Die fünfte Plage: Viehpest

1 Da sprach der HERR zu Mose: Geh hinein zum Pharao und sage zu ihm: So spricht der HERR, der Gott der Hebräer: Lass mein Volk ziehen, dass sie mir dienen! 2 Wenn du dich weigerst und sie weiter aufhältst, 3 siehe, so wird die Hand des HERRN kommen über dein Vieh auf dem Felde, über die Pferde, Esel, Kamele, Rinder und Schafe, eine sehr schwere Pest. 4 Aber der HERR wird einen Unterschied machen zwischen dem Vieh Israels und Ägyptens, dass nichts sterbe von allem, was die Israeliten haben. 5 Und der HERR bestimmte eine Zeit und sprach: Morgen wird der HERR solches an dem Lande tun. 6 Und der HERR tat es am andern Morgen; da starb alles Vieh der Ägypter, aber von dem Vieh der Israeliten starb nicht eins. 7 Und der Pharao sandte hin, und siehe, es war von dem Vieh Israels nicht eins gestorben. Aber das Herz des Pharao wurde verstockt, und er ließ das Volk nicht ziehen.

Die sechste Plage: Blattern

8 Da sprach der HERR zu Mose und Aaron: Füllt eure Hände mit Ruß aus dem Ofen, und Mose werfe ihn vor dem Pharao gen Himmel, 9 dass er über ganz Ägyptenland staube und böse Blattern aufbrechen an den Menschen und am Vieh in ganz Ägyptenland. 10 Und sie nahmen Ruß aus dem Ofen und traten vor den Pharao, und Mose warf den Ruß gen Himmel. Da brachen auf böse Blattern an den Menschen und am Vieh. 11 Auch die Zauberer konnten nicht vor Mose treten wegen der bösen Blattern; denn es waren an den Zauberern ebenso böse Blattern wie an allen Ägyptern. 12 Aber der HERR verstockte das Herz des Pharao, dass er nicht auf sie hörte, wie denn der HERR zu Mose gesagt hatte.

Die siebente Plage: Hagel

13 Da sprach der HERR zu Mose: Mach dich morgen früh auf und tritt vor den Pharao und sage zu ihm: So spricht der HERR, der Gott der Hebräer: Lass mein Volk ziehen, dass es mir diene; 14 sonst werde ich diesmal alle meine Plagen über dich selbst senden, über deine Großen und über dein Volk, damit du innewirst, dass meinesgleichen nicht ist in allen Landen. 15 Denn ich hätte schon meine Hand ausrecken und dich und dein Volk mit Pest schlagen können, dass du von der Erde vertilgt würdest. 16 Aber dazu habe ich dich erhalten, dass meine Kraft an dir erscheine und mein Name verkündigt werde in allen Landen. 17 Du stellst dich noch immer wider mein Volk und willst es nicht ziehen lassen. 18 Siehe, ich will morgen um diese Zeit einen sehr großen Hagel fallen lassen, wie er noch nie in Ägypten gewesen ist von der Zeit an, als es gegründet wurde, bis heute. 19 Und nun sende hin und verwahre dein Vieh und alles, was du auf dem Felde hast. Denn alle Menschen und das Vieh, alles, was auf dem Felde gefunden und nicht in die Häuser gebracht wird, muss sterben, wenn der Hagel auf sie fällt. 20 Wer nun von den Großen des Pharao das Wort des HERRN fürchtete, der ließ seine Knechte und sein Vieh in die Häuser fliehen. 21 Wessen Herz sich aber nicht an des HERRN Wort kehrte, der ließ seine Knechte und sein Vieh auf dem Felde. 22 Da sprach der HERR zu Mose: Recke deine Hand aus gen Himmel, dass es hagelt über ganz Ägyptenland, über Menschen, über Vieh und über alles Gewächs auf dem Felde in Ägyptenland. 23 Da streckte Mose seinen Stab gen Himmel, und der HERR ließ donnern und hageln und Feuer schoss auf die Erde nieder. So ließ der HERR Hagel fallen auf Ägyptenland, 24 und Blitze zuckten dazwischen und der Hagel war so schwer, wie er noch nie in ganz Ägyptenland gewesen war, seitdem die Leute dort wohnen. 25 Und der Hagel erschlug in ganz Ägyptenland alles, was auf dem Felde war, Menschen und Vieh, und zerschlug alles Gewächs auf dem Felde und zerbrach alle Bäume auf dem Felde. 26 Nur im Lande Goschen, wo die Israeliten waren, da hagelte es nicht. 27 Da schickte der Pharao hin und ließ Mose und Aaron rufen und sprach zu ihnen: Diesmal hab ich mich versündigt; der HERR ist im Recht, ich aber und mein Volk sind schuldig. 28 Bittet aber den HERRN, dass es genug sei mit dem Donnern Gottes und dem Hagel, so will ich euch ziehen lassen, dass ihr nicht länger hierbleiben müsst. 29 Mose sprach zu ihm: Wenn ich zur Stadt hinauskomme, will ich meine Hände ausbreiten zum HERRN, so wird der Donner aufhören und kein Hagel mehr fallen, damit du innewirst, dass die Erde des HERRN ist. 30 Ich weiß aber: Du und deine Großen, ihr fürchtet euch noch nicht vor Gott dem HERRN. 31 So wurden zerschlagen der Flachs und die Gerste, denn die Gerste stand in Ähren und der Flachs in Blüte. 32 Aber der Weizen und der Dinkel wurden nicht zerschlagen, denn es ist Spätgetreide. 33 So ging nun Mose von dem Pharao zur Stadt hinaus und breitete seine Hände aus zum HERRN, und Donner und Hagel hörten auf, und der Regen troff nicht mehr auf die Erde. 34 Als aber der Pharao sah, dass Regen, Donner und Hagel aufhörten, versündigte er sich weiter und verhärtete sein Herz, er und seine Großen. 35 So wurde des Pharao Herz verstockt, dass er die Israeliten nicht ziehen ließ, wie der HERR durch Mose gesagt hatte.

