Jesus Feeds the Five Thousand

1 After this Jesus went away to the other side of the Sea of Galilee, which is the Sea of Tiberias. 2 And a large crowd was following him, because they saw the signs that he was doing on the sick. 3 Jesus went up on the mountain, and there he sat down with his disciples. 4 Now the Passover, the feast of the Jews, was at hand. 5 Lifting up his eyes, then, and seeing that a large crowd was coming toward him, Jesus said to Philip, “Where are we to buy bread, so that these people may eat?” 6 He said this to test him, for he himself knew what he would do. 7 Philip answered him, “Two hundred denarii* worth of bread would not be enough for each of them to get a little.” 8 One of his disciples, Andrew, Simon Peter’s brother, said to him, 9 “There is a boy here who has five barley loaves and two fish, but what are they for so many?” 10 Jesus said, “Have the people sit down.” Now there was much grass in the place. So the men sat down, about five thousand in number. 11 Jesus then took the loaves, and when he had given thanks, he distributed them to those who were seated. So also the fish, as much as they wanted. 12 And when they had eaten their fill, he told his disciples, “Gather up the leftover fragments, that nothing may be lost.” 13 So they gathered them up and filled twelve baskets with fragments from the five barley loaves left by those who had eaten. 14 When the people saw the sign that he had done, they said, “This is indeed the Prophet who is to come into the world!” 15 Perceiving then that they were about to come and take him by force to make him king, Jesus withdrew again to the mountain by himself.

Jesus Walks on Water

16 When evening came, his disciples went down to the sea, 17 got into a boat, and started across the sea to Capernaum. It was now dark, and Jesus had not yet come to them. 18 The sea became rough because a strong wind was blowing. 19 When they had rowed about three or four miles,* they saw Jesus walking on the sea and coming near the boat, and they were frightened. 20 But he said to them, “It is I; do not be afraid.” 21 Then they were glad to take him into the boat, and immediately the boat was at the land to which they were going.

I Am the Bread of Life

22 On the next day the crowd that remained on the other side of the sea saw that there had been only one boat there, and that Jesus had not entered the boat with his disciples, but that his disciples had gone away alone. 23 Other boats from Tiberias came near the place where they had eaten the bread after the Lord had given thanks. 24 So when the crowd saw that Jesus was not there, nor his disciples, they themselves got into the boats and went to Capernaum, seeking Jesus. 25 When they found him on the other side of the sea, they said to him, “Rabbi, when did you come here?” 26 Jesus answered them, “Truly, truly, I say to you, you are seeking me, not because you saw signs, but because you ate your fill of the loaves. 27 Do not work for the food that perishes, but for the food that endures to eternal life, which the Son of Man will give to you. For on him God the Father has set his seal.” 28 Then they said to him, “What must we do, to be doing the works of God?” 29 Jesus answered them, “This is the work of God, that you believe in him whom he has sent.” 30 So they said to him, “Then what sign do you do, that we may see and believe you? What work do you perform? 31 Our fathers ate the manna in the wilderness; as it is written, ‘He gave them bread from heaven to eat.’” 32 Jesus then said to them, “Truly, truly, I say to you, it was not Moses who gave you the bread from heaven, but my Father gives you the true bread from heaven. 33 For the bread of God is he who comes down from heaven and gives life to the world.” 34 They said to him, “Sir, give us this bread always.” 35 Jesus said to them, “I am the bread of life; whoever comes to me shall not hunger, and whoever believes in me shall never thirst. 36 But I said to you that you have seen me and yet do not believe. 37 All that the Father gives me will come to me, and whoever comes to me I will never cast out. 38 For I have come down from heaven, not to do my own will but the will of him who sent me. 39 And this is the will of him who sent me, that I should lose nothing of all that he has given me, but raise it up on the last day. 40 For this is the will of my Father, that everyone who looks on the Son and believes in him should have eternal life, and I will raise him up on the last day.” 41 So the Jews grumbled about him, because he said, “I am the bread that came down from heaven.” 42 They said, “Is not this Jesus, the son of Joseph, whose father and mother we know? How does he now say, ‘I have come down from heaven’?” 43 Jesus answered them, “Do not grumble among yourselves. 44 No one can come to me unless the Father who sent me draws him. And I will raise him up on the last day. 45 It is written in the Prophets, ‘And they will all be taught by God.’ Everyone who has heard and learned from the Father comes to me— 46 not that anyone has seen the Father except he who is from God; he has seen the Father. 47 Truly, truly, I say to you, whoever believes has eternal life. 48 I am the bread of life. 49 Your fathers ate the manna in the wilderness, and they died. 50 This is the bread that comes down from heaven, so that one may eat of it and not die. 51 I am the living bread that came down from heaven. If anyone eats of this bread, he will live forever. And the bread that I will give for the life of the world is my flesh.” 52 The Jews then disputed among themselves, saying, “How can this man give us his flesh to eat?” 53 So Jesus said to them, “Truly, truly, I say to you, unless you eat the flesh of the Son of Man and drink his blood, you have no life in you. 54 Whoever feeds on my flesh and drinks my blood has eternal life, and I will raise him up on the last day. 55 For my flesh is true food, and my blood is true drink. 56 Whoever feeds on my flesh and drinks my blood abides in me, and I in him. 57 As the living Father sent me, and I live because of the Father, so whoever feeds on me, he also will live because of me. 58 This is the bread that came down from heaven, not like the bread* the fathers ate, and died. Whoever feeds on this bread will live forever.” 59 Jesus* said these things in the synagogue, as he taught at Capernaum.

