Jeremiah’s enemies try to have him killed

1 A message from the LORD came to Jeremiah. It was shortly after Jehoiakim became king of Judah. He was the son of Josiah. 2 The LORD said to Jeremiah, ‘Stand in the courtyard of my house. Speak to the people of the towns in Judah. Speak to all those who come to worship in my house. Tell them everything I command you. Do not leave out a single word. 3 Perhaps they will listen. Maybe they will turn from their evil ways. Then I will not do what I said I would. I will not bring trouble on them. I had planned to punish them because of the evil things they had done. 4 Tell them, “The LORD says, ‘Listen to me. Obey my law that I gave you. 5 And listen to the words my servants the prophets are speaking. I have sent them to you again and again. But you have not listened to them. 6 So I will make this house like Shiloh. All the nations on earth will use the name of this city in a curse.’ ” ’ 7 Jeremiah spoke these words in the LORD’s house. The priests, the prophets and all the people heard him. 8 Jeremiah finished telling all the people everything the LORD had commanded him to say. But as soon as he did, the priests, the prophets and all the people grabbed him. They said, ‘You must die! 9 Why do you prophesy these things in the LORD’s name? Why do you say that this house will become like Shiloh? Why do you say that this city will be empty and deserted?’ And all the people crowded around Jeremiah in the LORD’s house. 10 The officials of Judah heard what had happened. So they went up from the royal palace to the LORD’s house. There they took their places at the entrance of the New Gate. 11 Then the priests and prophets spoke to the officials and all the people. They said, ‘This man should be sentenced to death. He has prophesied against this city. You have heard it with your own ears!’ 12 Then Jeremiah spoke to all the officials and people. He said, ‘The LORD sent me to prophesy against this house and this city. He told me to say everything you have heard. 13 So change the way you live and act. Obey the LORD your God. Then he won’t do what he said he would. He won’t bring on you the trouble he said he would bring. 14 As for me, I’m in your hands. Do to me what you think is good and right. 15 But you can be sure of one thing. If you put me to death, you will be held responsible for spilling my blood. And I haven’t even done anything wrong. You will bring guilt on yourselves and this city and those who live in it. The LORD has sent me to you. He wanted me to say all these things so you could hear them. And that’s the truth.’ 16 Then the officials and all the people spoke to the priests and prophets. They said, ‘This man shouldn’t be sentenced to death! He has spoken to us in the name of the LORD our God.’ 17 Some of the elders of the land stepped forward. They spoke to the whole community gathered there. They said, 18 ‘Micah from Moresheth prophesied. It was during the time Hezekiah was king over Judah. Micah spoke to all the people of Judah. He told them, “The LORD who rules over all says, ‘ “ ‘Zion will be ploughed up like a field. Jerusalem will be turned into a pile of rubble. The temple hill will be covered with bushes and weeds.’ ” 19 Did King Hezekiah or anyone else in Judah put Micah to death? Hezekiah had respect for the LORD and tried to please him. And the LORD didn’t judge Jerusalem as he said he would. He didn’t bring on it the trouble he said he would bring. But we are about to bring horrible trouble on ourselves!’ 20 Uriah was another man who prophesied in the name of the LORD. He was from Kiriath Jearim. He was the son of Shemaiah. Uriah prophesied against this city and this land. He said the same things Jeremiah did. 21 King Jehoiakim and all his officers and officials heard Uriah’s words. So the king decided to put him to death. But Uriah heard about it. He was afraid. And he ran away to Egypt. 22 So King Jehoiakim sent Elnathan to Egypt. He also sent some other men along with him. Elnathan was the son of Akbor. 23 Those men brought Uriah out of Egypt. They took him to King Jehoiakim. Then the king had Uriah struck down with a sword. He had Uriah’s body thrown into one of the graves of the ordinary people. 24 In spite of that, Ahikam stood up for Jeremiah. Ahikam was the son of Shaphan. Because of Ahikam, Jeremiah wasn’t handed over to the people to be put to death.

