1After the Philistines had captured the ark of God, they took it from Ebenezer to Ashdod.2Then they carried the ark into Dagon’s temple and set it beside Dagon.3When the people of Ashdod rose early the next day, there was Dagon, fallen on his face on the ground before the ark of the Lord! They took Dagon and put him back in his place.4But the following morning when they rose, there was Dagon, fallen on his face on the ground before the ark of the Lord! His head and hands had been broken off and were lying on the threshold; only his body remained.5That is why to this day neither the priests of Dagon nor any others who enter Dagon’s temple at Ashdod step on the threshold.6The Lord’s hand was heavy on the people of Ashdod and its vicinity; he brought devastation on them and afflicted them with tumours.*7When the people of Ashdod saw what was happening, they said, ‘The ark of the god of Israel must not stay here with us, because his hand is heavy on us and on Dagon our god.’8So they called together all the rulers of the Philistines and asked them, ‘What shall we do with the ark of the god of Israel?’ They answered, ‘Let the ark of the god of Israel be moved to Gath.’ So they moved the ark of the God of Israel.9But after they had moved it, the Lord’s hand was against that city, throwing it into a great panic. He afflicted the people of the city, both young and old, with an outbreak of tumours.*10So they sent the ark of God to Ekron. As the ark of God was entering Ekron, the people of Ekron cried out, ‘They have brought the ark of the god of Israel round to us to kill us and our people.’11So they called together all the rulers of the Philistines and said, ‘Send the ark of the god of Israel away; let it go back to its own place, or it* will kill us and our people.’ For death had filled the city with panic; God’s hand was very heavy on it.12Those who did not die were afflicted with tumours, and the outcry of the city went up to heaven.

Die Bundeslade bringt den Philistern kein Glück
1Die Philister brachten die Bundeslade, die sie erbeutet hatten, von Eben-Eser nach Aschdod2in den Tempel ihres Gottes Dagon und stellten sie neben dessen Standbild auf.3Als die Leute von Aschdod am nächsten Morgen in den Tempel kamen, war das Standbild Dagons umgestürzt und lag mit dem Gesicht zur Erde vor der Lade des HERRN. Sie stellten es wieder an seinen Platz;4doch auch am folgenden Morgen lag das Bild Dagons vor der Lade des HERRN am Boden. Aber nur der Rumpf war von Dagon übrig geblieben; sein Kopf und die beiden Hände waren abgebrochen und lagen auf der Türschwelle.5Deshalb treten die Priester Dagons und alle Besucher des Tempels bis heute nicht auf diese Schwelle.6Auch die Leute von Aschdod und den umliegenden Dörfern bekamen die Macht des HERRN zu spüren. Er strafte sie mit schmerzhaften Beulen.*7Da sagten sie: »Die Lade des Gottes Israels muss fort! Seine Hand lastet zu schwer auf uns und auch unseren Gott Dagon trifft sie hart.«8Sie riefen alle Philisterfürsten zusammen und fragten sie: »Was sollen wir mit der Lade des Gottes Israels machen?« »Bringt sie nach Gat«, rieten ihnen die versammelten Fürsten; und so wurde die Lade dorthin gebracht.9Aber als sie dort war, ließ der HERR auch die Leute von Gat seine Macht spüren. Er plagte sie alle, Vornehme wie Geringe, mit schmerzhaften Beulen, sodass eine gewaltige Panik entstand.10Da schickten sie die Lade Gottes weiter nach Ekron. Als sie dort ankam, schrien die Leute auf: »Jetzt haben sie die Lade des Gottes Israels zu uns gebracht! Sie wollen uns noch alle umbringen!«11Sie riefen die Philisterfürsten zusammen und forderten: »Schafft die Lade des Gottes Israels fort! Schickt sie wieder hin, wo sie hergekommen ist, sonst wird sie uns und unsere Familien noch umbringen.« In der Stadt herrschte Todesangst, denn alle ihre Bewohner hatten unter der strafenden Macht Gottes schwer zu leiden.12Auch wer mit dem Leben davonkam, war mit Beulen bedeckt und die Menschen schrien zum Himmel um Hilfe.
