1I was given a reed like a measuring rod and was told, ‘Go and measure the temple of God and the altar, with its worshippers.2But exclude the outer court; do not measure it, because it has been given to the Gentiles. They will trample on the holy city for 42 months.3And I will appoint my two witnesses, and they will prophesy for 1,260 days, clothed in sackcloth.’4They are ‘the two olive trees’ and the two lampstands, and ‘they stand before the Lord of the earth.’*5If anyone tries to harm them, fire comes from their mouths and devours their enemies. This is how anyone who wants to harm them must die.6They have power to shut up the heavens so that it will not rain during the time they are prophesying; and they have power to turn the waters into blood and to strike the earth with every kind of plague as often as they want.7Now when they have finished their testimony, the beast that comes up from the Abyss will attack them, and overpower and kill them.8Their bodies will lie in the public square of the great city – which is figuratively called Sodom and Egypt – where also their Lord was crucified.9For three and a half days some from every people, tribe, language and nation will gaze on their bodies and refuse them burial.10The inhabitants of the earth will gloat over them and will celebrate by sending each other gifts, because these two prophets had tormented those who live on the earth.11But after the three and a half days the breath* of life from God entered them, and they stood on their feet, and terror struck those who saw them.12Then they heard a loud voice from heaven saying to them, ‘Come up here.’ And they went up to heaven in a cloud, while their enemies looked on.13At that very hour there was a severe earthquake and a tenth of the city collapsed. Seven thousand people were killed in the earthquake, and the survivors were terrified and gave glory to the God of heaven.14The second woe has passed; the third woe is coming soon.
The seventh trumpet
15The seventh angel sounded his trumpet, and there were loud voices in heaven, which said: ‘The kingdom of the world has become the kingdom of our Lord and of his Messiah, and he will reign for ever and ever.’16And the twenty-four elders, who were seated on their thrones before God, fell on their faces and worshipped God,17saying: ‘We give thanks to you, Lord God Almighty, the One who is and who was, because you have taken your great power and have begun to reign.18The nations were angry, and your wrath has come. The time has come for judging the dead, and for rewarding your servants the prophets and your people who revere your name, both great and small – and for destroying those who destroy the earth.’19Then God’s temple in heaven was opened, and within his temple was seen the ark of his covenant. And there came flashes of lightning, rumblings, peals of thunder, an earthquake and a severe hailstorm.

Guds två representanter
1Nu gav man mig en måttstock som var som en stav och sa till mig: ”Gå och mät Guds tempel och altaret, och räkna dem som tillber där.*2Men templets yttre gård ska du inte mäta, för den har Gud överlämnat till dem som inte känner honom. Och de har makt att förvandla alla vattendrag till blod och sända alla slags plågor över jorden, så ofta de vill.7När de har slutfört sitt uppdrag att tala som Guds representanter, ska odjuret* som stiger upp från den bottenlösa avgrunden attackera och besegra och döda dem.8Deras lik ska sedan ligga på gatan i den stora stad som symboliskt kallas ”Sodom” och ”Egypten”, och där deras Herre också blev avrättad genom att spikas fast på ett kors.9Människor från alla länder och stammar och språk och folk ska under 3 ½ dag se deras kroppar ligga där, och de ska inte tillåta att dessa representanter begravs.10Men jordens invånare ska glädja sig över att Guds representanter äntligen är döda. De ska jubla och skicka presenter till varandra för att fira att de blivit av med dessa båda profeter som framfört Guds budskap och plågat dem så mycket.11Efter 3 ½ dag ska en livgivande ande från Gud komma in i hans representanter, och de ska ställa sig upp, och alla som ser dem ska bli skräckslagna.12Sedan ska en stark röst från himlen ropa till dem: ”Kom hit upp!” Och jag såg hur de for upp till himlen i ett moln, mitt framför ögonen på sina fiender.13I samma stund blev det en fruktansvärd jordbävning, som fick en tiondel av staden att störta samman. 7 000 människor dödades, och de som överlevde darrade av skräck och hyllade himlens Gud.14Den andra olyckan är över, men den tredje är snart på väg.
Den sjunde ängeln blåser i sin trumpet
15Just då blåste den sjunde ängeln i sin trumpet och starka röster hördes från himlen. De sa: ”Vår Gud och Kristus, den kung han lovade oss, har nu tagit makten över hela världen, och han ska regera i all evighet.”16Och de 24 himmelska ledarna, som satt på sina troner inför Gud, föll ner på sina ansikten och tillbad och sa:17”Vi tackar dig, Herre Gud, du som har allt makt, du som finns till och alltid har funnits, för att du har börjat utöva din stora makt och ska regera.18Folken rasade i vrede, men nu är det din tur att vara vred. Det är dags för de döda att dömas. Du ska belöna profeterna som tjänat dig genom att framföra ditt budskap, och de människor som tillhör dig. Ja, du ska belöna alla som lyder och tillber dig, både bland högt uppsatta personer och vanligt folk. Och du ska utplåna dem som förstör världen.”19Sedan öppnades Guds tempel i himlen, och där inne kunde man se förbundsarken*. Och det blixtrade och mullrade av åska, och det blev jordbävning och stora hagel föll.
