1 The word that Jeremiah the prophet spake unto Baruch the son of Neriah, when he had written these words in a book at the mouth of Jeremiah, in the fourth year of Jehoiakim the son of Josiah king of Judah, saying, 2 Thus saith the LORD, the God of Israel, unto thee, O Baruch; 3 Thou didst say, Woe is me now! for the LORD hath added grief to my sorrow; I fainted in my sighing, and I find no rest. 4 Thus shalt thou say unto him, The LORD saith thus; Behold, that which I have built will I break down, and that which I have planted I will pluck up, even this whole land. 5 And seekest thou great things for thyself? seek them not: for, behold, I will bring evil upon all flesh, saith the LORD: but thy life will I give unto thee for a prey in all places whither thou goest.

1 (Dies ist) das Wort, das der Prophet Jeremia an Baruch, den Sohn Nerijas richtete, als dieser im vierten Regierungsjahre Jojakims, des Sohnes Josias, des Königs von Juda, die betreffenden Worte* so, wie Jeremia sie ihm vorsagte, in ein Buch niedergeschrieben hatte (vgl. Kap. 36); das Wort lautete: 2 »So hat der HERR, der Gott Israels, in bezug auf dich, Baruch, gesprochen: 3 ›Du klagst: O wehe mir! Der HERR fügt noch Kummer zu meinem Schmerz hinzu! Müde bin ich von allem Seufzen und finde keine Ruhe!‹ 4 Sage zu ihm: ›So hat der HERR gesprochen: Wisse wohl: was ich selbst gebaut habe, das breche ich wieder ab, und was ich gepflanzt habe, das reiße ich wieder aus [und zwar betrifft dies die ganze Erde]; 5 und da willst du Großes für dich verlangen? Verlange es nicht! Denn bedenke wohl: ich verhänge Unglück über alles Fleisch*‹, – so lautet der Ausspruch des HERRN –; ›dir aber gewähre ich, mit dem Leben davonzukommen an allen Orten, wohin du dich begeben wirst!‹«