1 Jojakim, der Sohn von Joschija, war erst kurze Zeit König über Juda, da erging das Wort des HERRN an Jeremia. Der HERR sagte zu dem Propheten: 2 »Stell dich in den Vorhof des Tempels und verkünde allen, die aus den Städten in Juda dorthin zum Gottesdienst kommen, was ich dir jetzt auftrage. Lass nichts aus! 3 Vielleicht werden sie darauf hören und von ihren verkehrten Wegen umkehren. Dann wird es mir leidtun und ich werde das Unglück nicht über sie bringen, das ich ihnen wegen ihrer bösen Taten angedroht habe. 4 Sag also zu ihnen: ›Der HERR warnt euch! Hört auf mich, sagt er, und haltet euch an die Weisungen, die ich euch gegeben habe! 5 Achtet auf das, was euch meine Propheten verkünden! Ich habe immer neue zu euch gesandt; aber bisher habt ihr sie nie ernst genommen. 6 Wenn ihr nicht auf mich hört, verfahre ich mit diesem Tempel wie mit dem von Schilo. Und eure Stadt werde ich so verwüsten, dass alle Völker der Erde ihren Namen als Fluchwort benutzen werden!‹« 7 Die Priester, die Propheten und das ganze Volk hörten, was Jeremia im Vorhof des Tempels sagte. 8 Als er zu Ende geredet hatte, packten sie ihn und schrien: »Dafür musst du sterben! 9 Du wagst zu behaupten: ›Diesem Tempel wird es ergehen wie Schilo und diese Stadt wird völlig zerstört; niemand wird mehr hier leben!‹ Das sagst du nicht im Auftrag des HERRN!« Und das ganze Volk rottete sich im Vorhof des Tempels gegen Jeremia zusammen. 10 Als die führenden Männer von Juda hörten, was dort vorging, kamen sie vom Königspalast zum Tempel herauf und nahmen am Eingang des Neuen Tores zur Gerichtsverhandlung Platz. 11 Die Priester und Propheten erhoben vor ihnen und vor dem ganzen Volk Anklage gegen Jeremia und sagten: »Dieser Mann hat den Tod verdient, denn er hat sich angemaßt, als Prophet gegen unsere Stadt zu reden. Ihr habt es mit eigenen Ohren gehört.« 12 Jeremia verteidigte sich und sagte zu den Richtern und dem versammelten Volk: »Der HERR hat mich gesandt, um gegen diesen Tempel und diese Stadt all das zu sagen, was ihr gehört habt. 13 Ändert jetzt euer Leben und Tun und hört auf den HERRN, euren Gott! Dann wird es ihm leidtun und er wird das Unglück nicht über euch bringen, das er euch angedroht hat. 14 Ich bin in eurer Hand; macht mit mir, was euch gut und recht erscheint. 15 Doch das sollt ihr wissen: Wenn ihr mich tötet, vergießt ihr das Blut eines Unschuldigen. Ihr ladet Blutschuld auf euch und auf diese ganze Stadt und ihre Bewohner. Denn es ist wirklich der HERR, der mich zu euch gesandt hat, um euch diese Warnung zu überbringen.« 16 Da sagten die Richter und das ganze Volk zu den Priestern und Propheten: »Dieser Mann hat nichts getan, was den Tod verdient, denn er hat wirklich im Namen des HERRN, unseres Gottes, zu uns gesprochen.« 17 Zuvor waren einige von den Ältesten des Landes aufgestanden und hatten zur versammelten Menge gesagt: 18 »Zur Zeit, als König Hiskija über Juda regierte, wirkte hier der Prophet Micha aus Moreschet. Er sagte zum ganzen Volk von Juda: ›So spricht der HERR, der Herrscher der Welt:* Der Berg Zion wird umgepflügt wie ein Acker, Jerusalem wird zu einem Trümmerhaufen, der Tempelberg zu einem bewaldeten Hügel!‹ 19 Haben etwa damals der König und das Volk von Juda den Propheten getötet? Haben sie nicht vielmehr dem HERRN gehorcht und versucht, seine Gunst wiederzugewinnen? Deshalb tat es dem Herrn leid und er hat das Unglück nicht über sie gebracht, das er ihnen angedroht hatte. Wir aber sind drauf und dran, durch großes Unrecht unser Leben in Gefahr zu bringen.«

Wie es Jeremia fast ergangen wäre

20 Es gab damals noch einen anderen Propheten, der im Auftrag des HERRN gegen Jerusalem und das Land Juda auftrat – ganz ähnlich wie Jeremia. Er hieß Urija, war ein Sohn von Schemaja und stammte aus Kirjat-Jearim. 21 Als König Jojakim und seine Heerführer und Minister hörten, was Urija sagte, wollte der König ihn umbringen lassen. Urija erfuhr davon, bekam Angst und floh nach Ägypten. 22 König Jojakim aber schickte Elnatan, den Sohn Achbors, mit einigen Männern dorthin. 23 Sie holten ihn aus Ägypten zurück und brachten ihn vor den König. Der ließ ihn mit dem Schwert hinrichten und seine Leiche auf dem Armenfriedhof verscharren. 24 Jeremia jedoch entging der Hinrichtung – aber nur, weil Ahikam, der Sohn Schafans, ihn beschützte und nicht zuließ, dass er der wütenden Menge ausgeliefert wurde.
