A prophet without honour

1 Jesus left there and went to his home town of Nazareth. His disciples went with him. 2 When the Sabbath day came, he began to teach in the synagogue. Many who heard him were amazed. ‘Where did this man get these things?’ they asked. ‘What’s this wisdom that has been given to him? What are these remarkable miracles he is doing? 3 Isn’t this the carpenter? Isn’t this Mary’s son? Isn’t this the brother of James, Joseph, Judas and Simon? Aren’t his sisters here with us?’ They were not pleased with him at all. 4 Jesus said to them, ‘A prophet is honoured everywhere except in his own town. He doesn’t receive any honour among his relatives or in his own home.’ 5 Jesus placed his hands on a few ill people and healed them. But he could not do any other miracles there.

Jesus sends out the 12 disciples

6 He was amazed because they had no faith. Jesus went around teaching from village to village. 7 He called the 12 disciples to him. Then he began to send them out two by two. He gave them authority to drive out evil spirits. 8 Here is what he told them to do. ‘Take only a walking stick for your trip. Do not take bread or a bag. Take no money in your belts. 9 Wear sandals. But do not take extra clothes. 10 When you are invited into a house, stay there until you leave town. 11 Some places may not welcome you or listen to you. If they don’t, leave that place and shake the dust off your feet. That will be a witness against the people living there.’ 12 They went out. And they preached that people should turn away from their sins. 13 They drove out many demons. They poured olive oil on many ill people and healed them.

John the Baptist’s head is cut off

14 King Herod heard about this. Jesus’ name had become well known. Some were saying, ‘John the Baptist has been raised from the dead! That is why he has the power to do miracles.’ 15 Others said, ‘He is Elijah.’ Still others claimed, ‘He is a prophet. He is like one of the prophets of long ago.’ 16 But when Herod heard this, he said, ‘I had John’s head cut off. And now he has been raised from the dead!’ 17 In fact, it was Herod himself who had given orders to arrest John. He had him tied up and put in prison. He did this because of Herodias. She was the wife of Herod’s brother Philip. But now Herod was married to her. 18 John had been saying to Herod, ‘It is against the Law for you to be married to your brother’s wife.’ 19 Herodias couldn’t forgive John for saying that. She wanted to kill him. But she could not, 20 because Herod was afraid of John. So he kept John safe. Herod knew John was a holy man who did what was right. When Herod heard him, he was very puzzled. But he liked to listen to John. 21 Finally the right time came. Herod gave a banquet on his birthday. He invited his high officials and military leaders. He also invited the most important men in Galilee. 22 Then the daughter of Herodias came in and danced. She pleased Herod and his dinner guests. The king said to the girl, ‘Ask me for anything you want. I’ll give it to you.’ 23 And he gave her his promise. He said to her, ‘Anything you ask for I will give you. I’ll give you up to half my kingdom.’ 24 She went out and said to her mother, ‘What should I ask for?’ ‘The head of John the Baptist,’ she answered. 25 At once the girl hurried to ask the king. She said, ‘I want you to give me the head of John the Baptist on a big plate right now.’ 26 The king was very upset. But he thought about his promise and his dinner guests. So he did not want to say no to the girl. 27 He sent a man right away to bring John’s head. The man went to the prison and cut off John’s head. 28 He brought it back on a big plate. He gave it to the girl, and she gave it to her mother. 29 John’s disciples heard about this. So they came and took his body. Then they placed it in a tomb.

Jesus feeds five thousand

30 The apostles gathered around Jesus. They told him all they had done and taught. 31 But many people were coming and going. So they did not even have a chance to eat. Then Jesus said to his apostles, ‘Come with me by yourselves to a quiet place. You need to get some rest.’ 32 So they went away by themselves in a boat to a quiet place. 33 But many people who saw them leaving recognised them. They ran from all the towns and got there ahead of them. 34 When Jesus came ashore, he saw a large crowd. He felt deep concern for them. They were like sheep without a shepherd. So he began teaching them many things. 35 By that time it was late in the day. His disciples came to him. ‘There is nothing here,’ they said. ‘It’s already very late. 36 Send the people away. Then they can go to the nearby countryside and villages to buy something to eat.’ 37 But Jesus answered, ‘You give them something to eat.’ They said to him, ‘That would take more than half a year’s pay! Should we go and spend that much on bread? Are we supposed to feed them?’ 38 ‘How many loaves do you have?’ Jesus asked. ‘Go and see.’ When they found out, they said, ‘Five loaves and two fish.’ 39 Then Jesus instructed them to have all the people sit down in groups on the green grass. 40 So they sat down in groups of 100s and 50s. 41 Jesus took the five loaves and the two fish. He looked up to heaven and gave thanks. He broke the loaves into pieces. Then he gave them to his disciples to pass around to the people. He also divided the two fish among them all. 42 All of them ate and were satisfied. 43 The disciples picked up 12 baskets of broken pieces of bread and fish. 44 The number of men who had eaten was 5,000.

