1 Mijn zoon, onthoud alles wat ik je leer en bewaar mijn geboden in je hart. 2 Zij zullen je leven verlengen, goed als ze zijn voor lichaam en geest. 3 Houd liefde en trouw in ere! Draag Gods geboden als een sieraad en prent ze in je hart en geheugen. 4 Dat levert je genegenheid en instemming van God en de mensen op. 5 Vertrouw met heel je hart op de HERE en verwacht het niet van je eigen verstand. 6 Laat God delen in alles wat je doet, dan kan Hij je levensweg bepalen. 7 Ga niet op je eigen oordeel af, maar koester ontzag voor de HERE en ga het verkeerde uit de weg. 8 Dat werkt als een medicijn voor je lichaam en dringt diep in de botten door. 9 Vereer de HERE met wat je bezit en geef Hem zijn deel van je inkomsten. 10 Dan zullen je schuren te klein zijn en vloeit de most over de randen van je perskuip. 11 Mijn zoon, ga niet voorbij aan de tucht van de HERE en laat de moed niet zakken als Hij je straft. 12 Want de HERE straft degene van wie Hij houdt, net zoals een vader zijn zoon straft die hij liefheeft. 13 Gelukkig is de mens die de wijsheid zoekt en haar vindt, en die met verstand leert leven. 14 Want wijsheid brengt meer op dan handel in zilver, meer dan het delven van goud. 15 Zij is meer en beter dan edelstenen, meer waard dan alles waarvan je ooit droomt. 16 Zij gaat gepaard met hoge ouderdom, rijkdom en aanzien. 17 Want wijsheid brengt liefde voort en is een voedingsbodem voor vrede en welzijn. 18 De wijsheid is als een boom van het leven voor wie haar bezit. Gelukkig zijn zij die zich aan de wijsheid vasthouden. 19 Want met wijsheid maakte de HERE de aarde en het heelal getuigt van zijn verstand. 20 Met zijn kennis gaf Hij het diepe water vorm, maakte Hij wolken die de dauw op aarde brengen. 21 Mijn zoon, verlies de wijsheid niet uit het oog! Houd haar vast en toon bedachtzaamheid bij alles wat je doet. 22 Dat geeft leven aan je ziel en siert je in ieders ogen. 23 Dat geeft je zicht op je levensweg, zodat je niet hoeft te struikelen. 24 Als je gaat liggen, zal niets of niemand je doen schrikken, je kunt gaan liggen en rustig slapen. 25 Wees niet bang voor plotselinge schrik, laat je niet van de wijs brengen door de ondergang van de goddelozen. 26 Want de HERE zal een betrouwbaar helper blijken te zijn. Hij zal niet toestaan dat je iets overkomt. 27 Geef, als je kunt, ieder wat hem toekomt. 28 Zeg niet tegen je naaste: ‘Kom morgen maar terug,’ als je hem het gevraagde ook direct kunt geven. 29 En beraam geen kwade plannen tegen iemand die volledig op jou vertrouwt. 30 Bind niet zonder reden de strijd aan met iemand die je niets in de weg heeft gelegd. 31 Wees niet jaloers op iemand die met ellebogenwerk in deze maatschappij vooruitkomt. Dat mag geen voorbeeld voor je zijn. 32 Van zo iemand heeft de HERE een afkeer. Vertrouwelijk omgaan doet Hij alleen met mensen die oprecht zijn. 33 De HERE vervloekt het huis van de goddelozen, maar zegent het huis van de rechtvaardigen. 34 Terwijl Hij spotters bespot, is Hij genadig voor de zachtmoedigen. 35 Voor wijzen is eer weggelegd, voor dwazen schande.

Trust in the Lord with All Your Heart

1 My son, do not forget my teaching, but let your heart keep my commandments, 2 for length of days and years of life and peace they will add to you. 3 Let not steadfast love and faithfulness forsake you; bind them around your neck; write them on the tablet of your heart. 4 So you will find favor and good success* in the sight of God and man. 5 Trust in the Lord with all your heart, and do not lean on your own understanding. 6 In all your ways acknowledge him, and he will make straight your paths. 7 Be not wise in your own eyes; fear the Lord, and turn away from evil. 8 It will be healing to your flesh* and refreshment* to your bones. 9 Honor the Lord with your wealth and with the firstfruits of all your produce; 10 then your barns will be filled with plenty, and your vats will be bursting with wine. 11 My son, do not despise the Lord’s discipline or be weary of his reproof, 12 for the Lord reproves him whom he loves, as a father the son in whom he delights.

Blessed Is the One Who Finds Wisdom

13 Blessed is the one who finds wisdom, and the one who gets understanding, 14 for the gain from her is better than gain from silver and her profit better than gold. 15 She is more precious than jewels, and nothing you desire can compare with her. 16 Long life is in her right hand; in her left hand are riches and honor. 17 Her ways are ways of pleasantness, and all her paths are peace. 18 She is a tree of life to those who lay hold of her; those who hold her fast are called blessed. 19 The Lord by wisdom founded the earth; by understanding he established the heavens; 20 by his knowledge the deeps broke open, and the clouds drop down the dew. 21 My son, do not lose sight of these— keep sound wisdom and discretion, 22 and they will be life for your soul and adornment for your neck. 23 Then you will walk on your way securely, and your foot will not stumble. 24 If you lie down, you will not be afraid; when you lie down, your sleep will be sweet. 25 Do not be afraid of sudden terror or of the ruin* of the wicked, when it comes, 26 for the Lord will be your confidence and will keep your foot from being caught. 27 Do not withhold good from those to whom it is due,* when it is in your power to do it. 28 Do not say to your neighbor, “Go, and come again, tomorrow I will give it”—when you have it with you. 29 Do not plan evil against your neighbor, who dwells trustingly beside you. 30 Do not contend with a man for no reason, when he has done you no harm. 31 Do not envy a man of violence and do not choose any of his ways, 32 for the devious person is an abomination to the Lord, but the upright are in his confidence. 33 The Lord’s curse is on the house of the wicked, but he blesses the dwelling of the righteous. 34 Toward the scorners he is scornful, but to the humble he gives favor.* 35 The wise will inherit honor, but fools get* disgrace.
