1After this Absalom got himself a chariot and horses, and fifty men to run before him.2And Absalom used to rise early and stand beside the way of the gate. And when any man had a dispute to come before the king for judgment, Absalom would call to him and say, “From what city are you?” And when he said, “Your servant is of such and such a tribe in Israel,”3Absalom would say to him, “See, your claims are good and right, but there is no man designated by the king to hear you.”4Then Absalom would say, “Oh that I were judge in the land! Then every man with a dispute or cause might come to me, and I would give him justice.”5And whenever a man came near to pay homage to him, he would put out his hand and take hold of him and kiss him.6Thus Absalom did to all of Israel who came to the king for judgment. So Absalom stole the hearts of the men of Israel.7And at the end of four* years Absalom said to the king, “Please let me go and pay my vow, which I have vowed to the Lord, in Hebron.8For your servant vowed a vow while I lived at Geshur in Aram, saying, ‘If the Lord will indeed bring me back to Jerusalem, then I will offer worship to* the Lord.’”9The king said to him, “Go in peace.” So he arose and went to Hebron.10But Absalom sent secret messengers throughout all the tribes of Israel, saying, “As soon as you hear the sound of the trumpet, then say, ‘Absalom is king at Hebron!’”11With Absalom went two hundred men from Jerusalem who were invited guests, and they went in their innocence and knew nothing.12And while Absalom was offering the sacrifices, he sent for* Ahithophel the Gilonite, David’s counselor, from his city Giloh. And the conspiracy grew strong, and the people with Absalom kept increasing.
David Flees Jerusalem
13And a messenger came to David, saying, “The hearts of the men of Israel have gone after Absalom.”14Then David said to all his servants who were with him at Jerusalem, “Arise, and let us flee, or else there will be no escape for us from Absalom. Go quickly, lest he overtake us quickly and bring down ruin on us and strike the city with the edge of the sword.”15And the king’s servants said to the king, “Behold, your servants are ready to do whatever my lord the king decides.”16So the king went out, and all his household after him. And the king left ten concubines to keep the house.17And the king went out, and all the people after him. And they halted at the last house.18And all his servants passed by him, and all the Cherethites, and all the Pelethites, and all the six hundred Gittites who had followed him from Gath, passed on before the king.19Then the king said to Ittai the Gittite, “Why do you also go with us? Go back and stay with the king, for you are a foreigner and also an exile from your home.20You came only yesterday, and shall I today make you wander about with us, since I go I know not where? Go back and take your brothers with you, and may the Lord show* steadfast love and faithfulness to you.”21But Ittai answered the king, “As the Lord lives, and as my lord the king lives, wherever my lord the king shall be, whether for death or for life, there also will your servant be.”22And David said to Ittai, “Go then, pass on.” So Ittai the Gittite passed on with all his men and all the little ones who were with him.23And all the land wept aloud as all the people passed by, and the king crossed the brook Kidron, and all the people passed on toward the wilderness.24And Abiathar came up, and behold, Zadok came also with all the Levites, bearing the ark of the covenant of God. And they set down the ark of God until the people had all passed out of the city.25Then the king said to Zadok, “Carry the ark of God back into the city. If I find favor in the eyes of the Lord, he will bring me back and let me see both it and his dwelling place.26But if he says, ‘I have no pleasure in you,’ behold, here I am, let him do to me what seems good to him.”27The king also said to Zadok the priest, “Are you not a seer? Go back* to the city in peace, with your two sons, Ahimaaz your son, and Jonathan the son of Abiathar.28See, I will wait at the fords of the wilderness until word comes from you to inform me.”29So Zadok and Abiathar carried the ark of God back to Jerusalem, and they remained there.30But David went up the ascent of the Mount of Olives, weeping as he went, barefoot and with his head covered. And all the people who were with him covered their heads, and they went up, weeping as they went.31And it was told David, “Ahithophel is among the conspirators with Absalom.” And David said, “O Lord, please turn the counsel of Ahithophel into foolishness.”32While David was coming to the summit, where God was worshiped, behold, Hushai the Archite came to meet him with his coat torn and dirt on his head.33David said to him, “If you go on with me, you will be a burden to me.34But if you return to the city and say to Absalom, ‘I will be your servant, O king; as I have been your father’s servant in time past, so now I will be your servant,’ then you will defeat for me the counsel of Ahithophel.35Are not Zadok and Abiathar the priests with you there? So whatever you hear from the king’s house, tell it to Zadok and Abiathar the priests.36Behold, their two sons are with them there, Ahimaaz, Zadok’s son, and Jonathan, Abiathar’s son, and by them you shall send to me everything you hear.”37So Hushai, David’s friend, came into the city, just as Absalom was entering Jerusalem.

