1Da sprach der HERR zu Mose: Geh hinein zum Pharao; denn ich habe sein und seiner Großen Herz verhärtet, auf dass ich diese meine Zeichen unter ihnen tue2und auf dass du verkündigst vor den Ohren deiner Kinder und deiner Kindeskinder, wie ich mit den Ägyptern verfahren bin und welche Zeichen ich unter ihnen getan habe, damit ihr wisst: Ich bin der HERR.3So gingen Mose und Aaron hinein zum Pharao und sprachen zu ihm: So spricht der HERR, der Gott der Hebräer: Wie lange weigerst du dich, dich vor mir zu demütigen? Lass mein Volk ziehen, dass es mir diene!4Weigerst du dich aber, mein Volk ziehen zu lassen, siehe, so will ich morgen Heuschrecken kommen lassen über dein Gebiet,5dass sie das Land so bedecken, dass man von ihm nichts mehr sehen kann. Und sie sollen fressen, was euch noch übrig und verschont geblieben ist von dem Hagel, und sollen alle Bäume kahl fressen, die wieder sprossen auf dem Felde;6und sie sollen füllen deine Häuser und die Häuser deiner Großen und aller Ägypter, wie es nicht gesehen haben deine Väter und deiner Väter Väter, seit sie auf Erden waren bis auf diesen Tag. Und er wandte sich und ging vom Pharao hinaus.7Da sprachen die Großen des Pharao zu ihm: Wie lange soll dieser Mann uns Verderben bringen? Lass die Leute ziehen, dass sie dem HERRN, ihrem Gott, dienen. Erkennst du denn nicht, dass Ägypten verloren ist?8Da wurden Mose und Aaron wieder vor den Pharao gebracht. Der sprach zu ihnen: Geht hin und dient dem HERRN, eurem Gott. Wer von euch soll aber hinziehen?9Mose sprach: Wir wollen ziehen mit Jung und Alt, mit Söhnen und Töchtern, mit Schafen und Rindern; denn wir haben ein Fest des HERRN.10Er sprach zu ihnen: O ja, der HERR sei mit euch, so gewiss wie ich euch und eure Kinder ziehen lasse! Ihr seht doch selbst, dass ihr Böses vorhabt!11Nein, nur ihr Männer zieht hin und dient dem HERRN! Denn das ist es doch, was ihr begehrt habt. Und man stieß sie hinaus vom Pharao.12Da sprach der HERR zu Mose: Recke deine Hand über Ägyptenland, dass Heuschrecken auf Ägyptenland kommen und alles auffressen, was im Lande wächst, alles, was der Hagel übrig gelassen hat.13Mose streckte seinen Stab über Ägyptenland, und der HERR trieb einen Ostwind ins Land, den ganzen Tag und die ganze Nacht. Und am Morgen führte der Ostwind die Heuschrecken herbei.14Und sie kamen über ganz Ägyptenland und ließen sich nieder überall in Ägypten, so viele, wie nie zuvor gewesen sind noch hinfort sein werden.15Denn sie bedeckten den Boden des ganzen Landes, und das Land wurde finster. Und sie fraßen alles, was im Lande wuchs, und alle Früchte auf den Bäumen, die der Hagel übrig gelassen hatte, und ließen nichts Grünes übrig an den Bäumen und auf dem Felde in ganz Ägyptenland.16Da ließ der Pharao eilends Mose und Aaron rufen und sprach: Ich habe mich versündigt an dem HERRN, eurem Gott, und an euch.17Und nun, vergib mir meine Sünde nur noch diesmal, und bittet den HERRN, euren Gott, dass er doch diesen Tod von mir wegnehme.18Und er ging hinaus vom Pharao und betete zum HERRN.19Da wendete der HERR den Wind, sodass er sehr stark aus Westen kam; der hob die Heuschrecken auf und warf sie ins Schilfmeer, dass nicht eine übrig blieb in ganz Ägypten.20Aber der HERR verstockte das Herz des Pharao, dass er die Israeliten nicht ziehen ließ.