The plague on livestock

1 Then the LORD spoke to Moses. He said, ‘Go to Pharaoh. Tell him, “The LORD, the God of the Hebrews, says, ‘Let my people go. Then they will be able to worship me. 2 Do not refuse to let them go. Do not keep holding them back. 3 If you refuse, my powerful hand will bring a terrible plague on you. I will strike your livestock in the fields. I will strike your horses, donkeys, camels, cattle, sheep and goats. 4 But I will treat Israel’s livestock differently from yours. No animal that belongs to the people of Israel will die.’ ” ’ 5 The LORD set a time for the plague. He said, ‘Tomorrow I will send it on the land.’ 6 So the next day the LORD sent it. All the livestock of the Egyptians died. But not one animal that belonged to the Israelites died. 7 Pharaoh searched and found out what had happened. He discovered that not even one animal that belonged to the Israelites had died. But he was still very stubborn. He wouldn’t let the people go.

The plague of boils

8 Then the LORD spoke to Moses and Aaron. He said, ‘Take handfuls of ashes from a furnace. Let Moses toss them into the air in front of Pharaoh. 9 The ashes will turn into fine dust over the whole land of Egypt. Then painful boils will break out on people and animals all over the land. Their bodies will be covered with them.’ 10 So Moses and Aaron took ashes from a furnace and stood in front of Pharaoh. Moses tossed them into the air. Then boils broke out on people and animals alike. 11 The bodies of all the Egyptians were covered with boils. The magicians couldn’t stand in front of Moses because of the boils that were all over them. 12 But the LORD made Pharaoh stubborn. Pharaoh wouldn’t listen to Moses and Aaron, just as the LORD had said to Moses.

The plague of hail

13 Then the LORD spoke to Moses. He said, ‘Get up early in the morning. Go to Pharaoh and say to him, “The LORD, the God of the Hebrews, says, ‘Let my people go. Then they will be able to worship me. 14 If you do not let them go, I will send the full force of my plagues against you this time. They will strike your officials and your people. Then you will know that there is no one like me in the whole earth. 15 By now I could have reached out my hand. I could have struck you and your people with a plague that would have wiped you off the earth. 16 But I had a special reason for making you king. I decided to show you my power. I wanted my name to become known everywhere on earth. 17 But you are still against my people. You will not let them go. 18 So at this time tomorrow I will send the worst hailstorm ever to fall on Egypt in its entire history. 19 Give an order now to bring your livestock inside to a safe place. Bring in everything that is outside. The hail will fall on all the people and animals that are left outside. They will die.’ ” ’ 20 The officials of Pharaoh who had respect for what the LORD had said obeyed him. They hurried to bring their slaves and their livestock inside. 21 But others didn’t pay attention to what the LORD had said. They left their slaves and livestock outside. 22 Then the LORD spoke to Moses. He said, ‘Reach out your hand towards the sky. Then hail will fall all over Egypt. It will beat down on people and animals alike. It will strike everything growing in the fields of Egypt.’ 23 Moses reached out his walking stick towards the sky. Then the LORD sent thunder and hail. Lightning flashed down to the ground. The LORD rained hail on the land of Egypt. 24 Hail fell and lightning flashed to and fro. It was the worst storm in Egypt’s entire history. 25 Hail struck everything in the fields all over Egypt. It fell on people and animals alike. It beat down everything growing in the fields. It tore all the leaves off the trees. 26 The only place it didn’t hail was in the area of Goshen. That’s where the people of Israel were. 27 Then Pharaoh sent for Moses and Aaron. ‘This time I’ve sinned,’ he said to them. ‘The LORD has done what is right. I and my people have done what is wrong. 28 Pray to the LORD, because we’ve had enough thunder and hail. I’ll let you and your people go. You don’t have to stay here any longer.’ 29 Moses replied, ‘When I’ve left the city, I’ll lift up my hands and pray to the LORD. The thunder will stop. There won’t be any more hail. Then you will know that the earth belongs to the LORD. 30 But I know that you and your officials still don’t have any respect for the LORD God.’ 31 The barley was ripe. The flax was in bloom. So they were both destroyed. 32 But the wheat and spelt weren’t destroyed. That’s because they ripen later. 33 Then Moses left Pharaoh and went out of the city. Moses lifted up his hands and prayed to the LORD. The thunder and hail stopped. The rain didn’t pour down on the land any longer. 34 Pharaoh saw that the rain, hail and thunder had stopped. So he sinned again. He and his officials became stubborn. 35 So Pharaoh was stubborn. He wouldn’t let the people of Israel go, just as the LORD had said through Moses.
