Jesus heals a man controlled by demons

1 They went across the Sea of Galilee to the area of the Gerasenes. 2 Jesus got out of the boat. A man controlled by an evil spirit came from the tombs to meet him. 3 The man lived in the tombs. No one could keep him tied up anymore. Not even a chain could hold him. 4 His hands and feet had often been chained. But he tore the chains apart. And he broke the iron cuffs on his ankles. No one was strong enough to control him. 5 Night and day he screamed among the tombs and in the hills. He cut himself with stones. 6 When he saw Jesus a long way off, he ran to him. He fell on his knees in front of him. 7 He shouted at the top of his voice, ‘Jesus, Son of the Most High God, what do you want with me? Swear to God that you won’t hurt me!’ 8 This was because Jesus had said to him, ‘Come out of this man, you evil spirit!’ 9 Then Jesus asked the demon, ‘What is your name?’ ‘My name is Legion,’ he replied. ‘There are many of us.’ 10 And he begged Jesus again and again not to send them out of the area. 11 A large herd of pigs was feeding on the nearby hillside. 12 The demons begged Jesus, ‘Send us among the pigs. Let us go into them.’ 13 Jesus allowed it. The evil spirits came out of the man and went into the pigs. There were about 2,000 pigs in the herd. The whole herd rushed down the steep bank. They ran into the lake and drowned. 14 Those who were tending the pigs ran off. They told the people in the town and countryside what had happened. The people went out to see for themselves. 15 Then they came to Jesus. They saw the man who had been controlled by many demons. He was sitting there. He was now dressed and thinking clearly. All this made the people afraid. 16 Those who had seen it told them what had happened to the man. They told about the pigs as well. 17 Then the people began to beg Jesus to leave their area. 18 Jesus was getting into the boat. The man who had been controlled by demons begged to go with him. 19 Jesus did not let him. He said, ‘Go home to your own people. Tell them how much the Lord has done for you. Tell them how kind he has been to you.’ 20 So the man went away. In the area known as the Ten Cities, he began to tell how much Jesus had done for him. And all the people were amazed.

Jesus heals a dead girl and a suffering woman

21 Jesus went across the Sea of Galilee in a boat. It landed at the other side. There a large crowd gathered around him. 22 Then a man named Jairus came. He was a synagogue leader. When he saw Jesus, he fell at his feet. 23 He begged Jesus, ‘Please come. My little daughter is dying. Place your hands on her to heal her. Then she will live.’ 24 So Jesus went with him. A large group of people followed. They crowded around him. 25 A woman was there who had an illness that made her bleed. It had lasted for 12 years. 26 She had suffered a great deal, even though she had gone to many doctors. She had spent all the money she had. But she was getting worse, not better. 27 Then she heard about Jesus. She came up behind him in the crowd and touched his clothes. 28 She thought, ‘I just need to touch his clothes. Then I will be healed.’ 29 Right away her bleeding stopped. She felt in her body that her suffering was over. 30 At once Jesus knew that power had gone out from him. He turned round in the crowd. He asked, ‘Who touched my clothes?’ 31 ‘You see the people,’ his disciples answered. ‘They are crowding against you. And you still ask, “Who touched me?” ’ 32 But Jesus kept looking around. He wanted to see who had touched him. 33 Then the woman came and fell at his feet. She knew what had happened to her. She was shaking with fear. But she told him the whole truth. 34 He said to her, ‘Dear woman, your faith has healed you. Go in peace. You are free from your suffering.’ 35 While Jesus was still speaking, some people came from the house of Jairus. He was the synagogue leader. ‘Your daughter is dead,’ they said. ‘Why bother the teacher anymore?’ 36 Jesus heard what they were saying. He told the synagogue leader, ‘Don’t be afraid. Just believe.’ 37 He let only Peter, James, and John, the brother of James, follow him. 38 They came to the home of the synagogue leader. There Jesus saw a lot of confusion. People were crying and sobbing loudly. 39 He went inside. Then he said to them, ‘Why all this confusion and sobbing? The child is not dead. She is only sleeping.’ 40 But they laughed at him. He made them all go outside. He took only the child’s father and mother and the disciples who were with him. And he went in where the child was. 41 He took her by the hand. Then he said to her, ‘Talitha koum!’ This means, ‘Little girl, I say to you, get up!’ 42 The girl was 12 years old. Right away she stood up and began to walk around. They were totally amazed at this. 43 Jesus gave strict orders not to let anyone know what had happened. And he told them to give her something to eat.