Jesus walks on the water

45 Right away Jesus made his disciples get into the boat. He had them go on ahead of him to Bethsaida. Then he sent the crowd away. 46 After leaving them, he went up on a mountainside to pray. 47 Later that night, the boat was in the middle of the Sea of Galilee. Jesus was alone on land. 48 He saw the disciples pulling hard on the oars. The wind was blowing against them. Shortly before dawn, he went out to them. He walked on the lake. When he was about to pass by them, 49 they saw him walking on the lake. They thought he was a ghost, so they cried out. 50 They all saw him and were terrified. Right away Jesus said to them, ‘Be brave! It is I. Don’t be afraid.’ 51 Then he climbed into the boat with them. The wind died down. And they were completely amazed. 52 They had not understood about the loaves. They were stubborn. 53 They went across the lake and landed at Gennesaret. There they tied up the boat. 54 As soon as Jesus and his disciples got out, people recognised him. 55 They ran through that whole area to bring to him those who were ill. They carried them on mats to where they heard he was. 56 He went into the villages, the towns and the countryside. Everywhere he went, the people brought those who were ill to the market areas. Those who were ill begged him to let them touch just the edge of his clothes. And all who touched his clothes were healed.

Människorna i Nasaret vägrar att tro

1 Efter denna händelse lämnade Jesus platsen, och han kom till sin hemstad Nasaret tillsammans med sina efterföljare. 2 När det blev vilodag* gick han till synagogan* för att undervisa, och många blev förvånade över hans vishet och de under han gjorde när han la händerna på folk.”Varifrån har han fått detta?” sa de. 3 ”Det är ju bara snickaren, Marias son, bror till Jakob, Joses, Judas och Simon, och hans systrar bor också här hos oss.” Och så retade de sig på honom. 4 Då sa Jesus till dem: ”En profet som framför Guds budskap blir erkänd överallt utom i sin egen hemstad, bland sina släktingar och i sin egen familj.” 5 Och eftersom folket i Nasaret inte trodde på honom, kunde han inte göra några under där. Han botade bara några få sjuka genom att lägga händerna på dem, 6 och han förvånade sig över att folket inte ville tro på honom. Sedan vandrade Jesus runt i byarna i trakten och undervisade.

Jesus sänder ut sina tolv närmaste efterföljare

7 Han kallade till sig sina tolv närmaste efterföljare och sände ut dem två och två och gav dem makt att driva ut onda andar. 8 Han sa åt dem att inte ta med sig något annat på vägen än en vandringsstav. De fick inte ta med någon mat, ingen väska, inga pengar, och inte några extra skor eller kläder. 10 ”När ni blivit erbjudna att övernatta hos någon, stanna då där tills ni fortsätter till nästa plats”, sa han. 11 ”Men om människorna på en plats inte vill ta emot er eller lyssna till er, så gå bara därifrån och bekymra er inte mer om dem. Skaka platsens damm av era fötter som ett tecken på att de själva får ta ansvar för vad de gjort.” 12 Så gick Jesus efterföljare iväg, och överallt dit de kom uppmanade de folk att lämna synden och vända om till Gud. 13 Och de drev ut många onda andar och smorde många sjuka med olja* och botade dem.

Johannes döparens död

14 Snart fick också kung Herodes höra talas om Jesus, eftersom ryktet om Jesus spreds överallt. Folk sa: ”Det är Johannes döparen som har uppstått från de döda. Det är därför han kan göra sådana under.” 15 Men en del sa: ”Jesus är Elia*.” Andra sa: ”Han är verkligen en profet som framför Guds budskap, precis som profeterna* förr i tiden. 16 ”Nej”, sa Herodes, ”det är Johannes, han som jag lät halshugga. Han har uppstått från de döda.” 17 Herodes hade nämligen arresterat Johannes och låtit binda honom och kasta honom i fängelse på grund av sin fru, Herodias. Hon hade först varit gift med kungens bror Filippos, men Herodes hade ändå gift sig med henne. 18 Johannes hade sagt rent ut till Herodes: ”Det är inte tillåtet för dig att leva ihop med din brors fru.” 19 Därför hatade Herodias honom, och ville döda honom, men Herodes var emot det. 20 Han hade innerst inne respekt för Johannes och ville skydda honom, för han visste att Johannes var en god man som levde efter Guds vilja. Varje gång han hört Johannes kände han sig osäker och visste inte vad han skulle tro, men ändå lyssnade han gärna på honom. 21 Till slut kom i alla fall Herodias chans. Herodes firade sin födelsedag och ställde till med en fest för hovfolket, officerarna och de förnämsta männen i Galileen. 22 Och medan festen pågick kom Herodias dotter in och dansade. Kung Herodes och hans gäster blev mycket förtjusta, och kungen sa till flickan: ”Be mig om vad du vill, och jag ska ge det till dig.” 23 Sedan svor han inför gästerna och upprepade: ”Ja, vad du än ber mig om ska du få, om det så är hälften av mitt rike.” 24 Hon gick då ut och frågade sin mamma vad hon skulle be om. Och mamman svarade: ”Be om Johannes döparens huvud!” 25 Flickan skyndade genast tillbaka till kungen och sa till honom: ”Jag vill ha Johannes döparens huvud på ett fat, nu genast!” 26 Kungen blev mycket ledsen, men på grund av sitt löfte, och eftersom han inte ville ta tillbaka det han sagt inför gästerna, lät han henne få som hon ville. 27 Han gav därför order till en av sina livvakter att gå och hämta Johannes döparens huvud. Och mannen gick iväg till fängelset och halshögg Johannes 28 och kom tillbaka med hans huvud på ett fat. Han gav det sedan till flickan, som i sin tur bar det till sin mamma. 29 Men när Johannes efterföljare hörde vad som hänt, kom de och hämtade hans kropp och begravde den.