The Words of Eternal Life

60 When many of his disciples heard it, they said, “This is a hard saying; who can listen to it?” 61 But Jesus, knowing in himself that his disciples were grumbling about this, said to them, “Do you take offense at this? 62 Then what if you were to see the Son of Man ascending to where he was before? 63 It is the Spirit who gives life; the flesh is no help at all. The words that I have spoken to you are spirit and life. 64 But there are some of you who do not believe.” (For Jesus knew from the beginning who those were who did not believe, and who it was who would betray him.) 65 And he said, “This is why I told you that no one can come to me unless it is granted him by the Father.” 66 After this many of his disciples turned back and no longer walked with him. 67 So Jesus said to the twelve, “Do you want to go away as well?” 68 Simon Peter answered him, “Lord, to whom shall we go? You have the words of eternal life, 69 and we have believed, and have come to know, that you are the Holy One of God.” 70 Jesus answered them, “Did I not choose you, the twelve? And yet one of you is a devil.” 71 He spoke of Judas the son of Simon Iscariot, for he, one of the twelve, was going to betray him.

1 Après cela, Jésus s'en alla de l'autre côté du lac de Galilée, ou lac de Tibériade. 2 Une grande foule le suivait, parce que les gens voyaient les signes miraculeux qu'il faisait sur les malades. 3 Jésus monta sur la montagne, et là il s'assit avec ses disciples. 4 Or la Pâque, la fête juive, était proche. 5 Jésus leva les yeux et vit une grande foule venir vers lui. Il dit à Philippe: «Où achèterons-nous des pains pour que ces gens aient à manger?» 6 Il disait cela pour le mettre à l'épreuve, car lui-même savait ce qu'il allait faire. 7 Philippe lui répondit: «Les pains qu'on aurait pour 200 pièces d'argent ne suffiraient pas pour que chacun en reçoive un peu.» 8 Un de ses disciples, André, le frère de Simon Pierre, lui dit: 9 «Il y a ici un jeune garçon qui a cinq pains d'orge et deux poissons, mais qu'est-ce que cela pour tant de monde?» 10 Jésus dit: «Faites asseoir ces gens.» Il y avait beaucoup d'herbe à cet endroit. Ils s'assirent donc, au nombre d'environ 5000 hommes. 11 Jésus prit les pains, remercia Dieu et les distribua [aux disciples, qui les donnèrent] à ceux qui étaient là; il leur distribua de même des poissons, autant qu'ils en voulurent. 12 Lorsqu'ils furent rassasiés, il dit à ses disciples: «Ramassez les morceaux qui restent, afin que rien ne se perde.» 13 Ils les ramassèrent donc et ils remplirent douze paniers avec les morceaux qui restaient des cinq pains d'orge après que tous eurent mangé. 14 A la vue du signe miraculeux que Jésus avait fait, ces gens disaient: «Cet homme est vraiment le prophète qui doit venir dans le monde.» 15 Cependant Jésus, sachant qu'ils allaient venir l'enlever pour le faire roi, se retira de nouveau sur la montagne, tout seul. 16 Le soir venu, ses disciples descendirent au bord du lac. 17 Ils montèrent dans une barque pour traverser le lac et se rendre à Capernaüm. Il faisait déjà nuit et Jésus ne les avait pas encore rejoints. 18 Le vent soufflait avec violence et le lac était agité. 19 Après avoir ramé environ cinq kilomètres, ils virent Jésus qui marchait sur l'eau et s'approchait de la barque, et ils eurent peur. 20 Mais Jésus leur dit: «C'est moi, n'ayez pas peur!» 21 Ils voulurent alors le prendre dans la barque, et aussitôt celle-ci aborda à l'endroit où ils allaient.

