebe euch jetzt ein neues Gebot: Ihr sollt einander lieben! Genauso wie ich euch geliebt habe, sollt ihr einander lieben! 35 An eurer Liebe zueinander werden alle erkennen, dass ihr meine Jünger seid.«

Jesus und Petrus

36 »Herr, wohin willst du gehen?«, fragte ihn Simon Petrus. Jesus antwortete: »Wo ich hingehe, dorthin kannst du mir jetzt nicht folgen, aber später wirst du nachkommen.« 37 »Herr, warum kann ich jetzt nicht mitkommen?«, fragte Petrus. »Ich bin bereit, für dich zu sterben!« 38 »Für mich sterben?«, erwiderte Jesus. »Amen, ich versichere dir: Bevor der Hahn kräht, wirst du mich dreimal verleugnen und behaupten, dass du mich nicht kennst.«
