The Philistines capture the ark

1 And Samuel’s word came to all Israel. Now the Israelites went out to fight against the Philistines. The Israelites camped at Ebenezer, and the Philistines at Aphek. 2 The Philistines deployed their forces to meet Israel, and as the battle spread, Israel was defeated by the Philistines, who killed about four thousand of them on the battlefield. 3 When the soldiers returned to camp, the elders of Israel asked, ‘Why did the Lord bring defeat on us today before the Philistines? Let us bring the ark of the Lord’s covenant from Shiloh, so that he may go with us and save us from the hand of our enemies.’ 4 So the people sent men to Shiloh, and they brought back the ark of the covenant of the Lord Almighty, who is enthroned between the cherubim. And Eli’s two sons, Hophni and Phinehas, were there with the ark of the covenant of God. 5 When the ark of the Lord’s covenant came into the camp, all Israel raised such a great shout that the ground shook. 6 Hearing the uproar, the Philistines asked, ‘What’s all this shouting in the Hebrew camp?’ When they learned that the ark of the Lord had come into the camp, 7 the Philistines were afraid. ‘A god has* come into the camp,’ they said. ‘Oh no! Nothing like this has happened before. 8 We’re doomed! Who will deliver us from the hand of these mighty gods? They are the gods who struck the Egyptians with all kinds of plagues in the wilderness. 9 Be strong, Philistines! Be men, or you will be subject to the Hebrews, as they have been to you. Be men, and fight!’ 10 So the Philistines fought, and the Israelites were defeated and every man fled to his tent. The slaughter was very great; Israel lost thirty thousand foot soldiers. 11 The ark of God was captured, and Eli’s two sons, Hophni and Phinehas, died.

Death of Eli

12 That same day a Benjaminite ran from the battle line and went to Shiloh with his clothes torn and dust on his head. 13 When he arrived, there was Eli sitting on his chair by the side of the road, watching, because his heart feared for the ark of God. When the man entered the town and told what had happened, the whole town sent up a cry. 14 Eli heard the outcry and asked, ‘What is the meaning of this uproar?’ The man hurried over to Eli, 15 who was ninety-eight years old and whose eyes had failed so that he could not see. 16 He told Eli, ‘I have just come from the battle line; I fled from it this very day.’ Eli asked, ‘What happened, my son?’ 17 The man who brought the news replied, ‘Israel fled before the Philistines, and the army has suffered heavy losses. Also your two sons, Hophni and Phinehas, are dead, and the ark of God has been captured.’ 18 When he mentioned the ark of God, Eli fell backwards off his chair by the side of the gate. His neck was broken and he died, for he was an old man, and he was heavy. He had led* Israel for forty years. 19 His daughter-in-law, the wife of Phinehas, was pregnant and near the time of delivery. When she heard the news that the ark of God had been captured and that her father-in-law and her husband were dead, she went into labour and gave birth, but was overcome by her labour pains. 20 As she was dying, the women attending her said, ‘Don’t despair; you have given birth to a son.’ But she did not respond or pay any attention. 21 She named the boy Ichabod,* saying, ‘The Glory has departed from Israel’ – because of the capture of the ark of God and the deaths of her father-in-law and her husband. 22 She said, ‘The Glory has departed from Israel, for the ark of God has been captured.’