Jésus, le pain de vie

22 Le lendemain, la foule restée de l'autre côté du lac remarqua qu'il n'y avait eu là qu'une seule barque et que Jésus n'était pas monté dedans avec ses disciples, mais que ceux-ci étaient partis seuls. 23 D'autres barques arrivèrent de Tibériade près de l'endroit où ils avaient mangé le pain après que le Seigneur eut remercié Dieu. 24 Quand les gens s'aperçurent que ni Jésus ni ses disciples n'étaient là, ils montèrent dans ces barques et allèrent à Capernaüm à la recherche de Jésus. 25 Ils le trouvèrent de l'autre côté du lac et lui dirent: «Maître, quand es-tu venu ici?» 26 Jésus leur répondit: «En vérité, en vérité, je vous le dis, vous me cherchez non parce que vous avez vu des signes, mais parce que vous avez mangé du pain et que vous avez été rassasiés. 27 Travaillez, non pour la nourriture périssable, mais pour celle qui subsiste pour la vie éternelle, celle que le Fils de l'homme vous donnera, car c'est lui que le Père, Dieu lui-même, a marqué de son empreinte*.» 28 Ils lui dirent: «Que devons-nous faire pour accomplir les œuvres de Dieu?» 29 Jésus leur répondit: «L'œuvre de Dieu, c'est que vous croyiez en celui qu'il a envoyé.» 30 «Quel signe miraculeux fais-tu donc, lui dirent-ils, afin que nous le voyions et que nous croyions en toi? Que fais-tu? 31 Nos ancêtres ont mangé la manne* dans le désert, comme cela est écrit: Il leur a donné le pain du ciel à manger.*» 32 Jésus leur dit: «En vérité, en vérité, je vous le dis, ce n'est pas Moïse qui vous a donné le pain du ciel, mais c'est mon Père qui vous donne le vrai pain du ciel. 33 En effet, le pain de Dieu, c'est celui qui descend du ciel et qui donne la vie au monde.» 34 Ils lui dirent alors: «Seigneur, donne-nous toujours ce pain-là!» 35 Jésus leur dit: «C'est moi qui suis le pain de la vie. Celui qui vient à moi n'aura jamais faim et celui qui croit en moi n'aura jamais soif. 36 Mais, je vous l'ai dit, vous m'avez vu et pourtant vous ne croyez pas. 37 Tous ceux que le Père me donne viendront à moi et je ne mettrai pas dehors celui qui vient à moi. 38 En effet, je suis descendu du ciel pour faire non pas ma volonté, mais celle de celui qui m'a envoyé. 39 [Or, la volonté du Père qui m'a envoyé,] c'est que je ne perde aucun de tous ceux qu'il m'a donnés, mais que je les ressuscite le dernier jour. 40 En effet, la volonté de mon Père, c'est que toute personne qui voit le Fils et croit en lui ait la vie éternelle, et moi, je la ressusciterai le dernier jour.» 41 Les Juifs murmuraient à son sujet parce qu'il avait dit: «Je suis le pain descendu du ciel», 42 et ils disaient: «N'est-ce pas Jésus, le fils de Joseph, celui dont nous connaissons le père et la mère? Comment donc peut-il dire: ‘Je suis descendu du ciel’?» 43 Jésus leur répondit: «Ne murmurez pas entre vous. 44 Personne ne peut venir à moi, à moins que le Père qui m'a envoyé ne l'attire, et moi, je le ressusciterai le dernier jour. 45 Il est écrit dans les prophètes: Ils seront tous enseignés de Dieu.