1 Damals richtete Jesus an das Volk und an seine Jünger folgende Worte: 2 »Auf den Lehrstuhl Moses haben sich die Schriftgelehrten und die Pharisäer gesetzt. 3 Alles nun, was sie euch sagen*, das tut und befolgt, aber nach ihren Werken* richtet euch nicht; denn sie sagen es nur, tun es aber nicht. 4 Sie binden schwere Lasten zusammen und legen sie den Menschen auf die Schultern, sie selbst aber wollen sie mit keinem Finger anrühren. 5 Alle ihre Werke tun sie in der Absicht, von den Leuten gesehen zu werden; denn sie machen ihre Gebetsriemen breit und ihre Mantelquasten (4.Mose 15,38-39) lang; 6 sie lieben den ersten Platz bei den Gastmählern und die Ehrensitze in den Synagogen; 7 sie wollen auf den Märkten* gegrüßt sein und lassen sich von den Leuten gern ›Rabbi‹* nennen. 8 Ihr aber sollt euch nicht ›Meister‹ nennen lassen; denn einer ist euer Meister, ihr alle aber seid Brüder. 9 Und niemand auf Erden sollt ihr euren ›Vater‹ nennen; denn einer ist euer Vater, der im Himmel. 10 Auch ›Lehrer*‹ sollt ihr euch nicht nennen lassen; denn einer ist euer Lehrer*, nämlich Christus. 11 Der Größte unter euch soll euer Diener sein. 12 Wer sich aber selbst erhöht, wird erniedrigt werden, und wer sich selbst erniedrigt, wird erhöht werden.« (Lk 14,11; 18,14) 13 »Wehe euch, Schriftgelehrte und Pharisäer, ihr Heuchler*! Denn ihr verschließt das Himmelreich vor den Menschen. Ihr selbst geht ja nicht hinein, laßt aber auch die nicht hinein, welche hineingehen wollen. 14 [Wehe euch, Schriftgelehrte und Pharisäer, ihr Heuchler! Denn ihr bringt die Häuser der Witwen gierig an euch und verrichtet zum Schein lange Gebete. Darum werdet ihr ein um so strengeres Gericht erfahren.] 15 Wehe euch, Schriftgelehrte und Pharisäer, ihr Heuchler! Denn ihr durchreist Land und Meer, um einen einzigen Glaubensgenossen zu gewinnen; und wenn er es geworden ist, macht ihr aus ihm ein Kind der Hölle, das doppelt so schlimm ist als ihr selbst. 16 Wehe euch, ihr blinden Führer, die ihr sagt*: ›Wenn einer beim Tempel schwört, so hat das nichts zu bedeuten; wer aber beim Gold des Tempels* schwört, der ist gebunden.‹ 17 Ihr Toren und Blinde! Was steht denn höher: das Gold* oder der Tempel, der das Gold erst heilig gemacht hat? 18 Ferner (sagt ihr): ›Wenn einer beim Altar schwört, so hat das nichts zu bedeuten; wer aber bei der Opfergabe schwört, die auf dem Altar liegt, der ist gebunden.‹ 19 Ihr Blinden! Was steht denn höher, die Opfergabe oder der Altar, der die Gabe erst heilig macht? 20 Wer also beim Altar schwört, der schwört bei ihm und bei allem, was auf ihm liegt; 21 und wer beim Tempel schwört, der schwört bei ihm und bei dem, der in ihm wohnt; 22 und wer beim Himmel schwört, der schwört bei Gottes Thron und bei dem, der auf ihm sitzt. 23 Wehe euch, Schriftgelehrte und Pharisäer, ihr Heuchler! Ihr entrichtet den Zehnten von Minze, von Anis und Kümmel, laßt aber das Schwierigere* im Gesetz außer acht, nämlich das Gericht*, die Barmherzigkeit und die Treue*. Diese sollte man üben und jenes nicht außer acht lassen. 24 Ihr blinden Führer, die ihr die Mücke seihet*, aber das Kamel hinuntertrinkt! 25 Wehe euch, Schriftgelehrte und Pharisäer, ihr Heuchler! Denn ihr haltet die Außenseite des Bechers und der Schüssel rein, inwendig aber sind sie gefüllt mit Raub und Unmäßigkeit*. 26 Du blinder Pharisäer! Mache zuerst das rein, was den Inhalt des Bechers bildet, dann wird auch seine Außenseite rein werden (können). 27 Wehe euch, Schriftgelehrte und Pharisäer, ihr Heuchler! Denn ihr gleicht frischgetünchten Gräbern, die von außen schön aussehen, im Innern aber voll von Totengebeinen und lauter Verwesung sind. 28 Ebenso zeigt auch ihr euch den Menschen von außen gerecht, inwendig aber seid ihr voll von Heuchelei und Gesetzlosigkeit*. 29 Wehe euch, Schriftgelehrte und Pharisäer, ihr Heuchler! Denn ihr baut die Grabstätten der Propheten aus und schmückt die Grabdenkmäler der Gerechten 30 und sagt: ›Hätten wir zur Zeit unserer Väter gelebt, wir hätten uns nicht mit ihnen am Blut der Propheten schuldig gemacht!‹ 31 Damit stellt ihr euch selbst das Zeugnis aus, daß ihr die Söhne* der Prophetenmörder seid. 32 So macht denn ihr das Maß (der Schuld) eurer Väter voll! 33 Ihr Schlangen, ihr Otternbrut! Wie wollt ihr dem Strafgericht der Hölle entrinnen?!«

