1Now these are the last words of David: The oracle of David, the son of Jesse, the oracle of the man who was raised on high, the anointed of the God of Jacob, the sweet psalmist of Israel:*2“The Spirit of the Lord speaks by me; his word is on my tongue.3The God of Israel has spoken; the Rock of Israel has said to me: When one rules justly over men, ruling in the fear of God,4he dawns on them like the morning light, like the sun shining forth on a cloudless morning, like rain* that makes grass to sprout from the earth.5“For does not my house stand so with God? For he has made with me an everlasting covenant, ordered in all things and secure. For will he not cause to prosper all my help and my desire?6But worthless men* are all like thorns that are thrown away, for they cannot be taken with the hand;7but the man who touches them arms himself with iron and the shaft of a spear, and they are utterly consumed with fire.”*
David’s Mighty Men
8These are the names of the mighty men whom David had: Josheb-basshebeth a Tahchemonite; he was chief of the three.* He wielded his spear* against eight hundred whom he killed at one time.9And next to him among the three mighty men was Eleazar the son of Dodo, son of Ahohi. He was with David when they defied the Philistines who were gathered there for battle, and the men of Israel withdrew.10He rose and struck down the Philistines until his hand was weary, and his hand clung to the sword. And the Lord brought about a great victory that day, and the men returned after him only to strip the slain.11And next to him was Shammah, the son of Agee the Hararite. The Philistines gathered together at Lehi,* where there was a plot of ground full of lentils, and the men fled from the Philistines.12But he took his stand in the midst of the plot and defended it and struck down the Philistines, and the Lord worked a great victory.13And three of the thirty chief men went down and came about harvest time to David at the cave of Adullam, when a band of Philistines was encamped in the Valley of Rephaim.14David was then in the stronghold, and the garrison of the Philistines was then at Bethlehem.15And David said longingly, “Oh, that someone would give me water to drink from the well of Bethlehem that is by the gate!”16Then the three mighty men broke through the camp of the Philistines and drew water out of the well of Bethlehem that was by the gate and carried and brought it to David. But he would not drink of it. He poured it out to the Lord17and said, “Far be it from me, O Lord, that I should do this. Shall I drink the blood of the men who went at the risk of their lives?” Therefore he would not drink it. These things the three mighty men did.18Now Abishai, the brother of Joab, the son of Zeruiah, was chief of the thirty.* And he wielded his spear against three hundred men* and killed them and won a name beside the three.19He was the most renowned of the thirty* and became their commander, but he did not attain to the three.20And Benaiah the son of Jehoiada was a valiant man* of Kabzeel, a doer of great deeds. He struck down two ariels* of Moab. He also went down and struck down a lion in a pit on a day when snow had fallen.21And he struck down an Egyptian, a handsome man. The Egyptian had a spear in his hand, but Benaiah went down to him with a staff and snatched the spear out of the Egyptian’s hand and killed him with his own spear.22These things did Benaiah the son of Jehoiada, and won a name beside the three mighty men.23He was renowned among the thirty, but he did not attain to the three. 1داوود پسر يسی مردی بود كه خدا پيروزيهای درخشان نصيبش كرد. او برگزيدهٔ خدای يعقوب و شاعر شيرين سخن اسرائيل بود. اين آخرين سخنان داوود است:2روح خداوند بوسيلهٔ من سخن گفت و كلام او بر زبانم جاری شد.3خدا كه مثل صخره از اسرائيل پشتيبانی میكند، به من گفت: «فرمانروايی كه با عدل و انصاف حكومت كند و با اطاعت از خدا سلطنت نمايد،4همچون خورشيد خواهد بود كه در آسمان بیابر ظاهر میشود، و يا پس از باران بر سبزهها میدرخشد.»5و اين خاندان من است كه خدا آن را برگزيده است. بلی، خدا با من پيمانی هميشگی بسته است. پيمان او پيمانی است محكم كه هرگز تغيير نمیيابد. او نجات مرا به ثمر خواهد رساند و هر آرزوی مرا برآورده خواهد ساخت.6ولی خدانشناسان مثل خارهايی هستند كه دور ريخته میشوند، هيچكس نمیتواند به آنها دست بزند،7آنها را بايد با ابزار آهنی يا نيزه برداشت. عاقبت، همهٔ آنها میسوزند و از بين میروند.

