Jesus Sends Out the Twelve Apostles

1 And he called the twelve together and gave them power and authority over all demons and to cure diseases, 2 and he sent them out to proclaim the kingdom of God and to heal. 3 And he said to them, “Take nothing for your journey, no staff, nor bag, nor bread, nor money; and do not have two tunics.* 4 And whatever house you enter, stay there, and from there depart. 5 And wherever they do not receive you, when you leave that town shake off the dust from your feet as a testimony against them.” 6 And they departed and went through the villages, preaching the gospel and healing everywhere.

Herod Is Perplexed by Jesus

7 Now Herod the tetrarch heard about all that was happening, and he was perplexed, because it was said by some that John had been raised from the dead, 8 by some that Elijah had appeared, and by others that one of the prophets of old had risen. 9 Herod said, “John I beheaded, but who is this about whom I hear such things?” And he sought to see him.

Jesus Feeds the Five Thousand

10 On their return the apostles told him all that they had done. And he took them and withdrew apart to a town called Bethsaida. 11 When the crowds learned it, they followed him, and he welcomed them and spoke to them of the kingdom of God and cured those who had need of healing. 12 Now the day began to wear away, and the twelve came and said to him, “Send the crowd away to go into the surrounding villages and countryside to find lodging and get provisions, for we are here in a desolate place.” 13 But he said to them, “You give them something to eat.” They said, “We have no more than five loaves and two fish—unless we are to go and buy food for all these people.” 14 For there were about five thousand men. And he said to his disciples, “Have them sit down in groups of about fifty each.” 15 And they did so, and had them all sit down. 16 And taking the five loaves and the two fish, he looked up to heaven and said a blessing over them. Then he broke the loaves and gave them to the disciples to set before the crowd. 17 And they all ate and were satisfied. And what was left over was picked up, twelve baskets of broken pieces.

Peter Confesses Jesus as the Christ

18 Now it happened that as he was praying alone, the disciples were with him. And he asked them, “Who do the crowds say that I am?” 19 And they answered, “John the Baptist. But others say, Elijah, and others, that one of the prophets of old has risen.” 20 Then he said to them, “But who do you say that I am?” And Peter answered, “The Christ of God.”

Jesus Foretells His Death

21 And he strictly charged and commanded them to tell this to no one, 22 saying, “The Son of Man must suffer many things and be rejected by the elders and chief priests and scribes, and be killed, and on the third day be raised.”

Take Up Your Cross and Follow Jesus

23 And he said to all, “If anyone would come after me, let him deny himself and take up his cross daily and follow me. 24 For whoever would save his life will lose it, but whoever loses his life for my sake will save it. 25 For what does it profit a man if he gains the whole world and loses or forfeits himself? 26 For whoever is ashamed of me and of my words, of him will the Son of Man be ashamed when he comes in his glory and the glory of the Father and of the holy angels. 27 But I tell you truly, there are some standing here who will not taste death until they see the kingdom of God.”

The Transfiguration

28 Now about eight days after these sayings he took with him Peter and John and James and went up on the mountain to pray. 29 And as he was praying, the appearance of his face was altered, and his clothing became dazzling white. 30 And behold, two men were talking with him, Moses and Elijah, 31 who appeared in glory and spoke of his departure,* which he was about to accomplish at Jerusalem. 32 Now Peter and those who were with him were heavy with sleep, but when they became fully awake they saw his glory and the two men who stood with him. 33 And as the men were parting from him, Peter said to Jesus, “Master, it is good that we are here. Let us make three tents, one for you and one for Moses and one for Elijah”—not knowing what he said. 34 As he was saying these things, a cloud came and overshadowed them, and they were afraid as they entered the cloud. 35 And a voice came out of the cloud, saying, “This is my Son, my Chosen One;* listen to him!” 36 And when the voice had spoken, Jesus was found alone. And they kept silent and told no one in those days anything of what they had seen.

Jesus Heals a Boy with an Unclean Spirit

37 On the next day, when they had come down from the mountain, a great crowd met him. 38 And behold, a man from the crowd cried out, “Teacher, I beg you to look at my son, for he is my only child. 39 And behold, a spirit seizes him, and he suddenly cries out. It convulses him so that he foams at the mouth, and shatters him, and will hardly leave him. 40 And I begged your disciples to cast it out, but they could not.” 41 Jesus answered, “O faithless and twisted generation, how long am I to be with you and bear with you? Bring your son here.” 42 While he was coming, the demon threw him to the ground and convulsed him. But Jesus rebuked the unclean spirit and healed the boy, and gave him back to his father.