Drohung gegen das seinem Heil widerstrebende, blutbefleckte Volk

34 »Deshalb seht: ich sende zu euch Propheten und Weise und Schriftgelehrte*; von diesen werdet ihr die einen töten und kreuzigen, die anderen in euren Synagogen geißeln und von Stadt zu Stadt verfolgen, 35 damit über euch alles gerechte* Blut komme, das auf der Erde vergossen worden ist, vom Blut des gerechten Abel an (1.Mose 4,8) bis zum Blut Sacharjas*, des Sohnes Berechjas, den ihr zwischen dem Tempelhause und dem Brandopferaltar ermordet habt. 36 Wahrlich ich sage euch: (Die Strafe für) dies alles wird über dieses Geschlecht kommen!«

Jesu Abkehr von der Stadt Jerusalem und Ankündigung seiner Wiederkehr

37 »Jerusalem, Jerusalem, das du die Propheten tötest und die zu dir Gesandten steinigst! Wie oft habe ich deine Kinder um mich sammeln wollen, wie eine Henne ihre Küchlein unter ihre Flügel sammelt; doch ihr habt nicht gewollt. 38 Nunmehr wird euer Haus euch verödet überlassen (Jer 22,5); 39 denn ich sage euch: Ihr werdet mich von jetzt an nicht (mehr) sehen, bis ihr (einst bei meiner Wiederkunft) ausruft: ›Gepriesen sei, der da kommt im Namen des Herrn!‹« (Ps 118,26)

A warning against doing things for the wrong reasons

1 Jesus spoke to the crowds and to his disciples. 2 ‘The teachers of the law and the Pharisees sit in Moses’ seat,’ he said. 3 ‘So you must be careful to do everything they say. But don’t do what they do. They don’t practise what they preach. 4 They tie up heavy loads that are hard to carry. Then they put them on other people’s shoulders. But they themselves aren’t willing to lift a finger to move them. 5 ‘Everything they do is done for others to see. On their foreheads and arms they wear little boxes that hold Scripture verses. They make the boxes very wide. And they make the tassels on their coats very long. 6 They love to sit down in the place of honour at dinners. They also love to have the most important seats in the synagogues. 7 They love to be greeted with respect in the markets. They love it when people call them “Rabbi”. 8 ‘But you shouldn’t be called “Rabbi”. You have only one Teacher, and you are all brothers. 9 Do not call anyone on earth “father”. You have one Father, and he is in heaven. 10 You shouldn’t be called “teacher”. You have one Teacher, and he is the Messiah. 11 The most important person among you will be your servant. 12 People who lift themselves up will be made humble. And people who make themselves humble will be lifted up.

