1 This is a true saying, If a man desire the office of a bishop, he desireth a good work.

2 A bishop then must be blameless, the husband of one wife, vigilant, sober, of good behaviour, given to hospitality, apt to teach;

3 Not given to wine, no striker, not greedy of filthy lucre; but patient, not a brawler, not covetous;

4 One that ruleth well his own house, having his children in subjection with all gravity;

5 (For if a man know not how to rule his own house, how shall he take care of the church of God?)

6 Not a novice, lest being lifted up with pride he fall into the condemnation of the devil.

7 Moreover he must have a good report of them which are without; lest he fall into reproach and the snare of the devil.

8 Likewise must the deacons be grave, not doubletongued, not given to much wine, not greedy of filthy lucre;

9 Holding the mystery of the faith in a pure conscience.

10 And let these also first be proved; then let them use the office of a deacon, being found blameless.

11 Even so must their wives be grave, not slanderers, sober, faithful in all things.

12 Let the deacons be the husbands of one wife, ruling their children and their own houses well.

13 For they that have used the office of a deacon well purchase to themselves a good degree, and great boldness in the faith which is in Christ Jesus.

14 These things write I unto thee, hoping to come unto thee shortly:

15 But if I tarry long, that thou mayest know how thou oughtest to behave thyself in the house of God, which is the church of the living God, the pillar and ground of the truth.

16 And without controversy great is the mystery of godliness: God was manifest in the flesh, justified in the Spirit, seen of angels, preached unto the Gentiles, believed on in the world, received up into glory.

Ledare i församlingen

1 Den som vill bli ledare för en församling strävar efter en viktig uppgift.

2 Därför ska det inte finnas något att anmärka på hos en ledare. Han ska vara trogen i sitt äktenskap, sund, självbehärskad och korrekt i sitt uppträdande. Han ska tycka om att ta emot gäster och kunna undervisa.

3 Han får inte missbruka alkohol eller vara våldsam utan måste vara mild och vänlig och inte ställa till med bråk. Han får inte heller älska pengar.

4 Han måste kunna leda sin egen familj och uppfostra sina barn så att de lyder och visar respekt,

5 för om han inte kan leda sin egen familj, hur ska han då kunna leda Guds församling?

6 Han får inte just ha blivit troende, för då kan han bli mallig över att ha blivit utvald så snabbt och får samma dom som djävulen en gång fick.*

7 Han ska ha ett gott rykte bland människorna utanför församlingen, så att han inte blir hånad och luras av djävulen att synda.

8 På samma sätt ska medhjälparna vara ärliga och värda respekt. De får inte dricka mycket alkohol och inte ha begär efter pengar.

9 De måste hålla fast vid de sanningar Gud har visat oss om vår tro, och de måste ha rena motiv för allt de gör.

10 Innan de får börja som medhjälpare måste de granskas, och om ingen har något att kritisera dem för kan de börja sin uppgift.

11 På samma sätt ska de kvinnliga medhjälparna* vara värda respekt. De får inte tala illa om människor, utan måste vara sunda och pålitliga i allt de gör.

12 En medhjälpare måste vara trogen i sitt äktenskap och kunna leda sina barn och sitt hem på ett bra sätt.

13 De som sköter sin uppgift väl som medhjälpare kommer att bli respekterade av andra och kan utan att skämmas berätta om sin tro på Jesus Kristus.

Sanningen om vår tro

14 Jag hoppas att snart kunna resa till dig, Timotheos, men om jag dröjer, har jag nu gett dig några riktlinjer för hur allt ska vara ordnat i Guds hushåll, församlingen, som tillhör den Gud som lever. Församlingen är ju den pelare och stadiga grund som bär upp sanningen om Jesus.

16 Och alla måste erkänna att vår tro avslöjar en fantastisk hemlighet: Gud kom till jorden som människaoch Guds Ande visade att han var utan synd, han sågs av änglaroch budskapet om honom spreds till jordens folk, människor trodde på honomoch han återvände till himlen igen.