Jesus Again Foretells His Death

43 And all were astonished at the majesty of God. But while they were all marveling at everything he was doing, Jesus* said to his disciples, 44 “Let these words sink into your ears: The Son of Man is about to be delivered into the hands of men.” 45 But they did not understand this saying, and it was concealed from them, so that they might not perceive it. And they were afraid to ask him about this saying.

Who Is the Greatest?

46 An argument arose among them as to which of them was the greatest. 47 But Jesus, knowing the reasoning of their hearts, took a child and put him by his side 48 and said to them, “Whoever receives this child in my name receives me, and whoever receives me receives him who sent me. For he who is least among you all is the one who is great.”

Anyone Not Against Us Is For Us

49 John answered, “Master, we saw someone casting out demons in your name, and we tried to stop him, because he does not follow with us.” 50 But Jesus said to him, “Do not stop him, for the one who is not against you is for you.”

A Samaritan Village Rejects Jesus

51 When the days drew near for him to be taken up, he set his face to go to Jerusalem. 52 And he sent messengers ahead of him, who went and entered a village of the Samaritans, to make preparations for him. 53 But the people did not receive him, because his face was set toward Jerusalem. 54 And when his disciples James and John saw it, they said, “Lord, do you want us to tell fire to come down from heaven and consume them?”* 55 But he turned and rebuked them.* 56 And they went on to another village.

The Cost of Following Jesus

57 As they were going along the road, someone said to him, “I will follow you wherever you go.” 58 And Jesus said to him, “Foxes have holes, and birds of the air have nests, but the Son of Man has nowhere to lay his head.” 59 To another he said, “Follow me.” But he said, “Lord, let me first go and bury my father.” 60 And Jesus* said to him, “Leave the dead to bury their own dead. But as for you, go and proclaim the kingdom of God.” 61 Yet another said, “I will follow you, Lord, but let me first say farewell to those at my home.” 62 Jesus said to him, “No one who puts his hand to the plow and looks back is fit for the kingdom of God.”

1 روزی عيسی دوازده شاگرد خود را فرا خواند و به ايشان قدرت و اقتدار داد تا ارواح پليد را از وجود ديوانگان بيرون كنند و بيماران را شفا بخشند. 2 آنگاه ايشان را فرستاد تا فرا رسيدن ملكوت خدا را به مردم اعلام نمايند و بيماران را شفا دهند. 3 پيش از آنكه به راه افتند، عيسی به آنان فرمود: «در اين سفر، هيچ چيز با خود نبريد، نه چوبدستی، نه كولهبار، نه خوراک، نه پول و نه لباس اضافی. 4 به هر شهری كه رفتيد، فقط در يک خانه میهمان باشيد. 5 اگر اهالی شهری به پيغام شما توجهی نكردند، به هنگام ترک آن شهر، حتی گرد و خاک آنجا را از پايهايتان بتكانيد تا بدانند كه خدا نسبت به آنان غضبناک است!» 6 پس شاگردان، شهر به شهر و آبادی به آبادی میگشتند و پيغام انجيل را به مردم میرساندند و بيماران را شفا میبخشيدند.

مرگ يحيی

7 وقتی كه هيروديس حكمران جليل خبر معجزات عيسی را شنيد، نگران و پريشان شد، زيرا بعضی درباره عيسی میگفتند كه او همان يحيای تعميددهنده است كه زنده شده است. 8 عدهای ديگر نيز میگفتند كه او همان الياس است كه ظهور كرده و يا يكی از پيغمبران قديمی است كه زنده شده است. اين گونه شايعات همه جا به گوش میرسيد. 9 اما هيروديس میگفت: «من خود سر يحيی را از تنش جدا كردم! پس اين ديگر كيست كه اين داستانهای عجيب و غريب را دربارهاش میشنوم؟» از این رو مشتاق بود كه عيسی را ملاقات كند.

غذا دادن به پنج هزار مرد

10 پس از مدتی، رسولان برگشتند و عيسی را از آنچه كرده بودند، آگاه ساختند. آنگاه عيسی همراه ايشان، به دور از چشم مردم، به سوی شهر بيتصيدا به راه افتاد. 11 اما عده بسياری از مقصد او باخبر شدند و به دنبالش شتافتند. عيسی نيز با خوشرويی ايشان را پذيرفت و باز درباره ملكوت خدا ايشان را تعليم داد و بيماران را شفا بخشيد. 12 نزديک غروب، دوازده شاگرد عيسی آمده، به او گفتند: «مردم را مرخص فرما تا به آبادیهای اطراف بروند و برای گذراندن شب، جا و خوراک بيابند، چون در اين بيابان، چيزی برای خوردن پيدا نمیشود.» 13 عيسی جواب داد: «شما خودتان به ايشان خوراک بدهيد!» شاگردان با تعجب گفتند: «چگونه؟ ما حتی برای خودمان، چيزی جز پنج نان و دو ماهی نداريم! شايد میخواهی كه برويم و برای تمام اين جمعيت غذا بخريم؟» 14 فقط تعداد مردها در آن جمعيت، حدود پنج هزار نفر بود. آنگاه عيسی فرمود: «به مردم بگوييد كه در دستههای پنجاه نفری، بر روی زمين بنشينند.» 15 شاگردان همه را نشاندند. 16 عيسی آن پنج نان و دو ماهی را در دست گرفت و به سوی آسمان نگاه كرد و شكر نمود. سپس نانها را تكهتكه كرد و به شاگردانش داد تا در ميان مردم تقسيم كنند. 17 همه خوردند و سير شدند و دوازده سبد نيز از تكههای باقيمانده، اضافه آمد.

