1The word of the Lord came to Jeremiah a second time, while he was still shut up in the court of the guard:2“Thus says the Lord who made the earth,* the Lord who formed it to establish it—the Lord is his name:3Call to me and I will answer you, and will tell you great and hidden things that you have not known.4For thus says the Lord, the God of Israel, concerning the houses of this city and the houses of the kings of Judah that were torn down to make a defense against the siege mounds and against the sword:5They are coming in to fight against the Chaldeans and to fill them* with the dead bodies of men whom I shall strike down in my anger and my wrath, for I have hidden my face from this city because of all their evil.6Behold, I will bring to it health and healing, and I will heal them and reveal to them abundance of prosperity and security.7I will restore the fortunes of Judah and the fortunes of Israel, and rebuild them as they were at first.8I will cleanse them from all the guilt of their sin against me, and I will forgive all the guilt of their sin and rebellion against me.9And this city* shall be to me a name of joy, a praise and a glory before all the nations of the earth who shall hear of all the good that I do for them. They shall fear and tremble because of all the good and all the prosperity I provide for it.10“Thus says the Lord: In this place of which you say, ‘It is a waste without man or beast,’ in the cities of Judah and the streets of Jerusalem that are desolate, without man or inhabitant or beast, there shall be heard again11the voice of mirth and the voice of gladness, the voice of the bridegroom and the voice of the bride, the voices of those who sing, as they bring thank offerings to the house of the Lord: “‘Give thanks to the Lord of hosts, for the Lord is good, for his steadfast love endures forever!’ For I will restore the fortunes of the land as at first, says the Lord.12“Thus says the Lord of hosts: In this place that is waste, without man or beast, and in all of its cities, there shall again be habitations of shepherds resting their flocks.13In the cities of the hill country, in the cities of the Shephelah, and in the cities of the Negeb, in the land of Benjamin, the places about Jerusalem, and in the cities of Judah, flocks shall again pass under the hands of the one who counts them, says the Lord.
The Lord’s Eternal Covenant with David
14“Behold, the days are coming, declares the Lord, when I will fulfill the promise I made to the house of Israel and the house of Judah.15In those days and at that time I will cause a righteous Branch to spring up for David, and he shall execute justice and righteousness in the land.16In those days Judah will be saved, and Jerusalem will dwell securely. And this is the name by which it will be called: ‘The Lord is our righteousness.’17“For thus says the Lord: David shall never lack a man to sit on the throne of the house of Israel,18and the Levitical priests shall never lack a man in my presence to offer burnt offerings, to burn grain offerings, and to make sacrifices forever.”19The word of the Lord came to Jeremiah:20“Thus says the Lord: If you can break my covenant with the day and my covenant with the night, so that day and night will not come at their appointed time,21then also my covenant with David my servant may be broken, so that he shall not have a son to reign on his throne, and my covenant with the Levitical priests my ministers.22As the host of heaven cannot be numbered and the sands of the sea cannot be measured, so I will multiply the offspring of David my servant, and the Levitical priests who minister to me.”23The word of the Lord came to Jeremiah:24“Have you not observed that these people are saying, ‘The Lord has rejected the two clans that he chose’? Thus they have despised my people so that they are no longer a nation in their sight.25Thus says the Lord: If I have not established my covenant with day and night and the fixed order of heaven and earth,26then I will reject the offspring of Jacob and David my servant and will not choose one of his offspring to rule over the offspring of Abraham, Isaac, and Jacob. For I will restore their fortunes and will have mercy on them.”

