1The word that came to Jeremiah from the Lord in the tenth year of Zedekiah king of Judah, which was the eighteenth year of Nebuchadnezzar.2At that time the army of the king of Babylon was besieging Jerusalem, and Jeremiah the prophet was shut up in the court of the guard that was in the palace of the king of Judah.3For Zedekiah king of Judah had imprisoned him, saying, “Why do you prophesy and say, ‘Thus says the Lord: Behold, I am giving this city into the hand of the king of Babylon, and he shall capture it;4Zedekiah king of Judah shall not escape out of the hand of the Chaldeans, but shall surely be given into the hand of the king of Babylon, and shall speak with him face to face and see him eye to eye.5And he shall take Zedekiah to Babylon, and there he shall remain until I visit him, declares the Lord. Though you fight against the Chaldeans, you shall not succeed’?”6Jeremiah said, “The word of the Lord came to me:7Behold, Hanamel the son of Shallum your uncle will come to you and say, ‘Buy my field that is at Anathoth, for the right of redemption by purchase is yours.’8Then Hanamel my cousin came to me in the court of the guard, in accordance with the word of the Lord, and said to me, ‘Buy my field that is at Anathoth in the land of Benjamin, for the right of possession and redemption is yours; buy it for yourself.’ Then I knew that this was the word of the Lord.9“And I bought the field at Anathoth from Hanamel my cousin, and weighed out the money to him, seventeen shekels of silver.10I signed the deed, sealed it, got witnesses, and weighed the money on scales.11Then I took the sealed deed of purchase, containing the terms and conditions and the open copy.12And I gave the deed of purchase to Baruch the son of Neriah son of Mahseiah, in the presence of Hanamel my cousin, in the presence of the witnesses who signed the deed of purchase, and in the presence of all the Judeans who were sitting in the court of the guard.13I charged Baruch in their presence, saying,14‘Thus says the Lord of hosts, the God of Israel: Take these deeds, both this sealed deed of purchase and this open deed, and put them in an earthenware vessel, that they may last for a long time.15For thus says the Lord of hosts, the God of Israel: Houses and fields and vineyards shall again be bought in this land.’
Jeremiah Prays for Understanding
16“After I had given the deed of purchase to Baruch the son of Neriah, I prayed to the Lord, saying:17‘Ah, Lord God! It is you who have made the heavens and the earth by your great power and by your outstretched arm! Nothing is too hard for you.18You show steadfast love to thousands, but you repay the guilt of fathers to their children after them, O great and mighty God, whose name is the Lord of hosts,19great in counsel and mighty in deed, whose eyes are open to all the ways of the children of man, rewarding each one according to his ways and according to the fruit of his deeds.20You have shown signs and wonders in the land of Egypt, and to this day in Israel and among all mankind, and have made a name for yourself, as at this day.21You brought your people Israel out of the land of Egypt with signs and wonders, with a strong hand and outstretched arm, and with great terror.22And you gave them this land, which you swore to their fathers to give them, a land flowing with milk and honey.23And they entered and took possession of it. But they did not obey your voice or walk in your law. They did nothing of all you commanded them to do. Therefore you have made all this disaster come upon them.24Behold, the siege mounds have come up to the city to take it, and because of sword and famine and pestilence the city is given into the hands of the Chaldeans who are fighting against it. What you spoke has come to pass, and behold, you see it.25Yet you, O Lord God, have said to me, “Buy the field for money and get witnesses”—though the city is given into the hands of the Chaldeans.’”26The word of the Lord came to Jeremiah:27“Behold, I am the Lord, the God of all flesh. Is anything too hard for me?28Therefore, thus says the Lord: Behold, I am giving this city into the hands of the Chaldeans and into the hand of Nebuchadnezzar king of Babylon, and he shall capture it.29The Chaldeans who are fighting against this city shall come and set this city on fire and burn it, with the houses on whose roofs offerings have been made to Baal and drink offerings have been poured out to other gods, to provoke me to anger.30For the children of Israel and the children of Judah have done nothing but evil in my sight from their youth. The children of Israel have done nothing but provoke me to anger by the work of their hands, declares the Lord.31This city has aroused my anger and wrath, from the day it was built to this day, so that I will remove it from my sight32because of all the evil of the children of Israel and the children of Judah that they did to provoke me to anger—their kings and their officials, their priests and their prophets, the men of Judah and the inhabitants of Jerusalem.33They have turned to me their back and not their face. And though I have taught them persistently, they have not listened to receive instruction.34They set up their abominations in the house that is called by my name, to defile it.35They built the high places of Baal in the Valley of the Son of Hinnom, to offer up their sons and daughters to Molech, though I did not command them, nor did it enter into my mind, that they should do this abomination, to cause Judah to sin.
