1When Jeremiah finished speaking to all the people all these words of the Lord their God, with which the Lord their God had sent him to them,2Azariah the son of Hoshaiah and Johanan the son of Kareah and all the insolent men said to Jeremiah, “You are telling a lie. The Lord our God did not send you to say, ‘Do not go to Egypt to live there,’3but Baruch the son of Neriah has set you against us, to deliver us into the hand of the Chaldeans, that they may kill us or take us into exile in Babylon.”4So Johanan the son of Kareah and all the commanders of the forces and all the people did not obey the voice of the Lord, to remain in the land of Judah.5But Johanan the son of Kareah and all the commanders of the forces took all the remnant of Judah who had returned to live in the land of Judah from all the nations to which they had been driven—6the men, the women, the children, the princesses, and every person whom Nebuzaradan the captain of the guard had left with Gedaliah the son of Ahikam, son of Shaphan; also Jeremiah the prophet and Baruch the son of Neriah.7And they came into the land of Egypt, for they did not obey the voice of the Lord. And they arrived at Tahpanhes.8Then the word of the Lord came to Jeremiah in Tahpanhes:9“Take in your hands large stones and hide them in the mortar in the pavement that is at the entrance to Pharaoh’s palace in Tahpanhes, in the sight of the men of Judah,10and say to them, ‘Thus says the Lord of hosts, the God of Israel: Behold, I will send and take Nebuchadnezzar the king of Babylon, my servant, and I will set his throne above these stones that I have hidden, and he will spread his royal canopy over them.11He shall come and strike the land of Egypt, giving over to the pestilence those who are doomed to the pestilence, to captivity those who are doomed to captivity, and to the sword those who are doomed to the sword.12I shall kindle a fire in the temples of the gods of Egypt, and he shall burn them and carry them away captive. And he shall clean the land of Egypt as a shepherd cleans his cloak of vermin, and he shall go away from there in peace.13He shall break the obelisks of Heliopolis, which is in the land of Egypt, and the temples of the gods of Egypt he shall burn with fire.’”

1وقتی پيغام خداوند را به طور كامل به آنها اعلام نمودم،2عزريا (پسر هوشعيا) و يوحانان (پسر قاريح) و ساير اشخاص خودپسند گفتند: «تو دروغ میگويی! خداوند، خدای ما به تو نگفته است كه ما به مصر نرويم! باروک (پسر نيريا) بر ضد ما توطئه چيده و به تو گفته است كه اين مطالب را بگويی تا ما اينجا بمانيم و بابلیها ما را بكشند يا مثل برده به بابل ببرند.»4پس يوحانان و سرداران لشكر و ساير مردم نخواستند دستور خداوند را اطاعت كنند و در يهودا بمانند.5همهٔ ايشان، حتی تمام كسانی كه به سرزمینهای نزديک فرار كرده و بعد بازگشته بودند، با يوحانان و سرداران لشكر عازم مصر شدند.6در اين گروه، مردان، زنان، كودكان و نيز دختران پادشاه و تمام كسانی كه نبوزرادان، فرماندهٔ سپاه بابل، به دست جدليا سپرده بود، ديده میشدند؛ ايشان حتی من و باروک را به زور با خود بردند.7به اين ترتيب به مصر رسيديم و وارد شهر تحفنحيس شديم. به اين ترتيب آنها از دستور خداوند سرپيچی كردند.8آنگاه در تحفنحيس بار ديگر خداوند با من سخن گفت و فرمود:9«مردان يهودا را جمع كن و در برابر چشمان ايشان، سنگهای بزرگی بگير و در سنگفرش محوطه مشرف بر دروازهٔ قصر پادشاه مصر در تحفنحيس پنهان كن،10و به مردان يهودا بگو كه من خداوند قادر متعال، خدای اسرائيل بندهٔ خود، نبوكدنصر، پادشاه بابل را به مصر خواهم آورد، و او تخت سلطنت خود را روی همين سنگهايی كه در اينجا پنهان شدهاند، برقرار خواهد ساخت و سايبان شاهانهاش را روی آنها برخواهد افراشت.11او مملكت مصر را ويران خواهد ساخت و آنانی را كه محكوم به مرگند، خواهد كشت، آنانی را كه محكوم به تبعيدند، به اسيری خواهد برد و آنانی را كه بايد با شمشير كشته شوند، از دم شمشير خواهد گذراند.12همچنين بتخانههای مصر را به آتش خواهد كشيد، و بتها را يا خواهد سوزاند و يا با خود به غنيمت خواهد برد. همانگونه كه چوپان ككهای لباس خود را يک به يک برمیچيند، نبوكدنصر هم مصر را تمام غارت خواهد كرد و پيروزمندانه آنجا را ترک خواهد گفت.13او بتهای شهر بيتشمس را خواهد شكست و بتخانههای مصر را خواهد سوزاند.»
