The new stone tablets

1 The LORD said to Moses, ‘Cut out two stone tablets that are just like the first ones. I will write on them the words that were on the first tablets, which you broke. 2 Be ready in the morning. Then come up on Mount Sinai. Meet with me there on top of the mountain. 3 No one must come with you. No one must be seen anywhere on the mountain. Not even the flocks and herds must be allowed to eat grass in front of the mountain.’ 4 So Moses carved out two stone tablets just like the first ones. Early in the morning he went up Mount Sinai. He carried the two stone tablets in his hands. He did as the LORD had commanded him to do. 5 Then the LORD came down in the cloud. He stood there with Moses and announced his name, the LORD. 6 As he passed in front of Moses, he called out. He said, ‘I am the LORD, the LORD. I am the God who is tender and kind. I am gracious. I am slow to get angry. I am faithful and full of love. 7 I continue to show my love to thousands of people. I forgive those who do evil. I forgive those who refuse to obey me. And I forgive those who sin. But I do not let guilty people go without punishing them. I cause the sins of the parents to affect their children, grandchildren and great-grandchildren.’ 8 Moses bowed down to the ground at once and worshipped. 9 ‘Lord’, he said, ‘if you are pleased with me, then go with us. Even though these people are stubborn, forgive the evil things we have done. Forgive our sin. And accept us as your people.’ 10 Then the LORD said, ‘I am making a covenant with you. I will do wonderful things in front of all your people. I will do amazing things that have never been done before in any nation in the whole world. The people you live among will see the things that I, the LORD, will do for you. And they will see how wonderful those things really are. 11 Obey what I command you today. I will drive out the Amorites, Canaanites, Hittites, Perizzites, Hivites and Jebusites to make room for you. 12 Be careful. Do not make a peace treaty with those who live in the land where you are going. They will be a trap to you. 13 Break down their altars. Smash their sacred stones. Cut down the poles they use to worship the female god named Asherah. 14 Do not worship any other god. The LORD is a jealous God. In fact, his name is Jealous. 15 ‘Be careful not to make a peace treaty with the people living in the land. They commit sin by offering sacrifices to their gods. They will invite you to eat their sacrifices, and you will do it. 16 You will choose some of their daughters as wives for your sons. And those daughters will commit sin by worshipping their gods. Then they will lead your sons to do the same thing. 17 ‘Do not make any statues of gods. 18 ‘Celebrate the Feast of Unleavened Bread. For seven days eat bread made without yeast, just as I commanded you. Do it at the appointed time in the month of Aviv. You came out of Egypt in that month. 19 ‘Every male animal born first to its mother belongs to me. That includes your livestock. It includes herds and flocks alike. 20 Sacrifice a lamb to buy back every male donkey born first to its mother. But if you do not buy the donkey back, break its neck. Buy back all your eldest sons. ‘You must not come to worship me with your hands empty. 21 ‘Do your work in six days. But you must rest on the seventh day. Even when you are ploughing your land or gathering your crops, you must rest on the seventh day. 22 ‘Celebrate the Feast of Weeks. Bring the first share of your wheat crop. Celebrate the Feast of Booths. Hold it in the autumn. 23 Three times a year all your men must come to worship me. I am your LORD and King, the God of Israel. 24 I will drive out nations ahead of you. I will increase your territory. Go up three times a year to worship me. While you are doing that, I will keep others from wanting to take any of your land for themselves. I am the LORD your God. 25 ‘Do not include anything made with yeast when you offer me the blood of a sacrifice. You must not keep any of the meat from the sacrifice of the Passover Feast until morning. 26 ‘Bring the best of the first share of your crops to the house of the LORD your God. ‘Do not cook a young goat in its mother’s milk.’ 27 Then the LORD said to Moses, ‘Write down the words I have spoken. I have made a covenant with you and with Israel in keeping with those words.’ 28 Moses was there with the LORD for 40 days and 40 nights. He didn’t eat any food or drink any water. The LORD wrote on the tablets the words of the covenant law. Those words are the Ten Commandments.

The face of Moses shines

29 Moses came down from Mount Sinai. He had the two tablets of the covenant law in his hands. His face was shining because he had spoken with the LORD. But he didn’t realise it. 30 Aaron and all the people of Israel saw Moses. His face was shining. So they were afraid to come near him. 31 But Moses called out to them. So Aaron and all the leaders of the community came to him. And Moses spoke to them. 32 After that, all the Israelites came near him. And he gave them all the commands the LORD had given him on Mount Sinai. 33 Moses finished speaking to them. Then he covered his face with a veil. 34 But when he would go to speak with the LORD, he would remove the veil. He would keep it off until he came out. Then he would tell the people what the LORD had commanded. 35 They would see that his face was shining. So Moses would cover his face with the veil again. He would keep it on until he went in again to speak with the LORD.