Jesus ger mat åt mer än 5 000 personer

30 De tolv efterföljare som Jesus hade sänt ut kom nu tillbaka från sin vandring, och de rapporterade allt de hade gjort och allt de hade undervisat människorna om. 31 Men eftersom det var så mycket folk runt omkring dem att de inte ens fick tid att äta, föreslog Jesus: ”Kom så drar vi oss undan till en öde plats där ni kan vila er lite.” 32 Och så åkte de iväg i en båt till en öde plats. 33 Men många människor såg att de åkte iväg och skyndade till fots runt sjön och mötte dem när de steg i land på andra sidan. 34 Och när Jesus steg ur båten och fick se allt folk som hade samlats, kände han medlidande med dem, för de var som får utan herde. Han tog sig därför tid och undervisade dem länge om det som de behövde veta. 35 Fram emot kvällen kom hans efterföljare till honom och sa: ”Det är redan sent, och det finns inget att äta här i ödemarken. Skicka iväg folket, så att de kan gå till byarna och gårdarna här i närheten och köpa mat.” 37 Men Jesus sa: ”Ni själva kan ge dem mat!””Hur då?” frågade hans efterföljare. ”Det skulle ju kosta en förmögenhet* att köpa mat till allihop.” 38 ”Hur mycket mat har ni?” frågade han. ”Gå och ta reda på det.”När de kom tillbaka rapporterade de att det fanns fem bröd och två fiskar. 39 Jesus bad dem då att säga till människorna att sätta sig ner i grupper på 50 eller 100 personer, där det fanns grönt gräs. 41 Han tog sedan de fem bröden och de två fiskarna och såg upp mot himlen och tackade Gud för dem. Efter det bröt han bröden i bitar och gav varje efterföljare lite bröd och fisk, som de skulle ge vidare till folket. 42 Alla åt och blev mätta, 43 och efteråt samlade man upp tolv fulla korgar med bröd och fisk. 44 Det var 5 000 män som hade ätit, förutom kvinnor och barn.

Jesus går på vattnet

45 Genast efter detta bad Jesus sina efterföljare att sätta sig i båten och åka i förväg till Betsaida på andra sidan sjön. Själv stannade han kvar för att se till att folket började vandra hemåt. 46 Och sedan han fått iväg folket, gick han upp på ett berg för att be. 47 När det blev kväll var Jesus efterföljare fortfarande långt ute på sjön i sin båt. Jesus, som var ensam kvar på land, 48 såg hur de slet vid årorna eftersom de hade motvind. Strax innan det började ljusna kom Jesus till sina efterföljare, gående mot dem på vattnet. 49 Men när de såg honom gå på vattnet skrek de till av rädsla, för de trodde det var ett spöke. 50 Alla såg de honom och blev dödsförskräckta. Men Jesus talade genast till dem och sa: ”Lugna er, det är jag. Var inte rädda.” 51 Sedan steg han i båten till dem, och i samma stund la sig vinden. Hans efterföljare var alldeles häpna. 52 De hade ännu inte fattat vem Jesus var och hade svårt för att tro, trots det stora undret kvällen innan då så många hade fått bröd att äta.

Jesus botar alla som rör vid honom

53 När Jesus och hans efterföljare hade åkt över sjön, kom de till Gennesaret, där de gick i land. 54 Och så snart de steg ur båten kände människorna igen Jesus. 55 De sprang runt i hela området för att sprida nyheten om att han var där, och de började bära sjuka människor på deras sovmattor till de platser där de hörde att han befann sig. 56 Ja, överallt dit han kom, i städer och byar och gårdar, bar man ut de sjuka i det fria och bad att de sjuka åtminstone skulle få röra vid tofsen på hans mantel. Och alla som gjorde det blev friska!