* Ainsi donc, toute personne qui a entendu le Père et s'est laissé instruire vient à moi. 46 C'est que personne n'a vu le Père, sauf celui qui vient de Dieu; lui, il a vu le Père. 47 En vérité, en vérité, je vous le dis, celui qui croit [en moi] a la vie éternelle. 48 Je suis le pain de la vie. 49 Vos ancêtres ont mangé la manne dans le désert et ils sont morts. 50 Voici comment est le pain qui descend du ciel: celui qui en mange ne mourra pas. 51 Je suis le pain vivant descendu du ciel. Si quelqu'un mange de ce pain, il vivra éternellement, et le pain que je donnerai, c'est mon corps, [que je donnerai] pour la vie du monde.» 52 Là-dessus, les Juifs se mirent à discuter vivement entre eux, disant: «Comment peut-il nous donner son corps à manger?» 53 Jésus leur dit: «En vérité, en vérité, je vous le dis, si vous ne mangez pas le corps du Fils de l'homme et si vous ne buvez pas son sang, vous n'avez pas la vie en vous-mêmes. 54 Celui qui mange mon corps et qui boit mon sang a la vie éternelle, et moi, je le ressusciterai le dernier jour. 55 En effet, mon corps est vraiment une nourriture et mon sang est vraiment une boisson. 56 Celui qui mange mon corps et qui boit mon sang demeure en moi, et moi je demeure en lui. 57 Tout comme le Père qui est vivant m'a envoyé et que je vis grâce au Père, ainsi celui qui me mange vivra grâce à moi. 58 Voilà comment est le pain descendu du ciel. Il n'est pas comme [la manne que vos] ancêtres ont mangée; eux sont morts, mais celui qui mange de ce pain vivra éternellement.» 59 Jésus dit ces paroles alors qu'il enseignait dans une synagogue, à Capernaüm. 60 Après l'avoir entendu, beaucoup de ses disciples dirent: «Cette parole est dure. Qui peut l'écouter?» 61 Jésus savait en lui-même que ses disciples murmuraient à ce sujet. Il leur dit: «Cela vous scandalise? 62 Si vous voyiez le Fils de l'homme monter là où il était auparavant! 63 C'est l'Esprit qui fait vivre, l'homme n'arrive à rien. Les paroles que je vous dis sont Esprit et vie, 64 mais il y en a parmi vous quelques-uns qui ne croient pas.» En effet, Jésus savait dès le début qui étaient ceux qui ne croyaient pas et qui était celui qui le trahirait. 65 Il ajouta: «Voilà pourquoi je vous ai dit que personne ne peut venir à moi à moins que cela ne lui soit donné par mon Père.» 66 Dès ce moment, beaucoup de ses disciples se retirèrent et arrêtèrent de marcher avec lui. 67 Jésus dit alors aux douze: «Et vous, ne voulez-vous pas aussi vous en aller?» 68 Simon Pierre lui répondit: «Seigneur, à qui irions-nous? Tu as les paroles de la vie éternelle. 69 Et nous, nous croyons et nous savons que tu es le Messie, le Fils du Dieu vivant.» 70 Jésus leur répondit: «N'est-ce pas moi qui vous ai choisis, vous les douze? Et l'un de vous est un diable!» 71 Il parlait de Judas l'Iscariot*, fils de Simon, car c'était lui qui allait le trahir, lui, l'un des douze.