1 Så kom de över till andra sidan sjön, till området kring Gerasa*. 2 Och när Jesus steg ur båten rusade en man emot honom från gravplatsen. Han var besatt av en ond ande 3 och levde bland gravarna. Han var så vild att det inte ens gick att binda honom med kedjor. 4 Man hade flera gånger försökt binda både hans händer och fötter, men varje gång hade han slitit sönder kedjorna och fotbojorna. Ingen var stark nog att rå på honom. 5 Dag och natt höll han till bland gravarna eller irrade omkring uppe bland bergen och skrek och skar sönder sig själv med vassa stenar. 6 Mannen hade fått syn på Jesus redan då han var långt borta och kom nu rusande och föll ner för honom. 7 ”Lämna mig ifred, Jesus, du den högsta Gudens Son! Svär inför Gud att inte plåga mig!” skrek han så högt han kunde, 8 för Jesus hade just befallt: ”Far ut ur mannen, du onda ande.” 9 Jesus frågade nu: ”Vad heter du?” Mannen svarade då: ”Jag heter legion*, för vi är många.” 10 Och gång på gång bad de onda andarna att Jesus inte skulle köra bort dem ifrån området. 11 Men samtidigt som detta hände gick en stor svinhjord och betade på berget ovanför sjön. 12 De onda andarna tiggde därför och bad: ”Skicka iväg oss till svinen, så att vi kan fara in i dem”, 13 och Jesus lät dem få som de ville. Då lämnade de onda andarna mannen och for in i svinen, och hela hjorden på omkring 2000 svin, störtade utför bergssluttningen och drunknade i sjön. 14 Herdarna som vaktat svinen sprang till den närliggande staden och till byarna runt omkring och berättade alltihop, och folket gick då ut för att ta reda på vad som hade hänt. 15 När de kom fram till Jesus fick de se mannen som haft de onda andarna i sig sitta där, påklädd och fullständigt normal. Skräckslagna hörde de sedan ögonvittnena berätta hur den besatta mannen hade blivit befriad och vad som hade hänt med svinen. 17 Men då bad folket Jesus att lämna deras område. 18 När han steg i båten, bad mannen som varit besatt att han skulle få följa med Jesus. 19 Men Jesus ville inte ta med honom. ”Gå hem till din familj och dina vänner”, sa han, ”och berätta för dem vilket stort under Herren har gjort med dig, och hur han hade medlidande med dig och hjälpte dig.” 20 Då gick mannen iväg och berättade i hela Tiostadsområdet* om det stora under Jesus hade gjort med honom. Och folk blev alldeles häpna när de hörde hans berättelse.

Jesus botar en kvinna med blödningar och uppväcker en död flicka

21 När Jesus hade åkt tillbaka till andra sidan sjön, samlades mycket folk omkring honom. Och medan han var där på stranden, 22 kom en synagogföreståndare* som hette Jairos dit. Så fort Jairos fick syn på Jesus, föll han förtvivlad ner framför honom 23 och sa: ”Min lilla flicka håller på att dö. Jag ber dig, kom och lägg händerna på henne så att hon blir frisk igen.” 24 Och Jesus gick genast med honom, följd av mycket folk som trängde på från alla håll. 25 I folkhopen fanns då också en kvinna, som i tolv års tid lidit av blödningar. 26 Hon hade plågats mycket och behandlats av många läkare, men trots att hon gjort slut på allt hon ägde för att bli frisk, hade hon inte blivit bättre, utan snarare sämre. 27 Nu hade hon hört om alla de märkliga under Jesus hade gjort. Därför trängde hon sig fram bakom honom i folksamlingen och rörde vid hans mantel, 28 för hon tänkte att om hon bara fick röra vid hans kläder så skulle hon bli frisk. 29 Och så snart hon rört vid honom, stannade blödningen och hon kände att hon var befriad från sitt lidande. 30 Jesus märkte genast att det hade gått ut kraft från honom, och han vände sig om och frågade: ”Vem rörde vid mina kläder?” 31 Hans efterföljare sa till honom: ”Folk tränger ju på från alla håll, självklart måste någon ha rört vid dig!” 32 Men Jesus såg sig omkring för att få reda på vem som hade gjort det. 33 Kvinnan blev förskräckt,* eftersom hon visste vad som hade hänt med henne, men hon kom darrande fram och föll ner för Jesus och berättade hur allt hade gått till. 34 Då sa Jesus till henne: ”Min dotter, din tro har hjälpt dig. Gå i frid. Du är befriad från ditt lidande.” 35 Medan Jesus fortfarande talade med kvinnan, kom det en budbärare från Jairos hus och meddelade pappan: ”Din flicka är död. Det är ingen idé att du stör Mästaren längre.” 36 Men Jesus brydde sig inte om deras ord, utan sa till Jairos: ”Var inte rädd! Fortsätt bara att tro.” 37 Sedan lät han bara Petrus, Jakob och Johannes följa med. 38 När de kom fram till Jairos hem, såg Jesus att huset var fullt av människor som grät och klagade högljutt. 39 Och han gick in till dem och sa: ”Varför gråter ni och är så upprörda? Flickan är inte död, hon sover bara!” 40 Då hånskrattade de åt honom, men han körde ut dem allihop och tog med sig flickans pappa och mamma och sina tre efterföljare och gick in i rummet där flickan låg. 41 Så tog han flickan i handen och sa till henne: ”Talitakoum!*” (det betyder: Lilla flicka, jag säger dig, ställ dig upp!) 42 Och flickan, som var tolv år gammal, reste sig genast upp och började gå omkring. Hennes föräldrar bara gapade av förvåning, 43 men Jesus förbjöd dem att berätta för någon vad som hade hänt. Sedan sa han åt dem att ge flickan något att äta.
