1Rehabeam reiste nach Sichem, denn dort wollten ihn die zehn Nordstämme Israels* zum König machen.2Jerobeam, der Sohn Nebats, hörte davon. Er war zu diesem Zeitpunkt noch in Ägypten, wohin er vor Salomo geflohen war. Zunächst blieb er dort ´und wartete ab`.*3Doch dann sandten die Israeliten Boten ´nach Ägypten` und ließen ihn rufen. ´Er kam, und` zusammen mit ihm traten die versammelten Nordstämme* vor Rehabeam und sagten:4»Dein Vater hat uns ein schweres Joch auferlegt. Wenn du uns die Arbeitslast erleichterst und die Abgaben senkst*, werden wir dich als König anerkennen.«5»Kommt übermorgen wieder«, antwortete Rehabeam. Als die Leute fort waren,6beriet er sich mit den älteren, erfahrenen Männern, die bereits im Dienst seines Vaters Salomo gestanden hatten. »Welche Antwort soll ich dem Volk geben?«, fragte er. »Wozu ratet ihr?«7Sie erwiderten: »Wenn du heute auf das Volk eingehst*, wird es dir in Zukunft dienen. Gib ihnen jetzt eine freundliche Antwort, dann werden sie dir für immer gehorchen.«8Doch Rehabeam verwarf den Rat der älteren, erfahrenen Männer und fragte stattdessen die jungen Leute, die mit ihm aufgewachsen waren und nun in seinem Dienst standen:9»Was ratet ihr mir? Wie sollen wir auf die Forderung der Israeliten antworten? Sie wollen, dass ich das Joch, das mein Vater ihnen auferlegt hat, leichter mache.«10Die jungen Leute, die in seinem Alter waren, sagten zu ihm: »Dieses Volk will, dass du es ihnen leichter machst als dein Vater? Sag ihnen: ›Was mein Vater konnte, das kann ich schon lange.*11Er hat euch ein schweres Joch aufgeladen. Ich werde es noch schwerer machen. Er hat euch mit Peitschen angetrieben. Ich werde euch mit Stachelpeitschen antreiben.‹«12Zwei Tage später kamen Jerobeam und das ganze Volk wie vereinbart zu König Rehabeam,13und der König gab dem Volk eine harte Antwort. Er verwarf den ´weisen` Rat der erfahrenen Männer14und antwortete so, wie ihm die jungen Leute geraten hatten: »Mein Vater hat euch ein schweres Joch auferlegt. Ich werde es noch schwerer machen. Mein Vater hat euch mit Peitschen angetrieben. Ich werde euch mit Stachelpeitschen antreiben.«15Der HERR hatte es so gefügt, dass der König nicht auf die Forderung des Volkes einging. So ließ er in Erfüllung gehen, was er durch den Propheten Ahija aus Schilo zu Jerobeam, dem Sohn Nebats, gesagt hatte.16Als die nordisraelitischen Stämme merkten*, dass der König nicht auf sie hören wollte, riefen sie: »Was geht uns das Königshaus David an? Seit wann gehören die Nachkommen Isais zu uns?* Ihr Männer Israels, auf, wir gehen jetzt nach Hause. Sollen Davids Söhne doch über ihre eigene Sippe regieren!*« Danach löste sich die Versammlung auf,17und nur diejenigen Nordisraeliten, die sich in den Städten Judas angesiedelt hatten, erkannten Rehabeam als König an.18Rehabeam machte noch einen Versuch und schickte Adoram*, den Aufseher über die Fronarbeiter, zu den Vertretern der Nordstämme. Aber sie empfingen Adoram mit einem solchen Steinhagel*, dass er umkam. Rehabeam sprang, so schnell er konnte, auf seinen Streitwagen und floh nach Jerusalem.19So sagten sich die Stämme Nordisraels vom Königshaus David los und sind bis heute von ihm getrennt.20Als es sich unter den Nordisraeliten* herumgesprochen hatte, dass Jerobeam ´aus Ägypten` zurückgekehrt war, sandten sie Boten zu ihm und riefen ihn in ihre Versammlung. Dort machten sie ihn zum König über ganz Nordisrael. Zum Königshaus David aber hielt niemand mehr außer dem Stamm Juda.