اعتقاد پطرس درباره عيسی

18 يک روز كه عيسی به تنهايی دعا میكرد، شاگردانش نزد او آمدند و او از ايشان پرسيد: «به نظر مردم، من كه هستم؟» 19 جواب دادند: «يحيای تعميددهنده، يا الياس نبی، و يا يكی از پيغمبران قديم كه زنده شده است.» 20 آنگاه از ايشان پرسيد: «شما چه؟ شما مرا كه میدانيد؟» پطرس در جواب گفت: «تو مسيح موعود هستی!»

عيسی مرگ خود را پيشگويی میكند

21 اما عيسی ايشان را اكيداً منع كرد كه اين موضوع را با كسی در میان نگذارند. 22 سپس به ايشان فرمود: «لازم است كه من رنج و عذاب بسيار بكشم. بزرگان قوم، كاهنان اعظم و علمای دين مرا محكوم كرده، خواهند كشت. اما من روز سوم زنده خواهم شد!» 23 سپس به همه فرمود: «هر كه میخواهد مرا پيروی كند، بايد از خواستهها و آسايش خود چشم بپوشد و هر روز، زحمات و سختیها را همچون صليب بر دوش بكشد و به دنبال من بيايد. 24 هر كه در راه من جانش را از دست بدهد، حيات جاودان را خواهد يافت، اما هر كه بكوشد جانش را حفظ كند، حيات جاودان را از دست خواهد داد. 25 پس چه فايدهای دارد كه شخص تمام دنيا را به چنگ بياورد، اما حيات جاويد را از دست بدهد؟ 26 «هر كه در اين جهان از من و سخنان من عار داشته باشد، من نيز وقتی در جلال خود و جلال پدر، با فرشتگان مقدس به جهان بازگردم، از او عار خواهم داشت. 27 اما يقين بدانيد كه در اينجا كسانی ايستادهاند كه تا ملكوت خدا را نبينند، نخواهند مرد.»

شاگردان جلال مسيح را میبينند

28 هشت روز پس از اين سخنان، عيسی به همراه پطرس، يعقوب و يوحنا، بر فراز تپهای برآمد تا دعا كند. 29 به هنگام دعا، ناگهان چهره عيسی نورانی شد و لباس او از سفيدی، چشم را خيره میكرد. 30 در همان حال، دو مرد، يعنی موسی و الياس، با ظاهری پرشكوه و نورانی ظاهر شدند و با عيسی درباره مرگ او كه میبايست طبق خواست خدا، بزودی در اورشليم واقع گردد، به گفتگو پرداختند. 32 اما در اين هنگام، پطرس و دوستانش را خواب در ربوده بود. وقتی بيدار شدند، عيسی و آن دو مرد را غرق در نور و جلال ديدند. 33 هنگامی كه موسی و الياس آن محل را ترک میكردند پطرس كه دستپاچه بود و نمیدانست چه میگويد، به عيسی گفت: «استاد، چه عالی است! همینجا بمانيم و سه سايبان بسازيم، يكی برای تو، يكی برای موسی و يكی هم برای الياس.» 34 سخن پطرس هنوز تمام نشده بود كه ابری درخشان پديدار گشت و وقتی بر ايشان سايه انداخت، شاگردان را ترس فرا گرفت. 35 آنگاه از ابر ندايی در رسيد كه«اينست پسر محبوب من. سخنان او را بشنويد!» 36 وقتی كه ندا خاتمه يافت، متوجه شدند كه عيسی تنهاست. آنان تا مدتها، به كسی درباره اين واقعه چيزی نگفتند.