8داوود سه سردار معروف داشت. اسم اولی يوشيب بَشَبَت اهل تحكمون كه به عدينوعصنی معروف بود. او يک بار هشتصد نفر را در يک جنگ كشت.9دومی، العازار پسر دودو، نوهٔ اخوخی بود. يک روز كه فلسطينیها برای جنگ با اسرائيلیها جمع شده بودند، سربازان اسرائيلی پا به فرار گذاشتند، اما العازار به اتفاق داوود با فلسطينیها به مبارزه پرداخت.10او آنقدر از سربازان فلسطينی را كشت كه دستش خسته شد و از دستهٔ شمشير جدا نمیشد! خداوند پيروزی بزرگی نصيب او كرد. سربازان اسرائيلی فقط برای غارت بازگشتند!11سومی، شمه پسر آجی حراری بود كه يک بار طی يكی از حملات فلسطينیها، در حالی که تمام سربازانش فرار كرده بودند، او تنها در وسط يک مزرعهٔ عدس با فلسطينیها جنگيده، آنها را كشت و مزرعه را از دست آنها آزاد ساخت. در آن روز، خداوند پيروزی بزرگی نصيب او كرد.13زمانی كه داوود در غار عَدُلام به سر میبرد، و فلسطينیهای مهاجم در درهٔ رفائيم بودند، سه نفر از سی سردار ارشد سپاه اسرائيل در وقت حصاد پيش داوود رفتند.14داوود آن موقع در پناهگاه خود بود، چون غارتگران فلسطينی شهر بيتلحم را اشغال كرده بودند.15داوود گفت: «چقدر دلم میخواهد از آب چاهی كه نزديک دروازهٔ شهر بيتلحم هست، بنوشم!»16پس، آن سه سردار شجاع قلب اردوی فلسطينی را شكافتند و از آن چاه، آب كشيدند و برای داوود آوردند. اما داوود آن را ننوشيد، بلكه آن را چون هديه به حضور خداوند ريخت،17و گفت: «نه ای خداوند، من اين آب را نمیخورم! اين آب، خون اين سه نفری است كه جان خود را به خطر انداختند.»18رهبر سی سردار ارشد داوود، ابيشای برادر يوآب (پسر صرويه) بود. او يک بار به سيصد نفر از نيروی دشمن حمله كرد و به تنهايی با نيزهٔ خود همهٔ آنها را كشت و در بين سی سردار ارشد داوود، صاحب نامی شد؛ ولی شهرت او به پای شهرت سه سردار معروف داوود نمیرسيد.20سرباز معروف ديگری نيز بود به نام بنايا پسر يهوياداع اهل قبصئيل كه كارهای متهورانه انجام میداد. بنايا، دو سردار معروف موآبی را كشت. او همچنين در يک روز برفی به حفرهای داخل شد و شيری را كشت.21يک بار با يک چوبدستی يک جنگجوی مصری قوی هيكل را از پای درآورد. آن مصری نيزهای در دست داشت و بنايا نيزه را از دست او ربود و وی را با آن نيزه كشت.22اين بود كارهای بنايا كه او را مانند سه سردار ارشد، معروف ساخت.23او از آن سی نفر معروفتر بود، ولی به پای سه سردار ارشد نمیرسيد. داوود او را به فرماندهی محافظين دربار گماشت.24همچنين عسائيل برادر يوآب يكی از آن سی سردار ارشد به شمار میآمد و سايرين عبارت بودند از: الحانان (پسر دودو) اهل بيتلحم، شمه اهل حرود، اليقا اهل حرود، حالص اهل فلط، عيرا (پسر عقيش) اهل تقوع، ابيعزر اهل عناتوت، مبونای اهل حوشات، صلمون اهل اخوخ، مهرای اهل نطوفات، حالب (پسر بعنه) اهل نطوفات، ايتای (پسر ريبای) اهل جبعهٔ بنيامين، بنايا اهل فرعاتون، هدای اهل وادیهای جاعش ابوعلبون اهل عربات، عزموت اهل بحوريم، اليحبا اهل شعلبون، پسران ياشن، يوناتان، پسر شمه اهل حرار، اخيام (پسر شارر) اهل حرار، اليفلط (پسر احسبای) اهل معكه، اليعام (پسر اخيتوفل) اهل جيلوه، حصرو اهل كرمل، فعرای اهل اربه، يجال (پسر ناتان) اهل صوبه، بانی اهل جاد، صالق اهل عمون، نحرای اهل بئيروت كه سلاحدار يوآب (پسر صرويه) بود. عيرا اهل يتر، جارب اهل يتر، اوريا اهل حيت. اين سرداران معروف، جمعاً سی و هفت نفر بودند.