Israel soll nicht zurückerobert werden
21Sobald Rehabeam in Jerusalem eingetroffen war, rief er die Männer Judas und Benjamins zusammen und stellte ein Heer von 180.000 bewährten Kriegsleuten auf. Sie sollten gegen die Nordstämme* in den Kampf ziehen, um die Herrschaft für ´ihren König` Rehabeam, den Sohn Salomos, zurückzugewinnen.22Da sprach Gott zum Propheten Schemaja:*23»Sage zu Rehabeam, dem Sohn Salomos, dem König von Juda, und zu den Männern Judas und Benjamins und zum ganzen übrigen Volk:24So spricht der HERR: ›Zieht nicht in den Krieg gegen eure Brüder, die Männer von Nordisrael, sondern geht wieder nach Hause! Denn das, was geschehen ist, habe ich so gefügt.‹« Die Männer Judas und Benjamins gehorchten dem HERRN und kehrten nach Hause zurück, wie er es befohlen hatte.
Jerobeam verführt Israel zum Götzendienst
25Jerobeam baute die Stadt Sichem im Bergland von Efraim ´zur Hauptstadt aus` und wohnte darin. Danach zog er nach Penuël und befestigte auch diese Stadt.26Aber er machte sich Sorgen: » ´Über kurz oder lang` werde ich mein Königtum wieder an die Nachkommen Davids verlieren.27Denn wenn das Volk weiterhin ´Jahr für Jahr` nach Jerusalem zieht, um dort im Tempel des HERRN zu opfern, wird ihr Herz sich wieder ihrem ´früheren` König zuwenden. Sie werden mich töten und Rehabeam von Juda als ihren König anerkennen.«28Er beriet sich mit seinen Ratgebern* und beschloss, zwei goldene Stierkälber anzufertigen. Zum Volk sagte er: »Ihr braucht nicht länger zum ´Tempel in` Jerusalem zu ziehen. Seht her: Das ist euer Gott, der euch aus Ägypten geführt hat!*«29Das eine Stierkalb ließ er in Bet-El aufstellen und das andere in ´der Stadt` Dan.30Damit verleitete er das Volk zur Sünde. Die Leute geleiteten das zweite Stierkalb sogar in einer großen Prozession bis nach Dan.*31Auch an vielen weiteren Opferstätten im Land errichtete Jerobeam Heiligtümer* und setzte irgendwelche Israeliten, die nicht aus dem Stamm Levi kamen, als Priester ein.32Zudem führte er ein Fest ein, das dem ´Laubhütten` fest in Juda entsprechen sollte. Allerdings wurde es ´nicht am fünfzehnten Tag des siebten, sondern` am fünfzehnten Tag des achten Monats gefeiert. Jerobeam selbst trat an diesem Tag in Bet-El auf die Stufen des Altars, um seinen Stierkälbern Opfer darzubringen. Während des Festes weihte er auch die Priester, die er für den Dienst an den neu errichteten Heiligtümern bestimmt hatte.*
Ein Bote Gottes kündigt die Entweihung des neuen Altars an
33Am fünfzehnten Tag des achten Monats also veranstaltete Jerobeam für die Israeliten das Fest, dessen Datum er eigenmächtig festgelegt hatte. Er stieg die Stufen des Altars hinauf, den er in Bet-El gebaut hatte, um selbst das Opfer darzubringen*.

They hearkened therefore to the word of the LORD, and returned to depart, according to the word of the LORD.25Then Jeroboam built Shechem in mount Ephraim, and dwelt therein; and went out from thence, and built Penuel.26And Jeroboam said in his heart, Now shall the kingdom return to the house of David:27If this people go up to do sacrifice in the house of the LORD at Jerusalem, then shall the heart of this people turn again unto their lord, even unto Rehoboam king of Judah, and they shall kill me, and go again to Rehoboam king of Judah.28Whereupon the king took counsel, and made two calves of gold, and said unto them, It is too much for you to go up to Jerusalem: behold thy gods, O Israel, which brought thee up out of the land of Egypt.29And he set the one in Bethel, and the other put he in Dan.30And this thing became a sin: for the people went to worship before the one, even unto Dan.31And he made an house of high places, and made priests of the lowest of the people, which were not of the sons of Levi.32And Jeroboam ordained a feast in the eighth month, on the fifteenth day of the month, like unto the feast that is in Judah, and he offered upon the altar.