How terrible for the teachers of the law and the Pharisees

13 ‘How terrible it will be for you, teachers of the law and Pharisees! You pretenders! You shut the door of the kingdom of heaven in people’s faces. You yourselves do not enter. And you will not let those enter who are trying to. 15 ‘How terrible for you, teachers of the law and Pharisees! You pretenders! You travel everywhere to win one person to your faith. Then you make them twice as much a child of hell as you are. 16 ‘How terrible for you, blind guides! You say, “If anyone makes a promise in the name of the temple, it means nothing. But anyone who makes a promise in the name of the gold of the temple must keep that promise.” 17 You are blind and foolish! Which is more important? Is it the gold? Or is it the temple that makes the gold holy? 18 You also say, “If anyone makes a promise in the name of the altar, it means nothing. But anyone who makes a promise in the name of the gift on the altar must keep that promise.” 19 You are blind! Which is more important? Is it the gift? Or is it the altar that makes the gift holy? 20 So anyone making a promise in the name of the altar makes a promise in the name of it and everything on it. 21 And anyone making a promise in the name of the temple makes a promise in the name of it and the one who lives in it. 22 And anyone making a promise in the name of heaven makes a promise in the name of God’s throne and the one who sits on it. 23 ‘How terrible for you, teachers of the law and Pharisees! You pretenders! You give God a tenth of your spices, like mint, dill and cummin. But you have not practised the more important things of the law, which are fairness, mercy and faithfulness. You should have practised the last things without failing to do the first. 24 You blind guides! You remove the smallest insect from your food. But you swallow a whole camel! 25 ‘How terrible for you, teachers of the law and Pharisees! You pretenders! You clean the outside of a cup and dish. But on the inside you are full of greed. You only want to satisfy yourselves. 26 Blind Pharisee! First clean the inside of the cup and dish. Then the outside will also be clean. 27 ‘How terrible for you, teachers of the law and Pharisees! You pretenders! You are like tombs that are painted white. They look beautiful on the outside. But on the inside they are full of the bones of the dead. They are also full of other things that are not pure and “clean”. 28 It is the same with you. On the outside you seem to be doing what is right. But on the inside you are full of what is wrong. You pretend to be what you are not. 29 ‘How terrible for you, teachers of the law and Pharisees! You pretenders! You build tombs for the prophets. You decorate the graves of the godly. 30 And you say, “If we had lived in the days of those who lived before us, we wouldn’t have done what they did. We wouldn’t have helped to kill the prophets.” 31 So you are witnesses against yourselves. You admit that you are the children of those who murdered the prophets. 32 So go ahead and finish the sins that those who lived before you started! 33 ‘You nest of poisonous snakes! How will you escape from being sentenced to hell? 34 So I am sending you prophets, wise people, and teachers. You will kill some of them. You will nail some to a cross. Others you will whip in your synagogues. You will chase them from town to town. 35 So you will pay for all the godly people’s blood spilled on earth. I mean from the blood of godly Abel to the blood of Zechariah, the son of Berekiah. Zechariah was the one you murdered between the temple and the altar. 36 What I’m about to tell you is true. All this will happen to those who are now living. 37 ‘Jerusalem! Jerusalem! You kill the prophets and throw stones in order to kill those who are sent to you. Many times I have wanted to gather your people together. I have wanted to be like a hen who gathers her chicks under her wings. And you would not let me! 38 Look, your house is left empty. 39 I tell you, you will not see me again until you say, “Blessed is the one who comes in the name of the Lord.” ’