Gottes Strafe ist unabwendbar

1 In ganz Israel hörte man auf Samuel. Die Israeliten zogen in den Kampf gegen die Philister. Ihr eigenes Lager war bei Eben-Eser, das Lager der Philister bei Afek. 2 Die Philister griffen an, und nach einem langen und zähen Kampf gelang es ihnen, die Israeliten zu schlagen. Von diesen wurden etwa 4000 Mann im Kampf getötet. 3 Als das Heer geschlagen ins Lager zurückkam, fragten sich die Ältesten des Volkes: »Warum hat der HERR das zugelassen? Warum konnten uns die Philister heute besiegen?« Sie berieten sich und beschlossen: »Wir wollen nach Schilo senden und die Bundeslade ins Lager holen! Dann wird der HERR mitten unter uns sein und uns gegen unsere Feinde helfen.« 4 Sie schickten einige Männer nach Schilo, um die Lade zu holen, auf der der HERR, der Herrscher der Welt,* unsichtbar über den Kerubim thront. Die Priester Hofni und Pinhas, die Söhne von Eli, begleiteten die Lade. 5 Als die Lade des HERRN ins Lager kam, brach unter den Israeliten ein solcher Jubelsturm los, dass davon die Erde dröhnte. 6 Der Lärm drang bis zu den Philistern. »Was ist das für ein lauter Jubel im Lager der Hebräer?«, fragten sie einander. Als sie erfuhren, dass die Lade des HERRN im Lager Israels angekommen war, 7 bekamen sie Angst. »Jetzt sind wir verloren!«, sagten sie. »Ihr Gott ist zu ihnen ins Lager gekommen. Das hat es noch nie gegeben. 8 Wer kann uns vor solch einem mächtigen Gott schützen? Das ist doch derselbe Gott, der die Ägypter in der Wüste vernichtet hat!« 9 Aber ihre Anführer riefen ihnen zu:* »Jetzt gilt es! Seid mutig, Philister, und kämpft wie Männer! Sonst werden die Hebräer euch zur Fronarbeit zwingen, so wie ihr es bisher mit ihnen gemacht habt. Zeigt, dass ihr Männer seid, und kämpft!« 10 Es kam zur Schlacht und die Israeliten erlitten eine schwere Niederlage. Das Heer löste sich auf und jeder floh nach Hause. 30000 israelitische Männer blieben tot auf dem Schlachtfeld. 11 Auch Hofni und Pinhas, die Söhne von Eli, fanden den Tod. Die Lade Gottes aber nahmen die Philister als Beute mit.

Der Schock über den Verlust der Bundeslade

12 Ein Mann aus dem Stamm Benjamin lief noch am selben Tag vom Ort der Schlacht bis nach Schilo. Zum Zeichen der Trauer hatte er seine Kleider zerrissen und sich Erde auf den Kopf gestreut. 13 Eli, jetzt 98 Jahre alt und so gut wie blind, saß eben auf seinem Stuhl und horchte angespannt die Straße hinunter; er machte sich Sorgen um die Lade Gottes. Als der Bote in die Stadt kam und berichtete, was geschehen war, schrien alle vor Entsetzen laut auf. »Was hat das zu bedeuten?«, fragte Eli. Da war auch schon der Bote bei ihm und sagte: 16 »Ich komme direkt aus der Schlacht, ich bin den Feinden entronnen.« »Was ist geschehen?«, fragte Eli, 17 und der Bote meldete: »Wir sind besiegt! Unser Heer ist geflohen. Deine beiden Söhne, Hofni und Pinhas, sind tot. Die Lade Gottes ist verloren!« 18 Als Eli vom Verlust der Lade hörte, fiel er rückwärts von seinem Stuhl am Eingang des Heiligtums. Er war so alt und schwer, dass er sich dabei das Genick brach und starb. Vierzig Jahre lang war er der Richter Israels gewesen. 19 Seine Schwiegertochter, die Frau des Priesters Pinhas, erwartete ein Kind und stand kurz vor der Entbindung. Als sie hörte, dass die Lade Gottes eine Beute der Philister geworden war und dass ihr Schwiegervater und ihr Mann den Tod gefunden hatten, überfielen sie die Wehen. Sie brach zusammen und gebar ein Kind, 20 aber die Geburt kostete sie das Leben. Während sie im Sterben lag, riefen ihr die Frauen, die ihr beistanden, zu: »Freu dich, du hast einen Sohn geboren!« Aber sie blieb teilnahmslos und gab keine Antwort. 21 Den Jungen nannte sie Ikabod (Fort ist die Herrlichkeit). Sie dachte dabei an den Verlust der Bundeslade und an den Tod ihres Schwiegervaters und ihres Mannes 22 und sagte: »Die Herrlichkeit Gottes ist fort aus Israel! Die Lade Gottes ist verloren!«