They Shall Be My People; I Will Be Their God
36“Now therefore thus says the Lord, the God of Israel, concerning this city of which you say, ‘It is given into the hand of the king of Babylon by sword, by famine, and by pestilence’:37Behold, I will gather them from all the countries to which I drove them in my anger and my wrath and in great indignation. I will bring them back to this place, and I will make them dwell in safety.38And they shall be my people, and I will be their God.39I will give them one heart and one way, that they may fear me forever, for their own good and the good of their children after them.40I will make with them an everlasting covenant, that I will not turn away from doing good to them. And I will put the fear of me in their hearts, that they may not turn from me.41I will rejoice in doing them good, and I will plant them in this land in faithfulness, with all my heart and all my soul.42“For thus says the Lord: Just as I have brought all this great disaster upon this people, so I will bring upon them all the good that I promise them.43Fields shall be bought in this land of which you are saying, ‘It is a desolation, without man or beast; it is given into the hand of the Chaldeans.’44Fields shall be bought for money, and deeds shall be signed and sealed and witnessed, in the land of Benjamin, in the places about Jerusalem, and in the cities of Judah, in the cities of the hill country, in the cities of the Shephelah, and in the cities of the Negeb; for I will restore their fortunes, declares the Lord.”

1Voici la parole adressée à Jérémie de la part de l'Eternel, la dixième année du règne de Sédécias sur Juda, qui était aussi la dix-huitième année du règne de Nebucadnetsar.2L'armée du roi de Babylone faisait alors le siège de Jérusalem et le prophète Jérémie était enfermé dans la cour de la prison qui se trouvait dans le palais du roi de Juda.3Sédécias, roi de Juda, l'avait fait enfermer en lui adressant ce reproche: «Pourquoi prophétises-tu comme tu le fais? En effet, tu affirmes: ‘Voici ce que dit l'Eternel: Je vais livrer cette ville entre les mains du roi de Babylone et il s'en emparera.4Sédécias, roi de Juda, n'échappera pas aux Babyloniens, mais il est certain qu'il sera livré entre les mains du roi de Babylone, il devra lui parler en face et le voir de ses yeux.5Nebucadnetsar emmènera Sédécias à Babylone où il restera jusqu'à ce que je m'occupe de lui, déclare l'Eternel. Si vous combattez les Babyloniens, vous n'aurez aucun succès.’»6Jérémie dit: «Voici la parole que l'Eternel m'a adressée:7‘Hanameel, le fils de ton oncle Shallum, va venir te trouver pour te demander d'acheter son champ qui se trouve à Anathoth, car tu as un droit de rachat pour l'acquérir.’8Effectivement, Hanameel, le fils de mon oncle, est venu me trouver dans la cour de la prison, conformément à la parole de l'Eternel, et m'a dit: ‘Je t'en prie, achète mon champ qui se trouve à Anathoth, dans le pays de Benjamin, car tu as un droit d'héritage et de rachat. Achète-le donc!’ J'ai alors su que c'était bien une parole de l'Eternel.9J'ai donc acheté le champ de Hanameel, le fils de mon oncle, qui est à Anathoth, et je lui ai pesé l'argent, soit 17 pièces d'argent.10J'ai écrit un contrat, l'ai cacheté devant des témoins, puis j'ai pesé l'argent dans une balance.11J'ai pris ensuite le contrat de vente qui était cacheté, avec ses dispositions générales et ses clauses, ainsi que celui qui était ouvert.12J'ai remis le contrat de vente à Baruc, fils de Nérija et petit-fils de Machséja, en présence de Hanameel, le fils de mon oncle, des témoins qui avaient signé le contrat de vente et de tous les Judéens qui se trouvaient dans la cour de la prison.13Devant eux j'ai donné cet ordre à Baruc:14‘Voici ce que dit l'Eternel, le maître de l'univers, le Dieu d'Israël: Prends ces documents, le contrat de vente qui est cacheté et celui qui est ouvert, et mets-les dans un vase de terre afin qu'ils se conservent longtemps.15En effet, voici ce que dit l'Eternel, le maître de l'univers, le Dieu d'Israël: On achètera encore des maisons, des champs et des vignes, dans ce pays.’16»Après avoir remis le contrat de vente à Baruc, fils de Nérija, j'ai adressé cette prière à l'Eternel:17‘Seigneur Eternel, c'est toi qui as fait le ciel et la terre par ta grande puissance et ta force. Rien n'est trop difficile pour toi.18Tu fais preuve de bonté jusqu'à la millième génération et tu fais payer la faute des pères à leurs enfants après eux. Tu es le Dieu grand et puissant qui as pour nom l'Eternel, le maître de