1La parole de l'Eternel fut adressée à Jérémie une deuxième fois, alors qu'il était encore enfermé dans la cour de la prison:2«Voici ce que dit l'Eternel qui met en œuvre ces événements, l'Eternel qui leur donne forme en les préparant, celui dont le nom est l'Eternel:3Fais appel à moi et je te répondrai. Je te révélerai des réalités importantes et inaccessibles, des réalités que tu ne connais pas.4»En effet, voici ce que dit l'Eternel, le Dieu d'Israël, au sujet des maisons de cette ville et des palais des rois de Juda démolis par les remblais et par l'épée:5Quand ils s'avanceront pour combattre les Babyloniens, ils les rempliront des cadavres des hommes que j'aurai frappés en raison de ma colère et de ma fureur, car c'est à cause de toute leur méchanceté que je me cache à cette ville.6»Cependant, je vais lui donner la guérison et la santé. Je les guérirai et je leur ouvrirai une source abondante de paix et de vérité.7Je ramènerai les déportés de Juda et d'Israël, et je leur rendrai leur condition passée.8Je les purifierai de toute leur mauvaise conduite, celle par laquelle ils ont péché contre moi, je leur pardonnerai toutes leurs fautes, celles par lesquelles ils ont péché contre moi et se sont révoltés contre moi.9Jérusalem deviendra pour moi synonyme de réjouissance, elle sera ma gloire et mon honneur devant toutes les nations de la terre, lorsqu'elles apprendront tout le bien que je leur ferai. Elles trembleront et seront bouleversées à cause de tout le bonheur et de tout le bien-être que je lui accorderai.10»Voici ce que dit l'Eternel: On entendra encore, dans cet endroit que vous présentez comme un désert sans hommes ni bêtes, on entendra dans les villes de Juda et dans les rues de Jérusalem dévastées, dépourvues d'hommes, d'habitants et de bêtes11les cris de réjouissance et de joie, les chants du fiancé et de la fiancée. On entendra la voix de ceux qui disent: ‘Célébrez l'Eternel, le maître de l'univers, car il est bon. Oui, sa bonté dure éternellement’, la voix de ceux qui offrent des sacrifices de reconnaissance dans la maison de l'Eternel. En effet, je ramènerai les déportés du pays pour qu'ils retrouvent leur condition passée, dit l'Eternel.12»Voici ce que dit l'Eternel, le maître de l'univers: Il y aura encore, dans cet endroit désert, sans hommes ni bêtes, et dans toutes les villes qui en dépendent, il y aura encore un domaine où les bergers pourront faire reposer leurs troupeaux.
Des alliances irrévocables
13Dans les villes de la montagne, dans celles de la plaine et du sud, dans le pays de Benjamin, les environs de Jérusalem et les villes de Juda, les brebis défileront encore devant celui qui les compte, dit l'Eternel.14»Voici que les jours viennent, déclare l'Eternel, où j'accomplirai la bonne parole que j'ai prononcée à l'intention de la communauté d'Israël et de celle de Juda.15Durant ces jours-là, à ce moment-là, je ferai pousser pour David un germe de justice. Il exercera le droit et la justice dans le pays.16A cette époque-là, Juda sera sauvé et l'on habitera en sécurité à Jérusalem. Voici comment on l'appellera: ‘L'Eternel notre justice’.*17»En effet, voici ce qu'a dit l'Eternel: David ne manquera jamais d'un successeur pour siéger sur le trône de la communauté d'Israël.*18Les prêtres lévitiques non plus ne manqueront pas d'un successeur qui se tienne devant moi pour offrir des holocaustes, faire brûler des offrandes et présenter des sacrifices tous les jours.»19La parole de l'Eternel fut adressée à Jérémie:20«Voici ce que dit l'Eternel: Si vous pouviez rompre mon alliance avec le jour et avec la nuit et faire en sorte qu'ils n'apparaissent plus au moment fixé pour eux,21alors mon alliance serait aussi rompue avec mon serviteur David et il n'aurait plus de fils pour occuper son trône. Il en irait de même pour mon alliance avec les Lévites, les prêtres qui sont à mon service.22De même qu'on ne peut compter tous les corps célestes ni peser le sable de la mer, de même je rendrai innombrables la descendance de mon serviteur David et les Lévites qui sont à mon service.»23La parole de l'Eternel fut adressée à Jérémie:24«N'as-tu pas remarqué ce que dit ce peuple? Ils affirment que l'Eternel a rejeté les deux familles qu'il avait choisies. Ils méprisent ainsi mon peuple, au point de ne plus le considérer comme une nation.25»Voici ce que dit l'Eternel: Si je n'avais pas établi mon alliance avec le jour et avec la nuit, les règles fixées au ciel et à la terre,26alors je pourrais aussi rejeter la descendance de Jacob et de mon serviteur David et ne plus prendre dans la lignée de ce dernier les dominateurs des descendants d'Abraham, d'Isaac et de Jacob. Cependant, je ramènerai leurs déportés et j'aurai compassion d'eux.»