Ta cause est bonne et juste, mais personne ne t'écoutera chez le roi.»4Absalom ajoutait: «Qui m'établira juge dans le pays? Tout homme qui aurait une contestation et un procès viendrait me trouver et je lui rendrais justice.»5Quand quelqu'un s'approchait pour se prosterner devant lui, il lui tendait la main, le retenait et l'embrassait.6Absalom agissait de cette manière envers tous les Israélites qui se rendaient vers le roi pour demander justice, et il gagnait le cœur des hommes d'Israël.7Au bout de 4 ans*, Absalom dit au roi: «Permets-moi d'aller à Hébron pour accomplir le vœu que j'ai fait à l'Eternel.8En effet, moi ton serviteur, j'ai fait un vœu pendant que j'habitais à Gueshur en Syrie. J'ai dit: ‘Si l'Eternel me fait revenir à Jérusalem, je le servirai.’»9Le roi lui dit: «Vas-y en paix.» Alors Absalom se leva et partit pour Hébron.10Absalom envoya des espions dans toutes les tribus d'Israël pour dire: «Quand vous entendrez le son de la trompette, vous direz: ‘Absalom est devenu roi à Hébron’»,11et 200 hommes de Jérusalem qui avaient été invités accompagnèrent Absalom. Ils le firent en toute innocence, sans rien savoir.12Pendant qu'il offrait les sacrifices, Absalom fit venir de la ville de Guilo Achitophel le Guilonite, le conseiller de David. La conspiration devint puissante et le peuple était de plus en plus nombreux à se rallier à Absalom.13Quelqu'un vint informer David en disant: «Le cœur des Israélites s'est attaché à Absalom.»14David dit alors à tous ses serviteurs, qui se trouvaient avec lui à Jérusalem: «Levez-vous, prenons la fuite, car il n'y aura aucun moyen pour nous d'échapper à Absalom. Dépêchez-vous de partir! Autrement, il ne va pas tarder à nous rattraper, et il nous précipitera dans le malheur et frappera la ville du tranchant de l'épée.»15Les serviteurs du roi lui dirent: «Nous ferons tout ce que mon seigneur le roi voudra, nous sommes tes serviteurs.»16Le roi sortit, suivi de toute sa famille, et il ne laissa que dix concubines pour garder le palais.17Le roi sortit donc, suivi de tout le peuple, et ils s'arrêtèrent à la dernière maison.18Tous ses serviteurs, tous les Kéréthiens et tous les Péléthiens avançaient à ses côtés, tandis que tous les Gathiens, 600 hommes qui l'avaient suivi depuis Gath, passaient devant lui.19Le roi dit à Ittaï de Gath: «Pourquoi viendrais-tu aussi avec nous? Retourne chez toi et reste avec le nouveau roi, car tu es un étranger. Tu as même été déporté de ton pays.20Tu es arrivé hier et aujourd'hui je te ferais errer avec nous çà et là, alors que je ne sais pas moi-même où je vais! Retourne chez toi et emmène tes frères avec toi. Que l'Eternel fasse preuve de bonté et de fidélité envers toi!»21Ittaï répondit au roi: «L'Eternel est vivant et mon seigneur le roi est vivant! Là où se trouvera mon seigneur le roi, que ce soit pour mourir ou pour vivre, là aussi sera ton serviteur.»22David dit alors à Ittaï: «Vas-y, avance!» Et Ittaï de Gath avança avec tous ses hommes et tous les enfants qui étaient avec lui.23Toute la région était en larmes et l'on poussait de grands cris au passage de tout le peuple. Le roi passa le torrent du Cédron, ainsi que tout le peuple, en face du chemin qui conduit au désert.24Tsadok était aussi là, et avec lui tous les Lévites qui portaient l'arche de l'alliance de Dieu. Ils déposèrent l'arche de Dieu et Abiathar montait pendant que tout le peuple finissait de sortir de la ville.25Le roi dit à Tsadok: «Ramène l'arche de Dieu dans la ville! Si je trouve grâce aux yeux de l'Eternel, il me fera revenir ici et me fera revoir l'arche et son sanctuaire.26Mais s'il dit: ‘Je ne prends pas plaisir en toi’, je suis prêt. Qu'il me fasse ce qui lui semblera bon.»27Le roi insista encore auprès du prêtre Tsadok: «Vas-tu comprendre? Retourne en paix dans la ville avec ton fils Achimaats et avec Jonathan, fils d'Abiathar. Retournez avec vos deux fils.28Voyez, j'attendrai dans les plaines du désert jusqu'à ce que je reçoive des nouvelles de votre part.»29Ainsi, Tsadok et Abiathar rapportèrent l'arche de Dieu à Jérusalem et ils y restèrent.30David gravit le mont des Oliviers. Il montait en pleurant et la tête couverte, et il marchait nu-pieds. Tous ceux qui l'accompagnaient se couvrirent aussi la tête et ils montaient en pleurant.31On vint dire à David: «Achitophel est avec Absalom, il fait partie des conspirateurs.» David dit: «Eternel, réduis à néant les conseils d'Achitophel!»32Lorsque David fut arrivé au sommet, il adora l'Eternel. Et voici que Hushaï l'Arkien vint à sa rencontre, la tunique déchirée et la tête couverte de terre.33David lui dit: «Si tu viens avec moi, tu seras une charge pour moi.34Au contraire, tu réduiras à néant pour mon bénéfice les conseils d'Achitophel, si tu retournes en ville et que tu dises à Absalom: ‘Roi, je serai ton serviteur. J'étais auparavant le serviteur de ton père, mais je suis maintenant ton serviteur.’35Les prêtres Tsadok et Abiathar ne seront-ils pas là avec toi? Tout ce que tu apprendras au palais, tu le diras aux prêtres Tsadok et Abiathar.36Comme ils ont avec eux leurs deux fils, Achimaats, le fils de Tsadok, et Jonathan, le fils d'Abiathar, c'est par eux que vous me ferez savoir tout ce que vous aurez appris.»37Hushaï, l'ami de David, retourna donc dans la ville de Jérusalem alors qu'Absalom y entrait.