1 Il Signore disse a Mosè: «Taglia due tavole di pietra come le prime; e io scriverò sulle tavole le parole che erano sulle prime due tavole che hai spezzato. 2 Sii pronto domani mattina, e sali, al mattino, sul monte Sinai e presèntati a me sulla vetta del monte. 3 Nessuno salga con te, e non si veda alcuno su tutto il monte; greggi e armenti non pascolino nei pressi di questo monte». 4 Mosè, dunque, tagliò due tavole di pietra come le prime; si alzò la mattina di buon’ora, salì sul monte Sinai come il Signore gli aveva comandato, e prese in mano le due tavole di pietra. 5 Il Signore discese nella nuvola, si fermò con lui e proclamò il nome del Signore. 6 Il Signore passò davanti a lui, e gridò: «Il Signore! il Signore! il Dio misericordioso e pietoso, lento all’ira, ricco in bontà e fedeltà, 7 che conserva la sua bontà fino alla millesima generazione, che perdona l’iniquità, la trasgressione e il peccato, ma non terrà il colpevole per innocente; che punisce l’iniquità dei padri sopra i figli e sopra i figli dei figli, fino alla terza e alla quarta generazione!» 8 Mosè subito s’inchinò fino a terra e adorò. 9 Poi disse: «Ti prego, Signore, se ho trovato grazia agli occhi tuoi, venga il Signore in mezzo a noi, perché questo è un popolo dal collo duro; perdona la nostra iniquità, il nostro peccato e prendici come tua eredità». 10 Il Signore rispose: «Ecco, io faccio un patto: farò davanti a tutto il tuo popolo meraviglie, quali non sono mai state fatte su tutta la terra né in alcuna nazione; tutto il popolo in mezzo al quale ti trovi vedrà l’opera del Signore, perché tremendo è quello che io sto per fare per mezzo di te. 11 Osserva quello che oggi ti comando: ecco, io scaccerò davanti a te gli Amorei, i Cananei, gli Ittiti, i Ferezei, gli Ivvei e i Gebusei. 12 Guàrdati dal fare alleanza con gli abitanti del paese nel quale stai per andare, perché non diventino, in mezzo a te, una trappola; 13 ma demolite i loro altari, frantumate le loro colonne, abbattete i loro idoli; 14 tu non adorerai altro dio, perché il Signore, che si chiama il Geloso, è un Dio geloso. 15 Guàrdati dal fare alleanza con gli abitanti del paese, altrimenti, quando quelli si prostituiranno ai loro dèi e offriranno sacrifici ai loro dèi, potrà avvenire che essi t’invitino e tu mangi dei loro sacrifici, 16 prenda delle loro figlie per i tuoi figli, e le loro figlie si prostituiscano ai loro dèi e inducano i tuoi figli a prostituirsi ai loro dèi. 17 Non ti farai dèi di metallo fuso. 18 Osserverai la festa degli Azzimi. Per sette giorni, al tempo fissato del mese di Abib, mangerai pane azzimo, come ti ho ordinato; poiché nel mese di Abib tu sei uscito dall’Egitto. 19 Ogni primogenito è mio; mio è ogni primo parto maschio di tutto il tuo bestiame: del bestiame grosso e minuto. 20 Ma riscatterai con un agnello il primo nato dell’asino; e, se non lo vorrai riscattare, gli romperai il collo. Riscatterai ogni primogenito dei tuoi figli. Nessuno comparirà davanti a me a mani vuote. 21 Lavorerai sei giorni; ma il settimo giorno ti riposerai: ti riposerai anche al tempo dell’aratura e della mietitura. 22 Celebrerai la festa delle Settimane, cioè delle primizie della mietitura del frumento, e la festa della Raccolta alla fine dell’anno. 23 Tre volte all’anno ogni vostro maschio comparirà alla presenza del Signore Dio, che è il Dio d’Israele. 24 Io scaccerò davanti a te delle nazioni e allargherò i tuoi confini; nessuno oserà appropriarsi del tuo paese, quando salirai, tre volte all’anno, per comparire alla presenza del Signore, che è il tuo Dio. 25 Non offrirai con pane lievitato il sangue della vittima immolata a me, e il sacrificio della festa di Pasqua non sarà conservato fino al mattino. 26 Porterai alla casa del Signore, il tuo Dio, le primizie dei primi frutti della tua terra. Non cuocerai il capretto nel latte di sua madre». 27 Poi il Signore disse a Mosè: «Scrivi queste parole; perché sul fondamento di queste parole io ho fatto un patto con te e con Israele». 28 E Mosè rimase lì con il Signore quaranta giorni e quaranta notti; non mangiò pane e non bevve acqua. E il Signore scrisse sulle tavole le parole del patto, i dieci comandamenti.

Le nuove tavole della legge

29 Poi Mosè scese dal monte Sinai. Egli aveva in mano le due tavole della testimonianza quando scese dal monte. Mosè non sapeva che la pelle del suo viso era diventata tutta raggiante mentre egli parlava con il Signore. 30 Aaronne e tutti i figli d’Israele guardarono Mosè, e videro che la pelle del suo viso era tutta raggiante. Perciò ebbero paura di avvicinarsi a lui. 31 Ma Mosè li chiamò, e Aaronne e tutti i capi della comunità tornarono a lui, e Mosè parlò loro. 32 Dopo questo, tutti i figli d’Israele si avvicinarono, ed egli impose loro tutto quello che il Signore gli aveva detto sul monte Sinai. 33 Quando Mosè ebbe finito di parlare con loro, si mise un velo sulla faccia. 34 Ma quando Mosè entrava alla presenza del Signore per parlare con lui, si toglieva il velo, finché non tornava fuori; poi tornava fuori e diceva ai figli d’Israele quello che gli era stato comandato. 35 I figli d’Israele, guardando la faccia di Mosè, vedevano la sua pelle tutta raggiante; Mosè si rimetteva il velo sulla faccia, finché non entrava a parlare con il Signore.