Die neunte Plage: Finsternis
21Da sprach der HERR zu Mose: Recke deine Hand gen Himmel, dass eine solche Finsternis werde in Ägyptenland, dass man sie greifen kann.22Und Mose reckte seine Hand gen Himmel. Da ward eine so dicke Finsternis in ganz Ägyptenland drei Tage lang,23dass niemand den andern sah noch weggehen konnte von dem Ort, wo er gerade war, drei Tage lang. Aber bei allen Israeliten war es licht in ihren Wohnungen.24Da rief der Pharao nach Mose und sprach: Zieht hin und dient dem HERRN! Nur eure Schafe und Rinder sollen hierbleiben; eure Frauen und Kinder aber dürfen mit euch ziehen.25Mose sprach: Willst du uns denn Schlachtopfer und Brandopfer mitgeben, die wir unserm Gott, dem HERRN, darbringen?26Auch unser Vieh soll mit uns gehen – nicht eine Klaue darf dahintenbleiben –; denn davon müssen wir nehmen zum Dienst unseres Gottes, des HERRN. Wir wissen nicht, womit wir dem HERRN dienen sollen, bis wir dorthin kommen.27Aber der HERR verstockte das Herz des Pharao, dass er sie nicht ziehen lassen wollte.28Und der Pharao sprach zu ihm: Geh von mir und hüte dich, dass du mir nicht mehr vor die Augen kommst; denn an dem Tage, da du mir vor die Augen kommst, sollst du sterben.29Mose antwortete: Wie du gesagt hast; ich werde dir nicht mehr vor die Augen kommen.

The plague of locusts
1Then the LORD said to Moses, ‘Go to Pharaoh. I have made him stubborn. I have also made his officials stubborn so I can perform my signs among them.2Then you will be able to tell your children and grandchildren how hard I was on the Egyptians. You can tell them I performed my signs among the people of Egypt. And all of you will know that I am the LORD.’3So Moses and Aaron went to Pharaoh. They said to him, ‘The LORD, the God of the Hebrews, says, “How long will you refuse to obey me? Let my people go. Then they will be able to worship me.4If you refuse to let them go, I will bring locusts into your country tomorrow.5They will cover the ground so that it can’t be seen. They will eat what little you have left after the hail. That includes every tree growing in your fields.6They will fill your houses. They will be in the homes of all your officials and your people. Your parents and your people before them have never seen anything like it as long as they have lived here.” ’ Then Moses turned round and left Pharaoh.7Pharaoh’s officials said to him, ‘How long will this man be a trap for us? Let the people go. Then they’ll be able to worship the LORD their God. After everything that’s happened, don’t you realise that Egypt is destroyed?’8Moses and Aaron were brought back to Pharaoh. ‘Go. Worship the LORD your God,’ he said. ‘But tell me who will be going.’9Moses answered, ‘We’ll go with our young people and old people. We’ll go with our sons and daughters. We’ll take our flocks and herds. We are supposed to hold a feast to honour the LORD.’10Pharaoh said, ‘Suppose I ever let you go, along with your women and children. Then the LORD really will be with all of you! Clearly you are planning to do something bad.11No! I’ll only allow the men to go and worship the LORD. After all, that’s what you have been asking for.’ Then Pharaoh drove Moses and Aaron out of his sight.12The LORD said to Moses, ‘Reach out your hand over Egypt so that locusts cover the land. They will eat up everything growing in the fields. They will eat up everything left by the hail.’13So Moses reached out his walking stick over Egypt. Then the LORD made an east wind blow across the land. It blew all that day and all that night. By morning the wind had brought the locusts.14Large numbers of them came down in every part of Egypt. There had never been a plague of locusts like it before. And there will never be one like it again.15The locusts covered the ground until it was black. They ate up everything left after the hail. They ate up everything growing in the fields. They ate up the fruit on the trees. There was nothing green left on any tree or plant in the whole land of Egypt.16Pharaoh quickly sent for Moses and Aaron. He said, ‘I have sinned against the LORD your God. I’ve also sinned against you.17Now forgive my sin one more time. Pray to the LORD your God to take this deadly plague away from me.’18After Moses left Pharaoh, he prayed to the LORD.19The LORD changed the wind to a very strong west wind. It picked up the locusts. It blew them into the Red Sea. Not even one locust was left anywhere in Egypt.20But the LORD made Pharaoh stubborn. So Pharaoh wouldn’t let the people of Israel go.
The plague of darkness
21The LORD spoke to Moses. He said, ‘Reach out your hand towards the sky so that darkness spreads over Egypt. It will be so dark that people can feel it.’22So Moses reached out his hand towards the sky. Then complete darkness covered Egypt for three days.23No one could see anyone else or go anywhere for three days. But all the people of Israel had light where they lived.24Then Pharaoh sent for Moses. He said to him, ‘Go. Worship the LORD. Even your women and children can go with you. Just leave your flocks and herds behind.’25But Moses said, ‘You must allow us to take our animals. We need to offer them as sacrifices and burnt offerings to the LORD our God.26Our livestock must also go with us. We have to use some of them to worship the LORD our God. We can’t leave even one animal behind. Until we get there, we won’t know what we are supposed to use to worship the LORD.’27But the LORD made Pharaoh stubborn. So he wouldn’t let the people go.28Pharaoh said to Moses, ‘Get out of my sight! Make sure you don’t come to see me again! If you do, you will die.’29‘I’ll do just as you say,’ Moses replied. ‘I will never come to see you again.’
