1 The king' heart is in the hand of the LORD, as the rivers of water: he turneth it whithersoever he will. 2 Every way of a man is right in his own eyes: but the LORD pondereth the hearts. 3 To do justice and judgment is more acceptable to the LORD than sacrifice. 4 An high look, and a proud heart, and the plowing of the wicked, is sin. 5 The thoughts of the diligent tend only to plenteousness; but of every one that is hasty only to want. 6 The getting of treasures by a lying tongue is a vanity tossed to and fro of them that seek death. 7 The robbery of the wicked shall destroy them; because they refuse to do judgment. 8 The way of man is froward and strange: but as for the pure, his work is right. 9 It is better to dwell in a corner of the housetop, than with a brawling woman in a wide house. 10 The soul of the wicked desireth evil: his neighbour findeth no favour in his eyes. 11 When the scorner is punished, the simple is made wise: and when the wise is instructed, he receiveth knowledge. 12 The righteous man wisely considereth the house of the wicked: but God overthroweth the wicked for their wickedness. 13 Whoso stoppeth his ears at the cry of the poor, he also shall cry himself, but shall not be heard. 14 A gift in secret pacifieth anger: and a reward in the bosom strong wrath. 15 It is joy to the just to do judgment: but destruction shall be to the workers of iniquity. 16 The man that wandereth out of the way of understanding shall remain in the congregation of the dead. 17 He that loveth pleasure shall be a poor man: he that loveth wine and oil shall not be rich. 18 The wicked shall be a ransom for the righteous, and the transgressor for the upright. 19 It is better to dwell in the wilderness, than with a contentious and an angry woman. 20 There is treasure to be desired and oil in the dwelling of the wise; but a foolish man spendeth it up. 21 He that followeth after righteousness and mercy findeth life, righteousness, and honour. 22 A wise man scaleth the city of the mighty, and casteth down the strength of the confidence thereof. 23 Whoso keepeth his mouth and his tongue keepeth his soul from troubles. 24 Proud and haughty scorner is his name, who dealeth in proud wrath. 25 The desire of the slothful killeth him; for his hands refuse to labour. 26 He coveteth greedily all the day long: but the righteous giveth and spareth not. 27 The sacrifice of the wicked is abomination: how much more, when he bringeth it with a wicked mind? 28 A false witness shall perish: but the man that heareth speaketh constantly. 29 A wicked man hardeneth his face: but as for the upright, he directeth his way. 30 There is no wisdom nor understanding nor counsel against the LORD. 31 The horse is prepared against the day of battle: but safety is of the LORD.

1 Herren styr kungarnas tankar lika lätt som han leder vattenbäckar. Han för dem i den riktning han vill. 2 En människa tycker att allt hon gör är rätt, men Herren prövar hennes motiv. 3 Herren ser hellre att vi är rättvisa och handlar rätt mot andra än att vi offrar till honom. 4 De som inte vill veta av Gud är stolta och högfärdiga. Därför leder allt vad de gör till synd. 5 Den som arbetar utan att ge upp når framgång, men den som gör något hastigt och oöverlagt drabbas av förluster. 6 De rikedomar som man skaffar sig genom bedrägeri består aldrig. Varför ska man då ta den risken? 7 Eftersom de ogudaktiga inte gör det som är rätt, kommer våldet tillbaka över dem själva och förgör dem. 8 Den skuldtyngdes väg är svårframkomlig, men den som är oskyldig kan lugnt gå sin väg fram. 9 Det är bättre att bo i ett litet rum på vinden än att dela en hel våning med en grälsjuk kvinna. 10 Den ogudaktige drar sig inte för att skada andra. Han har ingen tanke på att visa medmänsklighet. 11 Den vise lär sig av att lyssna. Den oförnuftige kan bara lära sig av att se på hur de hånfulla straffas. 12 Gud, som är rättfärdig, ser vad som försiggår i de ogudaktigas hus. Därför låter han olyckan drabba dem. 13 Den som håller för öronen när de fattiga ropar på hjälp, kommer att stå ensam när han själv behöver något. 14 Den som är arg tappar hakan om man ger honom en gåva! 15 När rättvisan gäller kan de uppriktiga vara glada, men för de ogudaktiga är det en prövning. 16 Den som mister sitt förnuft kommer snart att vara död! 17 Den som älskar nöjen blir fattig. Ett utsvävande liv med vin och lyx gör ingen rik. 18 Rättvisan kommer att segra till sist. Inte de rättfärdiga utan de gudlösa kommer att drabbas av olyckan. 19 Det är bättre att leva ensam i öknen än bo ihop med en tjatig och besvärlig kvinna. 20 Den vise sparar för framtiden, men dåren gör genast av med allt han får. 21 Den som försöker vara god, kärleksfull och vänlig mot andra finner livet, rättfärdigheten och äran. 22 Den som är klok kan till och med inta en befäst stad och riva ner de murar som invånarna satt sitt hopp till. 23 Tänk på vad du säger, så hamnar du inte i svårigheter. 24 Den som hånfullt sätter sig över allt är högfärdig och fräck. 25 Den late längtar efter mycket, men han är för bekväm för att arbeta. Han vill ha allt, medan den gudfruktige däremot längtar efter att få ge. 27 Gud avskyr offergåvor från människor som inte vill veta av honom, särskilt om de har orena motiv. 28 Ett falskt vittne kommer man i längden inte att tro på, men den som håller sig till sanningen lyssnar man alltid till. 29 Den rättfärdige är säker på sin sak, men den ogudaktige måste hela tiden försöka övertyga sin omgivning. 30 Ingen, hur smart eller välutbildad han än är, eller vilken insikt han än har, kan stå emot Herren. 31 Förbered dig gärna grundligt för drabbningen, men segern kommer från Herren!