l'univers.19Tu es un excellent conseiller, généreux dans ton activité, toi qui examines toutes les voies des humains pour traiter chacun conformément à sa conduite, en fonction de ses agissements.20»Tu as accompli des signes et des miracles en Egypte jusqu'à aujourd'hui, ainsi qu'en Israël et parmi les hommes, et tu t'es fait la réputation qui est la tienne aujourd'hui.21Tu as fait sortir d'Egypte ton peuple, Israël, avec des signes et des miracles, avec puissance et force, en provoquant une grande terreur.22Tu leur as donné ce pays, celui que tu avais promis à leurs ancêtres de leur donner, un pays où coulent le lait et le miel.23Ils sont venus et en ont pris possession. »Cependant, ils n'ont pas écouté ce que tu leur disais, ils n'ont pas respecté ta loi, ils n'ont pas fait tout ce que tu leur avais ordonné de faire. C'est alors que tu as fait fondre sur eux tous ces malheurs:24voici qu'on construit des remblais contre la ville pour s'en emparer, Jérusalem est livrée aux Babyloniens qui l'attaquent, livrée à l'épée, à la famine et à la peste! Ce que tu as annoncé arrive, et tu le vois bien.25Pourtant, Seigneur Eternel, tu m'as ordonné de m'acheter un champ avec de l'argent, de le faire devant témoins, et ce alors que la ville est livrée aux Babyloniens!’»26La parole de l'Eternel fut adressée à Jérémie:27«C'est moi qui suis l'Eternel, le Dieu de toute créature. Y a-t-il quoi que ce soit de trop difficile pour moi?28C'est pourquoi, voici ce que dit l'Eternel: Je vais livrer cette ville entre les mains des Babyloniens et de Nebucadnetsar, le roi de Babylone; il s'en emparera.29Les Babyloniens qui attaquent cette ville parviendront à y entrer; ils y mettront le feu et la brûleront, ainsi que les maisons où, sur les toits, ils ont fait brûler de l'encens en l'honneur de Baal et versé des offrandes liquides en l'honneur d'autres dieux, de sorte qu'ils m'ont irrité.30En effet, les Israélites et les Judéens n'ont fait que ce qui est mal à mes yeux, et ce depuis leur jeunesse. Les Israélites n'ont fait que m'irriter par leur manière d'agir, déclare l'Eternel.31»Oui, cette ville a provoqué ma colère et ma fureur depuis le jour où ils l'ont construite jusqu'à aujourd'hui; aussi, je ne veux plus la voir32à cause de tout le mal que les Israélites et les Judéens ont fait au point de m'irriter, eux, leurs rois, leurs chefs, leurs prêtres et leurs prophètes, les hommes de Juda aussi bien que les habitants de Jérusalem.33Ils m'ont tourné le dos, ils ont arrêté de me regarder en face. Pourtant on les a enseignés, encore et encore, inlassablement, mais ils n'ont pas voulu tenir compte de la correction.34Ils ont placé leurs monstrueuses idoles dans le temple auquel mon nom est associé, de manière à le rendre impur.35Ils ont construit des hauts lieux en l'honneur de Baal, dans la vallée de Ben-Hinnom, pour offrir leurs fils et leurs filles en sacrifice à Moloc. Cela, je ne l'avais pas ordonné, cela ne m'était pas venu à la pensée: commettre de telles horreurs pour faire pécher Juda!36»Et maintenant, voici ce que dit l'Eternel, le Dieu d'Israël, à l'intention de cette ville, que vous présentez comme livrée entre les mains du roi de Babylone, vaincue par l'épée, la famine et la peste:37Je vais les rassembler de tous les pays où je les ai chassés en raison de ma colère, ma fureur et ma grande indignation. Je les ramènerai ici et je ferai en sorte qu'ils y habitent en sécurité.38Ils seront mon peuple et moi, je serai leur Dieu.*39Je leur donnerai un seul cœur et un seul chemin afin qu'ils aient toujours la crainte de moi, pour leur bonheur et celui de leurs enfants après eux.40Je conclurai avec eux une alliance éternelle, d'après laquelle je ne renoncerai plus à eux mais leur ferai du bien et mettrai la crainte qui m'est due dans leur cœur, pour qu'ils ne se détournent plus de moi.41Je prendrai plaisir à leur faire du bien et je les enracinerai vraiment dans ce pays, de tout mon cœur et de toute mon âme.42»En effet, voici ce que dit l'Eternel: De même que j'ai fait venir tous ces grands malheurs contre ce peuple, de même je ferai venir sur eux tout le bien que je leur promets.43On achètera des champs, dans ce pays que vous présentez comme une ruine sans hommes ni bêtes, livrée entre les mains des Babyloniens.44On achètera des champs avec de l'argent, on écrira des contrats, on les cachètera, on prendra des témoins dans le pays de Benjamin et les environs de Jérusalem, dans les villes de Juda, dans celles de la montagne, de la plaine et du sud, car je ramènerai leurs déportés, déclare l'Eternel.»