شفای يک پسر غشی

37 روز بعد، وقتی از تپه پايين میآمدند، با جمعيت بزرگی روبرو شدند. 38 ناگهان مردی از ميان جمعيت فرياد زد: «استاد، التماس میكنم بر پسرم، كه تنها فرزندم است، نظر لطف بيندازی، 39 چون يک روح پليد مرتب داخل وجود او میشود و او را به فرياد كشيدن وا میدارد. روح پليد او را متشنج میكند، به طوری كه از دهانش كف بيرون میآيد. او هميشه به پسرم حمله میكند و به سختی او را رها میسازد. 40 از شاگردانت درخواست كردم كه اين روح را از وجود پسرم بيرون كنند، اما نتوانستند.» 41 عيسی فرمود: «شما مردم اين زمانه، چقدر سرسخت و بیايمان هستيد! تا كی اين وضع را تحمل كنم؟ پسر را نزد من بياوريد!» 42 در همان هنگام كه پسر را میآوردند، روح پليد او را تكان سختی داد و بر زمين زد. پسر میغلتيد و دهانش كف میكرد. اما عيسی به روح پليد دستور داد كه بيرون بيايد. به اين ترتيب آن پسر را شفا بخشيد و به پدرش سپرد.

عيسی بار دیگر درباره مرگش پيشگويی میکند

43 مردم همه از قدرت خدا شگفتزده شده بودند. در همان حال كه همه با حيرت از كارهای عجيب عيسی تعريف میكردند، او به شاگردان خود فرمود: 44 «به آنچه میگويم، خوب توجه كنيد: مرا كه مسيح هستم بزودی به دست مردم تسليم خواهند كرد.» 45 اما شاگردان منظور او را نفهميدند، چون ذهنشان كور شده بود و میترسيدند در اين باره از او سؤال كنند.

چه كسی بزرگتر است؟

46 سپس بين شاگردان عيسی اين بحث درگرفت كه چه كسی از همه بزرگتر است! 47 عيسی كه متوجه افكار ايشان شده بود، كودكی را نزد خود خواند، 48 و به ايشان فرمود: «هر كه افرادی اينچنين كوچک را بپذيرد، مرا پذيرفته است؛ و هر كه مرا پذيرد، در حقيقت خدايی را كه مرا فرستاده پذيرفته است. بزرگی شما به اين بستگی دارد كه تا چه اندازه ديگران را میپذيريد.»

بر زبان راندن نام عيسی

49 شاگرد او، يوحنا گفت: «استاد، ما شخصی را ديديم كه با بر زبان آوردن نام تو، ارواح پليد را از وجود ديوانهها بيرون میكرد. ما نيز سعی كرديم مانع كار او شويم، چون از گروه ما نبود!» 50 عيسی فرمود: «مانع او نشويد، چون كسی كه بر ضد شما نباشد، از شماست.»

حركت عيسی به سوی اورشليم

51 هنگامی كه زمان بازگشت عيسی به آسمان نزديک شد، با عزمی راسخ به سوی اورشليم به راه افتاد. 52 او چند نفر را جلوتر فرستاد تا در يكی از دهكدههای سامرینشين، محلی برای اقامت ايشان آماده سازند. 53 اما اهالی آن دهكده، ايشان را نپذيرفتند چون میدانستند كه عازم اورشليم هستند. (سامريان و يهوديان، دشمنی ديرينهای با يكديگر داشتند.) 54 وقتی فرستادگان برگشتند و اين خبر را آوردند، يعقوب و يوحنا به عيسی گفتند: «استاد، آيا میخواهی از خدا درخواست كنيم كه از آسمان آتش بفرستد و ايشان را از بين ببرد، همانگونه كه الياس نيز كرد؟» 55 اما عيسی ايشان را سرزنش نمود. 56 بنابراين از آنجا به آبادی ديگری رفتند.

بهای پيروی از عيسی

57 در بين راه، شخصی به عيسی گفت: «میخواهم هر جا كه میروی، تو را پيروی كنم!» 58 عيسی در جواب فرمود: «روباهها، لانه دارند و پرندگان، آشيانه! اما من حتی جايی برای خوابيدن ندارم!» 59 يكبار نيز او كسی را دعوت كرد تا پيرویاش نمايد. آن شخص پذيرفت اما خواست كه اين كار را به پس از مرگ پدرش موكول كند. 60 عيسی به او گفت: «بگذار كسانی در فكر اين چيزها باشند كه حيات جاودانی ندارند. وظيفه تو اينست كه بيايی و مژده ملكوت خدا را در همه جا اعلام نمايی.» 61 شخصی نيز به عيسی گفت: «خداوندا، من حاضرم تو را پيروی كنم. اما بگذار اول بروم و از خانوادهام اجازه بگيرم!» 62 عيسی به او فرمود: «كسی كه تمام هوش و حواسش متوجه خدمت به من نباشد، لايق اين خدمت نيست!»
